"Glossy" Effects for Logos
Guys - I use photoshop elements for my logo's, but can't find a way to add the kind of glossy effect to my logos that I see many of you using (pepeda, thuthserum, rocknfire...) Is this only a feature in the full photoshop program, or is there a trick I'm missing? Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks, Al |

Kyros - The trick is in the gradient tool. (Using a White to Transparent gradient) You can do some very basic stuff or get a little more tricky like others on this board have done. All I did was a Google search on "glossy effect photoshop" and got links for a number of tutorials. Here's some good ones...

Many of the tutorials will require you to use features only found in Photoshop, but I found a quick and easy way to achieve some decent effects with Elements.
1. Open up your "flat" logo 2. Create a new layer 3. In the new layer use the circle marquee tool to create a large oval running through the middle of the logo. 4. Use Shift-Command-I (Shift-CTRL-I on a PC) to Invert the marquee so that the top portion of the logo is now selected, but with a downward arc in the middle of the logo now. 5. Use the gradient tool (white to transparent) and drag a line down from the top of the logo to just below the bottom of the marquee. Voila! In the example below, I also added a bevel, but there are tons of other things you could do to add the 3d effect. I've noticed that the gloss effect is probably too bright on the sample below, so I can just reduce the opacity of that layer to tone it down a bit. Hope this helps! Al |

Finally decided on a much simpler "gloss" for my final set of logos, but it was cool to learn the process.
