Start historic, go fictional 2
I originally posted this in the Historic Simulations forum but I think this might be a better place for it! Sorry for the dupe.
I'd like to start a universe with a historic season (1980) but then use feeders to slowly let the league become fictional. That is, I don't want to import real players as the league evolves. To test how this might work, I created an entirely fictional universe but imported 20 real players from 1980 (neutralized stats) to see how they'd compare to the fictional players. The results were.... disappointing! Essentially, the 1980s hitters completely dominated the league. Like it wasn't even close, they led the league in average (some over .400), homers (by more than 10), etc. I then did two things: 1) Created a historic season with all 1980s players (neutralized stats) 2) Compared the fictional ratings from my fictional universe to the neutralized ratings from the 1980 historic neutralized universe The results were, again, .... disappointing!! The 1980 hitters were quite a bit higher, on average, in every category except for Power. For example, the average hitter from the neutralized 1980 universe had a 131 rating for Avoid K while the fictional universe hitters averaged 91. The pitchers were actually way worse. The 1980 pitchers averaged a 184 for Movement (!!) while the fictional pitchers averaged 69. So I guess my questions are: 1) Has anyone ever started a universe with a historic season and slowly let it become fictional? If so, did the original players dominate the league and the record books?? 2) What is up with neutralized historic seasons? I expected the average ratings to somewhat match up but it's not even close. For example, in 1980 Mike Krukow posted a 4.39 era which was about 10% worse than the league average. His neutralized overall Movement rating in the historic league is 195 which is higher than any of the fictional players created when I set up the original totally fictional league. In conclusion, based on what I'm seeing, I don't think it's possible to start a universe with a real, historic season and let it go fictional as I don't think the "Base Current Ratings on Neutralized Stats" functionality is working correctly. If it was, the average ratings for the players in the league would be about the same as any random fictional league created from scratch. Thanks for any feedback! |

Neutralized stats might be the problem. If that fails, try adjusting your player creation modifiers in the feeder league.

Neutralized stats are neutered across all major league players 1871-2014. At one point a year or so ago the most neutral baseball year was 1951.
Fictional is completely fictional and goes its own way with a fictional perspective on fictional players in a fictional setting, fictionally speaking of course.

Hmmm, ok, I'm going to create the historic league using real-life stats as opposed to neutralized numbers.
I had just assumed that a totally fictional league would use whatever baseline a neutered historic season would use. I guess not! I'll test it out and report back.... |

I created a 1980 universe based on Real Stats (as opposed to neutralized) and it still didn't really work out as a few ratings are still way off.
Examples: The average Movement rating for the 1980 pitchers was 155 versus 70 for the fictional pitchers. The average Power rating for 1980 hitters was 56 versus 71 for the fictional hitters. This entire issue just seems very odd to me; I would expect a neutralized historic season to have average ratings very close to a randomly created fictional season. Oh well, I think I'm going to fall back to Plan B which is to simply edit the fictional player names to be 1980 players based on their existing hitting and pitching ratings (which I won't mess with). So I'll just find someone with a high Power rating and make him Mike Schmidt. The entire point of this exercise is for me to start at a place where I have a feel for the players (instead of hundreds of random names) and then slowly allow the league to turn fictional over time. Thanks for the responses! |
