The Expos went 11-17 for the month and now sit at 34-41 for the season, and are tied for last, 10 1/2 games back.

I thought things were looking up for the Expos, but I'm not so sure anymore.

Tommy Boggs seems to be breaking down, first getting into an altercation with a fan, then a fight with our manager.

In the one good news of the month, Randy Tate pitched a no-hitter in a 6-0 win against the Mets.

I let my frustration with our poor season get the best of me, and I'm immediately regretting it. I already regret trading Rickey, and we're a different team now, but I'm not sure all of this makes us better, just a reaction from playing terrible.

We made a few moves at the deadline, completing a trade with the Astros in which we sent SP Tom Seaver, SP Tommy Boggs, SS Dave Concepcion, and MR Bill Caudill to Houston, and got back 21 year old left fielder George Bell, 25 year old starting pitcher Jim Clancy, and 21 year old second baseman Steve Sax.

Next up was our second blockbuster, this time with the Pirates. We shipped off SP Bob Welch, CL Joe Sambito, 2B Steve Staggs, MR Neil Allen, and 1B Dave Hostetler. Coming back to Montreal are RF Gary Roenicke, SP Marty Bystrom, and SS Wayne Tolleson.

Then finally we shipped off 2B Larry Lintz, SP Randy Tate, 2B Harry Chappas, and LF Rickey Henderson to the Giants, and got back SP Mike Krukow, 1B Keith Hernandez, and SP Steve Baker.

That was a lot of players moving teams, and it is too early to determine how it will all turn out. I hope that will make us a better team.

The first two trades seem justifiable. The Rickey trade I'm not so sure about.

Is George Bell not good enough to start at LF?

Yeah, I'm not so sure about the last trade. I think that is one that I'm going to really regret. Bell is maybe a borderline starter now, but he's young and he should be able to become our starting LF.

Thanks. I usually like to think things out a little more, have some type of plan, but this was pure impulse. Not usually how I like to do things, and I don't think I've ever turned over my entire rotation in a single day before.

The Expos had just our second winning month of the year going 16-14 for the month, although being 13 1/2 games out our season is virtually over.

Year 4 is in the books in Montreal, and it wasn't a pleasant one. After two years of winning seasons we are now back to under .500. After making so many moves before the deadline we'll see what this offseason brings, but I expect it to be quieter.

Right before the draft we completed a trade with the A's sending Steve Ontiveros, who recently executed his player option, and Lance Parrish and getting back Gary Carter and CL Don Aase.

The Expos were picking 10th in the draft and picked 1B Don Mattingly with our top pick. Starting pitcher Andy Hawkins was our supplemental draft pick. MR's Cecilio Guante, Frank DiPino, Joe Cowley, and catcher Don Crow rounded out the draft.

So there is the final verdict on the Rickey Henderson trade - 1B Hernandez is suddenly expendable with the draft of Mattingly.

Extrapolating your winning percentage at the deadline to the 162 games comes out to 74.5 wins so your moves were good for +2.5 wins, which isn't too bad for 6 weeks.

I hated to get too excited when I noticed the draft pool because I was picking 10th, but Mattingly was the guy that I really wanted, despite not having the need. I was expecting we'd draft Frank Viola with our pick, but the Mets saved the day when they selected Gary Redus with the ninth pick.

Now it's time to find the right deal for Hernandez.

With Don Mattingly aboard to play first base the Expos shipped off 1B Keith Hernandez, MR Steve Fireovid, and SP Steve Baker to the Indians, and received 2B/SS Bobby Grich and LF Mike Easler.

I feel real good about our team heading into 1982, and the one final move was signing free agent SP Larry Jaster to a 2 year $1,366,000 deal. The second year is a team option. Jaster was 9-8 with a 3.78 ERA last year.

If you look at our expected record of 28-20 it looks much better, but our actual record of 24-24 doesn't make me feel too great in year 5 in Montreal. I still like our chances though, so I'm hoping we can go on a run soon.

Don Mattingly won the NL Rookie of the Month after hitting .315 with 3 home runs, 17 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Another month, another even record. Maybe the Expos really are no better than an average team.

Pitching and defense seem to be our biggest issue right now, with parts of our rotation and bullpen struggling.

At least the Expos are closer to first place than last, although that's just barely.

The Expos had a winning month finally, going 16-11. We still remain 7 games out, and we'll be without our ace, Marty Bystrom, for a couple more weeks.

I resisted the urge to make a trade at the deadline, because sometimes I think my impulsive decisions can do more harm than good. Maybe just enjoying having Don Mattingly on my team should be good enough for now.

Gary Carter, Hubie Brooks, and Gary Roenicke were our All-Star representatives this year.

We followed up our first winning month of the season with another losing month. This time the Expos went 11-18 and effectively guaranteed season 6 as we are now 15 games back.

After a 78-84 year I want to fire myself in Montreal. For the Expos it's the 12th year of their existence, and the 12th year without a playoff birth. At least for me it's only 5 years.

It still doesn't feel very good though.

The first decision of the offseason was what to do about Larry Jaster and his option year. He's 38 years old, but he was 14-6 with a 3.35 ERA, with a 3.7 WAR. Only Marty Bystrom and his 5.5 WAR was higher. His $683,000 salary is the team's highest, but I bet against father time and executed his option.

Bobby Grich was also set to be a free agent, and even though he had a down year I really wanted him back. However, his 7 year contract demands as a 33 year old told me he didn't want to come back. Jim Clancy is also not going to be offered a contract. He only wants a 6 year deal, but he hasn't pitched too well in Montreal. Both will be offered arbitration, so at least we'll get a draft pick.

The Expos drafted 13th this year, and with our first pick we selected starting pitching Mike Moore. We drafted another starting pitcher, Neal Heaton, in the second round. Shortstop Dick Schofield was our third round pick, with reliever Jeff Dedmon and catcher Steve Christmas rounded out the draft.

Are the Phillies going to be just as good next season? 99 wins vs 78 is a lot of distance to gain.

Unless Ruben Amaro is the GM then give them a year or two and he will sign a bunch of aging stars to long term deals...

Who won the ROY did Mattingly have a chance? He looks like he put up pretty good numbers for a rookie.

Whats the draft pool looking like?
