Historical Rosters

I have a few questions about historical rosters...
Can I create a league that could have every player to play in the MLB available? I would like to create an all time team for each team.
If I start a season in 1921 and it chooses random mlb players will the players it did not choose be in the draft in future years?

To the second question: The players not drafted will go into the free agent pool.

To the first question: Set up a fictional league with 24 or 30 teams or whatever. Change the team names so that each team is one of the franchises you want to include in your league. Go through the options during the setup process. When your league is set up, you can delete all players. Be sure to delete all players from the free agent pool.

Now, you should have empty rosters for all teams. (Again, I haven't tried it, but I think this is how it works.) Go to the free agent screen. Under the Available Actions tab, choose to import historical players. Drill down to the historical database. I'll post a screenshot of what you'll see next.

The quickest way to fill your teams with players is to create a text file with the Lahman ID, year, and team abbreviation. (The abbreviation is for a team in your league.) In the screenshot below, you'll see the link to "click here to select file." Choose the text file you created. If all goes well, the players will import to the proper teams.

It might seem complicated; but once you've done it, you'll see how simple it is.

It does sound a little confusing. I will work with it and hopefully I can figure it out.

Importing

I had to do this very thing last season, but had forgotten what I did. So, for this season, I had to do it again. I figured it out:

I had to take the Master.csv and edit it down to just the LahmanIDs in one column and the year (2015) in the other.

The issue is that not all the Lahman fields are filled in for all players. So, I did a quick copy/paste to fix that as best I could. Once that was done, I saved the file as csv and used it on the above-mentioned screen (by pstrickert).

I have attached the csv that you can import as free agents.

Thanks for pstrickert for giving me the path to start the journey to solving this! Hopefully, I'll remember this for next year - haha!

PS: In case anyone is interested in the details, I opened Master.csv in Excel. I used Column B and Column AC to grab the LahmanID's. Basically, I deleted all the other columns. Now, I just had a Column A and Column B. You will notice that some rows have both filled in and some only have one filled in. So, I copied from the rows with data to the rows without data. There were missing parts on both sides, so it took a little careful eyework to grab everyone. Once I had both columns matching, I deleted Column B, leaving Column A with the mostly-complete set of LahmanIDs. Mostly? Yes, some players had NO LahmanIDs at all. They were sacrificed. Sorry. Anyway, I entered 2015 in B1, selected it and all the rows to the bottom of the list (18000+ players), and did a FILL > DOWN to copy 2015 from top to bottom. I saved the file as a CSV with a different name (attached). I then went to the Free Agent screen, import, selected my newly-created file, went to the fridge for a Coke and grabbed a snack, came back and waited for the import to finish. When it was done, I had all the players in my system, ready for free agency.

Note, ALL players came in as fragile injury. This should make for an interesting season... Yoy.

When you import player(s) directly to a team via a text file...you can also use the team id. Great if you run a fictional lg. and want to import real players. The team ID can be found on the Legue Settings-Edit League Structure page. You can import historical player(s) to any team ( Real or Fictional) in your saved game.
Format is
Player lahman id,year, team id so it looks like this:
fistedo01,2015,29
You can, with a little modding, actually create the entire historical minor leagues as well.
Shortly, I'll update my Importer 3.0 plus to facilitate the new import to team via text file function..stay tuned
