Playoff Formats

I have a question regarding the playoff formats. I noticed you can change these on July 1 like everything else.

Problem is, it just simply says either ECHL Playoffs, 16 teams 8 per conference, NHL playoffs and then it just has those 3 options repeated again. This is regarding the 16 team formats.

My question is, are any of these formats just 2 division winners and then 6 wild card teams seeded 3-8 per conference similar to the system used previously in the NHL or NBA?

Basically trying to find a playoff format that doesn’t involve the top 3 in each division making the playoffs, as is currently constituted in the NHL.

For all it’s worth, I am running just a basic NHL league in which I am the GM of an NHL team. Thanks in advance for any feedback. This is a great game and excellent community.

I think the closest one to what you want is the first 16 teams, 8 per conference setup - if you use that with a 4-division league, it'll take the top 2 teams in each division + 4 wildcards and re-seed based on the initial seeding after every round.

Do you mean 4 divisions in each conference and then 4 wild cards? Or 2 divisions and each conference with 6 wild card teams?

Thanks for the reply.

2 conferences with 2 divisions each. Top 2 in each division qualify, then the next 4 in the conference.

Thanks, makes sense.

Any thought to more customization to these playoff formats for the future?

One of many things I love about OOTP is being able to basically set it up however you wish.

Probably yes, the league customization was added relatively late in development, so there's room for stuff to be added.

I have another question about the playoff formats.

I read an article today about the NHL possibly going to a format in which the top 4 in each division make the playoffs. No wildcards. So simply seeds #1-4 in each of the 4 divisions battle it out and the team that gets through faces the team in the other division in the same conference. Then they play in the East or Western Conference championship.

Is there a format that matches that currently? And if not, is that something that could be added? Now that Seattle is becoming the 32nd team, there is at least a chance that it may be the way they do it in the near future.

Isn't that how the playoffs worked in the 21-team era?

yes it was. surprised to see them do this, if they do, as it will knock more teams out earlier if a division has 4 strong teams in a given year. Will also make the likelihood of a pretty high point team missing out.

I don’t see the option for “16 teams, 4 per division”. All I see is:
16 teams
ECHL Playoffs (16 teams)
16 teams, 8 per conf
NHL Playoffs (16 teams)
16 teams, 8 per conf
ECHL playoffs (16 teams)

It’s strange that there are duplicates and no description on them, so not sure what I’m missing here. Please let me know if one of those is supposed to be “16 teams, 4 per division”.

That is the order all the 16 team playoff options appear.

Yeah, I don't see it either. It might be in Sebastian's development version and somehow is being omitted from the test/release builds, I'll see if that's the case.

Some expalanations on the formats would be great. Right now you just pick a format and hope for the best.

I have 2 custom leagues and both only have one round of playoffs(top two teams with most points) and I have one series that has no one from one conference playing.
