Walkers news: Jan. 30 -- Realmuto will stay in St. Louis

The St. Louis River Walkers have announced they have re-signed catcher J.T. Realmuto to a one-year deal worth $1.250M.
During the 2021 season, Realmuto served as backup catcher to Walkers starter Tucker Barnhart, and was allowed to file for free agency after the season.
This year, Realmuto will be the backup for another free-agent signee Austin Hedges.
Valued primarily for his defensive skill, Realmuto batted .231 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 81 games for St. Louis in 2021.

Walkers news: Feb. 19 -- St. Louis trades with Fort Wayne for starting pitcher

The St. Louis River Walkers have completed a trade that would sent oufielder Albert Almora to the Fort Wayne Mad Men in exchange for starting pitcher Trevor Hildenberger.
A reliever much of his career, Hildenberger made the move to the rotation in 2020 when he went 9-4 with a 3.90 ERA.
The 31-year old missed much of the 2021 season, going down with a labrum issue which kept him throwing until early in 2022.
When he did pitch during 2021, the right-hander went 3-5 with a 4.10 ERA.
Almora spent the past four seasons as the primary reserve outfielder for the River Walkers.
In 2021, he got into 121 games and batted .264 with four homes and 20 RBIs.
Hildenberger is expected to be given a chance to earn a place in the starting rotation during spring training.

Walkers news: 2022 St. Louis River Walkers roster breakdown

The 2021 campaign was a frustrating one for the St. Louis River Walkers as they never seemed to find traction in a tough National League South Division saw four of six teams finish over .500.
Cedar Rapids won it with a 91-71 mark,
The Walkers were over .500 for the bulk of the campaign, but I don't think ever reached that coveted 10-game over plateau.
They ultimately finished the season 84-78 and in third place in the divison, some seven games in back of the first-place Golden Grapplers.
Overall inconsistency seemed to be the issue, as the team rarely went on a long losing streak but rarely ever won more than two in a row.
If anything stood out, it was the offense where across the board -- outside of first baseman Rhys Hoskins -- every player seemed to take a step back.
The team's batting average plummeted from .263 in 2020 to .252 and runs scored dropped from 851 to 705. Those marks ranked eighth and ninth respectively in the NL, after both being in the top two the previous season.
With that, hitting coach Brock Clarke was fired at season's end -- he actually had replaced Scott Coolbaugh at midseason, but the response was minmal -- and Kozo Shoda will handle the role in 2022.
The pitching staff was among the league's best, allowing the fewest runs in the National League (653). The starting pitcher's ERA (4.08) ranked fifth and bullpen ERA (3.47) was first.
Some key members were lost to free agency.
A stalwart for the franchise's first four seasons, right fielder Michael Conforto was the first player to sign a deal once the market was opened.. He signed so quickly, the Walkers barely had a chance to respond although an offer was made.
From the pitching staff, Yu Darvish, whose 16 wins topped the team, and Danny Duffy, whose 2.86 ERA led the NL, both left.
At 35- and 33-years-old, respectively, their demands were deemed to high based on their age.
Some new names coming in include starting pitchers Trevor Hildenberger and David Price, center fielder Bryon Buxton and catcher Austin Hedges.
The division again should be strong, with Cedar Rapids and Des Moines projected to win 97-93 games, respectively.
The predictors don't look too kindly on the Walkers, seeing them finishing in fourth with a 77-85 mark.
But that's why the games are not played on paper.
Departures
SP -- Yu Darvish, 35, R-R, 16-9, 4.44 ERA, 182.1 IP, 31 St. -- signed three-year deal worth $17.4M per season with Cincinnati
Reason for leaving: At 35-years-old, I could not justify giving him $40 million plus dollars over three seasons. He pitched well in 2021, but he also received a lot of run support. Also, when runner's got on base again him the game turned into a track meet.
SP -- Danny Duffy, 32, R-R, 14-12, 2.86 ERA, 198.1 IP, 33 St. -- signed four-year deal worth $14.6M per season (player option) with Springfield
Reason for leaving:
Again, it's money and age. He won the ERA title, but his season was light-year's better than his previous three in the MBL. I believe, I offered $13.5M for three years, team option on year three, but he did not bite.
RP -- Jake Diekman, 35, L-L, 3-3, 3 Svs., 2.54 ERA, 86 G, 56.2 IP -- 1-year deal worth $2.4M with Detroit
Reason for leaving: Diekman's been my top left-handed reliever for the past two seasons and I would have liked to have brought him back. But he's 35-years-old and I thought I had better options.
RP -- Grant Dayton, 34, L-L, 4-2, 2 Svs., 5.13 ERA, 79 G, 50.0 IP, -- Free agent
Reason for leaving:A dominant lefty out of the bullpen in 2020, Dayton absolutely stunk in 2021 to the point where he was rarely used in the last month of the season. As he was a free agent, I let him walk and looked to other options.
C -- Tucker Barnhart, 31, S-R, .205 BA, 9 HRs, 44 RBIs, 98 G, -- 1-year deal worth $2.5M with Grand Rapids
Reason for leaving: Barnhart was my starting catcher for 2018 through 2020, gave me great defense and enough offense to have faith in him to play almost every day. So before the 2021 season, I signed him to a two-year deal worth $9.5M per season (2022 season team option). He promptly went out and hit below .200 most of the season with a home run total well below his previous two seasons. So I cut him loose and went with another option.
RF -- Michael Conforto, 29, L-L, .275 BA, 37 HRs, 87 RBIs, 149 G -- Signed 7-year deal worth $17.2M per with Akron
Reason for leaving:
This one hurt, as I really wanted to bring Conforto back. He refused to really negotiate during the season and once free agency started signed so fast there was little time to respond. (Usually with a big name player you've negotiated with, you get an e-mail he's close to signing with someone else. This didn't happen. I believe I made an offer of $19M for six seasons, was leery on paying him in his age 36 season, but next thing I knew he was signed.
OF -- Albert Almora, 28, R-R, .264 BA, 4 HRs, 20 RBIs, 121 G -- Traded to Fort Wayne
Reason for leaving: A decent fourth outfielder since the founding of the Walkers in 2018, there was just no room for Almora with the moves the team made. Bryon Buxton was brought into play center field and promising rookie Tyler Esplin needs to be given an extended chance to show what he can do. Ender Inciarte will become the fourth outfielder and is just a better player.
Newcomers
SP -- Trevor Hildenberger 31, R-R, 3-5, 4.10 ERA, 52.2 IP, 12 St. – Acquired in trade with Fort Wayne

What does he bring: Acquired in a deal with Fort Wayne which sent Albert Almora to the Mad Men, Hildenberger is a former reliever who has found some success as a starter over the past two seasons. He went 9-4 with a 3.89 ERA in 2020 before a torn labrum suffered in June sidelined him for the bulk of the 2021 season.
SP – David Price, 36, L-L, 8-14, 4.80 ERA, 185.2 IP, 29 St. -Signed to a minor league contract
What does he bring: Veteran leadership and a chance to eat some innings until Brandon Spagnuolo gets some more innings under his belt in AAA. Don’t expect him to be around much past Memorial Day.
RP – Felipe Vazquez, 30, L-L, 3-4, 1 Sv., 5.61 ERA, 51.1 IP, 69 G – Signed to a minor league contract
What does he bring: A hard-throwing lefty, Vazquez could revitalize his career under pitching coach Mike Maddux, who specializes in fastball pitchers. Will likely just face left-handed hitters.
RP – Brad Hand, 32, L-L, 6-4, 1 Sv., 4.92 ERA, 89.2 IP, 68 G – Free-agent contract worth $1.5M
What does he bring: He will backup Bobby Poyner as the team’s No.2 left-handed reliever. Should be able to get out right-handed hitters on most occasions.
C – Austin Hedges, 29, R-R, .205 BA, 18 HRs, 37 RBIs, 115 G – Free-agent contract worth $2.53M
What does he bring: Ranks among the best defensive catchers in the game and is a team leader. Hopefully, he can bring the batting average up a bit and remain in that 15-20 HR range.
IF – Eduardo Escobar, 33, S-R, .248 BA, 10 HRs, 67 RBIs – Minor-league contract
What does he bring: A strong defender at multiple positions – third base, second base and shortstop – he may end up being the primary third baseman if Nicky Delmonico, a minus defender, cannot revert to his hitting form of the 2018 through 2020 seasons.
CF – Bryon Buxton, 28, R-R, .262 BA, 26 HRs, 84 RBIs, 41 St., 158 G, -- Signed to a seven-year contract worth $19.38M
What does he bring: An elite glove in center field and a base-stealing threat the team has not really had before. Hopefully, he can get on base enough to bat leadoff, along with maintain those power numbers to make up for the loss of Conforto.

Newcomers
SP3 -- Trevor Hildenberger 31, R-R, 3-5, 4.10 ERA, 52.2 IP, 12 St.

SP5 – David Price, 36, L-L, 8-14, 4.80 ERA, 185.2 IP, 29 St. -Signed to a minor league contract
What does he bring:
Veteran leadership and a chance to eat some innings until Brandon Spagnuolo gets some more innings under his belt in AAA. Don’t expect him to be around much past Memorial Day.
RP – Felipe Vazquez, 30, L-L, 3-4, 1 Sv., 5.61 ERA, 51.1 IP, 69 G – Signed to a minor league contract

C – Austin Hedges, 29, R-R, .205 BA, 18 HRs, 37 RBIs, 115 G – Free-agent contract worth $2.53M
What does he bring:
Ranks among the best defensive catchers in the game and is a team leader. Hopefully, he can bring the batting average up a bit and remain in that 15-20 HR range.

What does he bring:
An elite glove in center field and a base-stealing threat the team has not really had before. Hopefully, he can get on base enough to bat leadoff, along with maintain those power numbers to make up for the loss of Conforto.
Returning players

Starting pitchers
SP1: Aaron Nola, 28, R-R, 8-11, 3.03 ERA, 208 IP, 33 GS.
What does he bring: His won-loss may not show it, but Nola remains one of the elite pitchers in the game. Over the last four seasons, he’s gone 51-31 with a 3.27 ERA. Only concern is a work load which has averaged 195.5 innings per season in that span.
SP2: Kyle Hendricks, 32, R-R, 4-6, 4.50 ERA, 116 IP, 20 GS.
What does he bring:
The veteran righty started the season strong before starting to fizzle and eventually being shut down due to a hamstring injury on July 21. If he’ healthy, Hendricks will pitch well enough to keep the team in games.
SP3: Alex Faedo, 26, R-R, 5-2, 4.48 ERA, 70.1 IP, 13 GS.
What does he bring:
A top 10-ranked prospect, the Walkers acquired Faedo in a June 23 multi-player trade with Evanville. Faedo showed plenty of promise down the stretch to earn himself a spot in the rotation in 2022.

Relief pitchers
Cl: Tommy Kahnle, 32, R-R, 2-6, 29 Svs., 5.53 ERA, 42.1 IP, 49 G
What does he bring: Si
gned in the offseason before the 2021 season to be the closer, Kahnle struggled through much of the season piling up a league-leading nine blown saves. Part of that may go to the manager, who may have misused him. (His struggles seem to come in games where he entered in the middle of an inning or when the game was tied). He pitched well in September, but will be on a short leash to keep his closer role.
RHP: Phil Maton, 29, R-R, 4-3, 1 Sv., 1.99 ERA, 68.0 IP, 75 G
What does he bring:
Maton ranked among the top relievers in the NL in 2021 and will be counted on even more this season. If Kahnle again struggles in the closer’s role, he will likely get the first shot to fill it.
RHP: Reyes Moronta, 29, R-R, 5-3, 1 Sv., 3.08 ERA, 49.2 IP, 75 G
What does he bring:
There may not be a reliever in the league more dominant against right-handed hitters. Ask him to get a left-hander out in a big situation, and your asking for trouble Still, a nice pitcher to have in your pen.
RHP: John Curtiss, 28, R-R, 3-1, 2 Svs., 3.41 ERA, 68.2 IP, 74 G
What does he bring
: A solid right-handed reliever who also can get lefty out. However, Curtiss can go into funks where he can struggle for multiple games.
RHP: Eduardo Jimenez, 27, R-R, 2-2, 2 Svs., 1.69 ERA, 10.2 IP, 11 G (AAA Memphis)
What does he bring:
Acquired off the waiver wire from Rockford on August 8, Jimenez didn’t pitch in the majors for the Walkers in 2021 but was dominant in Memphis. A strong performance in spring training earned him a spot on the varsity going into the regular season.
LHP: Bobby Poyner, 29, L-L, 3-2, 3.12 ERA, 66.1 IP, 71 G
What does he bring:
After two seasons as an understudy, Poyner will finally get his chance to be the Walkers’ top lefty out of the bullpen. Has shown the ability to have his way with right-handed hitters. Could be a closer candidate as well.

Catcher
C – J.T. Realmuto, 31, R-R, .231 BA, 10 HRs, 29 RBIs, 81 G
What does he bring:
The backup to Tucker Barnhart a year ago, the Walkers allowed Realmuto to reach free agency only to end up re-signing him. A strong defensive catcher and handler of pitchers, he also has a little pop in his bat making him useful as a pinch-hitter.

Infielders
1B – Rhys Hoskins,29, R-R, .272 BA, 42 HRs, 126 RBIs, 155 G

What does he bring: Arguably the team MVP for 2021, Hoskins is a force at the plate and in the middle of the lineup. Combined with Andrew Benintendi and Michael Conforto as a latter-day MV3 from 2018-2021. Finding a potent bat to hit fifth behind him, as Conforto usually didm could be important. Also a team leader and captain.
2B – Bo Bichette, 24, R-R, .248 BA, 19 HRs, 76 RBIs, 149 G
What does he bring:
Bichette tore up the league when brought to the majors for good after the All-Star break in 2020. Last year was a bit of a struggle but he did play much better the final six weeks of the season. He seemed to perhaps grow up a little in the off-season – based on an e-mail sent to management – expect him to get back on course to being a perennial All-Star.
SS – Andrelton Simmons, 32, R-R, .265 BA, 3 HRs, 20 RBIs, 52 G
What does he bring:
Acquired in the trade with Evansville which brought Alex Faedo to town, Simmons provided St. Louis with an elite defender at shortstop and at least an equal player at the plate to the man he replaced Adeiny Hechavarria.

3B: Nicky Delmonico, 29, L-R, .233., 19 HRs, 67 RBIs, 144 G
What does he bring:
After three really good seasons at the plate between 2018 and 2020, Delmonico took a big step back in 2021 posting career lows in every offensive category. He also saw a dip in his defensive rating at third, which was only average to being with. He’ll have to improve the offense if he hopes to remain a starter at third and not the primary backup at the corner infield positions.
IF – Carlos Arroyo, 26, R-R, .244 BA, 4 HRs, 23 RBIs, 96 G
What does he bring:
Arroyo offers above average defense at second base, shortstop and third base and a competent bat at the plate. There are some who feel he should be the Walkers’ starting third baseman.

Outfielders
LF – Andrew Benintendi, 27, L-L, .285 BA, 28 HRs, 98 RBIs, 158 G
What does he bring.
While Michael Conforto and Rhys Hoskins have been very good, there is little doubt over the past four seasons Benintendi has been the Walkers’ best player. He may have taken a small step back in 2021, but overall he’s maintained a .317 batting average with 33 homers and 108 RBIs since the start of the MBL. He’s only 27 years old.
OF – Ender Inciarte, 31, L-L, .281 BA, 9 HRs, 45 RBIs, 139 G
What does he bring:
When Michael Conforto bailed, it left the Walkers in a bind. The next best outfielder on the market was Bryon Buxton who also played center field. So when Buxton signed, it forced Inciarte into the backup outfielder role. He should be a very good one, with very good defense and the ability to get on base. It’s how he reacts to being a well-paid backup that is the key.
RF – Tyler Esplin, 22, L-R, .240 BA, 0 HRs, 1 RBI, 16 G
What does he bring
: Looking at his metrics, Esplin will remind you of Michael Conforto. Hopefully, that’s what he turns out to be. (He might be even better defensively). All of his at-bats in 2021 were in September and many were of the pinch-hit variety. He had a strong spring training and will be given every chance to prove what he can do in the majors during the first few months of 2022. His numbers at AAA Memphis in 2021, .261 BA, with 22 homers and 76 RBIs in 95 games.
Others to watch
SP – Brendan Spagnuolo, 26, R-R, 0-2, 9.82 ERA, 14.2 IP, 3 St.
What does he bring:
Has rocketed through the minor-league system and served as a starting pitcher in the team’s six-man rotation during spring training and was impressive. May just need to get a few more innings under his belt before moving up.
RP – Omar Garcia, 27, R-R, 3-1, 2.74 ERA, 62.1 IP, 68 G
What does he bring:
The odd-man out in a number’s crunch of good right-handed relievers in spring training. Was very good in his first professional season since getting out of Cuba. Don’t look for him to be in Memphis for long.
RP – Bill Warson, 25, R-R, 1-0, 4.35 ERA, 10.1 IP, 12 G
What does he bring:
Another strong right-handed reliever who can easily fill a role if one of the men in the majors should falter or get injured.
IF – Joe Mundy, 26, R-R, .263 BA, 5 HR, 13 RBIs, 89 G
What does he bring:
Spent all of 2021 in the majors as the primary backup at first and third base. Batted well over .300 until mid-July until his numbers started to crumble. Still a nice bat off the bench and good defender.
IF – Matt Duffy, 31, R-R, .240, 7 HRs, 46 RBIs, 153 G,
What does he bring:
Signed to a minor league contract after playing last season for Toledo, Duffy provides insurance at third base if Delmonico should again struggle at the plate. A very good defender, he also is considered a team leader and could help in that aspect both in the majors and in Memphis.

Walkers news: April 4 -- Springfield 6, St. Louis 3

Record: 1-0, 4th (tied), 1 GB Des Moines, Springfield, Cedar Rapids
A four-run top of the eighth inning against the St. Louis bullpen allowed Springfield to come away with a 6-3 one-day delayed season-opening win at Busch Stadium (1997).
Right-hander John Curtiss was on the mound when the floodgates opened.
Nate Traylor led off with a homer.
The next four batters also reached base before Curtiss was relieved. Ryan Mountcastle had an RBI double in the sequence.
Brad Hand then took the mound and recorded two outs before Jorge Alfaro got to him for a two-run single.
James Paxton worked seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to earn the win.
Alex Caudio and Gerson Moreno worked a scoreless inning apiece to close it out.
River Walkers starting pitcher Aaron Nola worked six innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
NOTE: I did not manage this game. Opening day was originally postponed. When I advanced the game a day, I saw opening day labelled again and simmed. Which simulated the contest. Hopefully, I don't miss the playoffs by one game.

Walkers news: April 5 -- St.Louis 4, Springfield 1

Walkers news: Inciarte placed on IL; Americaan called up

The St. Louis River Walkers have placed outfielder Ender Inciarte on the injured list after he suffered a fractured hand while making a defensive play in an April 10 game against Des Moines at Busch Stadium (1997).
Although Inciarte is no longer a regular, Bryon Buxton is the center fielder and rookie Tyler Esplin is in right, he had gotten off to a good start in 2022 batting .750 with two RBIs.
He is expected to miss up to six weeks.
The River Walkers have called 25-year-old center fielder Edmond Americaan up from AAA Memphis.
The left-handed swinging Americaan hit .254, with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 98 games for the Redbirds in 2021.
