Friday, May 9, Year III

We are in Houston to play 4 games over the weekend in the Astrodome with a doubleheader on Sunday. They just split a pair here with Oakland. They won their last game after losing 7 in a row. We won the season series, 7-5, last year and lost, 5-7, in Year I. They are 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.70 runs per game (Portland is up to #6 with 4.39). They are tied for last in HR with 13 (thanks to the Astrodome), but lead the League in 2B (59). The Astros are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.63 per game (Portland is down to #2 with 3.29). The Padres have passed us (3.22). The Angels and Oaks are right on our heels and will pass us soon if we keep pitching like we have been in May.

Portland Beavers (19-12 .613 0 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (11-19 .367 8 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 2-1 2.25) 2 time All-Star vs. HOU: Johnny Maskell (25-R 0-4 4.05)

Panighetti, once a strikeout pitcher, struck out a season high 4 in his last start (7 IP), but also gave up a season high 4 runs...

These two pitchers were traded for each other.

Maskell, the ex-Beaver, has had 4 excellent starts with 5 total earned runs allowed, but 2 bad outings where he gave up 11 runs in a total of 6 IP. Last year, he was 11-11 with 3.38 ERA for Houston. We faced him once last year and scored 7 runs (4 earned) in 5.2 IP, but he escaped without a loss.

Top of the First:

Omar Flores grounds out to 2nd. Jeff Schottler draws a walk. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Steve Coker throws the ball into center field! Jeff Austin lines a hit to center and Schottler scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Austin gets caught stealing... 2 outs. Tony Casarez grounds out to the pitcher.

Bottom of the First:
Don Mosley grounds a hit to left. Bob Trigg flies out to center. Dave Longman swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to the pitcher and Mosley goes to 2nd. Rick Dill grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Sixth:

PH Gary Warner (28--R) grounds a hit to left. Don Mosley lays down a bunt and beats it out for a hit. The Bullpen is up. Bob Trigg grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! Dave Longman pokes a hit to left and Warner scores to tie the game at 1 all.... P Don Panighetti balks Longman to 2nd... We walk Rick Dill intentionally. Steve Coker lines out to short!

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Danny True (24-R), a rookie who has not allowed a run yet in his Big League career in 3.1 IP. Phil Parker grounds a hit to center. P Don Panighetti bunts him to 2nd. Omar Flores grounds a hit to center and Parker beats the throw home! 2 to 1, Beavers! Flores steals 2nd and then steals 3rd on the next pitch! That brings their infield in and Jeff Schottler grounds one through the left side for a hit and Flores scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! Jeff Austin and Tony Casarez then both strike out looking....

Won - 3 to 1

We had 10 hits and made no errors
Houston had 5 hits and made 2 errors

Don Panighetti (W 3-1) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. He balked. 110 pitches. At bat, he had a hit.

Johnny Maskell went 6 innings, gave us 1 run, 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Danny Trues (L 0-1) went 2 innings, gave us 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits and a walk, stole 3 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Now that is the way your top 2 hitters should hit! SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits. 2B Paul Bouvet, in his final game as a Beaver, went 0 for 4. He is hitting .210... We traded for him because hit hit .332 in 758 AB for Philadelphia. Since joining the Beavers, he has hit .285 overall and his OPS this season is .555.... My mother told me never to trade for players with French names, but I did not listen.... I will from now on...

2B Paul Bouvet (27-R) is a Beaver no more. I just could not stand to look at his face another day. He is now a Tiger, because the young pitcher I wanted (and could get) with him as the primary piece was with Detroit. Unfortunately, they did not have an adequate middle infielder to give us to replace Bouvet, so the dominoes started to fall and a few other beloved Beavers are no more....

Trade #19:
C Dave Benya (28-S), 2B Paul Bouvet (27-R) and minor league RP Tim Mazza (25-R) to Detroit for SP Dave Sutton (25-L), 3B Damien Carr (29-L) and minor league RP Gaylen Hardy.

Benya is not hitting and is making a cool million per season. We were going to have to non-tender him after this season anyway or else pay him even more next year. The plan is to try to sign him back on the cheap this off-season when the Tigers non-tender him. Mazza is not much of a talent, but the Tigers asked for him.

Sutton was 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA for the Tigers in 4 starts, but was the #81 prospect this Spring and had decent numbers in AAA last year. Carr is a slugger; he is currently leading the NL in HR with 9 and is hitting .300 with a 1.067 OPS. He'll be a free agent after this season is why the Tigers were willing to deal him, I guess. He hit .305 with 35 HR and 116 RBI last year and also hit 30 HR in Year I. Only knock on him is that he cannot hit lefties all that well and he is from England, the same as Bouvet.... If he bombs for the Beavers, we will never sign another player from England. Bouvet and Carr are the only players in the Major Leagues from England, so it is a bit of an oddity that they are traded for one another. Carr will play 1st for the Beavers. Hardy is not much of a talent, but I liked his name and they were willing to toss him in.

So, I decided that Eddie Thomas was not worth counting on at shortstop to hit .200, so I needed a new middle infielder. And since Jeff Austin is out of a starting job, he was the bait we had to dangle. I found a young second baseman in Chicago that I immediately began to covet, but Austin was not enough to get him, so we had to part with another Beaver or two....

Trade #20:
RP Jorge Reyna (33-R), 1B Jeff Austin and RF Bob Draper (23-L) to Chicago for SP Tom Wagner (35-L), 2B Pablo Mateo (25-R) and three minor leaguers: SP Jerry Mann (26-R), SP Steve Gruber (23-R) and C Jose Arebalo (23-R).

Reyna and Austin are both over 30 and neither is particularly good, so they will not be missed much. I liked them both, but Austin really was not a good hitter with his lack of OBP, even though he has led our team in HR and RBI. Draper is the one that is most inconvenient to trade, since Woody Griesbach is currently suffering from concussion symptoms. Until he comes back, we are going to be a little short handed in the outfield.

Wagner is a knuckleballer who won 20 games in Year I. He is 1-2 with a 3.44 ERA in 5 starts this season. We had to take him to get Austin and Reyna onto their payroll. He is making just under $2 million through next season. But being 35 is just a Spring chicken for a knuckleballer. Mateo was on both the NL's Silver Slugger team and their Gold Glove team last year. He hit .284 with 21 HR and 92 RBI and led the NL in doubles with 41. He is not a runner. Of course, we do not expect him to hit quite as well in Portland as he did in Wrigley Field, but I bet he can hit better than Paul Bouvet was this season.... Wait a minute, I need to find some wood to knock on... Mann is another of those fringe starters that could do a decent job for us in a pinch, but we don't want in our rotation. The other two are probably never going to be heard from again, so we won't waste space here...

I also made an offer to RF Tim Segal (37-R), a free agent who played in St. Louis in Year I and II. He hit .258 with a .372 OPS and 11 HR in 427 AB in those seasons. Lately, especially when we face a left-handed starting pitcher, I have found myself wishing I had a right-handed hitter on the bench to send up to bat besides Eddie Thomas. So, he will hopefully solve that problem.

P Michael Navarrete (28-L) was sent back to Vancouver (AAA) to make room for the new pitchers and SS George Lamb (26-R) and 3B Pete Frey (24-L) were called up from Vancouver (AAA). One of them will go back down when Segal signs.

Portland Beavers (20-12 .625 0 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (11-20 .355 9 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East)

POR: Tom Wagner (35-L Beaver debut 1-2 3.44 for Chicago) All-Star (Yr I) vs. HOU: Dave Cole (27-R 3-2 3.40)

I do not think I have ever heard of another left-handed knuckler...

Editor's Note: Wilbur Wood was a lefty, but he is the only one who won at least 100 games.

Cole, another ex-Beaver, started off like gangbusters this season, going 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his first 4 starts, including a shutout. But he has lost his last two, allowing 10 runs in 9.2 IP. We faced him once last year and scored 2 runs in 1.2 IP before he had to leave with an injury.

Attendance: 14,582

Top of the First:

Omar Flores takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and steals 2nd. Jeff Schottler flies out to shallow left and Flores is doubled off at 2nd by LF Mike Cunningham... Pablo Mateo, in his first AB as a Beaver, doubles over the head of the center fielder! Damien Carr, in his first AB as a Beaver, grounds a hit to center and Mateo scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Carr steals 2nd! He is NOT a base stealer! He stole 1 for Detroit before the trade and 3 all of last year, though he did have 14 in Year I. Tony Casarez pops out to center.

Bottom of the First:

Don Mosley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Bob Webster swings at the first pitch and pops out to center. Dave Longman grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Rick Dill grounds out to short!

Top of the Second:

With 1 out, Phil Parker walks on 4 pitches. Dave Lesley grounds one to 2nd and Bob Webster makes a diving stop and throws him out. Awesome play. Parker goes to 2nd. I talked to Houston about Webster, but the thought of having to face Bouvet and have him hit .400 against us gave me pause... P Tom Wagner, in his first AB as a Beaver, lines one to center, but Don Mosley has it hit off the heel of his glove for a 2 base error and Parker scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Omar Flores grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Third:
With 2 outs, Bob Webster hits a home run down the right field line... 2 to 1, Beavers. That is his first home run of the season.

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Gordon Saunderson lines a hit to center. Phil Parker erases him on a force at 2nd, 4-6. Dave Lesley lines a hit to center and Parker beats the throw to 3rd. P Tom Wagner, a .180 career hitter, grounds a hit to right and Parker scores and Lesley takes 3rd without a throw! 3 to 1, Beavers! Omar Flores grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourth:
Rick Dill and Mike Cunningham lead off with back-to-back singles. Gary Warner grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Dill goes to 3rd. And Wagner makes his first acquaintance with Pepe... Unfriggin' believable... We are snake bit this year... New Pitcher: John Alecci (27-R). Steve Coker lines a hit to right and Dill scores... 3 to 2, Beavers. Russ Mitchell grounds into a force at 3rd, 5u. 2 outs.

Editor's Note: I fell out of my chair when this happened! I have NEVER seen a force out at 3rd, except on failed sacrifice bunt attempts, in my 20 years of playing OOTP! Omar Flores will go down in history as the first 3rd baseman to ever think of stepping on the bag!

P Dave Cole grounds out to the pitcher.

Top of the Fifth:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a double down the left field line, but the next three make outs...

Bottom of of the Fifth:
Don Mosley leads off with a double to right center. We get the Bullpen up. I bet the next three will NOT make outs for them... Bob Webster grounds out to 2nd and Mosley goes to 3rd. Dave Longman pops out to 2nd. Rick Dill gets beaned and has to leave the game. Pinch-Runner: Rob Mullins (30-L), who is slower than my pet terrapin... Mike Cunningham grounds a hit to right and Mosley scores to tie the game at 3 all. Gary Warner loops a hit to center and Mullins scores... 4 to 3, Astros. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (31-L). Steve Coker grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Russ Mitchell leads off with a double to right... Bullpen is back up. PH Neil Rivers (26-S) grounds out to 2nd and Mitchell goes to 3rd. We walk Don Mosley intentionally. Bob Webster grounds a 3-2 pitch to short and Dave Lesley boots it... Mitchell scores. 5 to 3, Astros. Dave Longman lines one to deep right and Gordon Saunderson just gets to it and makes a great catch! 2 outs. 3B Bob Trigg, who came in for the injured Rick Dill, grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Andy Van Kuiken (29-R), with a 5.11 ERA in 12.1 IP. PH Pete Frey (24-L) is sent up to make his Major League debut. He was batting .365 for Vancouver (AAA). He grounds out to short. Omar Flores beats out an infield hit. With 2 outs, Pablo Mateo hits a home run to right center to tie the game at 5 all!! Welcome to the Beavers! Damien Carr doubles to left center. They walk Tony Casarez intentionally. No chance for a double steal... Gordon Saunderson grounds a hit to right and Carr heads home...safe! 6 to 5, Beavers! Phil Parker grounds out to short.

Top of the Eighth:

With 1 out, PH Dennis Webb (26-L) lines a hit to right. Omar Flores beats out an infield hit. Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to left and Webb scores! 7 to 5, Beavers! That does it for P Andy Van Kuiken. New Pitcher: Ron Gilmore (28-R) with a 2.12 ERA in 17 IP with 20 SO. Pablo Mateo grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Flores goes to 3rd. Damien Carr grounds out to the pitcher...

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Don Schmidt (28-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work. Rollie Ferree is in to play right and Eddie Thomas came in to play short last inning. With 1 out, Bob Trigg and Mike Cunningham hit back-to-back singles... PH Bill Henning (31-L), batting .289 in 90 AB with 1 HR, grounds into a 1-6-3 double play and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 7 to 5

We had 13 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 12 hits and made 1 error

Tom Wagner, in his Beaver debut, went 3.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
RHP John Alecci went 1.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits and 1 HB. We may have to trade for a right-handed reliever... We don't have anyone at Vancouver (AAA) who is doing particularly well, except for left-handers, of which we have too many already...
LHP Lou Hertzberg (W 2-2) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 unearned run, 1 hit and 1 walk (INT).
LHP Mitch Dowdell (H 1) went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 4) pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed 2 hits. His Saves finally match his Blown Saves... And his ERA is now under 6 (5.93)!!

Dave Cole went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Andy Van Kuiken (L 0-3 BS 3) went 1.1 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run and 1 walk (INT).

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits and a walk, stole a base and scored a run. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. 2B Pablo Mateo, in his Beaver debut, hit a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. Paul Bouvet had 4 extra base hits in 28 games.... 1B Damien Carr, in his Beaver debut, had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Gordon Saunderson had 2 hits and an RBI. C Phil Parker did not have a hit, but drew a walk and scored 2 runs. PH Dennis Webb had a hit and scored a run.

For the Astros, LF Mike Cunningham had 3 hits and an RBI.

The Astros announced that Rick Dill had a sore back that would bother him for about a week, but he should be able to play.

Okay, Pepe, let's here it... "Tom Wagner has a sore hammy, but it is not bad and he should make his next start." Okay!

Down on the Farm:
New acquisition, Jerry Mann (26-R), pitched a 3 hit shutout for Vancouver (AAA) in his debut for the Mounties. He walked 3 and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. The Mounties won, 2 to 0.

Ballpark: The Astrodome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 15,519

Top of the First:
Omar Flores leads off with a triple to left center! Jeff Schottler swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to left!! 2 to 0, Beavers! That is his first home run of the season! He hit 13 as a rookie in Year I plus 3 in one game in the World Series that year, but drooped to only 7 last year. Pablo Mateo grounds out to the pitcher... Damien Carr swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd. Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to right. Gordon Saunderson doubles off the center field wall and Casarez stops at 3rd. Phil Parker swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to right and both runners score!! 4 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley strikes out.

Bottom of the First:
Bob Webster swings at a 3-2 pitch and comes up with nothing but air! Bob Trigg takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Bill Henning flies out to right. Rick Dill, who still has a bruise on his back from a beaning yesterday, gets beaned again... Dave Longman flies out to left!

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Bob Trigg grounds one to 1st that will give P Angel Gaspar six hitless innings, but Damien Carr boots the ball... Bill Henning follows with their first hit, a triple to left center that scores Trigg... 4 to 1, Beavers. Rick Dill beats out an infield hit and Henning scores... 4 to 2, Beavers. Dick Longman lines out to center.

Won - 4 to 2

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 4 hits and made 2 errors

Angel Gaspar (W 3-0) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 2 unearned runs, 4 hits, 1 HB, 1 walk and struck out 4. 111 pitches. At bat, he had a hit. I think he might be our best pitcher right now.

Brad Hamel (L 0-2) went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with his first home run of the season and 2 RBI. LF Tony Casarez had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. RF Gordon Saunderson hit a double and scored a run. C Phil Parker had a hit and 2 RBI.

Game Two:
POR: Dave Sutton (25-L Beaver debut 2-1 4.35 for Detroit) Rookie vs HOU: Pat Porter (26-R 1-2 4.43)

Sutton is a hard thrower (92 MPH) and has a very good slider and a decent curveball and a changeup just for show. He's a hard worker and a great kid.

Porter is their #1 starter. We faced him 4 times last year and he had 3 excellent starts, but only went 1-1. He's going on short rest.

RF Tim Segal (37-R) singed a contract yesterday for $218,000 for the rest of this season. SS George Lamb (26-R) was sent back to Vancouver (AAA).

We also made another deal.

Trade #21:
Minor League 1B Larry Priest (25-R) to Boston for RP Brian Dunbar (31-R).

Priest is 25 and hitting .228 in A Ball with no HR...

Dunbar has spent the last two years in AAA as a starter, but has pitched 17 good innings in relief for Boston so far this year. We need a right-hander in the Bullpen and I do not want to trade a good player to get one, so we will give Dunbar a shot. If he does not work out, we have lost nothing.

John Alecci (27-R) has been sent to Vancouver (AAA) to make room.

Portland Beavers (23-12 .657 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (20-11 .645 in first place in the PCL East)

POR: Brian Hagans (27-R 2-1 5.13) vs. DEN: Larry Thompson (26-R 2-3 3.89)

Hagans has allowed at least 4 runs in his last three starts. Pitching in Mile High Stadium will not help him end that streak...

Thompson has allowed 10 runs in his last two starts (9 IP). He was acquired in a trade with St. Louis. We have never faced him.

Portland Beavers (24-12 .667 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (20-12 .625 in first place in the PCL East)

POR: Larry Smith (28-R 2-0 1.80) vs. DEN: Jimmy Melnik (30-L 4-2 4.46)

We are skipping Don Panighetti because I don't want a lefty pitching in Mile High if I can help it. Smith gave up 1 run in 8.1 IP at Kansas City in his last start, 6 days ago.

Melnik went 7-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 13 starts last year. This will be his 9th start of Year III and the 8th in Denver. He only allowed 1 run in his lone start on the road. Poor Fellow. We have never faced him.

Friday, May 16, Year III

We had good news and bad news from Pepe and his medico friends. But the bad news is worse than the good news.... Good News: P Tom Horn (26-L) is ready to give it another try, so he was activated from the DL and P Larry Smith was sent to Vancouver (AAA). Bad News: RF Woody Griesbach (25-R) is not responding well to treatment for his concussion and his return is not imminent and they have not set a new time table for it...

We are back home in Portland to play the Dallas Eagles a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 2 of 3 at home to the Seals. LF Steve DeMuro, the noted Beaver Killer, is currently injured and will not play this series. Last year, we won the season series, 9-3, and won it, 8-4, in Year I and also beat them in the PCL Championship that year. They are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.50 runs per game (Portland is up to #4 with 4.62). Scoring is up in the PCL this year: 3.83 ERA compared to 3.60 last year. They still score more in the NL, though, where the ERA is 3.89. The Eagles are dead last (12th) in fewest runs allowed with 5.19 per game (Portland is back to #1 with 3.22).

Dallas Eagles (17-19 .472 4.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (25-12 .676 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Ralph Hoskins (27-R 3-1 3.38) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (24-R 3-0 1.92)

Hoskins has thrown 2 shutouts this season. He was 0-1 in 3 starts against us last year, but did not have a bad game.

Gaspar, who has officially become our #1 starter with the demise of Frank Martin and the lack of strikeouts by Spaghetti Panighetti, pitched a 4 hit shutout in his last outing.

Top of the First:
I was happy to see Tony Sierra and his .422 average was not in the lineup today and leading off, but Bob Holder hits a home run to left... 1 to 0, Eagles. Chris Hagerty swings at the first pitch and lines out hard to center. Edwin Juan grounds out to short. Qian Duan swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to left. Frank Bott pops a little hit to left and Duan heads home, but LF Tony Casarez throws him out!

Bottom of the First:

Omar Flores grounds out to 2nd. Jeff Schottler grounds out to short. Pablo Mateo grounds out to 1st, 3-1...

Top of the Third:
P Bill Avallone leads off with a double to right center. The next three make outs, though!

The first time through our order is 9 up and 9 down...

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 2 outs, we finally get a base runner when Pablo Mateo doubles down the right field line. Damien Carr lines an 0-2 pitch to right for a hit, but Mateo stops at 3rd... With 2 outs, you take the risk!! Tony Casarez bloops a hit to left and Mateo scores to tie the game at 1 all! Gordon Saunderson takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three...

Top of the Fifth:
Jim Bakutis, the ex-Beaver, leads off with a double over CF Jeff Schottler's head... Pete Benson grounds a hit to center and Bakutis stops at 3rd. We get the Bullpen up... P Bill Avallone bunts Benson to 2nd and Bakutis stays put at 3rd.

Editor's Note: The OOTP A.I. does not know how to handle a pitcher that can hit...

Bob Holder flies out to center and Bakutis tags up. Schottler's throw is past the catcher and Bakutis scores and Benson goes to 3rd on the error... 2 to 1, Eagles. 2 outs. Chris Hagerty lines a hit to left and Benson scores... 3 to 1, Eagles. Edwin Juan grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Frank Bott pops one out to shallow right that drops for a hit while everyone stands around looking at each other... Gill Blair grounds a hit to left and Bott takes 3rd. The Bullpen is up... Jim Bakutis grounds one to short, but Dave Lesley drops the ball when he tries to take it out of his glove and Bott scores... 4 to 1, Eagles. Pete Benson grounds into a 5-4-3 double play.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Omar Flores grounds a hit to left and steals 2nd. Jeff Schottler doubles to left center and Flores scores! 4 to 2, Eagles. Pablo Mateo doubles off the wall in straight away center and Schottler scores! 4 to 3, Eagles. Damien Carr grounds a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a hit and Mateo beats the throw to the plate to tie the game at 4! Tony Casarez grounds into a 4-6-3 double play to kill the inning...

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Phil Young (34-L), a free agent signed from Cincinnati after they released him, despite having a pretty good season. He was 4-1 with 2 SV and a 3.39 ERA in 101 IP. But they must have known something, because he has been horrible for Dallas: 2-1 with an 8.79 ERA in 14.1 IP with 31 H allowed! 8 2B! PH Tim Segal (37-R) swings at the first pitch and flies out to center, just short of the wall... Dave Lesley grounds a hit past the shortstop to left center. PH Larry Sinchak (32-R) lines out hard to deep left... PH Rollie Ferree (29-R) doubles to right center and Lesley scores from 1st! 5 to 4, Beavers! Jeff Schottler grounds out to short...

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (28-R). Larry Sinchak stays in to play 3rd and Dennis Webb is in to catch. With 1 out, Qian Duan hits a home run to left and Schmidt has blown yet another save.... 5 to 5, all tied up.

Top of the Ninth:

They go down in order with 2 strikeouts! Why could not Schmidt have done that last inning?

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Steve Patterson (31-L). He had ERA's of 3.11 and 3.41 the last two years, but is off to a rough start this season with a 7.02 ERA. With 1 out, Larry Sinchak draws a full count walk. PH Eddie Thomas (27-R) doubles to left and Sinchak is around 3rd and heading home.....safe!!! And this Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 6 to 5

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors

LHP Steve Patterson (L 1-2) faced 3 batters and got 1 out, allowed 1 run, 1 hit and 1 walk.

PH Rollie Ferree hit a double and had an RBI. PH Eddie Thomas won the game with his double and RBI. First time that he has had a walk-off hit since Year I, when he had 3 of them in the month of August. CF Jeff Schottler hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Pablo Mateo hit 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Damien Carr had 2 hits and a walk and an RBI. LF Tony Casarez had 2 hits and an RBI. PH Larry Sinchak drew a walk and scored the winning run.

Dallas Eagles (18-20 .474 5.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (26-13 .667 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Dave Shoemake (27-R 2-3 6.43) vs. POR: Tom Wagner (35-L 0-0 5.40) All-Star (Yr I)

Shoemake is another ex-Beaver. The Eagles have a bushel of them. He only allowed 1 run in 8 IP in the Kingdome his last time out and got the win. We have never faced him.

Wagner, the knuckler, had to leave the game with a sore hamstring in the 4th inning of his Beaver debut. Hopefully, he can last longer this time.

Top of the First:
Tony Sierra and his .419 BA swing at a 2-2 pitch and triple to right center.... Chris Hagerty lines out to left and Sierra tags up and beats the throw home. 1 to 0, Eagles. Edwin Juan flies out to shallow left. Billy Shiyou swings at a 2-2 pitch and doubles down the right field line. Qian Duan lines out to center.

Bottom of the First:

Omar Flores grounds out to 3rd. Jeff Schottler strikes out looking... Shoemake struck out 1.9 per 9 IP for the Beavers.... Pablo Mateo grounds a hit to center. Damien Carr doubles over the center fielder's head and Mateo scores from 1st without a throw to tie the game at 1 all! Carr has an OPS of 1.036 now as a Beaver, despite the fact that he has not hit a home run yet. Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Tony Sierra and his .424 BA double to left center... With 1 out, Edwin Juan grounds a hit to center and Sierra beats the throw home. 2 to 1, Eagles. Juan steals 2nd and then Billy Shiyou lines a hit to left and Juan scores. 3 to 1, Eagles. Qian Duan reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 3B Omar Flores... Hank Anderson grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Fourth:

Omar Flores singles and steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Damien Carr grounds a hit to center and Flores beats the throw home to tie the game at 3 apiece! Then Carr gets thrown out trying to steal...

Bottom of the Sixth:
Tony Casarez singles and steals 2nd. They walk Gordon Saunderson intentionally. And then I make another dumb move and send Dennis Webb (26-L) up to bat for C Phil Parker, forgetting that we would probably bunt here anyway, and Webb bunts the runners up. They walk Dave Lesley intentionally for the second time today to load the bases up with 1 out. Last time they did, we let P Tom Wagner bat, but not this time. PH Pete Frey (24-L), still looking for his first Major League hit is sent up. He is 0 for 2 with a SF since being called up. He flies out to shallow right and the runners hold... 2 outs. Omar Flores drills one over the center fielder's head for a base clearing double!!! 3 runs score and Flores ends up on 3rd! 6 to 3, Beavers. P Dave Shoemake heads to the showers. New Pitcher: Gary Alfieri (35-R). He has a 2.18 ERA in 20.2 IP, but has only allowed 8 hits in 20.2 IP. Jeff Schottler lines out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Seventh:

Pablo Mateo leads off with a double to right center. That gives him 7 extra base hits in 8 games as a Beaver! They walk Damien Carr intentionally, the fourth intentional free pass of the day for us. Tony Casarez grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and Mateo goes to 3rd. Gordon Saunderson draws a walk to load the bases up. Dennis Webb strikes out... 2 down. Denver Bears (23-14 .622 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (27-14 .659 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Frank Carson (23-R 1-2 10.07) Rookie vs. POR: Tom Horn (26-L 1-1 1.86)

Carson, who I tried to trade for a back before Year I, has had 4 starts. In his last 2, he has walked 11 in 6.1 IP and given up 13 runs.

Horn has gone at least 8 innings in his two starts so far this year. His last outing was on April 28, when he got hurt breaking up a double play on the base paths. He has been counseled against trying that in the future.

Castillo steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Phil Parker throws the ball into center... We walk Ivan Gallegas intentionally. Greg Werner beats out an infield hit and Castillo scores... 4 to 3, Bears. Rob Douma strikes out. 2 down. Dave Bell takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up. Milo Robertson grounds a hit to left and 2 runs score.... 6 to 3, Bears. PH Wally Dardick (29-L) is sent up. Call to the Bullpen: Dave Perez (25-L). Dardick beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded again. John Dobosh swings at a 3-2 pitch and flies out to left... Our Bullpen used to be good...

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Dave Doss (26-R). 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 13.1 IP. Johnny Foerster stays in to play center and Wally Dardick stays in to play right. With 1 out, Pablo Mateo, Damien Carr and Tony Casarez all hit singles and Mateo scores. 6 to 4, Bears. Gordon Saunderson loops a hit to right and the bases are loaded with 1 out. PH Dennis Webb (26-L) grounds into a force at home, 3-2. 2 outs. That brings up Eddie Thomas against a righty and we cannot pinch-hit for him, because who would play short? He swings at a 2-2 pitch and doubles off the center field wall and 2 runs score to tie the game at 6!! PH Larry Sinchak (32-R) flies out to deep right.

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (31-L). Dennis Webb stays in to catch. Johnny Foerster grounds one to short and Eddie Thomas, our Gold Glover, throws the ball away for a 2 base error... PH Tony Jimenez (29-R), 0 for 1 on the season, strikes out. We walk Ivan Gallegas intentionally again. With Greg Werner at the plate, they Bears try to pull off a double steal and C Phil Parker goes to 2nd to nail Gallegas! 2 outs. Greg Werner pops out to 1st!

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Alex Bartkowiak (26-R), their closer, with a 3.09 ERA. 1-0 with 8 SV and none blown. Omar Flores leads off with a 4 pitch walk! Jeff Schottler grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Flores goes to 2nd. Pablo Mateo lines a hit to center and Flores is at 3rd before CF Johnny Foerster, not known for a strong arm, picks up the ball but he is held up... Mateo steals the first base of his career. I do not like taking that risk, though. And now they will walk Damien Carr for sure... They do NOT walk Carr and he strikes out... 2 outs. And now they walk Tony Casarez intentionally to load the bases up. Gordon Saunderson sends one deep to left, but it is caught at the warning track...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:

With 1 out, Dave Bell doubles to center. We walk Milo Robertson intentionally. Wally Dardick doubles to center and Bell scores... 7 to 6, Bears. John Dobosh is walked intentionally. Thursday, May 22, Year III

Woody Griesbach (25-R) is back! So we activated him from the DL and sent 3B Pete Frey (24-L) back to Vancouver (AAA).

Denver Bears (24-14 .632 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (27-15 .643 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Dennis Warrington (32-R 1-1 3.96) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 3-1 2.25) 2 time All-Star

Warrington was signed as a minor league free agent after he was released by Baltimore. We was 1-1 against us in 3 starts for Seattle in Year I.

Panighetti allowed 10 hits and 4 runs and did not strike out a batter in 7 IP in his last outing. In Year I, he was 2nd in the PCL in SO with 181, which is the main reason we traded for him... This year he is walking more than he is striking out, but after Angel Gaspar was roughed up yesterday, he is now 2nd in the PCL in ERA.

Top of the Second:
The Bears go down in order on 5 pitches again!

Top of the Third:
After retiring the first 6 batters on 10 pitches, it takes P Don Panighetti 8 pitches to get leadoff hitter Bob Pritchett to fly out to center, 6 more to strike out Mike Carpenter and 4 to strike out P Dennis Warrington.

Mike Carpenter grounds out to 3rd and Pritchett goes to 2nd, but Douma holds at 3rd. PH Juan Perez (33-L) takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up. PH Dave Bell (27-R) is sent up for Luis Castillo. Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (28-R) to try for another blown save... Damien Carr comes in to play 1st in a double switch. Bell grounds out to short!!

Editor's Note: And I just realize that I pulled Panighetti when he still had a shutout intact... I don't like to do that, but I panicked... Don't want to get swept...

Top of the Eighth:
With 1 out, Yasuji Urata hits a home run to right... 2 to 1, Beavers. That is the 5th HR allowed by P Don Schmidt in only 25.2 IP... He allowed only 7 in 99.1 IP last year....

After he beat us and beat us good, yesterday, the Astros traded P Enoch Taylor (30-R) to New York for OF Melvin Cisneros (26-L), an unintelligent slacker who can run and has a good arm, but still does not play good defense. On offense he has hit for a good average before (.314 in 331 AB in Year II), but is hitting only .191 this year. He has no power.

Top of the First:

Bob Webster swings at a 3-2 pitch a triples off the wall in right center... Don Mosley swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to the pitcher. Bill Henning swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles down the right field line and Webster scores... 1 to 0, Astros. Rick Dill swings at the first pitch and flies out to deep left. Dave Longman strikes out!

Bottom of the First:

Omar Flores flies out to shallow right. Jeff Schottler swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to left. Pablo Mateo grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Top of the Second:

Gary Warner nubs one in front of the plate, but reaches 2nd when C Phil Parker makes a horrible throw... Steve Coker grounds out to 2nd and Warner goes to 3rd. Russ Mitchell grounds a hit to left and Warner scores... 2 to 0, Astros.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Steve Coker swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to center. Russ Mitchell grounds a hit to left. P Johnny Maskell bunts the runners up. With 2 outs, Bob Webster grounds a hit to center and both runners score... 4 to 0, Astros. The Bullpen is up. P Bob Grigg picks Webster off at 1st.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Finally, we get something going when Woody Griesbach leads off with a 4 pitch walk and Phil Parker doubles to left center. Dave Lesley lines a 2-2 pitch to center and both runners score! 4 to 2, Astros. PH Tim Segal (37-R) bunts Lesley to 2nd... Omar Flores grounds a hit to center and Lesley stops at 3rd. Jeff Schottler takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up for Pablo Mateo, who grounded into one double play already... He swings at a 3-2 pitch a fouls out to the catcher.... 2 outs. Damien Carr pops out to short... I am not a happy camper right now...

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Woody Griesbach lines an 0-2 pitch to center for a hit and then goes to 2nd when P Johnny Maskell throws the ball away trying to pick him off. Phil Parker then hits a no doubt home run to right center!! Tie game: 4 to 4! Pablo Mateo and Damien Carr both pop out, but Phil Parker has a double and a home run today!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Andy Van Kuiken (29-R) and his 7.13 ERA. We lead off with 2 singles and double, but do not score a run because the two guys that singled, Omar Flores and Jeff Schottler, both get caught stealing... Pablo Mateo hit the double, but with 2 outs and the bases empty... They walk Damien Carr intentionally. Tony Casarez grounds out to the pitcher...

Top of the Eighth:

Rick Dill strikes out. Dave Longman doubles to right center... Bullpen is up. We walk Gary Warner intentionally... Steve Coker swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a double to center and Longman scores... 5 to 4, Astros. Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (28-R). That will be Lou Hertzberg's last game for a while; he is getting hammered and we have a youngster in AAA doing very well. We bring the infield in and Russ Mitchell grounds out to short and the runners hold. 2 outs. PH Dick Gottesman (33-L) grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Ron Gilmore (28-R), who has a 1.83 ERA. With 2 outs, Dave Lesley grounds a hit to center, PH Gordon Saunderson (28-L) strikes out...

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Dave Perez (25-L). With 1 out, Don Mosley lines a hit to right center. Bill Henning grounds a double over the first base bag and Mosley tries to score from 1st, but gets thrown out, 9-4-2! Henning ends up on 3rd. We walk Rick Dill intentionally... I am really tired of all these intentional walks....

Editor's Note:
I actually have the settings where we are getting fewer intentional walks than the actually had in 1982-87. The settings are not very finely tuned and one more click higher and we will have too many.

Dave Longman lines a 1-2 pitch to right for a hit and Henning scores and Dill beats the throw to 3rd... 6 to 4, Astros. Now, you could have let Rick Dill do that and we would not have a runner at 3rd right now... Gary Warner swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds one to 3rd, where Omar Flores boots it and the intentional walk scores... 7 to 4, Astros.... I am utterly perplexed as to why our Bullpen went from Prime Rib to Chopped Liver.... Steve Coker grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Lost - 7 to 4

Another stellar performance by the Bullpen: 4 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 6 H, 3 BB ( 3 INT) and 1 SO.

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors
Houston had 14 hits and made 1 error

Bob Grigg went 5 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Brian Dunbar went 1 perfect inning.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (L 2-4) went 1.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits (all doubles), 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 1.
RHP Don Schmidt faced 2 batters and retired them both.
LHP Dave Perez went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 3 hits and 1 walk (INT).

Johnny Maskell went 6 innings, gave us 4 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 1.
RHP Andy Van Kuiken (W 1-3) went 1 scoreless inning, even though he gave us 2 hits and 2 walks (1 INT) and only got 1 batter out...
RHP Ernie Auel (SV 6) pitched a scoreless 0th and gave us 1 walk.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits and a walk, but got caught stealing in a crucial situation and made a big error. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits and 2 walks, but also got caught stealing in a crucial situation. 2B Pablo Mateo hit a double that might of gone for 2 RBI, but went for none. RF Woody Griesbach had a hit and a walk and scored 2 runs. C Phil Parker hit a double and his 2nd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI.

For the Astros, 2B Bob Webster had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBI. LF Bill Henning had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI.

RP Lou Hertzberg (31-L), who, coming in to this season, had the lowest ERA of anyone in Baseball, has been waived to be sent to Vancouver (AAA). I don't think anyone will claim him, because the scouts have never liked him much, even when he was doing great. I am hoping he is not done as a Beaver, because he is one of my favorites. We called up Dave Bonneville (26-L), who in 23 IP for the Mounties has yet to allow a run. 0.74 WHIP. He came to us from Brooklyn in the same trade that brought SS Eddie Thomas.

Today is RF Tim Segal's 38th birthday.

Houston Astros (17-27 .386 8.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (28-17 .622 in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: Dave Cole (27-R 3-2 3.26) vs. POR: Tom Horn (26-L 1-1 2.05)

Cole, the ex-Beaver, held us to 2 earned runs in 6 IP when we faced him earlier this year in Houston.

Horn is 1-1, but has pitched well enough to be 3-0. In his 3 starts, he has not allowed more than 2 runs in any and has gone 8 innings or more twice and 7 innings the time he did not.

Top of the First:

Don Mosley flies out to right. Bob Trigg swings at the first pitch and doubles to left center. Dave Longman swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to right. Trigg stops at 3rd. Rick Gill flies out to right and Trigg tags up and gets thrown out at home by Woody Griesbach!

Damien Carr grounds a hit up the middle that would have scored Flores.... Mateo beats the throw to 3rd. Tony Casarez strikes out looking...

Bottom of the Second:

Woody Griesbach doubles down the right field line and P Dave Cole has to leave with an injury. New Pitcher: Charlie Sedgwick (36-R) with a 1.80 ERA and 14 H and 4 BB in 25 IP.... I would rather be batting against Cole... Phil Parker swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center! Griesbach stops at 3rd. Eddie Thomas walks to load the bases up with no outs! P Tom Horn lines out to center and Griesbach tags up and beats the throw home! 1 to 0, Beavers! Omar Flores swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center and Parker scored from 2nd without a throw! 2 to 0, Beavers! Eddie Thomas and Omar Flores pull off a double steal! Steve Coker lines a hit to center and Dill stops at 3rd. Bill Henning flies out to right and Dill tags up and beats the throw home. 3 to 2, Beavers. With 2 outs, Russ Mitchell hits one to short and Eddie Thomas makes a bad throw... P Charlie Sedgwick grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Woody Griesbach leads off with an infield hit and then steals 2nd. But the 7-8-9 hitters go down in order.

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher (finally): Danny True (24-R), a rookie with a 3.38 ERA in 16 IP. Omar Flores lines a hit to center and steals 2nd. Jeff Schottler beats out an infield hit and Flores goes to 3rd. Pablo Mateo lines a hit to center and Flores scores! But Schottler gets caught too far off 2nd and gets out in a run down.... 4 to 2, Beavers. 1 out. He does not even let Mateo get to 2nd... Damien Carr walks on 4 pitches. Tony Casarez lines a hit to right and the bases are loaded. Woody Griesbach takes a 3-2 pitch for an RBI! 5 to 2, Beavers! Phil Parker flies out to left and Carr tags up and scores. 6 to 2, Beavers! Eddie Thomas grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Top of the Eighth:

Dave Longman swings at the first pitch and hits a home run down the left field line. 6 to 3, Beavers. The Bullpen is up. With 1 out, Steve Coker doubles to right center... Call to the Bullpen: Tom Wagner (35-L). Bill Henning strikes out looking! Gary Warner walks. Russ Mitchell grounds out to the pitcher!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (28-R). PH Dick Gottesman (33-L) grounds hit to right... Don Mosley lifts one to center, but Jeff Schottler drops the ball for a 2 base error... Bob Trigg grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and the runners hold. Dave Longman strikes out! 2 down. 1-2 pitch to Rick Dill and he swings and hits a double to left center and both runners score... 6 to 5, Beavers. 0-2 pitch to Bob Webster and he swings a hits a double down the left field line to tie the game at 6 all.... 6th blown save for Don Schmidt, the reigning Fireman Trophy winner in the PCL. He has 5 saves and 6 blown chances.... He had 6 blown saves total in Year I and II combined! And we are still in May! We are going to have to trade for a right-handed closer... Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (26-L). Bill Henning walks... Gary Warner swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center and Websters beats the throw home... 7 to 6, Astros and we are going to get swept at home by the team with the worst record in the League. Because we have no Bullpen at all... Russ Mitchell lines a hit to center and Henning scores... 8 to 6, Astros. Dick Gottesman strikes out..

We go down in order in the bottom of the 9th...

Lost - 8 to 6

Another stellar outing for our Bullpen: 1.2 IP, 5 R (1 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 3 SO.

We had 14 hits and made 2 errors
Houston had 14 hits and made no errors

Tom Horn went 7.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a SF.

Random Factoid:
The Beavers' Bullpen ERA in May is 4.83.... .312 BA against is the worst in the Baseball. Only Seattle has a higher ERA (5.09), because their relievers have allowed 16 HR in 76 IP! The Seals have allowed 9 and then the Beavers are tied for 3rd most with 4. Our starters have the best May ERA at 3.34.

The team has the day off, but not me.

Trade #22:
SP Bob Grigg (25-R) and his medical records plus 4 minor league OF's: Ron Camilleri (25-L), Felipe Estrada (22-L), Vic Gilliam (23-R), and Gabe Wittmann (20-L) to Houston for RP Ernie Auel (29-R), RP Danny True (24-R) and two minor leaguers: SP Don Hamilton (22-L) and RP Pat Quinn (23-R).

Grigg has got definite talent as his 10-2 record and 2.45 ERA last year will attest, but his injury issues are problematic. Camilleri is a 25 year old playing in A ball. 'Nuff said. Estrada was playing in AA. He was an international amateur free agent signing for $125,000. He does not play good defense and his bat does not look like anything too get too excited about. Wittmann was our 7th round pick in the Year I draft. He plays good D and has hit for a decent average in the minors, but does not seem to like to walk much or hit for any power. Gilliam was hitting .190 in A Ball and is not a great defender.

Auel was the Angels' closer in Year I and II and had 72 SV and a 1.95 ERA for them. Last year, he gave up only 39 H in 66 IP. This year he has 7 SV and a 3.22 ERA for the Astros, including 2 saves against us in the last two games of this past weekend series. True was pitching for the Astros in the Majors, but made the jump from A Ball and will be sent to New Orleans (AA). He is not a great talent, it seems, but may prove useful someday. SP Hamilton was picked in the supplemental portion of the first round last year (35th overall) and was on our draft wish list. Quinn was picked in the 10th round of the Year I draft and is not much of a prospect. But if he can overcome some control issues, he might be useful.

The Kansas City Royals are here to play a 2 game set and finish up this miserable home stand. We are 3-6 and guaranteed to have a losing record for the 11 games of home cooking. The Royals won 2 of 3 in Los Angeles over the weekend. We won 2 of 3 in Kansas City the first time we met them, May 6-8. They are 6th in scoring in the PCL with 4.30 runs per game (Portland is 5th with 4.48). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.33 per game (Portland is still #1, believe it or not, with 3.61 per game). Scoring is way up this year in the PCL.

Kansas City Royals (22-21 .512 2.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (28-18 .609 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Troy Levine (26-L 1-2 4.66) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (24-R 3-2 2.38)

In his last start, Levine allowed 3 hits and 1 run in 8.2 IP. We faced him earlier and scored 5 runs in 5.2 innings, though he had a no decision.

Gaspar has lost his last two starts and allowed 5 runs in 5.2 IP in his most recent...

Jeff Schottler lines a hit to left. He steals 2nd. Tom Segal lines out to short and they double Schottler off base... Woody Griesbach grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Fifth:
Ed Gladney leads off with only their second hit of the game. Lance Jernigan grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Ernie McGuire walks on 4 pitchers. Jose Muniz swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines a hit to center and Jernigan scores... 1 to 0, Royals. P Troy Levine bunts the runners up to bring up Alejandro Prieto with 2 outs. He grounds out to 1st, unassisted!

Bottom of the Ninth:
Still 1 to 0, Royals and P Troy Levine still on the mound. Pablo Mateo leads off with a 436 foot blast to left! Tie game! 1 to 1. Dave Lesley grounds a hit to right. Pinch-Runner: Eddie Thomas (27-R). They pull the lefty Levine and bring in a new pitcher: Bob Cornell (32-R) with a 4.41 ERA in 16.1 IP, but a 2.45 ERA last year. I think I would have let the lefty pitch to Damien Carr, who is MUCH better against right-handers... At least, before I just jinxed him... Carr flies out to center. 1 out. PH Tony Casarez (21-L) is sent up for C Phil Parker. Thomas tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out... 2 down and the bases empty... Casarez doubles to left... Might have ended the game without the caught stealing... PH Omar Flores (22-L) is sent up for Larry Sinchak. He grounds out to short...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Dave Perez (25-L). Dennis Webb is in to catch, Eddie Thomas stays in to play short, Omar Flores plays 3rd, Tony Casarez is in left and Woody Griesbach moves to right. That leaves Gordon Saunderson as our only player left on the bench. PH Roberto Gil (28-L) pops one up to shallow center and it falls among three players standing around looking at each other... PH Pedro Fuentes (31-R), their starting 1st baseman is up. He grounds into a 5-4-3 double play! Alejandro Prieto strikes out!!

Bottom of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Rich Kinney (34-R), their closer with a 5.14 ERA and 4 losses and 6 SV. 1 of the losses was to us and 1 of the saves was against us. Dennis Webb strikes out... Jeff Schottler flies out to right... We let P Dave Perez make the last out and he does...

Top of the Eleventh:
They go down in order!

Bottom of the Eleventh:
Woody Griesbach leads off with a 4 pitch walk, but Pablo Mateo grounds into a 5-4-3 double play... Eddie Thomas then hits a 426 foot home run to left center!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!! He has done it again!!!
