The Idaho League (est. 2019)

The Idaho League, established in 2019, is designed for two core purposes – 1) to give the people of Idaho a regular, consistent, easily connectable league of baseball to not only watch but also participate in, and 2) to offer the former MLB rookie leaguers, the ones that never quite made it, a vital opportunity at making a living, if only for a small while, playing the game that they love. Playing over an 80-game competition, the six teams taking part this year are:

- Coeur d’Alene White Wings
- Idaho Falls Maulers
- Caldwell 97s
- Twin Falls Elephants
- Boise Steamrollers
- Pocatello Suns

The top two teams, at the end of the season, will play a seven-game season called the Idaho Cup. The first-placed side, given it’s a one-division competition, will win the Idaho Trophy (possibly to be renamed), but the Cup, truly, is the one that everyone wants.

Come to the ballpark, grab your favourite drink and snack, and have a glorious day watching America’s Pastime in the beautiful state of Idaho.

Opening Day and Idaho celebrates its first day of statewide independent baseball with three fantastic days at three fantastic ballparks.

Idaho Falls Maulers (0-0) @ (0-0) Twin Falls Elephants

The first game, played at the Elephants Ballpark in Twin Falls, featured the eponymous home team facing off against the Idaho Falls Maulers in front of a crowd of 2882. Idaho Falls 1B Steve Phelps had the distinct pleasure of being the first man in Idaho League history to score a hit, with a two-out, no-on double in the top of the 2nd, but it was Twin Falls shortstop Ted Oney, batting in RF Juan Flores, who scored the first ever RBI. Idaho Falls hit HR #1 and #2 back to back in the 4th, with LF Dave Steelman and 2B Joe Davis doing the damage.

Nevertheless, it was to be the home team, the Twin Falls Elephants, that would claim the win. They did all their damage early, scoring one in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd, while restricting the Maulers to the two aforementioned home runs. Idaho Falls 2 @ 5 Twin Falls

Caldwell 97s (0-0) @ (0-0) Coeur d’Alene White Wings

The White Wings may have struck first, with a run in the 3rd and another in the 6th, as well as outhitting their opponents 13 runs to 9, but a late hustle from the 97s saw them spoil the home side’s opening day as the game ended Caldwell 97s 5 @ 2 Coeur d’Alene White Wings.

Chase Whitley, starter for the White Wings (and cup-of-coffee earner with the Tampa Bay Rays), picked up the POTG award after 6 innings of shutout baseball, giving up only 3 hits while striking out 7, but all his hard work was undone in 17 pitches by Scott Harkin, who leaked four hits, including two doubles, and picking up both the BS and the L in the process.

Pocatello Suns (0-0) @ (0-0) Boise Steamrollers

In Boise, it was the visiting Pocatello Suns that claimed the glory today, scoring four within the first four innings – two in the first and two in the fourth – to hold off a spirited Steamrollers’ 5th, propelled by Dan Jennings’ triple. Ultimately, the game ended Pocatello 4 @ 2 Boise.

A three-hit day from Josh Haggard was notably frustrating for Boise, who outhit the Suns 8-to-7, as he was amazingly unable to convert any runs, nor be converted by hitters, on any of the attempts. Impressively, Jadon Gertman did his job perfectly for Pocatello, closing out the 9th with three strikeouts in only 17 pitches.

If yesterday was the Great Beginning, then today was the Great Leveller – only two days into the Idaho League’s running, we have no teams with 100% or 0% records in the competition! Let’s see what happened on the ballpark…

Pocatello Suns (1-0) @ (0-1) Boise Steamrollers

In a tentative game only featuring 11 hits between the two sides, the Boise Steamrollers inched ahead of the Suns, aided partially by a three-walk 8th from Pocatello reliever Josh Kramb which helped the home side score a decisive two more. Ultimately, the game ended Pocatello 3 @ 4 Boise.

Nevertheless, the game wasn’t without its drama, as in the upper 9th, CL Darrell Iannarone walked Jose Gonzalez on two outs, and could only watch as Jose Tonton jacked a monster homer out left to bring the game within a run. Luckily for the Steamrollers (and for Iannarone’s save), 2B Josh Prince hit an infield fly to end the game in Boise’s favour.

It was a battle of the Bobby’s, as fantastic pitching performances from both Maulers’ man Bobby Pasternack and Twin Falls’ Bobby Everett ensured that this game would be kept on a knife-edge from start to finish – however, a 2-run 4th was to be the difference, as Idaho Falls overcame the Twin Falls Elephants. Idaho Falls 3 @ 1 Twin Falls.

“It was a fantastic battle between Bobby and I,” said the 27-year-old Idaho Falls starter, born in Rexburg, after the game. “He played really well, maybe even better than me for most the game. But I’m glad to have kept my concentration and come away with the win.” Pasternack remarkably only has one confident pitch, his super-heated fastball, but is reportedly working hard on his curveball too.

Caldwell 97s (1-0) @ (0-1) Coeur d’Alene White Wings

The White Wings took their fans on an emotional rollercoaster this evening against the 97s, but eventually came away with the result of Caldwell 1 @ 2 Coeur d’Alene.

After scoring the sole run of the game in the upper 7th, Kurt Allen’s base hit being enough to push 3B Josh Skuse over the plate, all the 97s needed to do was get through the bottom 9th unscathed and they had a team shutout on their hands. However, CL Erik Clack couldn’t stop his first adversary, Greg Neese, from clocking an impressive boundary hit to tie the game. Proceedings then continued for a very tit-for-tat three more innings, until Coeur d’Alene third baseman Jon Church jacked a homer off 97s reliever Josh Doyle. The game may only have ended at just gone 9:15 from a 5 p.m. start, but White Wings fans went home exhilarated following the league’s first ever walk-off.

Pocatello Suns (1-1) @ (1-1) Boise Steamrollers

Boise tried to open their season right with a home-series winning record, but after Pocatello weighed in today, the best they can hope for is to salvage the 2-2 tomorrow. The Suns went in hard and early, scoring 7 runs by the end of the 4th inning and, despite making an incredible four errors (shortstop Pat Novara made 2), restricted the Steamrollers to only four runs in the entire game. Final score: Pocatello 9 @ 4 Boise.
Steamrollers starter Jeff Payton had a horrible start, only playing 3.2 innings before being subbed off for Steve Post. Despite leaking six he’ll only be charged with three, despite the three runs coming from a Brad Wink error and two wild pitches. Not a good day at the office.

Idaho Falls Maulers (1-1) @ (1-1) Twin Falls Elephants

The Maulers managed to bookend the game today with 2-RBI home runs, which ultimately provided enough for the Maulers to win, and for the game to have some talking points in an otherwise reasonably unexciting game. The Elephants only hit 5 all game and were only able to get one of their own following a Randy Bell home run – final score, Idaho Falls 4 @ 1 Twin Falls.

Interestingly, despite winning the game and only leaking the solitary run through an indefensible shot (a home run), the Maulers only struck out the one Elephant in all 9 innings – and that was in the 9th, following 8 shrewdly played but K-less innings from finesse pitcher Steve Hansen.

Game notes: – Elephants starter Mark Sweet was shipped off the field after 16 pitches, at the end of the 1st inning. He will now miss four weeks with a herniated disc in his back.


Caldwell 97s (1-1) @ (1-1) Coeur d’Alene White Wings

They say that lightning never strikes twice, but ask a member of the White Wings after today’s game and they might smile at you and suggests that, maybe, it does – for the second time in as many days, Coeur d’Alene have beaten Caldwell, with all their RBIs coming from homers. The only difference is, Caldwell had no response to the White Wings today, as the scoreline reflected: Caldwell 0 @ 3 Coeur d’Alene.

If some of his exploits are to be taken as proof, White Wing starter Pat Burcroff (who took the POTG award) was having the time of his life out there – he drilled a double off Chris Rand in the 3rd and was only stranded on third, and after being walked in the 6th, he managed to steal his way to second and got thrown out having a cheeky go at third!

Idaho Falls Maulers (2-1) @ (1-2) Twin Falls Elephants

After taking a slender lead in the bottom of the 1st, the Elephants enjoyed a fantastic ding-dong game against the Maulers – one that, no matter what Idaho Falls threw at them, Twin Falls always seemed to come up trumps in the end. A great pitching performance and an error in the 5th from Maulers’ shortstop Ricky Dean saw that the game ended Idaho Falls 3 @ 5 Twin Falls Elephants.

After Steve Phelps’ 2-man home run in the 5th ended Phil Hebert’s no-hitter bid with a crash, Idaho Falls had a great opportunity to make the Elephants’ lives very hard indeed. In the bottom of the 5th, with Kahoohalahala on third and Juan Flores on first, with Zavala having flown out, a routine grounder from Frazzini – into what should’ve been a double play – was muffed by Ricky Dean. Kahoohalahala reached home on the error to equalise and then, to add insult to injury, Elephants catcher Randy Bell launched a howitzer over the left-hand wall to surge Twin Falls ahead, 5-2. Amazing how a simple error can change a game.

With 6 hits apiece, only three combined runs in the entire game and all three of those runs scored by the bottom of the second, it was an absolute nailbiter for fans of both the Suns and the Steamrollers as neither team seemed capable of breaking the other one down. In the end, it was the Pocatello Suns that came out on top, their two runs in the top of the 1st being enough to earn them the win – and, importantly, becoming the only side in the Idaho League to leave the first series with a true winning record. Of course, this leaves Boise as the only side with a true losing one. Pocatello 2 @ 1 Boise.

Caldwell 97s (1-2) @ (2-1) Coeur d’Alene White Wings

After two days of being embarrassed by White Wings slugging it was due time for the 97s to return the favour today – and they did so with spectacular ease, mashing three boundaries, out-hitting their opponents 8-to-4 and, ultimately finishing Caldwell 8 @ 4 Coeur d’Alene. At no point did the White Wings even look like winning, with the 97s already 5-1 up by the end of the 3rd and almost entirely shutting them out after that.

The 97s benefitted hugely from the waking-up of German slugger 1B Florian Rosen, who after three games, twelve at-bats, zero hits and a 41.7% strikeout rate managed to find three hits in his bag today – extraordinarily, two dingers and a double. “It was a case of when, not if, and we all knew that,” said Caldwell manager Steve Burkeen after the game, “but it feels great for everyone that this monkey’s finally off Florian’s back”. Also having an amazing game was Caldwell starter Elvis Cunnien, who struck out 8 in 8 innings while leaking the solitary run.

Coeur d’Alene White Wings (2-2) @ (1-3) Boise Steamrollers

The Steamrollers will likely feel hard done-by at the end of today, outhitting their opponents 11-to-6, but two colossal errors from Rollers SP Curt Flynn and CF Josh Wooten, as well as Flynn’s 6 walks, went a long way to seeing the White Wings score more runs than they did hits. Final score: Coeur d’Alene 7 @ 5 Boise.

Were it not for his error in the 4th, Wooten may well have claimed Player of the Game honours, hitting two-from-five, with a 2-RBI homer and a stolen base to boot. However, if we’re talking deciding differences then Mike Jungers’ 3rd home run of the season, clocking for three RBI (and Flynn’s 92nd and final pitch of the day), was the split between victory and defeat for the White Wings.

Idaho Falls Maulers (2-2) @ (2-2) Caldwell 97s

Caldwell were hoping to start their first home series of the season with a victory against Idaho Falls, but the best they were able to do was to fashion an admittedly spirited, but ultimately failing comeback in the final three innings, after going down 8-0 to the Maulers. In the end, the game finished Idaho Falls 8 @ 5 Caldwell.

Eric Reece, Maulers manager, had to say after the game “getting the W was fantastic, but we relied too much on our first half and Danny [Click, starter] and it became really obvious as the game went on that the 97s were clawing their way back in. I’ll be keen to ensure we can keep our concentration as the bullpen comes through, for sure.”

Twin Falls Elephants (2-2) @ (3-1) Pocatello Suns

A monster performance from Suns shortstop Pat Novara wasn’t enough to prevent a Twin Falls side, firing on all cylinders, from taking the victory today in Pocatello. While the Suns didn’t help their case with three errors, Twin Falls started well and continued to impress, with an insurmountable 7-1 scoreline at the top of the 6th. Ultimately, Twin Falls took their third win of the season, Twin Falls 7 @ 4 Pocatello.

With 5 players having multi-hit days, the Elephants were hard-pressed to lose this one. CF Dave Frazzini was a close-runner for Player of the Game (which eventually went to Pat Novara, whose 7 bases weren’t even close to matched), as his clutch base-hits batted-in what would ultimately be the 3-run difference between the two sides.
