In a rather lackluster fight, Adrien Broner went to France & picked up his 3rd belt winning the WBA WW strap from Frederic Klose on a 10th round cut TKO.

Broner was up 217 to 174 in PL & all 3 judges had the brash American ahead 87-84.

Klose falls to 6-3-1.

Ray Mancini continued his comeback @ 140 winning the fringe IBO belt over Lanardo Tyner by SD.

Tyner won the belt by a MD over Mike Alvarado in Oct. An uppercut for a 6 count in the 13th propelled Tyner to that win.

There were no KD's in this fight as Ray started strong but Tyner's youth (14 years younger) appeared to help the champ as the fight wore on.

In the end, Ray got the nod 143-142 on 2 cards, the other 143-142 for Tyner. LT also was up 367 to 315 in PL & accuracy: 28% to 23%.

Rather than face mandatory challenger, Carl Froch, Noe Gonzalez Alcoba (IBO SMW champ) vacated his belt & dropped to 160 to take on IBF MW champ Roberto Santos in Spain.

What was a pretty good fight turned to controversy when Andrade (a ref from Uruguay) DQ'ed Santos for hitting on the break in the 15th round. It was Roberto's 6th foul in the fight.

Noe was up 300 to 237 in PL & ahead on all 3 cards 132-131 but it appeared the South American ref saved a tiring Noe with the DQ win. Santos had won every round on all 3 cards from the 11th to the 14th. Had Santos won the 15th on 2 of the 3 cards he would have retained the belt.

Kelly Pavlik came into the 1st defense of his WBC SMW belt almost as we'd expect: evidently not in tip top shape.

And it almost cost him his belt as Pavlik's plan to just out slug & KO Joseph Kwadjo backfired in the 8th. JK dropped Kelly & almost stopped him - scoring 33 points in the process.

A big 13th where Kelly dropped Kwadjo twice helped the champ rally on the scorecards in the end: 143-140 & 142-140 twice.

PL were almost even with KP up 335 to 309, both fighters landing 26% of their shots.

Kelly is now 8-0, 6 KO's @ 168.

WBC/IBF LW unification

A rough night for Brazil!

1st Silva loses his bid to reclaim his UFC belt & then boxing hero Acelino Freitas also falls short.

IBF LW champ Freitas appeared in control due to his superior boxing skills until the 6th when WBC LW champ, Edwin Valero, turned up the heat & stopped a hurt Acelino @ 2:51 of the round. His left eye was also red due to Edwin's brutal power shots.

AF was up on all 3 cards 49-46, PL had Valero ahead 169-161. Freitas was much more accurate landing 46% of his shots to Edwin's 27%.

Valero remains perfect @ 135: 6-0, all KO's.

AF is now 13-2 @ LW with 10 KO's.

Darren Barker didn't let his 2nd shot @ a world title slip away & he fought like a man possessed in taking the WBA MW belt from Curtis Stevens - making his 1st defense.

Barker was faster & much more accurate in the 1st 3 rounds. It wasn't until the 4th when the champ finally appeared to find his rhythm & fight back.

In the 7th, Barker missed with a right cross but his follow up left hook dropped Stevens for a 3 count. At that point Darren would not be denied & the ref stepped in @ 2:48 for the TKO.

Darren is now 9-1 (7 KO's) - his lone loss via DQ to Daniel Jacobs for the IBO belt.

Stevens suffers his 1st defeat @ 160: 7-1, 6 KO's. (his left eye was swelling - orange)

All 3 judges had the fight 58-56 for Darren & Barker was up 243 (49%) to 112 (22%) in PL.

In a great fight for the vacant IBF JWW strap, 2 old warriors fought a classic as Ike Quartey's power proved to be the difference over Marco Antonio Barrera.

Ike had the slight PL edge 368 (25.4%) to 360 (25.3%) & won on the cards (143-138, 146-134, 144-137).

Ike's big edge was in KD's: 4 to 1.

It looked promising early for Firat Arslan in his 2nd CW title shot. Firat's punches swelled up both eyes in the 1st 2 rounds of the WBO champ - Ilunga Makabu. Things took a turn for the worse in the 3rd however as Makabu came out firing & dropped Firat with a hook for a count of 3.

Late in the round a Makabu upper ended Firat's night @ 2:56.

It was Makabu's 2nd title defense & Firat's 2nd loss - his previous loss coming to WBA champ, Wayne Braithwaite.

After the 1st round of Gennady Golovkin's 1st defense of his WBC MW title, it appeared to just be a matter of when Randy Griffin would be stopped.

Randy proved to be much more durable than he 1st appeared lasting until a right cross @ 2:08 of the 15th finally kept Griffin down for the full count of 10. It was Randy's 8th & final time hitting the mat over the 15 round fight.

GGG was in total control of the fight & cards: 137-122 & 138-121 twice.

He was up in PL as well: 363 (23%) to 227 (44%).

GGG improves to 17-0 with 12 KO's.

Adrien Broner grabbed his 4th belt in a different weight class dropping down to 140 to pick up the WBA JWW belt.

Broner (the WBA WW champ) said he wanted to give Mike Arnaoutis a St. Valentine's Day massacre type of beating.

Mike had other plans & early his D & boxing ability gave the brash Broner problems. In the 4th, a hard body shot from AB hurt Mike & may have broken a rib or two?

Early in the 8th, an awkward punch from Mike damaged his hand forcing an end due to injury - potentially his 2nd serious one in the fight.

Mike was making the 7th defense of his title & falls to 19-3-1. His previous 2 losses were in title fights - both by split decisions.

Mike was up 205 (39%) to 136 (22%) in PL but 2 judges had AB up 67-66 while the 3rd had Mike leading 67-66.

Khoren Gevor's 2nd title defense of his WBO SMW belt got off to a great start in the 1st round when a hard left cross from Gevor sent rugged American challenger, Iran Barkley, to the canvas for a 6 count.

From that point on, the large American took control & out boxed the champ winning a UD: 146-138 & 144-140 on the other 2 cards to win the belt & decision in Germany.

Iran out punched Gevor 413 (31%) to 312 (29%) as well.

Gevor will now drop back down to 160 to defend his WBO MW belt later this year.

In a stay busy defense, Travis Simms dispatched Joey "Twinkle Fingers" Hernandez with a counter hook KO in the 3rd round.

It was Simms' 9th defense of his IBO JMW belt & improves to 21-2-2 with 15 KO's.

Travis hopes to get a big fight later this spring or summer.

In the 1st defense of his IBF JMW belt, Poland's Pawel Wolak got all he could handle from current IBO WW champ - Willie Nelson.

Nelson's size & reach gave the Pole problems early but as the fight wore on, Wolak was able to put more & more effective pressure on the lanky American.

Wolak impressively took the title with a 5th round KO of K-9 Bundrage last year but tonight had to hang on to earn the 15MD: 142-141, 141-140, 141-141.

Wolak hit the deck once earlier in the fight but rallied to drop Nelson twice in the later rounds - that turned out to be the difference.

The PL were dead even @ 337 each while Nelson had the slight edge in accuracy, 27% to Wolak's 26%.

Austin Trout decided to make his 1st defense of his WBA JMW belt in Spain against seasoned vet - Javier Castillejo.

Early on, things looked great for the unbeaten champ as an overhand left dropped Javier in the 2nd for a 4 count.

From that point on however, Javier dominated swelling up both of Trout's eyes in the process.

JC won on the cards: 146-140, 147-138 & 146-142.

Javier also dominated in PL: 360 to 225 landing an impressive 46% of his shots to a measly 12% by Trout.

The old Spanish warhorse proved he's not done yet improving to 22-4 @ 154.

Trout suffers his 1st defeat & is now 11-1.

Newly crowned WBO LHW champ, Tony Bellew, did all he could to avoid facing the fearsome Russian puncher, Sergey Kovalev, in his 1st title defense.Tony's efforts failed.

Bellew won the title in December due to a low blow in the 15th from champ Juergen Braehmer & resulted in his DQ.

Tony came out strong winning the 1st round surprising the Russian with hard & fast punches.

From that point, Sergey took over, a combo in the 4th sent Tony to the deck for a 7 count. In the 5th, Sergey continued his assault & another combo, liver shot & final upper dropped Tony 3 times in the 5th causing the fight to be waved off by the ref.

Sergey was up 39-35 & 39-36 twice on the cards & also PL: 150 (38%) to 69 (23%).

WBO WW champ, Selcuk Aydin, hoped to look more impressive in the 4th defense of his title. He had a controversial SD win over Tim Bradley in Germany last year, a fight many thought Tim had won.

He appeared to be well on his way to doing just that until the 8th round when rugged African challenger, Joseph Makaringe, decided to turn up the heat. Both fighters went @ it until a hard upper from Joseph ended matters @ 2:57 of the 8th.

Aydin was ahead on the cards 67-65 & 69-63 twice @ the time of the sudden ending. Joseph held the slight edge in PL, 186-185 but the challenger was much more accurate: 45% to Aydin's 22%.

Joseph improves to 14-2-1 (10 KO's) - his draw to current longtime WBC champ, Thomas Damgaard.

Aydin suffers his 1st defeat & is now 10-1 (9 KO's).

IBO MW champ, Peter Quillin, took his show on the road to the boxing hotbed of Vienna, Austria to make his 1st defense.

The unbeaten Marcos Nader (originally from Spain) played host & didn't greet the new champion warmly. In fact Nader was in control until an uppercut from the champ dropped Marcos in the 4th - the ending came @ 2:52 of the round as Peter kept punching until the ref stepped in.

Quillin improves to 10-1 (all KO's) while Nader was ahead 102-84 in PL & also lead 2 of the 3 cards (30-27) - the 3rd judge had Peter up 29-28.

3 title defense in Europe

Khoren Gevor made his 2nd defense of his WBO MW belt with a 15 SD over Willie Gibbs in Germany. Gevor won the belt via a 15 SD & now both his title defenses were also by SD. Gevor is 16-0-1 with 7 KO's.

Chad Dawson improved to 16-1 @ 175 with a 12 TKO over Beibut Shumenov. Chad dropped Beibut twice in the 12th & gave Beibut his 1st loss (now 10-1 with 9 KO's). It was also Chad's 12th defense of his WBA LHW crown.

In Hungry, Bernard Hopkins made the 4th defense of his IBO LHW strap with a 15 UD over Zsolt Erdei. Erdei surprised & dropped BHop in the 8th for an 8 count. In the 14th, BHop returned the favor with a left hook for a count of 5. Hopkins is now 9-1 @ 175 & Zsolt's 17-3.

In a fight that may happen in real life in June, Devon Alexander moved to 8-0 @ WW with a 15 UD over the always tough, Jesus Soto Karass.

A hard uppercut from Devon in the 4th for a count of 8 was the only KD in the fight as Devon cruised to the UD due to his superior boxing skills.

Devon out punched Jesus 448 (52%) to 213 (15%).

It was Devon's 4th defense of his IBF belt while Jesus drops to 10-2 (10 KO's).

Newly crowned WBA JMW champ Javier Castillejo traveled to Australia to make his 1st defense against Anthony Mundine. Javier thought it would be a relatively easy defense against what appeared to be a fighter past his prime - Mundine was KO'd in 1 round last year by Craig McEwan when he challenged for the WBA MW belt.

Early on, the 2 went back & forth - each giving as good as he took but by the 4th, Mundine's relative youth (7 years younger) & speed appeared to take over. Javier pressed the action as the fight wore on & dropped Mundine for a 4 count in the 9th. The tide appeared to be turning for the Spaniard until the 14th when an exhausted Javier was dropped twice in the round.

Mundine tried to avoid trouble in the 15th & held on for the UD: 143-141, 145-139, 143-140.

The PL was very close with Javier having a 339 (29%) to 327 (30%) edge.

Mundine is now 9-0-1 @ 154 & Javier's 22-5.
