The Grand Ole Game

THE FIRST SEASON OF PROFESIONAL BASEBALL

March 1871

Whenever thought we would get here but it has happened. A professional baseballleague will begin play this spring across nine cities across thebaseball-crazed country. For the first time ever, players will officially playfor a pennant and be paid to do so with salaries reaching up and over hundredsof dollars a season. Some of the most dynamic and wealthy individuals in thenation have come forward to back some of these new franchises and some of theplayers who have built legends in their own way locally will have chance tomake it big and be officially recognized.

Thepennant is a thing of beauty. To see it wave over a ballfield in a sign ofvictory and a season of struggle and fight end in triumph is something thatsurely will catch the imagination. Let us play ball, and let us introduce theteams and stars of this new historic day.

Aninaugural draft was taken where the nine teams took turns to choose from alltalent the country had to choose from. One hundred and seventeen playersregistered to play in the league. The order of the teams choosing was randomand the Philadelphia club known as the Athletics were able to choose first. Thechoice was George Zettlein, a 26-year-old pitcher from Williamsburg New York.

George Zettlein

1871 Season Preview

CLEVELAND FOREST CITYS

Clevelandwill have one of the best and most popular club on the circuit. Ross Barnes and Gat Stires are two of the most anticipated hitters any team coulddesire with Stires especially having shown the ability to hit a ball fartherthan any human. John McMullin thelefty on the line will have his work cut out for him, but Cleveland shouldproduce support for him.

BOSTON RED STOCKINGS

TheWright brothers have made their history already in this game and now they cometogether to lead a Boston club that everyone knows about. Manager Harry Wright will lean on his talentedbrother Geroge to lead the paradewith Joe Start and Fred Treacey adding depth. BobbyMatthews was the first pick for Boston, which may have been a risk worthtaking. This club has a distinct English connection from top to bottom, whichcould make things very interesting.

PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS

Alleyes will be on George Zettlein inPhilly where he is known as the ‘charmer’ and will bring a maturity and craftto the team. Cal McVey is anotherbig star who can handle the bat with anyone and is likely to display hisabilities to thousands. The remainder of the roster can be thin with the namesof Charlie Gould and Fred Conehoping to step up. Philly will be under pressure to defeat the New York andBoston clubs.

FORT WAYNE KERIOGAS

Managerand star player Jimmy Wood leadsthis team from Indiana and will be fun to see a team from the country take onthe big cities. Al Pratt is the toparm on the team and the expectation is that Pratt will pitch almost everyinning and keep his team in the thick of things. Denny Mack and Harry Schaferwho has the blushing nickname of Silk Stockings will look to round off a rosterthat may have challenges on defense and depth.

NEW YORK MUTUALS

Dick McBride is another player/manager thatis expected to hold the fortunes of a club, only this one has the weight of theBig Apple behind it. McBride is a sure talent who can get almost anyone out andwill be the general around the infield. Who else will step up for the Mutuals? Dickie Flowers brings a lot to thetable while Ned Connor and Everett Mills could see a breakout.Either way a team in New York is starting to feel pressure by a certain clubout of Brooklyn, many just plain feel this should not be the team representingthe region.

ROCKFORD FOREST CITYS

Thereseems to be a lot of talk about this particular ball club and the talent theyhave assembled. The big Indian CherokeeFisher was the top pick for the team and the location of this team in theMidwest could be a perfect setting for him. Still the Forests may have pulledoff a coup when they snagged LeviMeyerle in the second round who is one of the most exciting players in thegame and then later drafting catcher DeaconWhite who could easily had been a top pick for many clubs. Can a small townlike Rockford really field a team that can win a pennant? Enjoying the intrigueof the storyline of this ball club is part of the charm of an organized leagueseason.

TROY HAYMAKERS

Somewherein the middle of Michigan is another club that few expected to be along for theride. Lip Pike is the man at the helm who will surely be hard on hisballplayer but will also do his part on the diamond. A deep team with Ezra Sutton and Bill Lennon part of a lineup that does not have much of a weakspot. Asa Brainard could be thecomplete key to how well this team does as the ‘Count” at times can look likethe best arm one has ever seen and other time will serve meatballs. I hope thatthe baseball matches the scenery for the Haymakers.

WASHINGTON OLYMPICS

Albert Spalding is young but innovative andthe fact he is working in Washington can only be fitting. Spalding is full ofideas and strategy to help his team get an edge and on the mound he can throwthe tar out of the ball. Splading headlines a good team that also has Davy Force and Charlie Pabor who are already known stars. The Olympics expect tobe surefire contenders and maybe a long shot visit by the commander in Chief wouldnot be out of the question. This team will have the best equipment, fields, andstrategy to win most games.

CHICAGO WHITE STOCKINGS

Theteam by the lake will depend on a 21 year old star named Cap Anson who can play multiple positions and has hand eye skillrarely seen. The Whites may not be deep enough to win on a regular basis with Bill Stearns and Rynie Wolters trying to secure the role of star hurler. Count Sesenderfer is an odd bird and Tommy Beals will try to prove criticswrong; but when a 21-year-old green kid is you hope, things could go southfast.

FORT WAYNE COMES OUTFAST

APRIL 1871

FortWayne started the new season winning their first three games and putting therest of the league on notice. The offense has been turning in the runsincluding a 17 run outburst in a win against Chicago. AL Pratt is without adoubt the star of the week for the Kegiogas winning all three of the games onthe mound but also driving in seven runs in the process with the bat. ManagerJimmy Wood has also driven in five run while hitting 8 times in only 16 atbats.
Thefirst home run in the history of the league came out of Washington where DavyForce went deep against Troy. Force took Asa Brainard deep for the historic hitand did it in a 10-4 win for his team.

FERGUSON IMPRESSES IN BOSTON

BobFerguson of the Boston club has already gained the confidence of both hisdemanding manager and his demanding fans. Ferguson has emerged as the vocalleader of this important club and has brought the results with him hitting 9/15in the first four games of the season while stealing four bases and driving inthree. The Boston club has two wins and two losses thus far and the pitcher BobbyMathews has been the target of some murmurs about his performance. There areeven rumors that Ferguson can pitch the baseball if he is asked to. HarryWright continues to push his club for the long summer.
OutfielderFrank Barrows of Chicago hasn’t played an inning thus far and some concern wasbrought forth when the player stopped showing up for the team even though he isgetting paid, Some say Barrows has checked himself in to a local hospital andreasons are circulating as to what the real story is

WATERMAN 5-6 AGAINST MUTUALS

May 1871

Cleveland earned their second win of the season and Fred Waterman the third baseman madean impression getting 5 hits in six times at the plate in the 14-8 win. Watermanhas gotten 8 hits total in 16 at bats so far. Cleveland has won two of itsfirst three games on the season.
Rockfordhas struggled in the first month of the season losing five of its first sixgames and falling behind early in the pennant race. Although many of the losseswere close and Deacon White has started off well this season, farther bad playwill really challenge this team to turn their fortunes around.

Fort Wayne Embarrasses New York

Al Pratt continues his excellent season as he becomes the first pitcher to throw a complete game shutout and did so in front of the big stage of New York City. The game itself was also memorable for other reasons as little Fort Wayne embarrassed the Mutuals 19-0 on their home field and left fans astonished at the last out. A huge triumph for a little town and the press in New York are sure to continue to ignore the Mutuals who are finding life in the big city difficult.

Already fans and critics are barking about the inclusion of the famous Brooklyn Atlantics baseball club to try and save the areas reputation.

Here Comes Chicago!

Just when it appeared the world was alight by the Fort Wayne club the big brother in the National League has flexed its muscle and won six games in a row. The Whites one game better then Fort Wayne and have found their groove two months into the season. Count Sensenderfer has been all the craze hitting .378 at the top of the lineup while Mike McGeary and young Cap Anson have combined for 16 RBI.

A big change for the Whites came when manager Chad Collins benched starting pitcher Bill Stearns after only two starts and leaned on 29 year old Rynie Wolters the rest of the way. Wolters has proved steady in his role and Chicago really feels like they can rise all the way to the pennant.

In their own right, Fort Wayne has scored 111 runs thus far this season and Al Pratt continues to impress with 15 RBI.
Tom Carey of the Philadelphia Athletics showed off the first ever walk off hit that brought the Athletics a win over the Forest Citys. The A’s scored twice in the ninth inning to revive talk of a possible pennant run this summer.

TheCleveland Forest Citys have every intention in playing late into the year forthe right to win the first pennant of the American League. After seven gamesthe Midwest team has won 7 games The new darling of this club has become thirdbseman Fred Waterman. Waterman has 25 hits and 17 RBI in the middle of theorder and recently was the second man to go 5-6 in a recent win againstRockford.

JoeStart of Boston in thus far leading the league in hitting going for a 19/37clip getting on base .526

Young Anson Shines

Chicago spent the last week getting a couple of wins and a notable accomplishments washad by their young star Cap Anson. Anson at only 19 years old is batting .410for the young season and went 5-5 in a recent win against Rockford. It was thefirst perfect day for someone who had five hits as Anson did not make a out theentire afternoon. Chicago has taken over first place after Fort Wayne losttheir last two ballgames.

Cleveland 25 Runs In 9 Frames

FORT WAYNE SCORES 34 RUNS!

Fort Wayne destroys Washington scoring 34 runs! No doubt a record was had in FortWayneas the leading team in the National League scored 34 runs and shut outWashington in the most dominant performance of the season. Four players scoredfive runs including Pratt who has been almost as good at the plate as he hasbeen on the mound this season. Fort Wayne has slowly become the story of theseason half way through 1871.

July 17, 1871
The league was hoping for a good pennant race and it has exactly that in theAmerican League as all four of the teams are separated by less then 4 games. Clevelandhas the slightest of leads now up only half a game over a recently resurgentBoston club with Washington staying strong as well only one and a half gamesout. It should be a great finish to the end with no clear favorite at thispoint in time.

July 24, 1871
Having lost two more games this week. New York continues to falter and feel the ire oftheir local fans as the team has never won the hearts of the big city. New Yorkseems to have lost most of its motivation having lost now 7 games in a row.Player manager Dick MCbride is getting little support from team owner DonaldTrump and even as McBride struggles as the team pitcher he is providing littlesolution to the teams slide. Just how ugly will things get for this club andwill they ultimately survive?

FIRST PENNANT RACES EXCITE

Two ties along both leagues as the pennant for the first baseball season has becomemore then anyone could have imagined. The leagues have taken to a lighterschedule in August as the summer heat surely have something to do with that, asdoes the upcoming harvest for many. While two big playing cities like Bostonand Cleveland are tied in the American League, the National League is contestedby Fort Wayne and Troy, with big cities like New York and Chicago lagging behind.

August 18, 1871

In theonly game of the week, the Boston Red Stockings and Harry Wright went into NewYork and played the lowly Mutuals. In a game to remember, Boston starter BobbyMathews in the heat of the day threw nine flawless innings and led his team toa shutout win 3-0. Only the second man to accomplish such an effort, Mathews struckout two and walked no one. Boston has all intention to claim the pennant thatno other city would celebrate more. Such determined performances are sure to givethem the confidence to do so.

Boston Surge Has New England Dreaming

September 1871

The Boston Red Stockings defeat the Cleveland Forest Cities 9-6 in the final game between the two teams as the season begins to wind down. Boston and Cleveland appear now to be the last two standing as the final games of the season wrap up. John Hatfield drove in three runs and Baby Mathews did it again winning his 12th game of the season. Boston has 9 games remaining while Cleveland has only 6 for the rest of the race.

September 11, 1871

Young Chicago star Cap Anson has hit safely in 22 straight games which is every game the Whites have played this season. An amazing run for Anson who has no intention to stop and has silenced critics who thought he was too young to carry the star status that he was given in being the clubs first player defated at 19 years old. Chicago on the other hand needs to get hot as they are only 11-11 so far but have 10 games remaining well into October.

EXCITING FIRST SEASON COMES TO CLIMAX

October 1871

Autumn has come and the pennant chase has reached its climax. In the National League the Troy Haymakers are finished for the regular season having won 21 games. The Fort Wayne Keriogas have three games remaining and must win all three to make it to a tie for the pennant.
In the American League the things are even more tight. The Cleveland Forest Cityes trail the Boston Red Stockings by a single game and each club have three more to play including an October 3rd game in Cleveland againt Boston that will likely determine the pennant.

October 3, 1871

Boston and Cleveland duked it out at National Association Grounds and the Red Stockings came out victorious.

Red Stockings center fielder Fred Treacey put his stamp on his team's 8-6 win over the Cleveland Forest Citys. Treacey was 2 for 5 with a triple, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for Boston in the contest. Bobby Mathews got the win, improving to 17-8. He worked 9 innings, giving up 6 runs on 14 hits, while striking out 0 and walking 0.

Treacey had a big at-bat with runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the fifth inning, when he hit a 2-run triple. The Red Stockings went on to win.

"You know, at the end of the day, it's about who scores the most runs," said Boston manager Harry Wright.

Boston is now riding a 4-game win streak.

October 6, 1871

RED STOCKINGS WIN AL PENNANT

Celebrations in Boston as the Red Stocking win the first ever American League pennant by defeating the Chicago White Stockings and doing enough to outlast the Cleveland Forest Citys after a season long pennant chase. Harry Wright can be proud of his boys that focused themselves and put together a fine season. Three players had over 30 RBI and Bobby Mathews put all the doubters aside and won 18 games leading this team to glory.

October 9, 1871

TROY WALKS AWAY WITH PENNANT

Well wishers to Cleveland as the American League club defeated the Fort Wayne team and the victory gave the pennant to the idle Troy Haymakers. The Haymaskers surprise so many as the best club in the National League winning 9 of 10 games to end the season. Asa Brainard won 21 games and is a true star of the word as player manager Lip Pike wouldn’t let his team stop believing and hit .385 himself in leading this dream finish for this small Michigan city.

Barnes 71 hits and a .516 OBP that also lead the league. Barnes was handed a vintage pocket watch to his collection with a league engravement for his accomplishments from the league.

“I definitely never expected to hit .477” said Barnes. His club did fall one game short of the pennant.

BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

BOSTON RED STOCKINGS VS TROY HAYMAKERS

Game 1
Bass Hits First Home Run As Boston Take Game 1. Bass went deep in the 9th inning but it was not enough as his team lost the opening game at home to Boston. It was a high scoring affair and in the end 23 hits from Boston were enough for the crucial road win.

Game 2

Boston wins its second game on the road with 20 hits and 15 runs to pull themselves up by two games before heading home. The Red Stockings scored 8 runs in the final two innings to turn around what was a close game. The Boston offense has been scorching to start the series and the American League can be proud of their performance thus far.

Game 3

Jim Foran drove in four runs and Boston scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th to once again defeat the Troy Haymakers 12-8 and take a commanding 3 games to none lead in the World Series. Ezra Sutton had three RBI for the losing side as they gave it their all but could not overcome. Asa Brainard lost his second game of the three and has an ERA of 9.33 in what has been a very high scoring series. Bostonin full control.

Game 4

An incredible game four in Boston and in the end the Red Stockings walk off with the sweep and the championship. Down 6-5 in the 9th inning, Joe Start singled home the tying run to force extra innings. In the 10th, the Haymakers scored twice and thought they had their first win of the series. Again however the Red Stockings rallied and two errors were the difference. Again Joe Start singled and a misplay by Troy outfielder John Bass allowed the tying and winning runs to cross the plate and end the game.

April 1872

PHILADELPHIA PREDICTED TO TAKE FLAG

The experts have made their picks and as the 1872 season is ready to begin the consensus seems to be that the Philadelphia Athletics lead by Jake Pittman may be the favorites. In the American League the A’s would have to overcome the champion Red Stockings. The addition of Candy Nelson to a line up that has Cal McCvey and George Hall excites fans and George Zettlein who won 14 games last season as the hurler is a strong point.

In the National League it is the former White Stockings who now play in Middletown whom are the favorites. Chicago moved due to the tragic events of the great Fire but the team lead by Cap Anson is always fancied even as they let down last year with an even record of 16-16.

The season schedule has been increased to 60 games per team and two expansion teams have been added, one in Washington and one in Brooklyn. Also a few teams have relocated, none more anticipated then the Brooklyn Atlantics who bring their reputation of winning to the league with great fanfare.

Let the games and first pitch commence!

The 1872 amatuer draft took place and here were the picks for the respective clubs:

Round 1

Round 1, Pick 1 - Brooklyn Eckfords: SP Jim Britt, age 15
Round 1, Pick 2 - Washington Nationals: SP Cy Bentley, age 21
Round 1, Pick 3 - New York Mutuals: 1B Jim H O'Rourke, age 21
Round 1, Pick 4 - Baltimore Canaries: C John Clapp, age 20
Round 1, Pick 5 - Washington Olympics: LF Paul Hines, age 16
Round 1, Pick 6 - Middletown Mansfields: RP Frank Buttery, age 20
Round 1, Pick 7 - Philadelphia Athletics: 2B Candy Nelson, age 22
Round 1, Pick 8 - Cleveland Forest Citys: SS Jim Holdsworth, age 21
Round 1, Pick 9 - Brooklyn Atlantics: C Nat Hicks, age 26
Round 1, Pick 10 - Troy Haymakers: C Tom Barlow, age 19
Round 1, Pick 11 - Boston Red Stockings: 2B Jack Burdock, age 19

Fifteen year old Jim Britt was the first overall pick at only 15 years old by the new Brooklyn Eckfords.

The league has also expanded to include two new clubs, the Brooklyn Eckfords and the Washington Nationals.

The Baltimore Canaries, Middletown Mansfields, and the famous Brooklyn Atlantics have also relocated and come into the ever evolving league.

SELLMAN HITS FOR CYCLE

Frank Sellman only hit .208 last season but has come out of the gate this season a different man and is making a name for himself in the new year. Even as hi club has only one once, Sellman became the first player in history to hit for what it known as the cycle. Sellman went 5-6 in the game with 4 RBI. Sellman of course even went deep in this game as home runs have become more a rarity.

Still the accomplishment is something special in itself as new territory in the game has been reached. Sellman is hitting .320 this season in five games.

Hicks Smashes 6 Hits

Nat Hicks is leading the newly formed Brooklyn Atlantics who’s anticipation has been a long time coming. Hicks set a National League record with 6 hits in one game against the Cleveland team in a game that saw the Atlantics xcore 19 runs in a win. Brooklyn however is 3-4 on the young season cooling some optimistic predictions of a pennant.

In the American League as predicted the Philadelphia club has won five game in the early part of the season with Cal McVey hitting .457 and young Candy Nelson already with 11 RBI.

Young Has Olympics On Track

The Washington Olympics have come out as the early pace setters in the American League. Winning 8 of 10 games Nick Young has liked how his club has responded after a subpar 1871. Al Splading is now coming into his own as the ace of the staff going 5-1 with a 2.89 ERA and even going 5-5 at the plate in a recent win. Another emerging star is second baseman Tom Carey who has driven in 15 runs and hit .383. Carey is teaming up with fan favorite Davy Force on the infield leading the Washington clubhouse and attack. In the meantime the world champion Boston club has started a disappointing 3-6 on the young season.

Champions Finding Going Treacherous
The defending league champions are finding lifemuch more difficult one year after they were the darlings of the land. TheBoston Red Stockings have started the season 4-9 having lost their last two andfading. Harry Wright has tried to assure everyone that they also started slow ayear ago before winning but as the summer months approach good baseball doesn’tseem to be coming with it.

Rookie outfielder Oscar Bielaski has been anice addition leading the club with 11 RBI from the bottom of the lineup. Theissue is team defense and the up and down play of pitcher Bobby Mathews whoseems to be frustrated at his lack of support and even as his numbers aresimilar last season doesn’t seem to have the same fire. Maybe when you win itonce, it takes something away. Players like George Wright have been quiet with9 runs driven in in 13 games while Joe Start is hitting only .276.

Britt Finds First Season Challenging

Tough times for the kid. Sixteen year old JimBritt was at the top of the woeld when he was selected with the first pick inthe land this offseason by the new Brooklyn Eckfords. Hope turned into contritionhowever as the young arm has lost nine games and the Ekfords as a whole are1-13 in league play.

“Its not easy playing everyday and not winning”said Britt as the club has now conceded second fiddle to the much more acceptedand popular Atlantics in town. With the prospects of a very long summer and thelikely hood the club will break new ground in losing under manager Tim German,Britt finds a way to stay positive, “I just play because its all I know how todo, and I surely love the game”.

Thirty Four and Counting!

Cal McVey just will not slow down. In an unbelievable streak the Philadelphia Athletic catcher has managed to hit safely in 34 straight games. Many were impressed when Cap Anson took a streak to 24 games last season but what McVey is doing this season is something else all together. The 22 year old is hitting .422 to pace the American League and is now a career .402 hitter overall. The Ahtletics have won 25 games so far this season and are true contenders for the pennant, but the talk of the town remains the Colorado native.
Cal McVey has hit in 34 Straight games and counting!

Bass Sets Power Pace
John Bass has been the standard of the famoushome run early in the history of this new league. Bass hit three home runs lastseason and this year is doing even better. Bass has already hit 4 home runs forTroy in 1872 and has surpassed his total of last season. Dare to say somepeople are even imagining the slugger had 10 in him? Bass has also added 5doubles and four triples so far this season leading slugging percentage thisyear, same as he did last season.

Up For Grabs!
The pennant races truly have heated up thisseason with no less then 8 different teams within 2 games of the flag. Theextended season should really make the remainder of the summer and into autumnsomething to behold as the league has not seen before.

Troy. Pike, Look For Redemption

The Troy Haymakers still have the taste oflosing the championship last season and seem keen to right the loss. ManagerLip Pike has his team believing in themselves and lead the standings going intoAugust by 2.5 games over Baltimore. Asa Brainard has the lowest ERA in theleague and is looking to fly past his 21 game win total from last season; fcourse he was voted the pitcher of the year last season and was voted pitcherof the month of July.

HIGHAM STILL BELIEVES

A new club in Baltimore is trying to get its region together to rally the team in the final two months of the season as they currently sit 4 games back of the first place Troy club. A major force in the Baltimore push is that of an Englishman. Dick Higham is only 21 years old and was born in Ipwisch who has become the focal point as catcher for the team and manager Scott Hastings. Higham has the lead in the game right now with 49 runs driven in and a sparkling .402 average. In a way the youngster came out of nowhere as last season he drove in only 18 all year with a .293 average.
“We need to believe that we are good enough to catch Troy” said the star who has been a vocal encouragement for his mates. “The team with the best mentality will win.”
Levi Meyerle of course is the grand star of the club currently leading the game with a .434 avergae for the Canaries.

Spalding At Another Level
The race in the American League this sason has been a hot one with the defending champion Red Stockings fading away. The team that has taken the initiative as we enter into September has been the Washington Olympics. The Olympics ripped off a 10 game winning streak and now hold a 1 game lead over the Philadelphia Athletics.
Al Spalding, the Washington ace, has been pitching with purpose all season as his current 19-4 record would indicate. It is appropriate that Spalding would be throwing in the Nations Capital as the young man is so influential that some are saying he should run for office. For now however he is leading this team to the reality of a pennant. Spalding has a 2.58 ERA and has improved his numbers across the board. He was 13-18 last season.

McVey Streak Reaches 40!
Cal McVey has no intention of slowing down. The star catcher has hit in 41 games straight now and counting, going all the way back to April to when he wasn’t able to get a knock. McVey has a .411 record and has every intention to get the number and streak as high as possible to help his team.
The Athletics are currently 31-11 and one game behind Washington in the American League.

My man Sellman hittin for the cycle. It's what I like about the OOTP universe. Any player can surprise you and get his 15 minutes of fame. Looked up his real numbers, and in five seasons, played in a total of 37 games with a .257 average.

Enjoying the dynasty. I'll be following!

Yes i completely agree. OOTP always surprises me with what it will come up with next. I am also fixated on Cal McVey's 41 game hitting streak.

Thanks!

September 1872

Washington Pulling Away

Rumor has it that even President Ulysses Grant has taken notice at how well the local team is playing as the 1872 season comes to a climax. Grant in the White House is only a few miles away from where the Olympics are leading the American League now by four full games and truly feel the pennant is their's to lose.

Having won three in a row to end the month while rival Philadelphia lost three straight has given some space to the leaders. Nick Young's club has lost only nine times all season and is 16-5 at home. Other then Al Spalding who is 22-6 other names to remember include Steve King who hit .375 thus far with 47 RBI and Wee Davy Force who has become the onfield leader of the team taking no nonsense up the middle in his game.

Nothing has been won yet, but the Olympics are feeling pennant fever and hope the run in these final weeks will lead them to more big headlines and Presidential observations.

'He Can Not Be Stopped'
It is what everyone is saying at this point, Cal McVey simply can not be stopped. The Philadelphia catcher continues to defy the odds and opposing pitchers hitting in 46 straight contests. Keep in mind, McVey have only played in 47 games all season, so since a hitless opening day, he has a hit in every game as we approach October.

Can he make it to 50? There is little doubt by most that he can not. His approach at the plate create line drives off the bat and most games he is easily getting multiple hits. On the other hand, McVey is quite a ways off from taking home the batting title as Levi Meyerle is hitting an eye opening .443 going into the final month, 20 points clear of anyone on his tail.

For good reason no one seems to care about Meyerle's impressive 36 game hitting streak.
