Competitive balance discussion

So some can buy PP while on Steam. I don't have that ability yet but I am in first place in my league (Espanola Eagles) but not for long.

This New York team is just buying the best players. I think my fun is about to end... LOL

I have seen such stacked teams before PP were available for purchase. So, you do not know if this team was stacked with $$. And if it was, you now have a good challenge. Should be fun!

Well I do know since they were inserted in his team after the update.

We'll see what happens. My team Espanola Eagles at the allstar break:

I racked up almost 6000 points before I overhauled my whole team. I was struggling to get above .400 winning pct., now I've won 15 of my last 20 and am climbing the ranks. I landed some really good cards, but I've yet to spend a dime...it's all luck of the draw. Someone said it best the other day...the real fun is going to come a couple of months down the road when we all have really good teams and the difference is going to be who can strategize and exploit their talent the best

Alright, how in the hell is 2000 Pedro not a perfect 100 card? I think that season defines what 100 cards should be. I now question the legitimacy of most other perfect cards.

Because WAR is a useless stat. Glad that OOTP finally acknowledges this.

I don't care about WAR. What stats do you like that Pedro didn't completely dominate the entire league that year in? Pitcher wins?

That player just took all of the fun out of the mode. Not for others. For them self.

What upgrades are there to work towards? What team building needs to be done?

One common view is that the more money someone spends on this sort of games, the more he feels himself in need of a penis extension.

Nonsense. They still have lots of silver and gold players to upgrade to diamond and perfect.

I'm in this league too (Falkland Islanders), and I just beat the Highlanders in the first game of a 3-game series. Winning against them is extra-rewarding now

With a reserve roster like that, he ain't getting pp from playing the market.

But it looks like he's picked up guys based mainly on OVR, and that's not a true indicator of how good a player is.

My best performer is Jose Oquendo, rated 76 or something, and he's clearly better than both of the second basemen listed on there. I don't think Enos Slaughter would even start for most teams - that's average hitting at best and if he's like most older players his defense is going to be awful.

That looks like a team with a strong rotation, OK offense and bad defense based on what I'm seeing. Its not unbeatable.

But outside of that, if the guy bought a ton of pp then good on him. It's how he wants to play, he's not breaking any rules, and he's supporting future development. He's probably busy performing heart surgery all day and just doesn't have time to work the market like we do.

I have a guy in my Entry League whose worst player is gold, and then he has another 10 gold players on the reserve roster.

Hope I don't get matched up against him as I lead the league at 15-4.

I think this situation will probably resolve itself. What you're calling "what buying points looks like" is also what teams in general will look like after a few weeks. You're comparing this team to teams that have literally just started out, because that's all you have to compare them to.

For my part, I decided to spend $25 on points. I have no plans to spend more... I basically decided to treat it as a second one-time game purchase. I was somewhat lucky on draws, but this was more than enough to build a team composed mostly of 75+ rating players, with a few extras left over. (As mentioned above, there are plenty of situations where OVR doesn't represent expected results, let alone fitness for a role.)

But compare purchased PP to the PP you get just having a team and completing achievements. For example, I've received 3105 PP from in-game achievements between June 21 and August 1 of this current season. That number may be a little inflated by three All-Star selections (100*3), and by the fact that I scored a no-hitter (1000) and a grand slam (500). (The no-hitter was pitched by Rich Hill, who has a 74 rating and has been on my roster the whole season -- so that's not a function of paying for anything either. Just one-time luck.)

But an average team seems likely to get something like 1000 PP per day. (Maybe a little more, but let's say 1000.) Over the course of a month, that works out to about 30,000 PP... and that's not counting any free packs from Challenge Mode achievements, any other bonuses or giveaways that may happen in the future, or any profit from selling players.

So right now, the difference between spending $25 and spending $0 is pretty substantial, but once a few weeks have passed and everyone has accumulated enough PP, it'll be more of a marginal gap.

Now, if someone was going to spend $25 every week, that would be a little different... but those people will be very few, I imagine. I'm not sure there's the incentive to keep spending once your roster is filled to your satisfaction. At some point, you have your guys and you want to win with them, rather than continuing the turnover. (And if you do want to upgrade, it'll be possible to do so by selling a player and buying a new one with PP, rather than paying cash.)

(Note, of course, that all this applies to the post-beta release.)

that looks kinda like my team but I haven't bought any points. I've had luck with pulls and it has made me think that the pack odds are high right now during the beta. I have not bought any PP and only used earned PP to buy packs. I've got 2 diamonds, 6 golds, 10 silvers
