Walkers news: Oct. 2 -- Kansas City 2, St. Louis 0
Record: 92-68- 1st, NL South clinched; 1 GA Madison for best NL record
Josh Shuler provided the game's only runs with a homer in the top of the first inning and Kyle Wright along with a trio of relievers combined on a two-hit shutout as Kansas City won 2-0 over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997). River Walkers starting pitcher Steven Brault allowed a single to Greg Jones to open the game, two batters later Shuler cranked out his 31st home run of the season to put the Pit Masters in front. Wright, meanwhile, took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a one-out single to pinch-hitter JT Schwartz. He retired the next two hitters to get out of the inning. Wright (10-12) exited after that, having allowed just the one hit. He struck out two and walked one. David Berg, Mike Tucker and Wade Davis all provided a scoreless inning of relief. The Walkers only other hit came in the eighth on a double by Edmond Americaan. St. Louis would eventually load the bases with two outs, but Berg struck out Rhys Hoskins to end the inning. Davis earned his 28th save with a 1-2-3 ninth. |

Walkers news: Oct. 3 -- Kansas City 6, St. Louis 0
Record: 92-69, 1st, NL South clinched; Tied with Madison for best NL record
Juan Sandoval handled the first 4.2 innings and a trio of reliever did the rest as Kansas City shutout St. Louis for the second consecutive game 6-0 at Busch Stadium (1997). The loss was the fourth in a row for the River Walkers, and the third time they have been shutout. Sandoval worked the first 4.2 innings, scattering five hits. Noah Murdock got the final out of the fifth inning. The sixth and seventh belonged to Kyle Nelson (8-6), who earned the win. Archie Bradley took care of the eighth and ninth. The Pit Masters took control with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning against St. Louis rookie starter Jason Froelich. Sandoval started it with a two-out double, and he scored when Greg Jones followed with a single. A walk to Danny Cushing moved Jones to second. Josh Shuler scored Jones with a single. Shuler had the big blow in a three-run fifth, with a two-run homer off Froelich. Nander De Sedas had opened the inning with a walk and scored on a Cushing sacrifice fly. Shuler followed with his long ball. An RBI single from Kylon Tye off reliever Luis Palomo in the seventh made it 6-0. |

Walkers news: Oct. 4 -- St. Louis 6, Kansas City 5, 11 innings
Record: 93-69, 1st, 4 GA Des Moines NL South champs; Tied Madison for best record in NL; Tied Toledo for best record in MBL
Pinch-hitter Larry Ernesto singled off Kansas City closer Wade Davis with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to score JT Schwartz and give St. Louis a 6-5 win in the regular-season finale at Busch Stadium (1997). Schwartz had tripled with one out but Davis got the next batter, Edmond Americaan, to hit a grounder back to him for the second out. However, Ernesto grounded a single between shortstop and third to send Schwartz across the plate. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for St. Louis, and at 93-69 tied the National League South Division champion with Madison for the best record in the National League. The best record in the American League belonged to American League East champ Toledo, also at 93-69. It is uncertain who will have home-field advantage in the NLCS. The River Walkers carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth, only to have the Pit Masters tie it when pinch-hitter Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer off closer Edwin Diaz. Manny Machado, who had drawn a walk in front of McMahon, also scored. It marked the third blown save of the season for Diaz. St. Louis had gone up 3-2 in the fifth inning when Schwartz had led off with a single. He was eliminated at second when Edmond Americaan failed to get down a bunt. A successful bunt from Jimmy Lambert did get Americaan to second. Americaan moved to third when Bo Bichette reached on an error. He scored on a Carlos Vidal single. The Walkers lead reached 5-3 in the sixth. Andrew Benintendi drew a lead-off walk from Kyle Nelson and moved to third on a Clay Owens two-out double. Schwartz scored Benintendi with a single. Americaan chased home Owens with a fielder's choice. Owens, a rookie, had hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second to make it 2-2. Lambert worked the first six innings for St. Louis, allowing three runs on six hits. Angel Tiburcio got the first out of the seventh. Jake Brentz came on to finish out the seventh and struck out the side in the eighth. After Diaz had his bad ninth, Williams Jerez got the first two outs of the 10th. John Curtiss (4-3) recorded the final four Pit Masters out and earned the win. |

NLCS Game 1 -- Madison 7, St. Louis 5
NLCS Game 1 -- at St. Louis
Madison 7, St. Louis, Muskies lead series 1-0. Perhaps the strength of the St. Louis River Walkers much of the season, a bullpen meltdown cost them severely as it yielded seven runs in the top of the eighth inning of a 7-5 game 1 loss to Madison at Busch Stadium (1997). Walkers ace Alex Faedo cruised through the first seven innings, allowing nary a run and just five hits while striking out 15 as St. Louis built a 3-0 lead. With right-handed hitter Joe Gray Jr. scheduled to lead-off the inning, Faedo came out to face him and allowed a single. Williams Jerez then came on to face lefty MJ Melendez. Jerez did his job with a strikeout. John Curtiss took over and allowed a single to pinch-hitter Jordon Myrow. It was then Nick Lodolo's turn, as he was to face left-handed hitting Taylor Trammell. Trammell walked to load the bases. Another pitching change brought in Luis Palomo to face the right-handed hitting Nick Senzel. Senzel singled, scoring Gray Jr., and keeping the bases loaded. St. Louis then decided to go to one of its two hammers, lefty Jake Brentz, who posted a 3-0 record with 11 saves and a 1.15 ERA during the regular season. And boy did he SUCK. Nomar Mazara singled to tie the game. Brentz then walked Kevin Maitan to reload the bases. He followed that with a second straight walk, this one to Francisco Lindor, to put the Muskies in front 4-3. And to compound things, he also walked Aramis Ademan. Suddenly it was 5-3 and Brentz was done without having recorded an out. Angel Tiburcio got the call, and he responded by issuing the fourth walk of the inning, this one to Gray Jr. Tiburcio did manage to retire the next batter, but M.J. Melendez hit the ball far enough into the outfield to score a run and make it 7-3. The Walkers did get a two-run home run from Jared Thomas in the bottom of the ninth to pull within 7-5. Thomas' first homer, in the second inning, off Madison starter Brian Rose in the second inning had given the Walkers a 1-0 lead. St. Louis also scored single runs in the third (RBI double from Larry Ernesto) and fourth (Vidal Brujan with a run-scoring single). Rose worked the first four innings for Madison, allowing three runs on nine hits. Justin Burris worked a scoreless fifth. The sixth and seventh belonged to Danny Munos (1-0), who came out of the game with the win. Jorge Gusman pitched a silent eighth and got the first out of the ninth. Mauricio Cabrera allowed Thomas' second homer, the only batter he would face. Ethan Hankins whiffed the only two batters who stood in against him to end it. |
