We are in Tinseltown to play the Hollywood Stars a 2 game set. They lost 2 of 3 here to San Francisco over the weekend. We are in Kansas City to play the Royals a 4 game series through the weekend. They just beat the Astros in a pair of games here. We lost 3 of 4 to them in Portland, April 8-11. They are 6th in scoring in the PCL with 4.32 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.38). The Royals lead with PCL in fewest runs allowed with 3.05 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.10). Their team ERA is 2.71. Their Bullpen ERA is a league best 2.09. Our Bullpen has been a bit better of late and its ERA is down to 3.81, but still worse than the league average of 3.41. The Royals run differential is +142, the 2nd best in Baseball. The best is, believe or not, the Minnesota Twins at +143, who are 12 games behind the Royals in the standings. Ours is +32.

Portland Beavers (55-58 .487 23.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Kansas City Royals (76-36 .679 in 1st place in the PCL East)

POR: Steve Muir (27-R 11-7 2.79) Gold Glove vs. KC: Al Johnson (22-R 20-3 1.77) Cy Young/RoY/2-time All-Star

Muir is 4-0 in his last 5 starts and allowed only 9 hits in his last two combined, both complete games. We have officially listed him as our #1 starter over Bobby Johnson.

Oh, how I wish had noticed that Al Johnson was 7' tall back at the B Leagues draft of 2001... I would have surely traded for him instead of Bobby Johnson. We have not faced him this year, but we were 1-1 against him last season. We beat him in his 2nd Major League start, but he shut us out the 2nd time on 4 hits.

Portland Beavers (57-59 .491 24.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Kansas City Royals (77-38 .670 in 1st place in the PCL East)

POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 3-5 3.21) vs. KC: Graham Pethel (25-R 11-12 3.09)

We faced Pethel in April and scored 4 runs (3 earned) in 7.1 IP in a no decision. He struck out 10. He currently leads the PCL in strikeouts. The only reason for Pethel's poor record is that the Royals have averaged 3.04 runs per game that he has started.

Also unbelievable, against this bum... Fernando Mexicano smashes one hard on the ground to 1st, but Frankie Clontz snares it steps on the bag... Phooey...

Bottom of the Fourth:

Fernando Martinez leads off with a double to center! Our second hit off this bum... Unfortunately, Martinez thinks it should be a triple and he gets thrown out... Rick Mansoor grounds a hit to center and Snowden goes to 3rd. Mansoor is hitting better than Jim Shippy, who is hitting fine! Neither one of them ever hit a lick before this season. Fernando Martinez swings at the first pitch and flies out to center and Snowden tags up and beats the throw to the plate! 4 to 2, Beavers! Dave Risinger swings at a 3-2 pitch and beats out an infield hit. Juan Rojas swings at the first pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and Mansoor goes to 3rd. The Sacramento Solons are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 in Houston. We are 6-3 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time they visited us, July 2-3. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.68 runs per game (Portland is down to 6th with 4.30). The Solons are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.14 per game (Portland is 6th with 4.05). Their run differential is -56 and ours is +30. The Solons were 1 of 2 teams in the PCL (Denver) who did not have a player make the All-Star team this season. Denver is the only team in Baseball to not have any players chosen in the past two seasons. Sacramento's one All-Star from last season, 2B Jim Holberton, is currently on the DL.

Sacramento Solons (49-71 .408 36 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (59-62 .488 26.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

SAC: Steve Gonzalez (32-R 5-7 3.48) vs. POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 3-5 3.06)

We traded Gonzalez to the Solons for RP Bobby Weatherford, who stunk it up for us and is now pitching in A Ball for the Angels. He is 0-1 against us in 2 starts this year, but had Quality Starts both times.

Moe has gone at least 7 innings in 3 straight starts, but was only 1-0. He only gave up 5 hit and 1 run in 7 IP last time out at Kansas City, but had a no decision.

Sacramento Solons (49-72 .405 36 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (60-62 .492 25.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

SAC: Jerry London (36-R 3-11 4.69) vs. POR: Duke McKenzie (24-R 2-4 4.89) Rookie

London has 3 straight no decisions where he allowed 2 or fewer runs. We faced him last year and beat him, but only scored 1 run in 7 IP.

McKenzie has allowed 9 runs and 15 hits in his last two starts (8 IP). He only lost one of the games, though. Another bad outing today and we will evaluate our options... Especially against the weak hitting lineup the Solons are running out there today.

New Pitcher: Tom Butterworth (26-R), making his Major League debut. His wife is Mrs. Butterworth! She makes the BEST pancakes! Jack Hinckley flies out to right and both runners advance. 6 to 2, Beavers! Fernando Martinez grounds out to the pitcher.... What a waste of a trade that was to get him....

Bottom of the Eighth:
P Tom Butterworth retired the first 6 batters he faced in a year, but then Juan Rojas drew a walk, Glenn Snowden lined a hit to center and Brian Mitchell took a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 1 out. Jack Hinckley swings at the first pitch and hits a towering fly to right that maybe, could be, caught on the warning track... Rojas trots home and Snowden moves to 3rd. 7 to 2, Beavers. Weather: 64 F, Clear Skies, with a 12 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 33,102

Top of the First:
Brian Mitchell walks on 4 pitches! Jack Hinckley lines a hit to left. Fernando Martinez grounds into a 4-6-3 double play and Mitchell goes to 3rd... With 1 out, Juan Rojas grounds a hit to right and Shippy heads home....safe! 6 to 4, Beavers! P David Fuentes, who came in last inning, is allowed to hit, because we don't trust anyone left in the Bullpen. Not that we trust Fuentes either, but he has been good of late. Since he returned from his latest trip to Vancouver (A), he has thrown 18 scoreless innings. And now I have jinxed him... He swings away and pops out to center. Brian Mitchell flies out to right.

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: David Fuentes (25-R), beginning his second inning of work after getting 2 outs in the 8th on 7 pitches. 8-9-1 up for the Seals. Howie Anspaugh lines an 0-2 pitch to center for a hit... Yep, I jinxed him... 1B Antonio Vigil (35-R), batting .280 with 4 HR in 75 AB, is up. P Fuentes fires over to 1st to pick off Anspaugh, but throws the ball away for an error... If that is not evidence of a jinx, I don't know what is... Vigil takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and the winning run comes to the plate... Bill Webber lines out to 1st and Glenn Snowden fires to 2nd to double off Anspaugh! Now, THAT looked like our old Gold Glover!
