Montreal Canadiens (9-7-1) at Boston Bruins (10-5-1)

The Habs don't get much of a chance to lick their wounds and get back at her when they face the Bruins at TD Garden Arena. The last time we faced the Bruins we lost 1-0 on a goal that was scored 82 seconds into the game. Montreal only mustered 12 shots that night. I was waiting for a reason to put Al Ladd back on the 1st line and last nights blow out is reason enough.

Boston is led by LD Tom Grimes. The 29 year old has 2 goals and 9 points in primarily a defensive role. In his 3rd season with Boston, the 1982 Hart Trophy Winner and 2 time All-Star has 22 goals and 100 points in 180 career NHL games.

At RD the Bruins rely on 32 year old Gerald Rowe. Rowe has 4 goals and 12 points with a +8 in 16 games this year. The 1982 Conn Smythe Winner also won the Norris last season has played all of his 180 NHL career games in the Bruins uniform collecting 30 goals and 122 points with 197 PIMs and a +61 rating in mostly a defensive role.

RW Mike McDaniel is suffering from a minor finger injury, but so far this season he has 7 goals and 13 points in 16 games. This 33 year old plays a balanced offense and defensive game with some brutal physicality. McDaniel has played his whole career in Boston and has played in 180 games having 63 goals and 152 points and 530 PIMs. He amassed 284 PIMs in the 80-81 season and was named an All-Star probably more for his 68 points.

Montreal will send Mike Blackshear to start. He has started 14 games and carries a .884 save %. Boston will start Jerry Welch, in 10 starts he has a .911 save %.

Montreal 3
Boston 1

Montreal opens the scoring at 3:39 when Matthew Amadio gets his 1st of the season. The shots are 10 to 0 Montreal. Boston gets their 1st shot on goal nearly 9 minutes into the game. The period ends 1-0 and Montreal out shoots Boston 16 to 6.

The Habs go ahead 2-0 at 10:41 of the 2nd, Lorenzo Bocci gets his 13th. Again Montreal dominates with the Bruins only getting 1 shot on goal so far this period. Montreal ends the period out shooting Boston 11 to 4 and 27 to 10 in the game so far. Unlike the Panther game, Montreal has not been short-handed yet.

Montreal goes up 3-0 at 2:35 of the 3rd when Lorenzo Bocci gets his 14th of the year. The Bruins break up the shut out at 12:50 of the period when Andrew Carylyon gets his 7th of the year. Matthew Amadio takes a high-sticking minor at 14:04 to put Boston on the PP. Montreal is able to kill it. Montreal goes out and beats the Bruins in their own barn.

Montreal RD Martin Sulc is the games 1st star with 2 assists and a +3 in 18:33 of ice time. The 28 year old Sulc now has 2 goals and 8 points in 18 games with a +11 rating. Sulc missed most of the 80-81 season due to a infection, but in 105 career NHL games he has 12 goals and 39 points in mostly a defensive role on the 2nd defense pairing.

Montreal hosts the Capitals with a chance to be tied for 1st in the Atlantic tonight. Montreal has been solid at the Bell Center (8-1-1) this season while the Capitals (4-4-0) have been Ok on the road. LW Lorenzo Bocci has been a bright spot for Montreal and is currently tied for the lead in the NHL with 14 goals. He will Hughes and Ladd will remain on the 1st line together tonight.

Assistant captain, C Xavier Morissette is probably going to be a star in this league. The 19 year old has 1 goal and only 4 points so far this year in 15 games and has been limited to under 15 minutes a game while he develops. Last season was his NHL rookie season, he had 11 goals and 32 points in 82 games with a -8 rating. The Capitals drafted him 9th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

RD Marshall Lawson is in his final year of his $4.3 M per year deal. The 33 year old Lawson has 3 goals and 11 points in 15 games this year. Originally Lawson started his career in the 80-81 season as a Flyer, he was traded in January of 1982. In 143 career NHL games he has 17 goals, 64 points with 52 PIMs.

Washington 6 Montreal 4

Montreal got into penalty trouble early in the 1st but survived it. But it was the Capitals that got the first goal at 10:02 of the 1st. Alejandro Villalobos gets his 5th of the season on the PP. Washington gets its 2nd PP marker at 15:32 when LD Martin Hampl gets his 1st of the year. Washington out shoots Montreal 19 to 11 in the 1st, they were 2 for 6 on the PP while Montreal was 0 for 1.

Washington continues to control the game and gets a 3-0 lead on LW Donald Miles 7th of the season at 1:16. Montreal finally gets on the board shortly after, RD Marek Bartolcic gets his 2nd of the season at 2:10. Washington gets a 3rd PP goal when RW Brian McLane gets his 6th at 3:20, Capitals up 4-1. The goals just keep a coming, C Dave Wright gets his 5th of the season at 6:14 of the 2nd. Montreal makes it 4-3 moments later when LD Yegor Berestnev gets his 2nd of the season at 8:15. Neither goalie is going to improve their save % tonight. Washington grabs another 2 goal lead and make it 5-3 at 11:46 when RD Keith Sutton gets his 4th. The scoresheet is getting full and the period finally ends. Washington out shoots Montreal 13 to 5 in the period and are now 3 for 10 on the PP, Montreal is still 0 for 1.

Montreal makes it interesting as C Dave Wright gets his 6th at 13:15 of the 3rd and the score is now 5-4. Montreal out shooting the Caps 11 to 6 so far in the 3rd. Washington will go on its 11th PP as LD Marc-Andre Berube gets 2 for tripping at 14:23. Vondracek has 65 goals with 135 points in 184 career NHL games. The 39 year old Heikkinen has been a spare part for the Sabres but has been a star in the league. Nashville Predators (10-4-3) at Montreal Canadiens (10-8-1)

Montreal will be facing a very good Nashville team at the Bell for their first meeting of the year. Montreal has given up 7 and 6 goals in 2 of their last 3 games and are concerned about being ranked 22nd in the NHL for goals against per game. (2.95) On the plus side Montreal is also scoring 2.95 goals per game and are ranked 6th in the league.

Nashville is led by 33 year old RD Paul Gourley. Gourley has 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points along with his 35 PIMs this season in 17 games. An All-Star in 1981, he had 43 points in 78 games that season. He has played in 177 career NHL games and has 22 goals, 90 points and 144 PIMs to his credit.

The Predators have one of the league up-coming Two-way Forwards in 25 year old Jeremy Longboat. Longboat has 9 goals and 23 points in 17 games this season. In 181 career NHL games all with the Predators he has 68 goals and 160 points with 178 PIMs.

RD Juan Estrada is a stable stay at home defenseman for the Predators. The 37 year old has 3 goals and 9 points this season but over the past 3 years, he has 16 goals and 70 points in 157 career NHL games. A fractured arm limited him to just 59 games in the 81-82 season.

Nashville will start Walker Bowman in the net, he has a .925 save % in 11 games this season. Mike Blackshear will start for Montreal, he has a .884 save % in 16 games.

Montreal 6 Nashville 5 (OT)

It was a terrible period for the Canadiens as they were out shot 8 to 2 and both shots were in the final minute of the period. No shots for 19 minutes to start the game. Montreal was also shorthanded 4 times and did not have a PP in the 1st.

Nashville does open the scoring at 2:42 of the 2nd, RD Juan Estrada gets his 4th of the year. The Predators make it 2-0 at 4:33 when RW Lindsay Rice gets his 3rd of the season. Montreal gets one back at 5:43 when C Chris Hughes collects his 13th of the year. But at 7:49 LW Tomas Franc with his 2nd makes it 3-1. 3 goals on 3 shots for Nashville so far in the 2nd. Montreal scores on the PP at 11:43 when LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten gets his 2nd of the year. Montreal ties it on the PP when C Dave Wright gets his 7th of the year at 15:17. The lead is short lived, Predators C Denis Winter gets his 4th at 15:42 to make it 4-3. That goal ends Mike Blackshear's night. Thats how the period ends at Montreal out shoots the Preds 20 to 10 in the 2nd.

Nashville makes it 5-3 just 1:10 into the 3rd when LW Lindsay Rice gets his 4th of the year. The parade to the scoresheet continues as RW Al Ladd gets his 4th of the year at 2:03 of the 3rd. Its now 5-4. Montreal ties it up at 10:40 when RD Yegor Berestnev scores his 3rd of the year on the PP. Montreal gets a chance on the PP with just over a minute left. They are unable to score, but will have 59 seconds remaining in the PP to start the overtime.

Montreal wins it in overtime when LW Melvin Swiney scores his 4th of the year at 0:42 on the PP makes the home fans go home happy.

Montreal's RW Al Ladd was named the 1st star with his 1 goal and 2 assists. The 30 year old Ladd now has 4 goals, 14 assists for 18 points in 20 games. Orginally with the Blackhawks, Montreal acquired Ladd in a trade at the deadline in January of 1982. In 173 career NHL games, Ladd has 60 goals, 109 assists for 169 points with 83 PIMs and a +41 rating.

We are now a quarter way into the season for the year and its time to take a peak at what we have in the system. We will take a look at all our signed and unsigned prospects under the age of 25.

Lets first start in with our AHL team, the St John's IceCaps. (12-4-2)

The IceCaps are off to a great start to the year. They are currently tied for 1st in the North Division with 26 points.

We are looking forward to the day G Richard Day is ready. The 19 year old is in his second season with the organization. This season he has 11-1-2 record with a 2.16 GAA and .925 save % with 1 SO's for St John.s and in 61 career games in the AHL, he has 36 wins a 2.41 GAA and .920 save %. Day was the Habs 1st round, 23rd overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. The plan would be to call him up for some back to back games this season.

LD Martin Beran is in his 1st season in the AHL but has missed a few games due to a lacerated finger. The 19 year old Beran was the 173rd overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by Montreal. A concern I have for Beran is injuries, although the scouts seem to think he should be OK he was limited to just 7 games this season and played only 54 last year in the WHL. So far in 7 games he has a goal and 5 points, but he is expected to be a defensive styled defender. I don't expect to see Beran in a Habs uniform before some time next season.

LD Ashton Miller is considered at Blue Chip Prospect in the scouting world. The 20 year old Miller has played in 13 games so far this season for St John's and had only 12 games last year in the AHL. Montreal picked Miller 83rd overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. He missed most of last season with Acute Elbow Soreness and missed some games this season with a knee injury. In 25 games over the past 2 seasons with St John's, the defensive minded Miller has 3 goals, 14 assists for 17 points with 22 PIMs and +7 rating. Miller may seem some NHL action this season, but he definitely needs some seasoning.

Signed as an undrafted Free agent in July 1981, LD Ron Reimer has 76 AHL and 9 NHL games under his belt. The 20 year old looked effective while getting called up due to injuries last season, in 9 games he had a couple of assists, 12 PIMs and a +2 rating. Another defensive defenseman prospect in the organization, he plays a physical game and has amassed 299 PIMs in 76 AHL games over the past 2 years. I expect Reimer may be considered to be called up soon.

Cambridge Ontario's LD Andrew Rickford is in his 1st season of AHL hockey. After finishing his junior career with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL, he has played 18 games in St John's this season. He has 7 goals and 16 points with 30 PIMs in those games this season. Montreal selected Rickford 107th overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Rickford may get a chance to see NHL action this season, but I am expecting most likely that he will spend the full season in the AHL.

20 year old Jiri Bohm is making a splash in the AHL with the IceCaps so far this season. Bohm in his first season in pro-hockey has 7 goals and 21 points with 84 PIMs in 18 AHL games. Bohm was the 143rd overall pick by Montreal in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. In his last season of junior with the Victoriaville Tigres of the QMJHL he had 91 points and 213 PIMs in 68 games. I expect to see Bohm in an Montreal uniform this season.

Born in Prague, CZE, the 19 year old Petr Svestka has adapted to the North American game rather nicely. Considered to be a Blue-Chip Prospect offensive forward, the 6'0 212 pounder can eat up the minutes with strong stamina. Montreal drafted Svestka 117th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, he finished his junior career with the Gatineau Olympiques in the QMJHL last year with 115 points including 43 goals in 68 games. This season he has 8 goals and 11 points in 18 games with St John's. I do not expect to see Svestka in a Canadiens jersey until next season.

American born Josh Lancaster was signed as a undrafted Free Agent in July 1981. The 20 year old Lancaster played in the WHL in his final season of junior in which he got traded with 20 games in the season. Between the Kootenay Ice and Victoria Royals he has 21 goals and 49 points with 188 PIMs. A strong physcial player, he already has 173 career PIMs in 94 AHL games. He also has 27 goals and 60 points so far in the AHL. I expect that we will see Lancaster in the NHL this season.

We also have some unsigned draftees that I expect to see signing contracts with Montreal over the next 12 months.

Quebec born Joseph Dube patrols the LD of the Erie Otters of the OHL. He currently has 1 goal and 15 points in 16 games with Erie this season. The was drafted in the 1st round, 14th overall by Montreal in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He can rack up the points, the 19 year had 17 goals and 63 assists for 80 points in 66 games for Erie last year. He is a strong skating mobile defenseman.

Montreal drafted Karel Vitek 164th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. The 20 year old is another Prague CZE born player for Montreal. He has been playing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL for the past 2 seasons after finishing in Vancouver with the Giants of the WHL. In 87 career AHL games, Vitek has 6 goals and 23 points with 237 PIMs. A strong playmaker, he can read the play and has some hockey smarts.

18 year old Zbynek Jakes did not get resigned by his junior team, the Drummondville Voltigeurs and will be signed by the Canadiens shortly so he doesn't miss the season with out playing. Jakes was drafted by Montreal in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, 104th overall. Jakes missed much of the 1981-82 season due to a knee injury that limited him to just 18 games, over the past 2 seasons in the QMJHL he played in 70 games, had 13 goals and 48 points with 56 PIMs. Jakes plays a strong physical game. Montreal will offer him a contract.

Revelstoke BC's LW Sam Foote is not playing anywhere this season has he was not resigned by the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. The 19 year old Foote was the Habs 194th overall pick in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. In the past 2 seasons in the QMJHL, he played in 134 games, had 31 goals and 82 points with 282 PIMs. Foote has above average physical strength and has some goal scoring ability. Montreal will offer him a contract.

The parade from Prague CZE to Montreal continues. C Lukas Jan was drafted by the Canadiens 134th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. The 19 year old Jan is in his 3rd season with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL. This season Jan has 7 goals and 16 points with 34 PIMs. In 150 career QMJHL games, he has 39 goals and 96 points with 96 PIMs. Jan's strength is definitely his skating. He has proven to have good stamina and has not missed a game in 2 + seasons.

The Sudbury Wolves did not resign 18 year old Jiri Reichel so he is currently not playing this season. Reichel was a 2nd round, 44th overall pick of the Canadiens in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. Over the past 2 seasons with the Wolves of the OHL, he played in 128 games had 57 goals, 95 assists and 152 points with 138 PIMs. Although Riechel has put up a lot of points in junior, the scouts really like his defensive play and expect him to be very durable as he missed only 6 games over the past 2 years. Montreal will offer him a contract.

Boston Bruins (12-7-2) at Montreal Canadiens (12-8-1)

Montreal just played these guys on October 26th and we were victorious in a 3-1 game. Looks like LD Clint Arrington can play through his hand injury but LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten can not. So for tonight young Jiri Bohm will move up to the 2nd line with Dave Wright and Yevgeny Ronov. LW Tom Gaskell, C Melvin Swiney and RW Ronnie Marvin will again become the 3rd line.

We have talked about Boston a few days ago so lets take a look at some to their statistical leaders. C Danny Clair leads the Bruins with 9 goals this season. The 19 year old also has 2 assists for 11 points. Last season as a rookie Clair had just 6 goals in 82 games and now has 15 carreer NHL goals in 103 games. He was a points goal scorer in junior, in his final year with the Kamloops Blazers he had 36 in 72 games. Clair was the 89th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by the Bruins.

Veteran RD Gerald Rowe is tied for assists with 9 on the Bruins squad. The 32 year old 1982 Conn Smythe Winner and 1982 Norris Trophy Winner has 4 goals as well for 13 points in 21 games this season. Rowe had not missed a game in 2+ seasons and has 30 goals with 123 points and 199 PIMs in 185 career NHL games.

C Andrew Carylyon leads the team in points with 17. The 38 year old has 8 goals and 9 assists with a +13 rating in 21 games this year. Injuries have kept Carylyon from being a consistant producer over the past 2 seasons, he has been limited to 35 and 56 games in those seasons. So far this season he has not missed a game. In 112 career games, he has 36 goals, 46 assists for 82 points but is only 3rd to teammates RW Mike McDaniel and LD Tom Grimes in NHL career +/- with a +71 rating. Four of the Top Ten are Bruins with RD Gerald Rowe in 8th.

The Bruins will start G Jerry Welch in net, he has a .919 save % with 8 wins in 12 starts. Montreal goes back to G Mike Blackshear, he has a .878 save % with 10 wins in 17 starts.

Montreal opens the scoring early on the PP as C Dave Wright gets his 10th of the season at 1:57. Rookie Jiri Bohm gets his first NHL point with an assist on the goal. Montreal carries the momentum through most of the period and out shoots Boston 8 to 6. Boston 0 for 1 on the PP and Montreal was 1 for 1.

The 2nd period was scoreless as the Bruins came on a bit and out shot the Habs 10 to 8. The Bruins were 0 for 3 on the PP in the 2nd while Montreal was 0 for 1 in the 2nd. This is looking like another tight game between these teams as they have only scored 5 goals between them in the first two games this season.

Montreal grabs a 2-0 lead at 2:32 of the 3rd, Dave Wright gets another, his 11th of the year. David Wright completes the "Hat Trick" into an empty cage at 19:15 of the 3rd to put the final nail in the Bruins coffin and a 3-0 lead. The Habs newly formed 2nd line was the going real well today.

Canadiens C Dave Wright was named the 1st star with his 3 goals. The 27 year old now has 12 goals, 6 assists for 18 points with 40 PIMs in 22 games. In his 2nd game in the NHL LW Jiri Bohm was named the 2nd star, besides his 1st NHL point, he was a +2 in 16:50 of ice time.

Carolina acquired Peyton in a trade with the Blue Jackets at the end of the 1981 season in which Peyton played in the AHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins LW Travis Chambers had 2 goals and an assist in a 4-3 win over the Bruins. The 32 year old Chambers now has 6 goals, 23 assists and 29 points on the season. Chambers is in his 3rd season in the NHL, he played the 80-81 in Detroit and was traded at the end of the season to Pittsburgh. A broken bone in his elbow limited him to 11 games in the 81-82 season. In 99 career NHL games, the 1981 All-Star has 34 goals, 58 assists for 92 points with 69 PIMs and a +17 rating.

New York Rangers (11-5-3) at Montreal Canadiens (13-8-1)

Montreal has two more home games before going on a 4-game West Coast trip, tonight it is the Rangers. Montreal will still be without LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten as we will play the Rangers for the 1st time this season.

Assistant captain LW/RW Ryan Murdoch is going to be a star in the future. Already considered a leader, the 19 year old has great on-ice vision that allows him to be a playmaker. He had a concussion in the pre-season that has limited him to just 7 games in his rookie season this year. In those games he has 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points and 12 PIMs. Murdoch had a successful junior career that seen him score 74 goals, assist on 92 more for 166 points and 265 PIMs in 136 games in the QMJHL for the Quebec Remparts. Drafted in the 2nd round, 41st overall for the Rangers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

LD Lance Turgeon is always a scoring threat for back at the Blueline. The 31 year old Turgeon has 3 goals and 13 points in 19 games this season. Scouted as a durable playmaker, Turgeon has missed some games over the past 2 seasons with a variety of ailments. The Rangers will start G Pavel Hribek in the net, he has 3 wins this season with a .909 save % in 5 starts. Montreal goes with G Mike Blackshear, he has 11 wins in 18 starts with a .886 save %.

On the first shift of the game, LW Lorenzo Bocci gets injured and leaves the game, the trainer suggests it is a strained abdominal muscle. Montreal will move rookie Jiri Bohm to the 1st line. The Rangers strike first, LD Cory Clinton gets his 3rd of the year at 3:32. LW Ryan Murdoch puts the Rangers up 2-0 with his 4th of the season at 9:45. The announcement of the Rangers goal is just barely completed when the Canadiens wake up the Bell Center crowd as RW Al Ladd scores his 5th of the year at 10:17. The period ends with the Rangers leading 2-1, but the shots favour Montreal 9 to 7. Montreal was 0 for 2 on the PP while the Rangers did not have a man advantage.

Montreal again gives up the lead, RW Ryan Murdoch gets his 2nd of the night, his 5th of the year at 8:32 and the Rangers are up 4-3. Montreal gets an PP opportunity at the 10:44 mark. Montreal is 0 for 4 on the PP so far. The Rangers kill the penalty successfully. Montreal got 3 shots on the PP but still trail. Montreal could not find the 4th goal as they out shot the Rangers 11 to 9 in the 3rd.

Rangers RW Ryan Murdoch was named the 1st star. The 19 year old had 2 goals and now has 5 goals, 4 assists for 9 points in 8 games in his rookie season.

Montreal Canadiens (13-10-1) at Edmonton Oilers (18-6-1)

Montreal starts a 4-game West coast trip facing the #1 team in the league in Edmonton. The Oilers have a 12 point lead in the Pacific Division over the Kings just 25 games in. The Oilers lead the league with 91 goals and 3.64 per game. They have the top PP% in the NHL at 22.4%. With Montreal's 23rd overall 81.6% PK rate, it would be advisable to stay out of the box.

The Oilers are led by LD Frank Christian, the 31 year old has 7 goals and 26 points in 21 games this season. The strong skating playmaker is a UFA at the end of the season, and will likely have many suitors. In his 3rd season as an Oiler, the 1981 Norris Trophy Winner has 37 goals, 108 assists for 145 points with 121 PIMs and a +40 rating in 175 career NHL games.

The Oilers also have RD Flint Meyers patroling the blue line. The 33 year old has 1 goal and 4 points in 19 games this year. Obviously not a goal scorer, but he is responsible defensively and a good break out passer. Also in his 3rd season as an Oiler, Myers has 21 goals, 69 assists for 90 points with 69 PIMs and a +35 rating in 181 NHL games.

There was much attention on this veteran C when he went on a run of consecutive games with a point. The American born 35 year old Lawrence Diamond has 18 goals and 33 points in 25 games this season. He is a magician in the faceoff circle leading the NHL in career faceoff wins while being an excellent puckhandler. Diamond has played all 3 seasons in the Oilers Blue and Orange. In 179 career games, the 1981 All-Star has 68 goals, 103 assists for 171 points with 131 PIMs and a +44 rating.

Montreal will start G Mike Blackshear, he has 11 wins in 20 starts with a .881 save %. The Oilers go with G Saku Heikkinen who they acquired in a trade earlier this season. Heikkinen the league's career wins leader has had 8 starts with 5 wins and a .914 save %.

The Habs come out flying with a quick volley of shots early but go shorthanded and Oilers RW David Panniers makes them pay with his 9th on the PP at 4:29, their 1st shot on goal. Montreal out shoots Edmonton 8 to 2 in the period but pay for a Yevgeny Ronov minor penalty.

The Oilers score their 2nd goal on their 4th shot of the game shortly after killing a penalty when LD Frank Christian pots his 8th of the year at 3:41. Montreal is out shooting the Oilers 12 to 4 at this point. The Oilers make it 3-0 as RW Mason Flynn gets his 3rd of the year at 6:13. Its now 4-0 as LW Marcus Brody gets his 7th of the year at 11:29. Edmonton out shoots Montreal 16 to 14 in the period and lead 4-0.

Montreal gets a goal off a face off win as LW Batsaikhany Vanoosten gets his 4th of the year. Its now 4-1 at 10:56. Any chances Montreal had were drained when Batsaikhany Vanoosten put the Oilers on the PP with 2:22 remaining for delay of game. The Habs killed to penalty but lost 4-1.

Oilers LD Frank Christian was named the 1st star, he had a goal and an assist, was a +2 in 27:00 minutes of ice time. The 31 year old now has 8 goals and 28 points in 22 games.

Toronto Maples will be without RW Ryan Lewis for roughly 5 weeks with a fractured jaw. The 28 year old Lewis has 12 goals and 25 points in 22 games this season. The upcoming UFA is a strong offensive player with great puckhandling and passing skills. Montreal Canadiens (13-11-1) at San Jose Sharks (9-13-2)

Montreal are playing on back to back nights and hoping that they can get back on the winning track. Montreal has sent down G Steve Burris and recalled G Richard Day with the intent to get another NHL start/experience for Day while giving G Mike Blackshear the night off on back to back games. The 19 year old Day has 12 wins in 18 games for the AHL IceCaps while recording a 2.55 GAA and .911 save %. In his one and only start with Montreal this season, a win he stopped 21 of 23 shots.

San Jose is 5th in the Pacific, currently 4 points behind the 3rd place Anaheim Ducks in the race for a guarenteed playoff spot. The Sharks are last in goals against in the NHL with 92 against and 3.83 per game.

San Jose's top player is C Ben Yaremovich. The 31 year old has 5 goals and 24 points in 24 games. The 2-time All-Star is primarily an offensive player and great in the faceoff dot. In his 3rd season as a Shark, he has 63 career goals, 84 assists for 147 points with 162 PIMs and a -7 rating.

On RD is Quebec born Renaud Larouche. The 33 year old has a goal and 6 points this season in 24 games. Larouche has a great shot from the point but his plays a solid defensive game. He has played his whole career in a Sharks jersey, a total of 188 games. He has scored 19 times, has 66 career assists for 85 points with 70 PIMs and a +5 ratiing the NHL.

Young Gordie Selkirk patrols the LD position. The 20 year old has 1 goal and 11 points so far in 24 games. A smart offensive player with good passing skills and shot, he has a lot of strong phyiscal characteristics in that 6'3" frame. In his 2nd year as a Shark, he has 8 goals, 46 assists for 54 points with 193 PIMs and a +11 rating in 106 career NHL games. Selkirk was the 1st round, 2nd overall pick of the Sharks in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft after he finished his junior career with the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL.

Montreal will start G Richard Day who won his only NHL start, he has a .913 save % while the Sharks will start G Zbynek Vitek. Vitek has a .891 save % in 9 starts with 2 wins.

Montreal opens the scoring at 7:28 when C Chris Hughes gets his 15th on the PP. San Jose holds the momentum though out shooting Montreal 11 to 3 at the mid-point of the period. The final shots are 13 to 8 for San Jose but Montreal leads 1-0.

Montreal starts the 2nd with a better defensive effort, San Jose got their 1st shot of the period just shy of 9 minutes in. Montreal capitalized on another PP when RW Al Ladd got his 7th of the year at 10:15 for a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, RW Yevgeny Ronov gets his 3rd of the year and it is 3-0 Montreal at 11:04. The period ends with Montreal out shooting San Jose 10 to 7 in the 2nd. Montreal is 2 for 4 on the PP while San Jose is 0 for 2.

San Jose puts Montreal on the PP at 12:42, the Habs have a chance to salt this one away. Taking mostly a low risk stance, Montreal only gets one shot on the PP. I reward the 2nd line of Bohm, Wright and Ronov with some extra ice time late as they are having a strong game. C Dave Wright takes a hooking penalty with 10 seconds left, to give the Sharks one last chance to break the shut-out. C Jim Rutgers wins the draw and clears the zone so the G Richard Day can get his 1st career shutout.

No surprize rookie G Richard Day is named the first making 32 saves in his 1st career shut out. The 19 year old now has 2-0-0 record in 2 starts with a 0.98 GAA and .964 save %.

Montreal Canadiens (14-11-1) at Los Angeles Kings (12-11-3)

The Canadien's Western Road Trip continues with a stop in Los Angeles to face the Pacific Divisions 2nd place team at the Staples Center. Montreal made a roster move today sending G Richard Day back to St Johns in the AHL to continue to get more playing time but promoted St Johns backup G Jason Wells. Wells is 2-3-0 with a 2.81 GAA and .918 save % in 6 AHL games this season. The 29 year old has played in 3 games with the Habs going back to the 1980-81 season. The purpose of the move is to get G Steve Burris some playing time in the AHL. Montreal has played the Kings once, on October 3rd we beat the Kings 4-2 in Montreal. The Kings rank last in the NHL for shots against per game with 38.

The Kings are led by C Tyler Gomes. The 28 year old has 1 goal and 7 points in 26 games this season. Gomes's strengths are his face offs and getting into the goalies grill to screen em. The native of Wetaskiwin AB had a career high of 21 goals in the 1980-81 season for the Oilers, but has struggled since then. In 170 NHL games, he has 31 goals, 55 assists for 86 points with 177 PIMs and a +24 rating.

RD Tomas Ferenc will not be in the line-up for the Kings. The 37 year old Ferenc was injured during the Kings last game and is expected to be day to day with whiplash. Ferenc had 5 goals and 22 points in 26 games this season. The puck moving defenseman is a strong passer with great offensive read. In his 3rd season with the Kings, Ferenc has 26 goals, 85 assists for 111 points with 168 PIMs and a +23 rating in 173 NHL games.

At C the Kings have 29 year old Brit Sedgwick. Sedgwick has 8 goals ans 16 points in 26 games this year. Best discribed as a team player, Sedgwick is strong on both sides of the rink. In his 3rd season as a King, Sedgwick has 68 goals, 82 assists for 150 points with 172 PIMs and a +27 rating in 185 games.

Montreal will go with G Mike Blackshear between the pipes, he has 11 wins in 21 starts with a .879 save %. The Kings will start Harrison Wylie. Wylie has 9 wins in 21 starts with a .902 save %.

Montreal needed just 48 seconds to open the scoring when RW Yevgeny Ronov got his 4th of the year. The Kings tie it at 16:51 when C David Hruby gets his 2nd of the year on the PP. The period ends tied with the shots tied at 8 as well.

The 2nd period was scoreless with the Habs out shooting the Kings 16 to 14 in the period. The Kings are currently on the PP to end the period and are 1 for 5 so far in the game while Montreal is 0 for 3.

The Kings take a 2-1 lead at 11:45 of the 3rd when LD Ernest Howell gets his 4th of the season. The Kings make it 3-1 at 16:54 when LW Eddie Kilmer gets his 4th of the season. Los Angeles salts it away with another goal just seconds later at 17:02 from RD Ben Donelan. Montreal could not get going on the PP as they were 0 for 6 while the Kings were 1 for 7. Rookie LW Jiri Bohm got in his 1st NHL fight, he didnt win but he showed up.

The first star was Kings C Brit Sedgwick with his 2 assists. The 29 year old now has 8 goals and 18 points in 27 games.

Montreal Canadiens (14-12-1) at Arizona Coyotes (9-16-2)

We are playing the Coyotes for the first time this season, the final game of a 4-game road trip. A quick review of the teams stats indicate that despite giving up the 2nd least shots per game (26) we give up the 23rd most goals (2.93) per game. Is it goaltending? Possible. Of the goalies with 10 or more games played, G Mike Blackshear is 34th in save % at .879. Is it style of play, former Habs starter G Vladimir Lysek had a .895 save % for Montreal before being traded to for Blackshear, he ended up with a .933 save % later with Minnesota while Blackshear had a .914 save % with Minnesota and finished that same season with Montreal at .891. My "Colapsing to the Net" requires good shot blockers and we do seem to get scored alot by opposition defensemen. Maybe this is an area we need to look at my team is ranked 24th in shot blocking.

The Arizona Coyotes are currently last overall in the West and struggle to score goals. They are currently 29th in GF with 2.11 per game. Arizona does have some good talent though but appear to be missing the playoffs for the 3rd straight season.

In net, they are very fortunate to have G Paul Dean. The 32 year old Dean is signed until the 86-87 season and has a 7-9-2 record with 1 SO, a 2.66 GAA and .919 save %. Positioning and rebound controls are his strength and he had no real weaknesses. In his 3rd season as a Coyote, he has a 58-68-12 record with 5 SO's, a 2.78 GAA and .913 save % in 137 NHL games.

At RD they have Lewis Conrad. The 29 year old from Colorado has 2 goals and 10 points this season in 27 games. An All-Star in 1982, Shot blocking and defensive read are his strengths. As well in his 3rd season with Arizona, he has 28 goals, 73 assists for 101 points with 138 PIMs and a -15 rating in 191 games.

Currently injured and out for a few months with a MRSA Infection, 32 year old C Nicholas Megannety will be missed. In 22 games this season, he has 8 goals and 18 points. An agile skater with great passing and puck handling skills the often injured Megannety was held to just 43 games last season. In his 3rd season with Arizona, he has 42 goals, 74 assists for 116 points with 74 PIMs and a +8 rating.

In the net for Montreal is G Mike Blackshear. He has 11 wins in 22 starts with a .879 save %. G Paul Dean will start for Arizona, he has 7 wins in 18 starts and a .919 save %.

Its didn't take long for the Coyotes to strike, RW Jakub Masaryk got his 5th of the year to make it 1-0 at 0:50.. The low scoring Coyotes make it 2-0 at 11:34 when LD Timothy Dion gets his 3rd of the year. The period ends 2-0 for Arizona with the shots favouring Montreal 11 to 10.

The Coyotes score again at 1:50 of the 2nd, C Tomas Cerny gets his 8th of the year to make it 3-0. The on-slaught continues when LD Timothy Dion gets his 2nd of the night at 6:23. Thats 4 goals on 15 shots. Thats it for Mike Blackshear, in comes Jason Wells. The news get worse as it appears that RD Matej Ouhrabka is questionable for the remainder of the game due to an finger injury. The Coyotes go up 5-0 on LW Zybynek Serbus's 3rd of the year at 14:15. Montreal does break the shut out when RW Al Ladd collects his 8th of the year at 15:47. Its now 5-1 for the Coyotes. The period ends with the Habs outshooting the Coyotes 23 to 22 after the 2nd.

With just under 10 minutes left in the game, C Dave Wright puts the Coyotes on their 2nd PP of the game. At 11:22 LD Marc-Andre Berube goes off for high sticking so the Coyotes will have a 2 man advantage for just under a minute. The Habs kill off both, but have just over 6 minutes left to score 4 times. Montreal out shoots the Arizona 10 to 8 in the 3rd, but still lose 5-1.

Arizona Coyotes RD Timothy Dion has 2 goals and an assist as the 1st star. The 19 year old Dion now has 4 goals and 12 points in 28 games this season.

Minnesota Wild (15-11-2) at Montreal Canadiens (14-13-1)

Montreal has fallen to 4th in the Atlantic, 4 points out of 3rd and the final playoff spot. Montreal has only scored 6 goals in their last 3 games, while giving up 13. Montreal are 1-5 since LW Lorenzo Bocci went on the IR.

The Wild have won 3 of their last 4 and are currently 5th in the division, 6 points out of 3rd. The Wild on average 9 PIMs a game, so don't expect too many PP chances and generally Wild games are close checking, low scoring affairs.

The Wild 1st line consists of 18 year LW Dennis Bigham. He currently has 12 goals and 18 points in 28 games. Bigham is in his rookie season after playing his junior career for the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. He was the 1st round, 1st overall pick of the Wild in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.

At C is 20 year old Vincent Pfister. Pfister has 5 goals and 23 points in 28 games for the Wild. In his 2nd year for the Wild, he had 14 goals and 46 points in his rookie season. Pfister was the Wilds 35th overall pick in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft.

At RW is 29 year old Daniel Ipser. Ipser has 2 goals and 7 points in 28 games this season. In his 3rd year in the NHL, 2nd with the Wild Ipser has played in 181 games, has 50 goals and 106 points. He was traded to the Wild by the Dallas Stars for C Michael McDaniel.

At LD the Wild have 31 year old Mike Hendricks, The 31 year old has 4 goals and 13 points in 28 games. A 2-time All-Star, Hendricks has played all 3 seasons for the Wild. In 191 career games, he has 24 goals with 91 points.

Montreal will be with out RD Matej Ouhrabka. He is listed as day to day. Montreal will adjust the defensive pairings to be...

Berestnev-Sulc
Berube-Bartolcic
Arrington-Rickford

The Wild will start G Jaroslav Hecko, in 20 starts he has 12 wins and a .913 save % while Montreal will start G Mike Blackshear. He has 11 wins in 23 starts with a .875 save %.
