Post College + Majors II: Can't Keep Us Down

So the game finally killed my save that contained a league of all the D1 baseball college programs. That’s fair enough. However, I shall not be stopped. I return with a better sequel. In College + Majors II, we have the MLB and the ten-team Coastal Massachusetts Summer League (based on the Cape Cod Baseball League). This is how each post is going to look in this new and improved sim:

CMSL
-Regular season standings
-All Star result
-Playoff picture
-Awards
-Notable events

MLB
-Word Series champion
-Awards
-Retirements
-Notable transactions
-Hall of Fame results

Draft watch
-Tracking the 1st overall pick from the draft and the CMSL (which will feed into the MLB draft class)

CMSL
The CMSL is comprised of 44 games running from mid-June to early August. At the end of the season, the top four teams from the two divisions proceeded to the playoffs.

At the end of the season, the standings looked like this:

The East won the All Star Game (held on July 7th in Hyannis) 8-6.

The playoffs are detailed below, with Hyannis taking the title in a three game Championship series:

Pitcher of the Year went to Braedon Duder of NJIT, who spent the summer with Wareham. He went 2-0 with a 1.07 ERA and 58 Ks in 50.1 innings pitched. Duder, who is a junior, also won MVP. The Reliever of the Year was won by Eli Verdi and New Mexico/Chatham. The Lobo senior went 1-0 with five saves and an ERA of 0.00 in 20.2 innings of work.

The season saw one no-hitter, throw in late June by Steve Walton of Hyannis against Chatham. He walked four and struck out four on June 29th.

MLB
The Atlanta Braves claimed their first World Series title since 1995, beating Cleveland in five games. Despite winning their first AL pennant since 2016, the Indians were no match for Atlanta.

Kyle Tucker (Houston- .314, 37 HR) claimed AL Rookie of the Year. Pete Alonso (New York- .308, 38 HR) claimed the NL counterpart. And I just want to say, I have run 2019 in this game a lot and I don’t think I have ever seen Pete Alonso come anywhere close to his real life home run total. Congrats to Alonso for breaking the rookie home run record though. Blake Snell (Tampa Bay- 16-8, 2.94 ERA, 236 Ks) retained his AL Cy Young award. Walker Buehler (Los Angeles- 14-5, 2.25 ERA, 223Ks) collected the NL award. Mike Trout (Los Angeles- .326, 45 HR) collected his third AL MVP award while Bryce Harper (Philadelphia- .302, 45 HR). Harper’s win marks the first by a Philly since Jimmy Rollins in 2007.

11 players hung up their cleats at the end of the season- Jeff Mathis, Brandon Phillips, David Freese, Rich Hill, Francisco Liriano, Albert Pujols, Brian Duensing, Curtis Granderson, Matt Kemp, Dustin Pedroia, Brian McCann.

And a whole bunch of players found a new home throughout the season (checked on December 31st, 2019):

Via trade:
-Steve Pearce is now a White Sock
-Andrew McCutchen is now a Cardinal
-Nelson Cruz is now a Met
-David Peralta is now a Marlin
-Robinson Cano is now an Indian
-Roberto Osuna is now an Angel
-Jake Odorizzi is now a Cardinal
-Jose Quintana is now a Dodger
-Dansby Swanson is now a Red Sock

Via free agency:
-Didi Gregorius is now a Red Sock
-Xander Bogaerts is now a Yankee
-Yasmani Grandal is now a Rockie
-Josh Donaldson is now an Angel
-Rick Porcello is now a Philly
-Khris Davis is now a Diamondback
-JD Martinez is now a Philly
-Zack Wheeler is now a Cub
-Yasiel Puig is now a Red Sox

(If you want to know about a specific player I haven’t listed, just hit me up or leave a comment)

Of note- Max Scherzer, Felix Hernandez, Zack Grienke, and Cole Hamels all passed 2500 career strikeouts while Chris Sale passed 2000. Jay Bruce and Justin Upton passed 300 home runs while Kenley Jansen passed 300 saves.

Four men received the Call to the Hall- Derek Jeter, Barry Bonds, Todd Helton, and Curt Shilling.

Draft Watch
Draft Watch does return. Each season, we look at the first overall pick, the highest overall pick from our custom league, and the picks from previous years.

This year, we only look at the first overall pick. As expected, Baltimore took catcher Adley Rutschman from Oregon State. In 33 games for the low-A Aberdeen Ironbirds, Rutschman hit .232 with two home runs and fifteen RBIs. His OPS was .663 and his defensive efficiency was 1.081.

The 2020 season will be up on September 30th.

CMSL
The 2020 season finished as follows:

The East won a second straight All Star Game, beating the West 6-4

Hyannis’ Victor Concepcion was named Pitcher of the Year after going 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA and 60 Ks in 57.1 innings of work. Reliever of the Year went to Cotcuit’s Josh Ellis for his 2-1, 1.31 ERA, 35 K season. And it was Falmouth’s Yolbert Sanchez who took home MVP. The Yale junior hit .335 and no home runs in his award-winning season.

There was nothing notable about the season. Literally nothing was added to the Accomplishments tabs.

MLB
After falling to the Braves in five last season, the Indians finally broke the cure of Rocky Colavito and won their first World Series since 1948. They beat the Mets, although they needed seven games to do it.

Mike Ford (Detroit- .285, 19 HR) collected the AL Rookie of the Year while Taylor Trammell (Cincinnati- .309, 28 HR) collected the NL Award. For his efforts in taking them to the Fall Classic, Shane Bieber (Cleveland- 19-2, 3.10 ERA, 175 Ks) received the AL Cy Young. However, his numbers paled in comparison to those of Jacob deGrom (26-0 (in 33 starts), 1.73 ERA, 245 Ks). He led the Mets to the World Series, going 3-0 in 5 starts along the way. However it would be Manny Machado (San Diego- .333, 40 HR) who would take home NL MVP. Mike Trout (Los Angeles- .317, 39 HR) retained the AL title and marked the fourth of his career.

More than a few players played their final game in 2020: Jim Adduci, Ian Desmond, Chris Hatcher, Ryan Feierabend, Cole Hamels, Jared Hughes, Tommy Layne, Russell Martin, Kurt Suzuki, Adam Wainwright, Steven Wright, Ben Zobrist, Miguel Cabrera

And a few more found new homes (data collected on December 31st):
Via trade:
-Zack Godley is a National
-Steve Pearce is a White Sock… again (He was traded to the Twins, who then traded him back to the White Sox)
-Hunter Renfroe is a Giant

Via Free Agency:
-Trevor Bauer is a Tiger
-Mookie Betts is a Met
-DJ LeMahieu is a Cardinal

No-one entered the Hall of Fame.

Notably, Justin Verlander passed 3000 strikeouts while Clayton Kershaw surpassed 2500. Before retiring, Miggy hit his 500th home run while Edwin Encarnacion and Giancarlo hit 400 as Mike Trout, Evan Longoria and Joey Votto passed 300.

Draft Watch
2019’s top pick Adley Rutschman played 125 games across High-A, Double-A and the MLB. He finished the year hitting .305 with 13 home runs and a .825 OPS. Behind the plate, he wasn’t spectacular and finished the year with a .868 defensive efficiency.

2020’s first overall was SS Cooper Swanson out of Florida State. Taken by, you guessed it, the Orioles, Swanson played 29 games for their Gulf League affiliate and hit .228 with 2 home runs. The first CMSL player to be taken was catcher Ranis Silva in the 14th round, but he failed to sign with the Astros.

The 2021 season will be published on on October 3rd.

Pitcher of the Year was Yarmouth-Dennis’ Aldo Ramirez. The Incarnate Word starter went 4-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 45 Ks. Ramirez’s teammate Zac Kent, who pitches Ohio State during the collegiate season, won Reliever of the Year. Kent went 4-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 30 Ks. Chatham’s Aaron Perry was named MVP, having gone 2-1 with a 1.48 ERA and 46 Ks. The decision was controversial, with many arguing that Ramirez should have won MVP.

MLB
The Mets won their first World Series title since their legendary 1986 win. They defeated the Tigers 4-2 in the Fall Classic. This marked the second straight season in which the runner-up from the year prior won the World Series.

Dylan Carson (Detroit- .278, 31 HR) won AL Rooke of the Year as part of the Tigers’ World Series run. Drew Ellis (Arizona- .273, 27 HR) collect the NL variant. Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles- 15-7, 2.48 ERA, 245 Ks) broke out for a Cy Young winning season. Noah Syndergaard (New York- 17-10, 2.0 ERA, 240 Ks) continued the trend of the Mets winning the NL Cy Young. Thor’s win marked the third such instance since 2018. Mike Trout (Los Angeles- .268, 31 HR) retained the MVP trophy for the third year, taking his career total to five. This firmly puts him second in career MVP titles behind Barry Bonds, who earned the award seven times. In the NL, young phenom Juan Soto (Washington- .320, 37 HR) collected his first MVP title.

A number of big name players retired- Sean Doolittle, Evan Longoria, Jed Lowrie, Chase Headley, Martin Prado, Yoenis Cespedes, Dioner Navarro, Max Scherzer, Adam Jones, Tony Barnette, Nick Markakis, Pedro Strop
And few more found themselves in a different uniform:
Via trade:
-German Marquez is now a White Sock
-Luke Voit is an Astro
-Dallas Keuchel is a Dodger (signed with the Giants in 2019)

Free agency:
-Nolan Arenado is a Yankee
-Andrew McCutchen is a Giant
-Javier Baez is a Philly
-Anthony Rizzo signed a 5-year extension with the Cubs

A number of players also hit major milestones in their careers. Ryan Zimmerman and Khris Davis both hit their 300th home run. On the mound, John Lester reached 2500 strikeouts while Madison Bumgarner passed 2000.

Draft Watch
Miami took California starter Joe Ammirato with the first overall pick. He went 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA and 12 Ks in 4 games. The first player out of the CMSL was Franly Mallen, a second baseman out of Hyannis, who the Indians took in the 11th round. In 12 games, he hit .147.

Adley Rutschman continued as the Orioles’ backup catcher. In 83 games, he hit .221 with six home runs. Behind the plate, he had a .888 defensive efficiency. Cooper Swanson remained in the Orioles’ farm system. In 67 games, he hit .223 and ten home runs.
