The "Ohtani" international free agents
Do the 5 star, super great, all that and a bag of chips international free agents do very well? I have the chance to sign a LF out of Cuba that is, by all scouting, the complete bomb! Should I sign a known MLB free agent? Or do these "Ohtani" free agents live up to their scouted hype?

I know this may not help, but sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. In my current game, I have two guys I signed out of Cuba that fit your description. One is a LF/1B/DH, the other a pitcher. The LF has been worth 6 WAR every season and hit 60 HRs one year. The pitcher, on the other hand, has averaged 5 starts/year before getting hit with season-ending injuries that have left him with 30 control (20-80 scale) and 50 movement. I've paid him more than $2 million per start at this point.
So, they're risks. You just gotta figure out which ones are the right ones to take. |

My experience has been mixed with these guys. In my current solo league, I signed a LF and 2B from Japan who both hit well above .300 and the 2B hit 40+ homers in his final year in Japan. I have had them both for three seasons and they have been solid contributors (and remain starters for me) after starting slow in their first season with me.
But I have also signed what the scouts said were future all stars, only to have them bomb. One example was a pitcher from Cuba who spent more time in Triple-A for me than he did in the majors, I think he ended his 4 year tour with me with a 10-21 record and an ERA over 5.00. Now I play with International Leagues on, so I disabled all created established players from other leagues. |

Like every other prospect in baseball, some make it, some don't.
