But looking it up shows that conventional wisdom is absolutely right about Carew being clearly the better hitter, which we all "knew" but occasionally I find I "kinow" something and I look it up and was wrong. Carew's career OPS+ (on base plus slugging compared to the league, average = 100) was 131, or 31% better than the average hitter in the league; Smalley's was 103, just 3% better. A defense-oriented manager looking for a middle infielder, well, Carew was a bad defensive 2B, bad enough to be moved to 1B, and had negative defensive WAR for his career.while Smalley was an above average defensive SS. I think if it were to play 2B (maybe not SS) I'd still rather have Carew, but I guess one could argue it. But to play DH-- defense doesn't matter, so as you say there's no justification for Smalley over Carew. The only possible justification might be a few years where one of Carew's weakest seasons aligned with one of Smalley's best, like Carew in 1971 compared to Smalley in 1983; if it were using those seasons Smalley would be the better hitter...but that's grasping at straws. |

Yeah. I think we are just grasping at straws to explain it. It’s a one year recall with dev off. The players were selected by users who typically took their best seasons (or close). I haven’t really seen any truly logical explanation other than there’s an issue when you import these guys.
I think the majority of us can agree it’s bad. Now I’m just trying to see if there’s a workaround. Or if I just need to force start them. Will that play them too much and force them to get injured? Am I going to have to manually do these lineups? Ugh. So frustrating. I’ve done this exact thing numerous times before in previous versions and don’t remember ever encountering this issue. |

This is ridiculous. I cant even force start players at the positions they played. The AI refuses to put them in. For example, Chipper is terrible defensively. Even if I buy they are better with Oberfell at 3B, they dont even use him at their top pinch hitter. He's the "3rd" best option vs both LHP and RHP??? This is absolute lunacy...

Yet, he was allowed to start 146 games, was selected to the All-Star team, won the Silver Slugger in CF, along with AL MVP, and ROY honours. Not a bad year's work. I wonder what's happening that's different in our games? The two players on the roster and reserve roster who could've "Oberkfelled" him were Johnny Watwood, and Joe Nossek, and they wound up with a total of 121 PA, so I can't figure out what's going on here. What's happening in my game is what should be happening. Pictures below...

Is this an issue that impacts historical games mostly?
Reading this has me checking the teams in one of my saves (in 2036, started as a 2019 MLB league, 20/80 scale). One of the good teams, the Phillies is starting a 45 rated SS over a 55 rated SS because of the bat. The good hitting SS is rated at 75 while the better defender is rated at 40 because his bat is fringe for sure. On my own team, I have a SS with 75 defensive rating rated at just a 50 overall because his bat is...not good. If I had a better hitting SS, he'd probably get the start (manager sets the lineups). Another team has a 25 defense in LF starting (as in, in LF, not as DH). The depth starter isn't rated at LF at all while in AAA there's a 55 defense LF. That's just a few teams, but if anything, my league is undervaluing defense, or at least some of the teams really give little consideration. |

actionjackson did you import a player's season in that test?
KBLover I think so. I'm guessing it's tied to importing a specific player into the league. Only offensive though. I'm having no issues with pitchers (or good defensive players) |

Not in this case. These are players from a random debut who entered the league in the inaugural draft. I'd have some imported players from my old OOTP16 league, but that was four versions ago, and they all came from the Spritze database, so I doubt they'd be relevant to this problem.

So my workaround was to retire the players who were starting in front of my imported players. It worked ok for everyone but Carew. They refused to put him into the lineup starting both Randy Bush and Chip Hale at DH instead of him...

P.S. I will forever hate Randy Bush for breaking up Jim Clancy's no-hitter with nobody out in the ninth in a late September game in 1982. If memory serves, it was a broken bat blooper to right, which twists the knife in even more, so I am now doubly deeply offended.
