Nov 1 2013 League Leaderboards

NHL Leaders - Chicago's Patrick Kane and Montreal's Max Pacioretty are the early goal leaders with Kane shouldering the load due to an injury to Johnathan Toews. Points leader currently is Kane with C Henrik Sedin two points back and a three-way logjam at 16 pts. Noting the Canuck's D Jason Garrison is getting an early start to the Norris race, leading the pack in scoring and points and definitely not shy in the penalty dept!

In the goalie standings, the Rangers Henrik Lundqvist's bad outing against the Sabres took him out of the top spots but he still is tied for the league lead in wins with Buffalo's Ryan Miller. Carolina's Cam Ward slightly trails the Wild's J. Gustafsson in GAA, and they are tied in save percentage, but it should be noted that Gustafsson is splitting time with J Harding while Ward is the clear #1 in between the Hurricane's pipes.

Oct Attendance Figures

Found this interesting little tidbit... 79% sold seat capacity for my .500 Panthers. And I'm envious of the Buffalo Sabres attendance... vs. real life - it's just so wrong!

Game 13 vs. St Louis Nov 1st

The Panthers have had 4 days to prepare for St. Louis and has the experience of playing them once this season, a close loss and Bonehead wants to motivate the troops with that memory. Coach Stewart and Coach Pauwelyn have exaustively researched the tendencies of the Blues so far and are convinced we need to roll all 4 lines against the Blues who primarily rely on their top two lines. Coach McCabe is rejoined by Coach Tyulin who is surprisingly talkative but clearly is deferential to Coach McCabe's wishes. Coach McCabe is adamant that with the four lines rolling he needs to equalize play among the defense pairings and hopes there is not too much special teams play from the Blues.
As the puck is dropped here is the first period lines

The first period is not horrible but the Blues are flying and the home team looks like their legs are set in cement. The only damage is a Chris Stewart ES goal at the 11:12 mark. There were only two penalties called but both were holding penalties against the Panthers who were trailing the play and not skating hard. Coach Stewart is unusually agitated and Bonehead keeps his comments brief and lets Craig have his say... Most of what was siad cannot be printed in family newspapers and would surely shock his wife, but the message seems to have gotten through to the players!
Bonehead sees no urgent need to change up strategy, but definitely wants more shots generated so "Unleash the Beast" comes early!

The second period has no scoring but the skates are pumping and the shots are flying for the Panthers! The Blues took their first penalty of the game, but the Panthers couldn't cash in on the opportunity. Coach Stewart is pleased with the results and is urging the players to keep it up for twenty more minutes. Bonehead wants more time for the first line to work its magic so he drops the third line to 5 mins. and adds 5 mins to the first two lines to get the equalizer in the third.

The third period is a great disappointment as the Blues tally twice early for a three goal cushion and The frustration comes out in dumb penalties and while the Panthers hit the post and the crossbar on good shots, they just can't get one on the scoreboard... The final is a 3 -0 shutout and some of the fans are booing as the game ends.

The post game conference is somber and not many questions are asked but one brash young sports reporter decides to test Bonehead... " Coach Moore, you didn't visibly change anything in the third period, are you admitting defeat already this early in the season?... Bonehead starts to rise to the bait, then decides to tweak the reporter instead for everyone's enjoyment... " Gee you know, I didn't think of that! You think we should of maybe played harder? Bent the posts to make sure those shots went in? The third period results are what they are son." Bonehead points to the dry erase board behind him "We made adjustments to T.O.I. and a line that hadn't been scored on in the first two periods got lit up twice? OK I'll admit that but unless you have an answer to your own question that you care to share with all of us - next question?" Some of the veteran reporters are snickering but no one offers anything else and the Coach then heads upstairs where the seven and seven is waiting to be poured.

SCORES
Trying a new format...
WAS - 5 PHI - 4 The Capitals Mikhail Grabovski (7.5c) finally found the back of the net with just :20 sec left for his first goal of the season to give the visiting Capitals a needed win, D Luke Schenn (7.0a/7.5a) (0G/3A) was +2 on the evening in a otherwise poor performance by the Flyers "D".

NYI - 3 OTT -4 The Senators ran out to a 2 - 0 lead after the first period only to see a furious third period comeback effort from the Islanders fall on a late C Jason Spezza (8.0d) ES goal after tying it up. Sens C Zach Smith (6.5c/7.0c) (2G/1A) had a three point night and First Star honors for his efforts.

COL -0 DAL - 6 Stars coach Lindy Ruff told players before the game to forget October's record and just play "like they know they can". Those words certainly were heard by the locker room! Stars G Dan Ellis (6.5a) turned away all 30 Av's attempts for the shutout and First Star honors. The Stars dominated the shots in the game with 48, and Eric Cole had a natural hat trick in the second period to blow an otherwise close game open. In the post-game press conference the Av's coach pointed out that seven of nine penalties called went the Stars way and two of Cole's goals came on resulting PP's. No word from league officials if the Av's coach will be fined for his veiled comments about the officiating tonight.

CLB - 2 PIT - 1 A close checking evenly played game was enjoyed tonight by fans at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, and the outcome was all that they wanted changed. The Blue Jacket's 24 y/o AHL call-up G Jeremy Smith was spectacular in his first NHL game, allowing only one goal on 28 shots and getting third star honors. RW Marian Gaborik's (8.5d) third period score with 4:56 left proved to be the game winner.

DET - 2 CGY - 6 The Flames are proving themselves a real force in the Western Conference as they dismantled and demoralized the Red Wings tonight. The Flames second defensive pairing of Kris Russell (6.5c/7.5c) (0G/1A) and Chris Butler (7.0d) (0G/1A) were each a +3 with a point, and LW Jiri Hudler (8.0b) (2G/0A) scored two ES goals in the third period to help ice the game for the Flames.

SCORES - continued
TBY - 2 CAR - 3 LW Nathan Gerbe (6.5b/7.0b) (1G/0A), LW Jiri Tlusty (7.0b/7.5b) (1G/1A), and RW Alexander Semin (8.0b) (1G/0A) was all the goals the Hurricanes could get by Lightning G Ben Bishop (7.5a/8.0) on 42 shots, but G Cam Ward (8.0d) stopped everyone but Steven Stamkos (10.0a/10.5a) (2G/0A) from scoring on 35 shots for his eighth win of the season.

MTL - 3 MIN - 7 The Wild certainly lived up to their moniker tonight at home vs. the Canadiens! Wild D Clayton Stoner (6.5c) (0G/1A) was happy to oblige Montreal's D PK Subban (9.0b) (1G/1A) who tried to spark his team by picking a fight near the end of the first period. Sadly for Subban, like the score the fight went to the Wild. RW Jason Pominville (8.0c) (3G/1A) then answered a Montreal goal making it 3 - 2 by reeling of three consecutive goals over the second and third periods for his hat trick, effectively putting the game out of reach. Canadiens C David Desharnais (7.0d/7.5d) (1G/0A) and Wild C Mikael Grandlund (7.5a/8.0a) (1G/0A) traded garbage time goals to finish out the game and the score.

In other NHL news;
FLA - GM Bonehead Moore receives a unannounced visit from his owner and quickly updates him of team happenings and of potential trade negotiations with the San Jose Sharks and New York Islanders. Mr Viner nods and then hands Bonehead a suitably impressive report on the financial numbers and state of the team Bonehead wonders from who and how did the owner get all this information, without him knowing first? The meeting breaks up and Bonehead invites the owner to head down to the ice rink with him to see game practice for tonight's tilt vs. the Capitals.

FLA - Bonehead has Coach Pauwelyn and Coach Ramsay in the "War Room" as the Panthers just made an offer to the Islanders for D Calvin DeHaan (6.5b/7.0b) and LW Anders Lee (6.0c/7.0c) in a deal for D M. Gilroy (6.0a) and C Drew Shore (6.0a/7.0a). Bonehead and Coach Pauwelyn think it will be rejected but negotiations are possible.

In the other trade expedition Bonehead was working the phones with the Sharks GM Doug Wilson, who is in dire straits but is nevertheless known as a shrewd negotiator. GM Wilson told Bonehead to put together a reasonable offer and send it to him - youth is preferred and everyone on the Sharks is available for the right price. Bonehead is emboldened by the owners talk today that the budget can handle some additional load and he welcomes trades as long as we are not giving up prized prospects or draft picks. Bonehead offers G Tim Thomas to bolster the Sharks beleaguered goaltending woes, committing the Panthers to G Markstrom as the future, and D Dimitri Kulikov (6.5a/7.5a) who already is asking for $5M+ for a contract, In exchange Bonehead asked for "The Big T" 34 y/o C Joe Thornton (8.0b), LW John McCarthy (6.5d) a defensive minded forward and minor league G T. Grosenick (5.5d/6.0d).

Both Coaches think The Sharks will turn down the offer but again it will probably be open to negotiation... Standing by while the coaches start filing in for tonight's pregame tactics meeting.

Game 14 at Washington Nov 2nd

Bonehead, Coach Ramsay, Coach Pauwelyn, feel they have gameplanned as well as they can and wait for the defensive coaches to appear from practice to add input to the gameplan. Coach McCabe says keeping the defense constant is a priority with him so players develop a rhythm and confidence. Coach Tyulin disagrees that its necessary, but still defers to Coach McCabe.
Coach Ramsay sets up the dry erase board and announces the changes in tonight's lineup 3rd Line RW Butler will sit to give LW/RW Joey Crabb a start in the NHL and Crabbs better defensive numbers will probably help. Additionally the 4rd line will get 10 mins per period and the additional 5 mins will go to the 4th line to help cover the top 6 forwards of the Capitals... Coach McCabe announces D Matt Gilroy will play tonight instead of D Robak to give Robak a rest and keep Gilroy's head in the game.

The first period begins and after the first three minutes, the coaches moves look like pure genius... but after one period is played were tied at two and the shot advantage is 13 - 6 Washington. Bonehead is unhappy with Gudbransons stupid check to the back of Ovechkins head and the Panthers will start the second period with a major penalty and 4:58 to kill off the clock.

The Panthers start the second period successfully killing off the major and its the first line on the ice when the go ahead goal is scored by the Capitals. The Panthers PK players are gassed, and Bonehead and Coach Ramsay are trying to shuffle the lines to keep the oppositions top six from mismatching our lines and getting the PK rested. Fortunately only one more penalty is called and the Panthers escape the funhouse while Washington racks up 20 shots on goal in the period for a 33 - 18 total!

This team surprises Bonehead as even as they file in, they are talking about how lucky the Capitals are that the Panthers aren't scoring... Bonehead stresses the shot totals are going to catch up to the Panthers an they need to be more disciplined in their own zone with the puck.

The third period begins and Gudbranson is whistled again for boarding this time, and Bonehead glares down at Coach McCabe who nods back at him. Finally a break! the Capitals are called for tripping and the one goal lead can be neutralized by a PP goal... But a turnover by Capt Campbell sends a two on one SH attempt and C Eric Fehr buries it behind Markstrom for a two goal lead... An Absurd 4 seconds later the PP clicks and D Tom Gilbert cranks a slaphot that G Neuvirth never saw restores the one goal deficit and just as it seems the Panthers are getting untracked and generating some shots, D Gudbranson gets caught blatantly hooking a Capital player and back to the sin bin for his fourth trip... Fortunately the PK does its job again leaving the Capitals stumped with an 0 - 6 night on the PP. The score stays the same until the final buzzer and the shot totals are an embarrassing 48 - 23.

The Panthers doubled up Washington on takeaways (8-4) and halved the giveaways (7-14) compared to the opponents, probably salvaging the score tonight. The fourth line played exceptionally well and logged over 22 minutes each with Goc and Kopecky having over 7:00 of PK time alone! The first line (-2 +/-) were only on the ice for approx 9:00 mins and the first defensive pairing (-3+/-) was credited with a PP goal but made too many defensive mistakes tonight.

The post game press conference is short as Bonehead takes charge and admits faults and notes the positives (opposition's top six only accounted for 2 goals, 6 - 6 on PK results - again) Bone head promises a more complete analysis of the game and will hold a press conference tomorrow outlining some changes he's making to the team. The team charter is waiting at the airport and for once Bonehead thinks its taking forever to get all the equipment loaded and he tells the players to stop fooling around and be ready for the bus to leave or find their own way home...

SCORES
CHI - 7 WPG - 2 The Blackhawks notched their eighth straight win and the hapless Jets were simply no match for them tonight. The Chicago top line dominated, all three forwards had two goals apiece and LW Patrick Sharp (8.5a) added three helpers for the 5 point night and First Star honors.
STL - 2 TBY - 4 The favored Blues were upended in the third period when Tampa C Steven Stamkos (1G/1A) (10.0a/10.5a) and RW Martin St Louis (1G/1A) (8.5a) each scored ES goals to break open a deadlocked game.
CAR - 4 NYR - 3 The second line of the Hurricanes dominated the Rangers scoring 3 of the 4 goals in the contest including C Jordan Staal's (1G/1A) (8.0b) GWG early in the third period. Rangers C Brad Richards (2G/0A) (8.0b)played a fine game in the losing effort.
TOR - 5 VAN - 3 The Maple Leafs used a three goal first period to lead the Canucks and never looked back as they maintained at least a two goal cushion for the rest of the game. Tor RW Trevor Smith (2G/0A) (6.5c) was First Star although hometown favorite RW Alex Burrows (3G/0A) (7.5d) put up a hat trick to account for all the Canucks scoring on the night.

ARZ - 3 SJS - 5 The San Jose franchise has now won two of the past three games after dropping their last five in a row. RW Tommy Wingels (3G/1A) (7.0c/7.5c) had a natural hat trick in the third period and C Logan Couture (2G/2A) (8.0d/8.5d) also had a 4 point night to lead the Sharks, who scored four times in the third period after falling behind early in the third 2 - 1.
NAS - 3 LAK - 1 The Predators Pekka Rinne (3W/5L 3.02GAA .904Sv)(8.5c/9.0c) turned away 28 shots and was widely acknowledged to be the big difference as Nashville shut down the Kings vaunted offensive machine. Pred's D Kevin Kline (1G/1A) (7.0d) got the GWG in the first period and the Predator's 6'5" goalie did the rest.
PHI - 3 NJD - 1 The Flyers used a pair of goals from RW Jakub Voracek (2G/1a) (8.0b) and the solid goaltending of backup Ray Emery (3W/1L 2.20GAA .927Sv) (6.5b) in the victory over the Devils
MON - 5 COL -4 The Canadiens may have some "D" work to do on the PP, after 2 SH Avalanche goals, however after storming to a 4 - 1 lead in the first period on RW Brendan Gallagher (2G/2A) (7.5b/8.0b) and LW Max Pacioretty (2G/0A) (8.0c) PP goals its not the PP offense that's sputtering.

ANA - 4 BUF -0 The Anaheim Ducks had a plan and did they ever execute it on the Sabres ice tonight! RW Andrew Cogliano (3G/0A) (7.5d) and RW Teemu Selanne 1G/0A) (7.5c) provided all the scoring and Ducks G Jonas Hiller (7W/4L 2.34 GAA .918 Sv) (8.0c) shut the door on only 21 Buffalo shots. Sabres coach Ron Rolston offered no excuses in the post game press conference. "We got our butts handed to us and need to go back to what won us eleven games, and stop this skating in circles nonsense" he said before leaving the podium quickly.
BOS - 3 NYI -1 The Bruins are the latest team to skate into Nassau Co. Veterans Coliseum and manhandle the home team there. The Isles, who have now lost three straight by a combined score of 13 - 7, weren't afraid to mix it up with the visitors to the tune of two fights, a 10 min misconduct penalty, and several fouls of the minor variety for a total of 42 minutes in penalties for both teams. The ageless RW Shawn Thornton (1G/0A) (6.5a) just missed a Gordie Howe hat trick by not getting an assist in the game, but got the Third Star of the game for his performance.
PIT - 2 CLB - 7 "Blowout from start to finish" was the post game comment from Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma after the Blue Jackets used a three goal first period to dominate the Penguins and the game by a 47 - 26 shot margin. C Brandon Dubinsky (2G/3A) (7.5d) got his first two goals on the season and a +4 +/- on the evening. The Blue Jackets Matt Calvert (2G/2A) (6.5c/7.0c) also was +4 +/- and was selected as the Second Star for his efforts.
DET - 3 EDM - 5 The Oilers slowly took control of the contest in the second and third periods and Detroit never stood a chance of getting back in it in the third as the shot totals kept piling up for the Oilers for a 39 - 31 advantage. RW Nail Yakupov (2G/0A) (7.0b/8.0b) got First Star for his efforts and Gustav Nyqvist (2G/0A) (7.5b/8.0b) scored twice in a fine performance for Detroit.

In other NHL news;
DET - C Pavel Datsyuk (9.5c) left the morning skate with what one observer stated was almost certainly a hammy issue (hamstring). He was able to skate to the bench but then had to be assisted from the bench area to the dressing room. There has been no announcement from the team about the injury, but experts say this type of injury is usually a multi week recovery.
NYI - Promising youngster RW Ryan Strome (6.5d/8.0d) has been sidelined with a shoulder injury according to the Islanders post game press conference. There are no plans to place Ryan on I.R. at this point per the coach.

SCORES
DAL - 3 OTT - 4 30 y/o Senator backup goalie Nathan Lawson (6.0c) made his first NHL appearance since the 2010/2011 season with the NY Islanders and his teammates pulled out the victory for him on a late 3rd period goal from C Kyle Turris (2G/1A) (8.0c).
CGY - 5 CHI - 4 The Blackhawks flew back from Winnipeg this morning for the home game against the upstart Calgary Flames, and the Flames prevailed, scoring late in the third period on a SH goal by Matt Stajan (2G/0A) (6.5d) stunning the raucous crowd at the United Center. The Blackhawks last loss was back on Oct 17th against the rival Blues.
NJD -2 MIN - 4 Ageless G Marty Brodeur (8.0c) turned away 37 of 41 shots, but it was not enough as three Wild goals in the first period would be enough to defeat the tired Devils. Wild C Mikko Koivu (2G/0A) (8.0d) had both a PP and a SH goal to pace the winning squad.

In other NHL news;
WPG - G Ondrej Pavelec (7.0d/7.5d) suffered an undisclosed "Upper Body Injury" and will miss a couple games per the Jets press release. One beat writer wrote that "Pavelec certainly got hurt from whiplash and sunburn as the red light kept going off behind him all night." The Jets angrily denounced the report and called for an apology from the paper.
FLA - The first trade reply came into the "War Room" shortly after 9 am, as expected the Islanders turned down the trade offer, but what was surprising was the Islander's GM Garth Snow made no counter offer instead citing salary as the reason for not taking on the trade... Just to tweak him Bonehead sends back a counteroffer for C Franz Nielsen and his $2.5M salary in the trade. No word on the offer from San Jose yet and Bonehead turns his thoughts to new possibilities in the trade arena.

Was wondering if I can pick your head boss. Not really a hockey fan. Got the game because I like sports management games. Hockey was one of those sports I could not get into. I think because I don't understand the strategy's behind it. I'm trying. Played the east sides hockey version, liked the options, again did not understand it at all.

time on ice for the lines. I see here you have set it up 15 percent on all four lines. Do you change it? if so why?

With me not being so much of a fan, I really don't understand who are the top lines on the other team. what do you look for when you know you have a top line, or lines from other teams? Plus or minus stats look deceiving.

Forechecking, when you set this up do the dmen use those same settings or do they fluctuate with the lines as they come in.

I probably have tons more but lets starts with these if you don't mind.

FLA - Bonehead made the call to the owner and surprisingly Mr Viner was ready and waiting for it. This time the discussion went much better and the short story is the owner wants approximately $10M left in cap space, and he wants the offense improved. He has some reservations about the defensive scheme, since Bonehead advocated 8 shots per period and we are HUGELY above that number right now.

Bonehead gets it and promises results that will be evident by the months end. and the call is terminated. Jo is waiting by the office door and she obviously was listening in, which Bonehead doesn't mind but clues him in how the owner might be getting his information.

Coach Pauwelyn calls up from the practice area to see if I'm ready for the stats reports. I tell him to cut the morning practice short and bring the coaches up to the "War Room" and we will go over the updates.

I don't mind at all - and thank you for choosing me to ask.
1) Hockey was one of those sports I could not get into. I think because I don't understand the strategy's behind it. I'm trying. Hockey is about movement, just like soccer. The defensive part is blocking the oppositions movement towards your goal and get it going towards the enemy goal instead. The offense is about setting up the players in positions that maximize their skills and abilities to score in the 6' X4' net. The tongue in cheek comment is to do this more times than your opposition in the regulation time
2) time on ice for the lines. I see here you have set it up 15 percent on all four lines. Do you change it? if so why? This is my default T.O.I. - you will see MANY variations of this and it has to do with three basic tenets of hockey
a) Your most skilled players you want on the ice for the most time, now usually its your offensive players that get this extended ice time, but with the Panthers having trouble scoring I'm actually giving my best defensive players (Line #4) the most ice time. Now you can move these players to line #1 but the AI will use your TOI in regards to the "freshest" line and this is where line "mismatches" can occur. L1 vs L3 is a poor choice against the oppositions top line with your third line least skilled players.
b) Stamina is going to determine how long or how much time the player can handle before his performance degrades. The usual time for a hockey shift is 30-40 seconds, double shifting is exactly that, 60 to 80 seconds and any forward player will be gassed after skating that long. Thats where the players stamina and recovery time come into play and where the TOI matters. If I select a forward line for 15 mins its means that for the game the AI will send that line out around every two minutes and the TOI at the end of the game will approximate 15 minutes. Now your special teams time will affect this and also affect how your defensive players are used for regular shifts.
c) Defensive skating - this is important and your players stamina is something to consider as the defense stays out around around 60 to 90 seconds and sometimes as long as two minutes. The ability to get the defensemen tired and stuck in their end will usually result in a goal for you. The usual TOI can go up to 25 minutes for your best defensive pairing - but I like to have six defensemen that can do 20 minutes each so they can all pitch in on special teams. This keeps there being too much of a dropoff in performance if one of the defensemen gets injured during the game.

3) With me not being so much of a fan, I really don't understand who are the top lines on the other team. what do you look for when you know you have a top line, or lines from other teams? Plus or minus stats look deceiving. If you click on the blue name of the opposition team (Edmonton Oilers are my next opponent) then follow the three screens below to see how the team lines and TOI are set up - but remember the AI will adapt to your strategies too!

4) Forechecking is exclusively a forward function.. your forwards are venturing into the offensive zones to try and get the puck carrier to turn over the puck and catch the other team going the wrong way... Skating, Defensive read, and Pokechecking are good attributes for forechecking. (see screen 4)

There is a ton of things to cover in this game and feel free to ask in the forums too. I will look up some good websites to educate you on the basics of hockey and get back to you via private message. Or if anyone reading knows some feel free to post it here!

Forechecking. See there is something I was always confused by. I always thought it was like how close you defended. Never thought it was the forwards creeping into the offensive zone. Thought that is why you had the offense/defence settings.

Look at the drop down box in the player roster roster and choose Def skills. I took the Blues AI run team and copied the screens to show you the areas and my comments.

Hope it helps...

Trade rumors

The Boston Bruins staff keep contacting us about a trade, they apparently are still shopping LW Loui Eriksson (7.5a) and LW Daniel Paille (6.5b). After a quick conference call with the coaches, Bonehead combines the past offers into one package. LW Sean Bergenheim (6.5a), youngster C Drew Shore (6.0a/7.0a), D Matt Gilroy (6.0a) and unsigned prospect 22 y/o C Iiro Pakarinen (6.5e/7.0e) for the two Bruin LW's. The consensus does not expect GM Chiarulli to accept this deal either, but such is the NHL business as Bonehead is learning.

Just to make the phone lines burn up and create some waves, Bonehead makes an unsolicited offer to Toronto GM Dave Nonis to take the horrible contract of RW David Clarkson (6.5b), C Dave Bolland (7.5c) and just to make it totally unworkable he added in RW Phil Kessel (8.5c). The rumor mill has the Leafs looking for LD help so D Dimitry Kulikov (6.5a/7.5a) along with C Drew Shore (6.0a/7.0a) and D Matt Gilroy (6.0a) is the Maple leafs haul. Again there is a slight but very remote chance that Nonis will dump the salary, but at the cost of his offensive star?
