Hosmer
Okay, so I don’t know if this is or is not true. The milkman (yes, we get our milk from the farm weekly) just told me the Royals signed Hosmer.
Something like 7 and $150,000,000 Statistics don’t support it. Intangibles do. Also, it’s not my money! Anyone hear this? Or is it just milkman talk down on the farm?

He has not signed, this is simply an offer from the Royals as of now.

Is there really that much of a difference between Carlos Santana (who got 3 years/$60 million from the Phillies), and Eric Hosmer though? Aside from intangibles of course (as noted by Airdrop01 above). Ugh. Somebody's gonna lose big on this deal.

Numbers make Westheim dizzy. Westheim must lie down.

I dont know. I don’t care because it’s not my dough.
I’ll say this.... keeping him and keeping trying to win with a newish crop of kids will keep a lot more butts in the seats than will blowing everything up. Only fools would want to go back to the days where for thirty years I could rattle off the names and stats up to the minute of the top 30 prospects in the organization. That, and if sabremetrics were the Royals guide, they wouldn’t have won diddly squat. Rip down the two Pennants and the WS banner. I mean, that’s why the Royals in OOTP are garbage, even when they were winning Pennants. Sabremetrics is not the be all end all. I know I’m in the vast minority here on that, but that’s fine. To each his own. There’s math and there’s baseball. They’re not the same. I’m surprised at the numbers. But, I don’t care. Because I don’t want more Brandon Mosses, Jason Hammels and middling free agents. I can lose 105 with nobodys. I don’t need has beens or never weres losing 95.

He put up career numbers in a free agent year. It only makes sense that someone would over pay. It's been happening for decades and it will happen for decades more.

His agent is asking for 8 or more years. Not following baseball and just looking at him on BB Ref he looks like a strong stay away.

I’ll be honest, I could see the Cardinals getting him. Matt Carpenter could play just about anywhere which means first would be open for Hosmer.

Decent Fangraphs article portraying what Scott Boras' angle on Hosmer's value probably might sound like:
https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/wher...t-eric-hosmer/ I don't 100% agree, but the offers kinda match that line of thinking. |

Man, those type of articles! I mean, they’re interesting but....
It makes me hate WAR and all that sabremetics malarkey all the more. By that I mean it’s just more data, not some absolute God particle. If my GM is doing that type of work his office, I want him gone. I can get a college intern to do that. Again, I know I’m in the minority here, especially.

I'm not a big fan of translating WAR to $$$. That seems fairly meaningless to me.
Still all silent on the Hosmer front. FA has been slow this year. Not sure if it is the Ohtani effect or just because big revenue teams like the Dodgers and Yankees are trying to stay under the cap. |

Can you even get a proper main battle tank for that price these days? Let alone a whole war... Quote:

WAR is the value of a player relative to how the rest of the league performed that year, not just based off of a proverbial reading of tea leaves.
But WAR shouldn't be the one all, end all stat, IMO

It is a tool. Used in conjunction with lots of other tools you can make educated guesses on where to spend your organizations resources. It is not an end all and be all of the tools. Simply one of many to help. In the end it’s still guesswork but you can at least be a little wiser with how you spend. |
