08/11/1984 - Kong Plates Five, Athletics Get Road Win, 11-1

The Oakland Athletics bested the California Angels, 11-1, at Anaheim Stadium. Dave Kingman was named player of the game. He was 2-5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Oakland is now riding a 3-game win streak.

Kingman had a big at-bat with runners on 1st and 2nd in the top of the fifth inning, when he hit a 2-run double. The Athletics went on to win.

"We did more than enough to get the win," said Kingman.

09/09/1984 - Indians Raise Rally Flag, Beat Oakland, 8-7

Jerry Willard helped his team muscle past the Oakland Athletics, 8-7. In the game, the Cleveland catcher went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Cleveland reliever Ernie Camacho got the win, raising his record to 5-10. Steve McCatty was tagged with the loss. Cleveland is now 58-86. Oakland is 56-88.

Brook Jacoby was the walk-off hero for Cleveland. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Indians third baseman hit a dramatic solo home run to send the teams home.

09/10/1984 - Victory Pushes White Sox Record to 80-63

The Chicago White Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics, 6-3, in AL action at Oakland Coliseum, with Chicago pitcher Dan Spillner named player of the game. In 7.1 innings, Spillner surrendered 7 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1. He allowed 3 runs. The White Sox bumped their record to 80-63 with this latest triumph.

A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in the top of the seventh inning. That's when second baseman Scott Fletcher hit a single. The White Sox went on to win.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Spillner. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

09/18/1984 - Athletics Bang Out 13-5 Win Versus Texas

Oakland withstood an impressive performance by Texas center fielder George D Wright to defeat the Rangers, 13-5, at Oakland Coliseum. Wright went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3. Tim Conroy got credit for the win, improving to 6-13. He allowed 5 runs on 7 hits in 6.2 innings. The Athletics improve their record to 59-93 with the win over Texas.

Mike Davis put Oakland in front, 9-3, when he took Dickie Noles downtown. His 3-run home run came with two out in the bottom of the third. It was his 19th home run of the season.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Davis said after the game.

09/21/1984 - Athletics Win at Kansas City, 14-5

In baseball, each game is unique. This one was no different.

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Kansas City Royals, 14-5. Earning player of the game honors was third baseman George Brett, who was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Oakland starter Rick Langford was credited with the win after throwing 102 pitches over 5.1 innings. His record now stands at 9-16.

Rickey Henderson hit a bases-clearing double off Mark Gubicza in the top of the fourth, which put the Athletics in front, 7-4. In addition to the double, Henderson had 1 single and 1 walk, while going 2 for 5.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Henderson told the Oakland Gazette.

Oakland now has a 3-game win streak.

09/24/1984 - Kingman, Athletics Slam Rangers in 10-1 Win

The Oakland Athletics got a good effort from starter Bill Krueger in defeating the Texas Rangers at Arlington Stadium. The final score was 10-1. The winning pitcher was Krueger, now 14-13. He tossed 9 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 3 and fanning 2. Oakland is now 63-94, Texas 66-90.

Dave Kingman, who is tied for 7th in the AL in RBI with 105, chipped in for Oakland with a grand slam home run in the top of the ninth. For the game, the designated hitter had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 5 runs batted in.

"We came out aggressive," said Athletics manager . "We came out swinging the bats."

Kong is currently 2nd in Career Strikeouts with 2132.

Reggie Jackson is at the top of the list with 2426. Reggie lost his power in this replay in his early 30's...he only has 400 career homers at the end of 1984 at age 38. IRL he had a total of 563 career homers.

04/15/1985 - Mariners, Henderson Blast Athletics

The Seattle Mariners clobbered the Oakland Athletics, 12-2, at Oakland Coliseum today. Seattle center fielder Dave Henderson was named player of the game for his productive day. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. Matt Young, who went 7.1 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 2 runs on 6 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5. His record now stands at 2-0. Seattle is off to a hot start at 5-2.

Henderson had a key at-bat for Seattle early in the game. With a runner on 2nd, he hit a run-scoring single. It was his 11th hit of the season and gave Seattle an early 1-0 lead.

04/16/1985 - Late Rally by Mariners Seals 4th Straight Win

Seattle right-hander Mike Moore made an effective start against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 3-2 win. Moore, now 1-0, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 2 earned runs. Getting the save was Karl Best, his 1st.

Had Ivan Calderon not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 1st, Calderon hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Mariners.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Calderon.

With their winning streak at 4, the Mariners have raced to a strong start this season.

The Oakland Athletics topped the Seattle Mariners, 10-5, with first baseman Dave Kingman playing a big role. Kingman went 3-4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 6 runs and scored once for the Athletics in the win. Losses have been few and far between for the Mariners so far this season. Their record drops to 6-3.

Kingman had a big at-bat with runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the third inning, when he hit a 3-run home run. The Athletics went on to win.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Kingman told the Oakland Daily News. "It's as simple as that.

The Oakland Athletics topped the Minnesota Twins by the score of 14-3, with the largest share of the credit going to third baseman Mike Gallego. Gallego went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Athletics. The Twins, now 10-9, continue their sluggish start.

Dwayne Murphy, who is a two-time All-Star, aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring single in the top of the third. For the game, the center fielder was 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk, while scoring 2 times.

"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Gallego told a Oakland Daily News reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."

05/07/1985 - Blue Jays Edge Athletics, 10-9

Len Matuszek led Toronto to a triumph over Oakland. The final score was 10-9. The designated hitter went 3 for 5, falling a triple shy of the cycle. He scored 1 run and added 6 RBI. Toronto reliever Luis Leal got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Jose Rijo was tagged with the loss. Oakland, at 8-19, is off to a poor start in 1985.

Matuszek had a game-changing single in the bottom of the 12th. On a 1-0 fastball from Jose Rijo, he banged a run-scoring single to right, giving the Blue Jays a 10-9 lead. It was the 16th hit of the year for Matuszek.

"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Matuszek told reporters after the game.

County Stadium was the site for AL action featuring the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics.

Benefiting from Dave Kingman's productive game, the Oakland Athletics downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2. Kingman was 1 for 2 with a home run and 2 walks, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Athletics. The winner was Bill Krueger, who threw 119 pitches over 6.1 innings. The left-hander was charged with 2 runs on 6 hits.

Kingman had a game-changing home run in the top of the seventh. On a 1-0 slider from Teddy Higuera, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Athletics a 3-2 lead. It was the 6th home run of the year for Kingman.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Kingman. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."

Oakland Athletics starter Rick Langford was in fine form against the Detroit Tigers at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 6-4 win. Steve Ontiveros, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save. Even with the win, the Athletics have a dismal 11-23 record.

Mike Davis had a big 2-run single for the Athletics in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Oakland leading 3-2 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Bill Scherrer and stroked the single to left. It was his 35th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Athletics ahead, 5-2.

Davis expressed little emotion after the game. "Every game we win now," he said, "is one less win we'll need to get in the end.

05/29/1985 - Tigers Walk Off with Win

The Tiger Stadium faithful were treated to a dramatic, walk-off win.

Oakland got a terrific performance from pitcher Chris Codiroli, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Tigers. Detroit won the Tiger Stadium contest, 3-2. Codiroli was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings allowing 2 runs. The winner was Chuck Cary in relief. His record improves to 4-0. Steve Ontiveros took the loss.

Nelson Simmons was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers left fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.

"I was a little disappointed," said Oakland manager . "We could've and should've scored more runs."

The Baltimore Orioles downed the Oakland Athletics, 10-4, at Memorial Stadium. Mike D Young led the way, going 4-for-5 for Baltimore. With the win over Oakland, the Orioles improved to 22-24.

The Orioles got a big at-bat from left fielder Gary Roenicke. For the game, Roenicke was 1 for 1 with a home run, 3 walks, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 9th home run of the season gave Baltimore a 3-0 lead.

The Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics, 13-4, at Oakland Coliseum. The Royals got a fine performance from first baseman Steve Balboni, who captured player of the game honors. He went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. With the win, the Royals have a record of 23-33.

The result might have been different for Kansas City, had it not been for Lonnie Smith. The left fielder produced a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Royals ahead, 6-4. For the game, Smith had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.

"The boys came out and just played their butts off," said Kansas City manager.

The Oakland Athletics racked up a win at Comiskey Park, bumping off the Chicago White Sox, 10-3. Bill Krueger, who started for Oakland, pitched effectively for his team. In 7 innings, Krueger surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 5. He allowed 3 runs. Oakland is 24-40 and Chicago, with the loss, 28-32.

The Athletics got a big at-bat from second baseman Tony Phillips. For the game, Phillips went 2-3 with a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the top of the second, with a runner on 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 35th hit of the season gave Oakland a 1-0 lead.

"I had pretty good command out there," said Krueger.
