Codiroli was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings allowing 2 runs. The winner was Chuck Cary in relief. His record improves to 4-0. Steve Ontiveros took the loss.

Nelson Simmons was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers left fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home.

"I was a little disappointed," said Oakland manager . "We could've and should've scored more runs."

Steve Ontiveros, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save. Even with the win, the Athletics have a dismal 11-23 record. Mike Davis had a big 2-run single for the Athletics in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Oakland leading 3-2 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Bill Scherrer and stroked the single to left. It was his 35th hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Athletics ahead, 5-2. Davis expressed little emotion after the game. Oakland got a terrific performance from pitcher Chris Codiroli, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Tigers. Detroit won the Tiger Stadium contest, 3-2. Codiroli was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings allowing 2 runs. The winner was Chuck Cary in relief. His record improves to 4-0. Steve Ontiveros took the loss. Nelson Simmons was the walk-off hero for Detroit. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers left fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring double to send the teams home. "I was a little disappointed," said Oakland manager . With the win, the Royals have a record of 23-33. The result might have been different for Kansas City, had it not been for Lonnie Smith. The left fielder produced a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put the Royals ahead, 6-4. For the game, Smith had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats. "The boys came out and just played their butts off," said Kansas City manager.
