SP Jeff Frith (24-R) and C Marcell Amici (31-R) were both sent back to Vancouver (A). SP Warren Robilliard (26-R), who was 4-2 with a 3.40 ERA for the Mounties, and 3B Doug Dietz (30-L), who hit .340 in 47 AB, have been called up. Having 3 catchers is pointless when you do not have anyone to pinch-hit for them. I have found myself wishing for a left-handed bat on the bench several times, so Dietz will be that.

San Francisco Seals (28-13 .683 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (16-24 .400 11.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

SF: Ed Blake (26-L 4-3 4.09) vs. POR: John Cox (28-L 1-1 3.07)

Blake is their #1 starter. He has gone 8 innings in his last 2 starts.

Cox won his first start as a Beaver, but pitched better in his 2nd start, though he lost. 6 walks in the first start and none in the 2nd.

That does it for P Blake. 123 pitches. New Pitcher: Bo Travis (29-L) with only 2 innings on the season to face Shannon Kuchta. Kuchta grounds a hit to left! Tie Game: 5 to 5! Craig Petitto grounds out to short... No matter how I build my roster, it seems I always wish I had somebody different on the team... If I still had C Marcell Amici, I could have pinch-hit for Petitto....

Top of the Thirteenth:
New Pitcher: Dick Register (27-L), the last fresh arm in the Pen to face some tough righties... George Cowles leads off with a double to left... The Bullpen is up... With all the injuries to pitchers we needed some more.

Trade #13:
CF Alfonso Garcia (23-S) to Toronto for SP Rex Williams (24-R).

Garcia is one of those no hit, good fielding types. Williams was a 4th round pick this past January. He is 4-4 with a 3.18 ERA for Syracuse (A). He might no be much, but it beats running 34 year olds out there for a last place team....

Trade #14
SS Ivan Guyatt (23-R) to New York for SP Ivan Sanchez (28-L).

Guyatt is hitting .308/.385/.404 for Vancouver (A), but does not have the range I seek in a shortstop. Sanchez is 7-1 with a 1.55 ERA for Columbus (A).

Sanchez was placed on the Beaver roster and Williams was sent to Vancouver (A). Neither is rested enough to start today. If Robilliard stinks it up, as we expect him to, Williams will take his place. SP Ellis Moffitt (34-R) was sent back to Vancouver without ever throwing a pitch for the Beavers.

San Francisco Seals (28-14 .667 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (17-24 .415 10.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

SF: Dave Batts (34-R 3-3 4.02) vs. POR: Warren Robilliard (26-R Major League debut)

Batts pitched a CG win against the Angels last time out, only allowing 1 run.

Robilliard was 4-2 with a 3.40 ERa in 8 starts for Vancouver (A).

OF Jerry Grant (30-L) was sent to Vancouver (A) and IF/OF Franklin Felix (23-R) was called up. Felix was batting .318/.385/.444 for the Mounties.

The Los Angeles Angels are in town to play a short 2 game set and we get the unique distinction of having to play 2 series in a row against the leaders in PCL West. They just won 3 of 4 in Sacramento. We are 1-4 against them on the season and this is the first time they have come to Portland. They are tied for 8th in scoring with 4.45 runs per game (Portland is up to #15 with 3.70!). The Angels are #1 in fewest runs allowed with 3.09 per game (Portland is #6 with 4.23). The Angels have a team ERA of 2.76. The 2nd best ERA belongs to the just departed San Francisco Seals at 3.41. Ours is 3.85.

Los Angeles Angels (29-15 .659 tied for 1st place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (18-25 .419 10.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

LA: Mike Bennett (30-L 5-1 2.81) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (22-R 3-3 2.86) Rookie

Bennett has won 3 starts in a row and the last one was against us when he held up to 2 runs and 4 hits in 7.2 IP.

Johnson only allowed 1 unearned run in 8 IP last time out, but that was not good enough to win. The time before that, he faced these Angels and gave up 7 runs in 3.2 IP.

We are in Denver to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They are coming off a pair of losses in Kansas City. This is our first meeting with them this season. The Bears are 8th in the PCL in scoring with 4.57 runs per game (Portland is 15th with 3.76). Being 8th in the League in scoring when you play your home games at Coors is nothing to be proud of. Of course, neither is being 15th when playing in Multnomah County Stadium.... The Bears are 16th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 5.20 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.38).

Portland Beavers (18-27 .400 12.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (21-25 .457 7.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: John Cox (28-L 1-1 4.12) vs. DEN: San Scott (34-R 3-4 6.28)

I do not like to start lefties in Coors, since it favors right-handed hitters so much, but with 2 lefties in a 5 man rotation and a 4 game series, there is not an easy way to avoid it. Sorry, John. But you'd probably get shelled no matter what stadium we were playing in....

In 9 starts, Scott has only made it past the 5th inning three times, but two of those were here at Coors. He is 2-1 with a 5.54 ERA at home and 1-3 with a 7.41 ERA on the road. Hopefully, today will help correct that split...

SP John Cox (28-L) has been sent back to Vancouver (A) and SP Jeff Frith (24-R) and his 8.64 ERA have been recalled.

Franklin Felix is ready to play, so he will.

No, he won't, because the game has been rained out... We will play a doubleheader tomorrow.

And that means that OF Bill Wilson (28-R) can come off the Disabled List, so he will and Ricky Duarte (28-R) will go back to Vancouver.

The are saying that we can get rookie Fernando Mexicano back on Friday!

We were 12-12 in April, but after 2 of our starting pitchers and our #1 draft pick were hurt, we went 9-20 in May...

LF Fernando Mexicano (20-L) was activated from the DL and OF Sergio Vallejo (26-R) was sent back to Vancouver (A).

SS Juan Rojas (22-S) was sent down to Vancouver (A) and SS Scott Plourde (22-S) was called up.

We are in Oakland to play 3 games over the weekend. We won 3 of 4 here, April 19-22. They just split 4 games in Milwaukee. The Oaks are 8th in scoring with 4.55 runs per game (Portland is still last with 3.77). They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.94 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.51). We had a 3.14 ERA in April, but a 4.99 ERA in May... Starters: 3.53 in April, 5.13 in May. Relievers: 2.54 in April, 4.71 in May. The Bullpen has no injury excuses.

Portland Beavers (21-32 .396 14.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (25-28 .472 10.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West)

POR: Rex Williams (24-R 0-1 5.06) Rookie vs. OAK: John Bremseth (32-R 1-5 5.30)

Williams had to make his Major League debut in Coors Field, so he has excuses for allowing 5 runs (3 earned) in 5.1 IP. But his second start is in the Oakland Coliseum, so there will be no excuses after this one.

We beat Bremseth back in April, but only scored 3 runs in 7.2 innings. He has lost his last 3 starts and has not pitched well in any of them.
