Lightbulb PT Tournaments & Card Collecting Missions explained

Hey guys,

as promised, here is a more detailed write-up about tournaments and card collecting missions. As we are still working on these features, some of what gets described below may still change, but essentially this is what we have planned and partly already completed.

Perfect Team Tournaments

General Overview

Tournaments in PT will be available in all sorts of shape and sizes.

To enter a PT tournament, a user does not have to pay some sort of buy-in, it’s free for all PT users. Users can enter up to three tournaments at the same time.

Most tournaments will start play immediately once the number of teams who have signed up reach the limit of the tournament, at which time this particular tournament starts and another identical one will open for sign-up, similar to online poker tournaments. Some tournaments will have a fixed daily start date (eg 6 PM ET), other (bigger) tournaments will have a weekly start time, eg. Tuesdays at 8 PM ET. We will probably have some tournaments which cater to the Asian and the European market in terms of start time.

Tournaments will have a slightly quicker pace of play, we are currently thinking about having most of them simulate once every 10 or 15 minutes. Some tournaments will likely have a slower, or even quicker pace, we’ll probably experiment here and evaluate the user feedback to see what works best.

Tournaments do NOT pay out PP for achievements. The winner of a tournament (or the top 2 or 4 teams, depending on size) receive a reward in the form of either exclusive cards, exclusive card packs or regular card packs.

Users can access the list of available and signed-up tournaments from the OOTP start screen. You can easily sign up (or cancel) via a click of a button, and once a tournament has started, you can access the tournament via a "PLAY" button which will download the tournament files and enter the PT area, just like regular PT league play.

Tournament Types

We have the possibility to offer tournaments of many different sizes and shapes, eg. normal elimination best-of-1 tournaments, round robin tournaments, or typical MLB playoff style tournaments, or custom ones (for example 32 teams, eliminations style, best-of-3 for each series).

Many tournaments are without restrictions, meaning anyone can sign up and all cards can be used. We call them the “Open Tournaments”.

Some tournaments are with certain restrictions on the cards that can be used. We call them “Special Tournaments”. For example only historical cards, only cards rated 69 or lower (“Battle of the Bronzes”), only cards rated 90+ (“Diamond Club”), or tournaments with a “salary cap” (eg 1800 total player card value).

We will also have different tournaments play in a different era, for example the Dead Ball era, which results in some interesting strategic decisions and a different statistical output than regular PT league play.

Examples

So, putting it all together, here are some possible example tournaments. We should see this as the starting point and we will update this list as we see fit and during development. New tournaments can be added easily after release, depending on demand.

Open QT, 5 different sizes: 8 to 128 teams (in increments of power of 2), (essentially the most basic type), best-of-3, semi finals best-of-5, finals best-of-7.
Open QT Win or Die, 5 sizes, best-of-1 elimination
Special Historical QT, 5 sizes
Special Capped QT, 3 different total card value “salary caps“
Deadball Special Weekly, 128 teams, rules & strategy & stats deadball era, only historical players
Daily Open Win or Die, 512 teams, starts 1 PM ET, best-of-1 elimination
Daily Special Historical WoD, same as above
Weekly Special Historical, 128 teams, best of 7 for all rounds, starts Tuesday 6 PM ET
Weekly Open, 1024 teams (can be increased / decreased after a couple of weeks depending on how these go), best-of-7.
Weekly Open Round Robin, 256 teams, round-robin
Tournaments featuring both DH and no-DH
…. And so on.

Each tournaments has a name and an ID, so the displayed name (for reference in lists) could be something like name “Open QT 64T ID45061“

Prizes

The bigger the tournament, the more precious the final price. For the Weekly Open we will most likely have super rare exclusive Perfect Cards (which can only be won in tournaments and not be pulled from packs) as the price, while small regular tournaments will reward a Regular or Gold Pack to the winner, for example. We will also reward super rare cards in tournaments which have a “salary cap”, so that teams from lower league levels get a chance to win these cards, too. These cards can be sold at the Auction House, of course.

History

The manager history will track tournament participation and results, and for the big tournaments we’ll have little icons for the winners in the team & manager screen, which winning teams can show off proudly.

Future Development

We will continue to work on tournaments for a long time, improving this feature with many new modes and tournament types, for example Qualifying Tournaments for really big events which only run once every two weeks or even monthly. We’re just getting started

Card Collecting Missions

This feature is not as complex as tournaments, so it's easy to explain. Essentially, we will have a new tab in the Collection screen called "Missions". There will be many different missions available, for example "Collect all NY Yankees cards from the 2019 MLB Live Series", or "Collect all First Basemen from the 70's", or "Collect all historical Phillies cards". We will also add more missions over time.

You can check the progress of the missions at any time, and if you have completed a collecting mission, you will be able to "lock" the collection and redeem your reward (this does not happen automatically). The reward is an exclusive or very rare card, probably rated Diamond or higher.

Once you have redeemed your reward, cards from that collection can no longer be quick-sold or auctioned, they get locked to your team (except the card you just "won").

That's it. We are working hard to get these features to you as quickly as possible, and we will update you on the progress in the coming weeks! For the moment we are working on both at the same time, but Collecting Missions will most likely be finished earlier. Thanks for your patience guys!

Let me know if you have any questions

Cheers,
Markus

so you can still play with cards that are "submitted" in collections? that's great

thanks for the update

my only worry is that with new things to do with historical cards now and their relatively low drop rate already it will be nearly impossible to find specific things you need on the market

Yes, you can still play with them, but you cannot sell them anymore. This does not apply to duplicates though.

When the Collection cards are locked, we can still play them on our team?

This is great, thank you! Do the tournament cards have to be on your reserve list and count toward the maximum or will they be on a separate list? Can they be put in the tournaments directly from being inactive?

Will there be a checklist for collection missions? Also, will there be a way to search the AH for just cards needed for the collection (preferably one click nearby the collection mission tab)?

If one card is needed for two different collections, will we be able to use a single instance of that card for both or will we need to have a duplicate? For example, if there is a collection for all live Cardinals and one for all live 1B, will we be able to use the same Goldschmidt card twice?

Thanks so much for this write-up!

Rosters for tournaments are seperate from regular PT league play. For Special Tournaments the AI will set up your tournament roster initially (so that cards which are not permitted to participate do not end up on the roster) and for Open Tournaments the roster of your regular PT team is used initially. You can make roster moves prior to the start of the tournament and between series, just like in the regular playoffs.

Good ideas. I am sure we'll add something like this eventually.

Good question. I do not know yet, but I think the goal will be to have just a single card as a requirement. So you won't need duplicates for different missions.

Will the AI pull cards from the inactive list? For example, if I enter a bronze tournament and all my bronze cards are inactive, will the AI still know what to do?

Is it adjusted in tourny? player's growth in defensive rating?

Player defensive ratings do not change in tournaments.

how about 'already changed defensive rating'?

how about 'already changed defensive rating' by regular season?

for example, I trained 100 Dimaggio in RF and he got 84 in RF already.

Will it be adjusted to tournament?

Won’t open tournaments just serve to widen the gap between the whales and the mortals? Why wouldn’t the top teams routinely win these?

Thanks for the update. This is exciting.

What will happen in a tourney if I don't have a player that qualifies at a position? Currently I don't have a diamond catcher, if it's a diamond+ tourney will I not be able to play, or will it move another position player to that position? Just interested in how that would work.

Will cards that are on our normal 25 man roster be able to be used simultaneously in regular play and in tournaments? To expand on that; will we be able to use the same card simultaneously in multiple tournaments?

I assume there's a limit to the number that you can enter, maybe all the whales will be fighting each other for big prizes that just one gets while the plebs can win other tournaments
