Immediate Ratings Drop
I signed a defensemen from Free Agency who was scouted to level A and was 3 stars for both potential and ability. He kept those ratings after being added to my roster. However, after his first game for the team both his potential and his ability dropped to 2.5 stars.
Is this normal? If so, why would it happen? |

Likely just the updated scouting report catching up with him. The A-level scouting just indicates your scouts can't improve their evaluation of him any more, not that it's perfectly accurate. You don't get the true picture until he's actually on your roster.

But on my roster he appeared with the same ratings as the initial scout reports, it was only after his first game the ratings dropped?

Depending on the exact timing of the signing, the displayed ratings may not update immediately. How long was it between the time he appeared on the roster and his first game?

Ah, it was almost immediate.
I offered him a contract and submitted the offer, he signed straight away (as-in, when I returned to the inbox after submitting the offer I already had the email stating he'd accepted), I dressed him, updated my strategy, and then went straight into a game—this was all on the same day. |

Yeah, that's by far the most likely explanation, then, unless he also happened to get hit with an injury or storyline that changed his ratings, or the game happened the same day his ratings updated and he declined a bit.

so does it ever work the other way? Say you sign a 2.5 rated player...is there a possibility after you get them, they could end up higher rated?

Possible? Yes, I believe it is. Likely? No. However, you can often find guys who with a bit of training will suddenly jump to higher then the potential. For instance I picked up a 1.5/1.5 star defenseman when my depth was getting low, and withing 6 months, he was a 2.5 star defenseman.

Yeah, the scouting error can work in either direction, over- or under-rating the player.
