The series finale in Baltimore. The Rangers have lost five straight and will try to avoid a second straight series sweep. Meanwhile, the Orioles have moved into first place in the AL East.

A rumor has circulated that 33 year old Cubs 1B Tommy Davis wants out of Chicago.

The Phillies have traded 26 year old RF Tom Hutton to the Reds for 31 year old 3B Denis Menke.

The Yankees have traded 33 year old SS Gene Michael and 24 year old 1B Frank Tepedino to the Tigers for 36 year old 2B Tony Taylor and $30,000.

The Orioles have taken advantage of the mismatch for two wins already and it would be an upset if the Rangers do avoid the sweep.

Does any pitcher have worse luck than Don Stanhouse? He has a 1.78 ERA but a record of 0-4.

The Rangers try to change that in the top of the first. Jeff Burroughs gets an RBI single and Frank Howard does as well. Burroughs and Howard are 1 and 2 in team RBI leaders for the Rangers.

Meanwhile, Stanhouse does not give up a hit in the first three innings.

After three: Texas 2 Baltimore 0.

In the top of the fourth, Biittner added a groundout RBI to increase the Texas lead.

In the fifth, Burroughs put a two run shot in the seats as the Rangers lead grew even bigger as that would be the last inning for McNally.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Orioles strang together some hits and then Boog Powell made it a one run game with a grand slam. That would be the last inning for Stanhouse as well.

In the bottom of the sixth, Don Baylor hit a two run homer off Paul Lindblad to give the Orioles the lead.

After six: Baltimore 6 Texas 5.

Kubiak tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the eighth and Tom Grieve gave Texas the lead back with a pinch hit RBI double. Maddox followed up with a 2 RBI single to complete the four run inning.

The Orioles don't die off just yet. They load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but only get one run as Casey Cox comes in to get the final out of the game.

Final score: Texas 9 Baltimore 7.

The Rangers continue their road trip with three games in Cleveland. Texas began the month with a two game sweep of the Indians at home. The Indians have the worst record in all of baseball.

Astros SP Ken Forsch will be lost for the year due to shoulder inflammation.

If all players played to their capabilities, Cleveland would get win number ten on the season.

The Rangers come out with the bats in the first. Dave Nelson gets the scoring started with an RBI single. Alas, the Rangers would ground into a double play in each of the first three innings.

Meanwhile, Rich Hand did not give up a hit in the first three innings.

After three: Texas 1 Cleveland 0.

Nettles tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Frank Howard looked as if he would give the Rangers the lead back with an RBI single in the sixth but Biittner was thrown out at home.

After six: Texas 1 Cleveland 1.

Chambliss ran his hit streak to 14 games as the Indians loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh.

And failed to score!

Don Mincher came in to pinch hit for the pitcher to lead off the top of the eighth and hit his first home run of the season to give the Rangers the lead back. Dave Nelson added an RBI single as did Frank Howard.

Horacio Pina was brought in in the bottom of the eighth to try to protect a three run lead. And he is able to do that this time.

Final score: Texas 4 Cleveland 1.

This trip to Cleveland has been a big boost to the Rangers team ERA as the Indians have scored just two runs in two games. It's easy to see why Cleveland has the worst record in baseball. The Indians are dead last in the AL in runs scored. Today is the rubber match.

The matchups do not reflect the outcomes here as Texas has won three out of four against Cleveland this season despite this supposedly being a bad matchup for the Rangers.

Jeff Burroughs picks up his 20th RBI of the season, bringing home Larry Biittner with a first inning double.

In the bottom of the first, Chambliss extends his hitting streak to 15 games with a bunt single.

Kubiak brought in a run with a second inning single and Biittner added a 2 RBI single.

After three: Texas 4 Cleveland 0.

In the top of the fifth, Kubiak beat out a double play to pick up an RBI.

Chambliss picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to get Cleveland on the board and then Fosse added a pair of ribbies himself as the Indians scored three in the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Nelson stole his twelfth base on the season and then Burroughs brought him home with an RBI single. Dick Billings delivered an RBI single as well and that would send Gaylord Perry to the showers. Toby Harrah added an RBI single as the Rangers matched Cleveland's 3 run fifth with a 3 run sixth.

After six: Texas 8 Cleveland 3.

Biittner added an RBI single in the top of the ninth.

Final score: Texas 9 Cleveland 3.

At least it's not a clean sweep. The Royals are just a game behind the White Sox in West standings. The season series between the Rangers and Royals is 2-2.

A throwing error allowed Biittner to score the first run of the game in the first inning. Burroughs then followed up with a sac fly. Despite the Rangers offensive woes, Burroughs is third in the league in RBI.

Bob Oliver got the Royals on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

Texas got the run back in the top of the third on an RBI single by Frank Howard. But the Royals pitcher put one in the seats in the bottom of the third.

After three: Texas 3 Kansas City 2.

The Rangers loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the sixth. Vic Harris then drew a one out walk to bring a run home. But that is all Texas would get.

After six: Texas 4 Kansas City 2.

The Royals got a run in the eighth as Horacio Pina replaced Bosman on the mound.

But Pina was able to close it out and get the save.

The Rangers battle the odds again as they try to win their fourth straight. The two starting pitchers are a combined 0-5 this season.

The Rangers scratch out a run in the top of the first as Dave Nelson brings home Elliott Maddox with a sac fly.

Freddie Patek led off the bottom of the first with a single to run his hit streak to 11 games. Scheinblum then brought him home with a double before scoring the go ahead run himself on a Mayberry groundout.

A throwing error by Nelson in the third allowed Patek to score for the second time in the game.

After three: Kansas City 3 Texas 1

Schaal added to the Royals lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Frank Howard cut the lead to just a single run with a 2 RBI single in the top of the sixth.

But in the bottom of the sixth, Schienblum added to more RBI with a base hit off of Paul Lindblad. The runs were, however, charged to Stanhouse.

Of course, the lone advantage the Rangers have in the matchups and Scheinblum was the POTG in game two.

Patek led off the bottom of the first with a double to run his hit streak to 12 games. After a passed ball, Scheinblum brought Patek home with a simple groundball out. An error kept the first inning going and Rojas took advantage with a 2 run single.

Burroughs got the Rangers on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

After three: Kansas City 3 Texas 1.

The Rangers begin a stretch of seven home games in six days and fifteen total games in their next thirteen days without a day off. First up is a four game set with the Twins. The Twins have lost four in a row and five out of their last six.

Detroit Tigers 2B Dick McAuliffe reaggrivated an injured hand and will be out at least a week.

Overall not the worst mismatch ever but Blyleven and Carew in particular give the Twins the edge as Minnesota looks to improve its abysmal 4-13 road record.

Maddox led off the bottom of the first with a double and Dave Nelson brought him home with an RBI single. After Nelson stole his 16th base of the year, Frank Howard brought him home with an RBI single.

The Twins got a couple runs in the top of the second on an RBI double by Rich Reese and an RBI single from Blyleven. It was Blyleven's first hit of the year.

Vic Harris got a one out triple in the bottom of the second and Biittner brought him home with a clutch RBI single.

Broberg then left the game in the top of the third with an injury. Mike Paul relieved him. Darwin then tied the game with an RBI single.

After three: Minnesota 3 Texas 3.

Maddox gave the Rangers the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single. And Nelson added an RBI single of his own. After another stolen base by Nelson, Burroughs blasted a three run shot into the stands to complete the crooked number inning. That would be the last inning of the game for Blyleven.

Casey Cox came in to pitch for Texas in the sixth inning and gave up a couple of hits but, thanks to a great throw by Burroughs to get a runner headed for third, no runs crossed the plate in the inning.

After six: Texas 8 Minnesota 3.

Horacio Pina came in to pitch the ninth with the 5 run lead still intact. He gave up two runs but fortunately had a 5 run lead to protect.

Final score: Texas 8 Minnesota 5.

It's very close but still favors Minnesota slightly, mostly because of Rod Carew vs Ted Kubiak. Carew is the only player in this game hitting over .300.

For the second straight game, the Twins pitcher gets an RBI single. Kaat"s ribbie, his first of the season, comes in the top of the second.

Burroughs tied it with a solo home run in the bottom of the second.

After three: Minnesota 1 Texas 1.

Dick Bosman gets his first hit of the season in the fifth inning. But Mitterwald gets his fourth home run ofthe season in the sixth.

After six: Minnesota 2 Texas 1.

In the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Tony Oliva stretched the Twins lead with a two run single.

This time it is the Rangers whom have the slight edge in matchups. A rarity for sure. Both starting pitchers come into the game 0-5.

The Rangers take advantage of an error to score the first run of the game in the first inning. Howard adds an RBI single in the first as well.

Stanhouse allowed just one hit in the first three innings as, once again, he had a shot at getting his first win.

After three: Texas 2 Minnesota 0.

Stanhouse continued to pitch a shutout through six innings.

After six: Texas 2 Minnesota 0.

Horacio Pina was brought in to pitch the eighth after Stanhouse walked the lead off man and Pina kept him from scoring.

The first to men got on in the ninth but the Pina coaxed out a double play groundball. The next batter flew out to left and finally Stanhouse had a win.

This is all about the White Sox and they are clearly the better team.

Gogolewski struck out the side in the first after giving up a lead off single, bringing his K total on the season to 42.

Wilbur Wood struck out the side in the third after giving up two hits.

After three: Chicago 0 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maddox was thrown out at home trying to score from second base on a Dave Nelson single. However, the next batter, Burroughs came through with a 2 run single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Vic Harris got a pinch hit RBI double.

After six: Texas 3 Chicago 0.

This brought Paul Lindblad in to pitch as Gogolewski left after shutting the White Sox out for six innings. And Lindblad immediately lost the shutout and the lead as the Rangers committed two errors and the White Sox scored four runs before Lindblad was pulled for Mike Paul, all in the seventh inning alone.

The Rangers would take advantage of a Chicago error to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Horacio Pina was brought in to pitch the eighth and the White Sox scored a pair to get the lead back. Casey Cox was brought in to finish the inning and two more crossed the plate, all charged to Pina, before the inning was over.

Chicago continued to brutalize the Rangers bullpen as they added a run against Cox in the ninth.

The Rangers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and then Tom Grieve brought in a pair with a pinch hit single. The Rangers scored one more run on a wild pitch before Hal King struck out to end the game.

When you are this big of an underdog, you just can't be giving games away.

Neither offense can get anything going early as Rich Hand does not allow a base runner in the first three innings.

After three: Chicago 0 Texas 0.

The White Sox turn their first hit of the game into the first run of the game in the fourth as Dick Allen collects season RBI #25.

Carlos May added an RBI in the sixth.

After six: Chicago 2 Texas 0.

A passed ball in the seventh brings in Chicago's third run.

A pair of walks helped Chicago load the bases in the eighth and then Ed Hermann got an RBI single and Jay Johnstone added a 3-run triple. That was all for Hand as Mike Paul took the mound. Orta grounded out to bring Johnstone home to complete the crooked number inning.

Jim Shellenback made his first appearance of the season for Texas and got a meaningless 1-2-3 ninth.

The Rangers could be at .500 right now but for having to play the White Sox.

Dick Allen gets a sac fly RBI to put Chicago on the board in the first inning. Bill Melton followed up with a solo home run.

In the bottom of the second, Tom Bradley struck out Dick Billings. It waa Bradley's 60th strikeout of the season.

Pete Broberg struck out Dick Allen in the third to record his 40th strikeout of the season.

After three: Chicago 2 Texas 0.

Tom Bradley added to the Chicago lead with his bat as he stroked out an RBI single, his first RBI of the season, in the fourth inning. Pat H Kelly followed with a 2 run triple and then scored on a wild pitch.

The rout continued in the fifth as Hermann added a 2 run double and Broberg was pulled for Mike Paul.

The Rangers stranded runners at second and third in the sixth as their scoreless streak reached 15 innings.

After six: Chicago 8 Texas 0.

Jim Shellenback came in to pitch for Texas in the seventh.

Bradley struck out Biittner in the eighth to reach 10 Ks for the game.

Casey Cox was brought in to pitch the ninth as Chicago added another run. Then Horacio Pina came in to get the final out of the frame.

It's close but overall the advantage actually belongs to Texas for once.

Maddox gets the offense going right away with a lead off double to start the game and Biittner followed right up with his own double to score Maddox. Nelson then singled up the middle to bring Biittner home.

Meanwhile, Bosman was perfect through three to get his ERA back below 4.

After three: Texas 2 Minnesota 0.

An error helped Minnesota get on the board in the fourth.

After six: Texas 2 Minnesota 1.

Paul Lindblad was brought in to pitch the ninth and he blew the save as the Twins sent the game into extra innings.

After nine: Texas 2 Minnesota 2.

Lindblad would then walk three batters, one intentional, to load the bases in the tenth and the Twins would score the winning run on a passed ball to send the Rangers to their fourth straight defeat.

A four game losing streak. Two of the four blown by the bullpen. And, now, RP Casey Cox is telling reporters that there is too much fighting going on in the clubhouse. And another loss to the Twins today would drop the Rangers into the cellar.

The difference in yesterday's pitching matchup and today's flips the overall advantage to favor the Twins.

The Rangers are now meeting the low expectations they were supposed to meet as this 5 game losing streak has dropped them to last in the division. They have two more to play in Minnesota before they head home.

With Gogolewski on the mound, it should be just enough for the Rangers to end their losing streak.

Burroughs got the scoring started in the first with an RBI single but the Twins got a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it.

Maddox put Texas back on top with an RBI single in the top of the second.

After three: Texas 2 Minnesota 1.

In the top of the fourth, Goltz recorded his 20th strikeout of the season, punching out Gogolewski. But the very next batter, Maddox, hit a 2 run homer. It was Maddox's first homer of the season and brought his RBI tally up to 10.

The Twins went to the bullpen in the sixth, bringing Jim Perry out to pitch.

To lead off the bottom of the sixth, Gogolewski struck out Steve Braun. It was the 20th time on the season Braun struck out and 50th strikeout for Gogolewski.

After six: Texas 4 Minnesota 1.

The Rangers brought in Paul Lindblad in the eighth and the Twins had Tom Norton pitch the ninth.

Maddox recorded his 10th stolen base of the year in the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Lindblad got his 10th K ofthe season when set Rod Carew down on strikes.

Final score: Texas 4 Minnesota 1.

The makings of a new rivalry? The two former Washington teams (the Rangers and the Twins) find themselves not only tied in the standings but, after six head-to-head meetings, tied 3-3 in their seasonal series. They end their four game series in Minnesota today.

Almost as even as the season series with a very slight edge to Texas.

Rod Carew struck in the first inning with a 2 run triple.

Meanwhile Dick Woodson, who came in with an ERA over 7, was perfect through three.

RichHand got his 20th strikeout out of the season as he punched out Steve Braun to lead off the bottom of the third.

After three: Minnesota 2 Texas 0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Bucky Guth hit a 2 run shot, his first homer and first RBIs of the season.

Burroughs led off the fifth with a single to give the Rangers their first base runner of the game.

After six: Minnesota 4 Texas 0.

The top of the seventh saw a 66 minute rain delay and saw the Twins bring in Tom Norton with a runner on first and two out. That runner, Dave Nelson, would steal second to record his 20th stolen base of the year.

Casey Cox came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh for Texas.

In the top of the eighth, the first two Rangers reached base so the Twins pulled Norton and brought in Wayne Granger.

Mike Paul then pitched the bottom of the eighth for Texas.

Dave LaRoche came in to close out the ninth for the Twins and did so.

Final score: Minnesota 4 Texas 0.

The winner for most disappointing team of 1972 so far is easily the Oakland Athletics. The team that was supposed to win the World Series is, instead, 5 games below .500 and just 1 game ahead of the last place Rangers. The Athletics came to Texas for four games, beginning with a double header today.
