An Alternate Baseball History (OOTP 21)

Once OOTP 21 comes out, I will be publishing a new hands off dynasty that will start with the 2020 season. I know a lot of people will be looking into something Astro related, so I'm definitely encouraging others who were thinking of doing something similar to post as well.

In this world, Rob Mamfred decided not to give the Astros players immunity, and every player who participated in the 2017 and 2018 season (except Tony Kemp) will be retired/banned from baseball. This dynasty will chronicle the Astros attempt to rebound with most of their active roster removed and try to return to their former glory.

I won't play as a team in this league, but will keep it going until the Astros win their second world series. All the settings will be kept as the default from the standard game. It won't be an everyday thing (likely), but the reports will cover a wider period of time. I'll likely highlight their Opening Day roster each season, draft classes, and any big transactions they made.

Here's the link to the players that were retired/banned:

The Beginning

As I mentioned before, I'm starting up a new dynasty detailing an alternate baseball history where Rob Mamfred decided to ban each member of the 2017-2018 Houston Astros (even Mike Fiers) after their scandal. I initially planned to make this a slow moving dynasty, but now that Covid-19 has moved the remainder of my college semester online, I'll probably have a lot more time then I want (need) to play out of the park. Below is a list of all the players that will be retired before the start of the 2020 season.

2020 Houston Astros

As you can see below, this is an entirely different team. The pitching staff is almost devoid of any sort of talent. The only good player has to be Zack Greinke and Jose Urquidy looks okay at best. The pen is awful, as Joe Biagini is currently listed as the closer. The outfield isn't terrible, as Yordan Alvarez is a total stud and Michael Brantley doesn't suck too bad. He's super underrated in my opinion, but he's going to hit a ton even if he can't play defense. Aledmys Diaz is the only other player worth mentioning. The farm has just one top 100 prospect, the #17 prospect Forrest Whitley who should be a future ace. Urquidy is just outside the top 100 at 102, and fellow major leaguers Bryan Abreu and Abraham Toro are 157th and 158th. No matter how you look at it, the Astros are in for a rough season. The one bright spot is they have $186 million for free agents and $236 million for extensions as their payroll fell to 29th in the league at $52,570,167. I expect them taking on a lot of salary during the season and they'll likely add free agents as well.

I'll start simming part of the season tomorrow and include any seasonal updates on interesting transactions, draft results, and more. You can take a look at the preseason predictions as well.

I definitely considered that, but with no official statement from the MLB (and there likely won't be one for a while) I decided that I'd let them stay. Even though the Red Sox are probably my least favorite team lol

June 2020

Record: 25-35 (5th, 9.5 GB)
New Acquisitions: SP Trevor Cahill, SP Aaron Sanchez, SP Ervin Santana, RP Derek Holland, RP Eduardo Jimenez, RP Kyle Lloyd, RP Dan Otero, RP Jacob Rhame, RP Connor Sadzeck, CL Luis Avilan, 2B Tyler D. Smith, 3B Yairo Munoz, and RF Yasiel Puig

The Astros remade almost their entire pitching staff, but none of the guys they added are really that good. Aaron Sanchez has the most talent of the bunch, and he's a decent filler arm for the rotation. He's 3-2 with a 4.43 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. Luis Avilan has slotted into the closer role, working to a 3.10 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 18 strikeouts with 5 saves in 20.1 innings. Eduardo Jimenez (2.30 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, 14 K) has been an excellent middle relief option and Connor Sadzeck (2.87 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 14 K) has a nice ERA, but inflated WHIP due to his 5.7 BB/9.

On the offensive side, they added Yasiel Puig to the lineup, but he's been awful so far. He does have 11 homers and 26 RBI's, but he's hitting just .205/.273/.405 with 60 strikeouts in 200 at bats. Yordan Alvarez has really been the only productive regular, hitting .279/.359/.571 with 19 homers and 39 RBI's. They have a surprise contributor in 1B Taylor Jones, who's hitting .263/.332/.516 with 12 homers and 29 RBI's.

It seems to be a long road to recovery for the Astros, but they will definitely be ready to spend in the offseason. I'd assume they won't be too active on the trade market, but the AI always does surprising things.

The draft is right around the corner, but the game doesn't have the real life draft order. I will manually select their 1st and 2nd Round pick and then retire that player to make it as if those picks were taken away.

August 2020

Record: 46-63 (4th, 20 GB)
Notable Acquisitions: SP Mike Montgomery, SP Spencer Turnbull, CL Pedro Strop, 2B Jurickson Profar, LF Hunter Pence, and CF Starlin Marte

While the Astros were losing a ton of games, they were very active on the trade market in June and July. The first move was picking up Jurickson Profar from the Padres for 3B Abraham Toro and minor league LF Austin Dennis. They upgraded their bullpen with Pedro Strop, who they acquired from the Reds for minor league C Jose Alvarez. They grabbed Starlin Marte from the Diamondbacks for a pair of pitchers in Blake Taylor and Orlando Pascual. They swapped two minor leaguers in RP Jake Kalish and LF Gabe Ricones to the Royals for a decent looking SP prospect Jojanse Torres. Lastly they made two upgrades to their rotation, adding swingman Mike Montgomery from the Royals for minor league CF Yefri Carillo and RP Willy Colado as well as picking up Spencer Turnbull and minor league SP Keider Montero from the Tigers for SP Jose Alberto Rivera. Of the players picked up, just Strop and Profar are rentals, the rest will be here at least next season.

On the field, the Astros boast three 20+ home run hitters in Yordan Alvarez, Yasiel Puig, and Taylor Jones. Garrett Stubbs has a 108 OPS+ and has been a dependable option at catcher. Montgomery has only made one start with the Stros, but he was 11-3 with a 2.89 ERA (167 ERA+), 1.21 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 109 innings with the Royals. Zack Greinkie and Alvarez represneted the Astros at the All Star game and Forrest Whitley was selected to the future's game.

The draft didn't treat them well, as not only were they without their first two picks, the AI decided to only select starting pitchers. 3rd Round Pick out of Vanderbilt Ethan Smith looks like a future big league starter, but they have yet to work out a deal with him. 4th Rounder Thomas White did sign and he does look to have a future in a big league rotation. They did select a lefty in the 17th Round Joe Sheridan who goes to my college, but that's really all that is notable about him. 7th Rounder Sam Thoresen ranks 22nd in the system and 8th Rounder Angelo Smith ranks 26th. 6th Rounder Danny Zimmerman, a two way player, ranks 20th.

End of 2020

Record: 71-91 (4th, 29 GB)

The Astros finished with their worst record since 2014 and their offense was bottom five in the AL in every category except strikeouts, steals, and base running. The pitching was bottom 6 in each category. There were better signs in September, as they went 15-10 for their best month of the season.

There were some individual bright spots, as Yordan Alvarez had one of the better seasons in the league. He hit .272/.349/.499 (123 OPS+) with 39 homers and 94 RBI's in his first full big league season. Taylor Jones was a nice rookie surprise, as the 26-year-old hit .245/.329/.469 (110 OPS+) with 30 homers and 87 RBI's. Zack Greinke was the most effective starter, going 9-10 with a 4.49 ERA (108 ERA+), 1.19 WHIP, and 168 strikeouts in 170.1 innings. Forrest Whitley handled his first taste of big league action well, going 3-2 with a 3.59 ERA (135 ERA+), 1.29 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. He made 6 starts and 4 relief appearances. Brandon Bielak may turn into a piece for the future, as the 24-year-old was 2-3 with a 2.75 ERA (176 ERA+), 1.04 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts in 39.1 innings spread across 6 starts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Minnesota Twins to finally win their elusive title. 1B Max Muncy was named World Series MVP.

The Astros started the offseason with a budget of $266 million (5th) and a payroll of just under $62 million (27th). Taylor Jones finished 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting. They lost RP Dan Otero, RP Luis Avilan, 2B Jurickson Profar, LF Michael Brantley, RF Yasiel Puig, CL Pedro Strop, RP Trevor Cahill, SP Aaron Sanchez, and RP Sam Dyson to free agency.

Looking at the available free agents, here's what looks like to be the best of the bunch:

2B D.J. LeMaheiu
SP Marcus Stroman
LF Nelson Cruz
LF Marcel Ozuna
SP Trevor Bauer
RF Nick Castellanos
SP Kevin Gausman
C Kurt Suzuki
SS Marcus Semeien
SP Jake Odorizzi
SP Mashiaro Tanaka
1B Daniel Murphy
SS Didi Gergorious
CL Liam Hendricks

I'm expecting the Astros to be very active this offseason, and will cover the offseason in one post with any transactions separated by month.

2020-2021 Offseason

I'll do a monthly recap of the moves the Astros make during the offseason:

November

Signed 2B D.J. LeMahieu to a 5-year, $124,000,000 contract
Signed SP Rick Porcello to a 3-year, $25,500,000 contract

The Astros wasted no time this offseason, quickly signing a pair of free agents just a few weeks after free agents file. The 32-year-old LeMahieu hit .292/.345/.449 (110 OPS+) with 20 homers and 66 RBI's in his final season with the Yankees. Did that warrant him all the money? Maybe not, but the Astros have a ton of money to spend and DJ is still an elite defender with a ton of talent. Porcello on the other hand was signed more to eat innings as the rotation needs a lot of help. He did have a good season with the Mets, going 8-11 with a 3.83 ERA (110 ERA+), 1.22 WHIP, and 156 strikeouts. As of now, DJ will bat third and man second while Porcello sits atop the rotation as Grienkie has seen his ratings decline significantly and he won't be able to pitch for 7 more months.

December

Signed LF Marcell Ozuna to a 6-year, $118,800,000 contract
Signed SP Drew Smyly to a 1-year, $1,120,000 contract
Signed SP Homer Bailey to a 1-year, $1,120,000 contract
Signed C Kurt Suzuki to a 2-year, $17,000,000 contract

The Astros continued to be busy as they signed another big name free agent in Marcell Ozuna. He'll be taking a ton of money home after signing a 1-year deal with the Braves. He hit .294/.347/.512 (125 OPS+) with 34 homers and 112 RBI's in a really impressive season and he definitely earned his contract. In this world he's a decent fielder too, so that is an added benefit to his value. Smyly had a decent season with the Giants, going 3-13 with a 4.18 ERA (102 ERA+), 1.38 WHIP, and 129 strikeouts in 21 starts and 12 relief appearances. Bailey on the other hand was excellent for the Twins, 5-9 with a 3.64 ERA (135 ERA+), 1.30 WHIP, and 115 strikeouts in 18 starts and relief appearances. Neither pitcher is very talented, but both put up solid numbers and could be worth a shot. Lastly, Kurt Suzuki is a shockingly dependable catcher (3.5 stars!). He hit .271/.340/.466 (104 OPS+) with 19 homers and 68 RBI's in his second season with the Nationals. He's great in the clubhouse, which makes up for average to below average defensive ability. Ozuna is scheduled to bat cleanup with Suzuki following him. The two pitchers are currently in the pen, but Grienkie won't pitch Opening Day and I don't expect Crisitian Javier (current #5) to make the team.

January

Signed RP Brandon Workman to a 1-year, $6,700,000 contract

Only one big league singing this month, as the Astros bolstered the pen with former Boston reliever Brandon Workman. He had two stints on the DL, but still pitched 40 innings with a 2.92 ERA (160 ERA+), 1.63 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts. He's likely tabbed for middle relief.

March

Signed RP Carlos Alejandro Ramirez to a 1-year, $880,000 contract

Nothing big as the offseason winds to a close. The only move for the last two months was signing a fringe major leaguer in Carlos Ramirez. He was with the team last season as well.

On to 2021!

Opening Day!

The Astros look to have a much better season, as they are predicted to finish 81-81, good for third in the American League West. They have one top player, slugger Yordan Alvarez, who they think will hit .270/.374/.577 with 50 homers and 115 RBI's. The farm system ranks 15th, with Forrest Whitely (9th) The only top 100 prospect. I'd assume the 23-year-old will graduate this season, mostly because he's better then every other starter they have. The only other guy in the top 200 is Brandon Bielak who ranks 159th. After this season, they will have no more draft pick restrictions and they may be able to draft some actually talented players. Last year's 8th Rounder Angelo Smith is their #4 prospect with 4th Rounder Thomas Wilhite the only other draftee in the top 10, where he ranks 7th.

The pitching staff honestly looks worse this year then last. Jose Urquidy is the only holdover from last season, and he's set to pitch Opening Day. The bullpen is desolate, with Yohan Ramirez and all 9 (out of 100) of his control set to do the closing. The lineup is much better then last year and actually pretty decent. The 2-3-4 of LeMahieu, Alvarez, and Ozuna is definitely formidable with a decent 5 in Kurt Suzkui. Not much behind that, but at least Alvarez has a little support this season.

June 2021

Record: 24-26 (3rd, 1.5 GB)
Notable Acquisitions: SP Michael Wacha, RP Darren O'Day, and RP Corey Taylor

The Astros actually held first place for a little bit, and we're up to five games above .500 in a really weak AL West. They now sit just 1.5 games behind the 26-25 Oakland Athletics.

Yordan Alvarez has absolutely raked this season and is putting up MVP numbers. The soon to be 24-year-old is hitting an extremely impressive .322/.427/.732 (197 OPS+) with 19 homers and 45 RBI's (a 62 HR, 146 RBI pace) while appearing in all 50 games so far. Brandon Bielak is the only Astro starter producing, and the rookie is 4-2 with a 2.61 ERA (191 ERA+), 1.00 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts in 62 innings. Setup man Brandon Workman is pitching well as well, working to a 1.23 ERA (406 ERA+), 1.30 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts in 14.2 innings. This year's random breakout player has been RF Chas McCormick. The 26-year-old was a 21st round pick back in 2017, but is hitting .374/.427/.551 (156 OPS+) with 3 homers, 5 steals, and 22 RBI's.

A pair of big name free agent signings in DJ LeMaheiu and Marcel Ozuna have had rough starts to their Astros career. DJ is hitting just .219/.283/.328 (61 OPS+) with 6 homers and 21 RBI's. Ozuna is hitting slightly better, .223/.264/.383 (68 OPS+) with 9 homers and 33 RBI's. Both have negative WAR's and negative zone ratings at their respected positions. Homer Bailey was struggling in the rotation (8.24 ERA, 60 ERA+) and has moved to the bullpen while being replaced by another struggling pitcher in Drew Smyly (6.33 ERA, 79 ERA+) Jose Urquidy and Rick Porcello both find themselves on the DL, but they should be back in the next week.

As crazy as it may seem, the Astros have a chance to make the playoffs this season, and while they don't have the prospect capital to fuel a run, they do have a lot of salary room. Should be an interesting couple months for the new Astros.

Clever concept. Would've been nice to see gutless Manfred in real life take away their championship. But we do have to remember, that he does suck up to the owners(and basically works for them). Good luck with this. Solid read so far!!

August 2021

Record: 49-53 (4th, 4.5 GB)

Just 4 and a half games out of first, the Astros still find themselves in the division hunt as August begins. The Angels (53-45) hold a 2.5 game lead over the Mariners (52-52) and a three game lead over the Athletics (51-52). Texas (46-56) is in last, 7 and a half out of first. It was disappointing to see the Astros fail to make a single trade as well.

This will be the Astros last season without their first two picks as well. They didn't have a third or fourth either, as they lost them when they signed DJ LeMaheiu and Marcel Ozuna. Their first pick was in round five, where they took SP Elijah Trest, who doesn't seem to have any MLB future. They took their first position player since the sim started in round 6, 3B Daniel Corona Jr. 7th Rounder, SP Aaron Davenport is rated the Astros 18th best prospect, 9th Rounder, SP Cole Pervical, is 26th, and 10th Rounder, SP Garrett Brown is 28th.

Daniel Norris, who joined in the offseason on a minor league deal, has become the Astros best starter. He's currently 6-4 with a 3.53 ERA (136 ERA+), 1.10 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts. The rest of the current rotation has been pretty average, but a lot of the guys they have kicked out like Homer Bailey and Drew Smyly did awful. Blaine Hardy (162 ERA+) has been one of the few bright spots in the pen, but he doesn't really strike anyone out. Yohan Ramirez has struck out an impressive 17.8 batters per nine, but a much less impressive 7.9 walks per nine. He does have 19 saves and a 118 ERA+. Brandon Workman fell apart and is now out for the year, and the Astros have cycled through a lot of pen arms.

Both Kurt Suzuki and Yordan Alvarez started the All-Star game this year. Alvarez is having a great season, hitting .301/.392/.620 (163 OPS+) with 30 homers and 80 RBI's. Suzuki is hitting .312/.375/.518 (134 OPS+) with 12 homers and 40 RBI's. Chas McCormick is having an excellent season as well, but the Astros haven't given him nearly enough playing time. He's got into just 60 of 102 games this year, despite hitting .361/.426/.537 (154 OPS+) with 5 homers, 9 steals, and 31 RBI's. LeMaheiu finally brought his OPS+ up to 101 and he's hit 15 homers with 49 RBI's. Ozuna has still been a below average hitter (86 OPS+), but his 21 homers and 65 RBI's are still pretty solid.

End of 2021

Record: 76-86 (4th, 12 GB)

The Astros improved on last year's total, finishing year two 76 and 86 and 12 games behind the first place Angels. The New York Yankees, who had the second best record in the AL, but had to play the Red Sox in a play-in Wild Card game, ran through the AL and met last year's champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. They dethroned the reigning champions and won 4 games to 2 for their 28th World Series Championship. This is the Dodgers third World Series loss in five seasons.

Back to the Astros, team MVP would have to be Yordan Alvarez. The young superstar hit .296/.385/.606 (158 OPS+) with 46 homers and 121 RBI's and was worth almost 6 WAR (5.9). Fellow All-Star Kurt Suzuki finished the season with a 119 OPS+, 23 homers, and 65 RBI's. After an awful start to the season, DJ LeMaheiu finished they year with a slightly above league average bat (102 OPS+), 22 homers and 81 RBI's. Marcel Ozuna was slightly below average (99 OPS+), but hit 36 homers and 113 RBI's. Chas McCormick got more playing time down the stretch, and finished with a .317/.394/.467 (129 OPS+) batting line. He stole 10 bases, hit 10 homers, and drove in 52 RBI's in a solid rookie season.

On the mound, April signing Michael Wacha was the best of the bunch. With Houston, he was 13-7 with a 4.05 ERA (119 ERA+), 1.24 WHIP, and 153 strikeouts. Brandon Bielak had a decent rookie year, finishing 10-10 with a 4.64 ERA (103 ERA+), 1.22 WHIP, and 144 strikeouts. He also lead the league with a .261 BABIP. The pen definitely had their struggles, but first year closer Yohan Ramriez finished with a 3.71 ERA (130 ERA+), 28 saves, and 101 strikeouts. His K/9 was an impressive 17.8, but his BB/9 was a much less impressive 7.6. He only allowed 24 hits in 51 innings.

The Astros start Free Agency with a payroll just under $70 million and over $66 million to spend on free agents, not including the $80 million they already have offered. There are a lot of holes that need filling, especially in the rotation where a dependable option is truly lacking. The outfield and right side of the infield are set, but a new catcher, shortstop, and third basemen are needed for sure. There is a need to upgrade the bullpen, but it's a secondary need at this point. They have a lot of money to spend in what looks like a really solid free agent class headlined by the still elite Max Scherzer and 3B Nolan Arrenado, who for some reason wasn't considered a top free agent.

2021-2022 Offseason

December
Traded CF Stephen Wrenn and RF Jordan McFarland to the Milwaukee Brewers for C David Freitas
Signed C Salvador Perez to a 1-year, $11,600,000 contract
Signed SP Daniel Norris to a 1-year, $990,000 contract

Starting with the trade for Freitas, the Astros were obsessed last year with starting Wrenn over Chas McCormick, but they then decide to move him and a prospect (who's not any good) for backup catcher David Freitas. Freitas hit .250/329/.393 (91 OPS+) with 8 homers and 34 RBI's in 313 plate appearances. If they didn't sign Perez a few days later, this trade would've made sense, but Wrenn is an excellent defender and Freitas isn't really anything special. It's not a bad deal, but one that doesn't really make much sense in hindsight. Not a big fan of the Perez signing either, as his ratings have really declined, although there is no such thing as a bad one year contract. He's currently there nine hitter. Norris rejoined the Astros and gives them some pitching depth.

January
Signed RP Joe Kelly to a 1-year, $2,880,000 contract
Signed RP Mychal Givens to a 1-year, $2,920,000 contract
Signed SP Clayton Kershaw to a 2-year, $39,200,000 contract
Signed SS Freddy Galvis to a 3-year, $21,300,000 contract

Here's something we'll never see in real life: the Astros signing Clayton Kershaw. Now, this isn't the same Kershaw we are used to in real life. He partially tore his UCL in June, and his numbers were already down. He was 7-4 with a 4.44 ERA (94 ERA+), 1.17 WHIP, and 86 strikeouts in 77 innings after a 2020 that saw him 13-7 with a 3.94 ERA (106 ERA+), 1.26 WHIP, and 167 strikeouts in 157.2 innings. But, even in this downgraded form, he's by and large the Astros best pitcher and will anchor the rotation. Year two is a player option, so this may be a one-year trip, but it's definitely a good investment. They also shored up the pen with Kershaw's former teammate Joe Kelly and Mychal Givens. Givens looks to close with Kelly setting him up. Givens was just average last year, but Kelly (despite being worse ratings wise) had an excellent year. He had a 3.15 ERA (132 ERA+), 1.25 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitching out of the Dodgers pen. Lastly, the Freddy Galvis signing fills their shortstop hole with an excellent defender who won't kill you with the bat. With the Phillies in 2021, he hit .270/.319/.407 (95 OPS+) with 12 homers and 74 RBI's. Galvis will man short and hit 7th.

February
Signed RP Kevin Shackelford to a 1-year, $920,000 contract

The Astros were basically dormant in February, signing righty Kevin Shackelford on the first of the month. He had a decent season with the A's, going 4-5 with a 3.68 ERA (123 ERA+), 1.60 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts in 51.1 innings. He's not a start by any means, but definitely a reliable enough middle reliever. I was hoping the Astros would do more, as they still have $100 million to spend and I feel like they could have added two or three more top players.
