09/21/1985 - Red-Hot Hill Scorches White Sox

Donnie Hill really sizzled at the plate in today's 8-6 win over White Sox. The Oakland shortstop blistered Chicago for 5 hits in 5 at-bats.

"Hill was too tough to get out today," the White Sox skipper said in the postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too."

Donnie Hill hit an RBI single in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, doubled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

For the year Hill is batting .288 with 85 hits and 7 home runs. He has scored 30 times and driven in 29.

09/28/1985 - Kingman Hits 2 home runs in Athletics Win

Oakland first baseman Dave Kingman was a significant contributor in his team's 6-2 triumph over the Chicago White Sox. He was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 runs and drove in 4 for Oakland. Oakland is now 70-85.

Kingman had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the sixth. On a full count changeup from Dan Spillner, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Athletics a 4-2 lead. It was the 38th home run of the year for Kingman.

Kingman attributed the win to "energy and focus on the part of everyone."

1985 Final - Kingman .224/.304/.444 38 HR, 105 RBI

Kong put up big numbers again in the 1985 replay, and passed a slew of HOF'ers on the career HR List. He was 3rd in the AL in homers, behind Ron Kittle (46) and Mike Young (41).

04/10/1986 - Twins Roll to 11-2 Win Over Athletics

The Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland Athletics, 11-2. Earning player of the game honors was third baseman Gary Gaetti, who went 2-2 with a double and 3 walks. He scored 3 runs. The Twins have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 1st win in 3 games.

The Twins got a big at-bat from center fielder Kirby Puckett. For the game, Puckett went 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the third, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Minnesota a 4-2 lead.

04/13/1986 - Angels Win at Oakland, 10-7

The California Angels topped the Oakland Athletics by the score of 10-7, with the biggest share of the credit going to third baseman Doug DeCinces. DeCinces went 2-5 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Angels on the day. Mike Witt picked up the win, improving his season record to 1-1. He struck out 4 in 7.1 innings. The Angels have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 1st win in 6 games.

DeCinces had a big at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, when he hit a run-scoring single. The Angels went on to win.

04/25/1986 - Mariners Lose, 13-4, at Oakland Coliseum

The Oakland Athletics overcame a good performance by Seattle right fielder Phil Bradley to knock off Seattle, 13-4, at Oakland Coliseum. Bradley went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Oakland starter Moose Haas was credited with the win after throwing 112 pitches over 9 innings. His record now stands at 3-1. At 12-5, the Athletics have played well so far.

Carney Lansford, who is tied for 3rd in the AL with a .382 batting average, helped out the Oakland cause in the bottom of the second inning with a 2-run double. For the game, the third baseman went 1-2 with a double, while adding 2 RBI.

04/29/1986 - Athletics Come Back Late to Top Brewers

Benefiting from an exceptional performance from Tony Phillips, the Oakland Athletics defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-4. Phillips was 1 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4 for the Athletics. The Athletics, now 15-5, have played some good baseball in the early going.

Phillips had a big at-bat with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth inning, when he hit a grand slam. The Athletics went on to win.

"I was able to barrel up some pitches," said Phillips.

05/10/1986 - Red Sox Subdue Oakland, 4-3

Boston Red Sox starter Steve Crawford was in fine form against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 4-3 win. In 8 innings, Crawford surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 3. He allowed 2 runs. Bob Stanley earned the save for Boston, his 7th of the year.

The Red Sox got a big at-bat from second baseman Marty G Barrett. For the game, Barrett was 2 for 5 with a double, while adding 3 RBI. In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a bases-clearing double. His 9th double of the season gave Boston a 3-0 lead.

"We'll relax tonight and get back after it tomorrow," Crawford said after the game.

Boston starter Bruce Hurst pitched effectively against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum. The left-hander led his team to a 9-3 win. Hurst went 6.1 innings to notch the win. He scattered 3 hits, walked 2, and struck out 10. His record improves to 4-2. Losses have been few and far between for the Athletics so far this season. Their record drops to 21-11.

The Red Sox got a big at-bat from left fielder Jim Rice. For the game, Rice was 2-5 with 2 doubles. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. In the top of the first, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run double. His 6th double of the season gave Boston a 2-0 lead.

Toronto Blue Jays starter Dave Stieb was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Oakland Athletics, 4-3. Stieb went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 6. His record improves to 2-4. Toronto is now 15-19. Oakland is 22-13.

Kelly Gruber, who is tied for 3rd in the AL in extra base hits with 18, aided the Toronto cause with a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth. For the game, the designated hitter went 2-5 with a double.

05/26/1986 - Tigers Slip Past Oakland, 9-8

Detroit beat Oakland at Tiger Stadium, eking out a 9-8 win. The win was due in large part to third baseman Darnell Coles, who earned player of the game honors. Frank Tanana got credit for the win, improving to 3-4. He allowed 8 runs on 13 hits in 9 innings. Even with the win, the Tigers have a dismal 11-32 record.

The Tigers were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when center fielder Kirk Gibson turned a 0-2 fastball from Steve Ontiveros into a 3-run home run. The walk-off home run sent a roar through the crowd and gave Detroit a thrilling 9-8 win.

06/04/1986 - Athletics Edge Tigers, 8-7 on Kingman Walk Off Homer

The Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics cranked it up at Oakland Coliseum.

The Oakland Athletics topped the Detroit Tigers by the score of 8-7, with the largest share of the credit going to left fielder Jose Canseco. Canseco was 2-4 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 5 runs and scored once for the Athletics. Oakland reliever Jose Rijo picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Bryan Kelly absorbed the loss.

Dave Kingman, who is tied for 10th in the AL in RBI with 37, chipped in for Oakland with a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth. For the game, the designated hitter had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI.

"There's nothing like the buzz of a walk-off win," Canseco said.

The Cleveland Indians beat the Oakland Athletics, 9-4, at Cleveland Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Pat Tabler, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3-5 with 3 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Tom Candiotti earned the win to go to 8-4. He allowed 3 earned runs on 9 hits, with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. The Indians go to 27-30, putting them 4th in the AL East Division.

The Indians got a big at-bat from left fielder Joe Carter. For the game, Carter went 1-5 with a triple, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run triple. His 2nd triple of the season gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead.

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Cleveland Indians, 12-5, at Cleveland Stadium. Oakland right fielder Mike Davis was named player of the game for his superb performance. He went 3 for 6 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 5. Bill Krueger was the winner. Over 8.2 innings, he allowed 5 runs on 4 hits, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. The Athletics have an impressive 36-23 record.

Davis had a key at-bat for Oakland early in the game. With the bases loaded, he hit a 2-run single. It was his 68th hit of the season and gave Oakland an early 2-0 lead.

Texas right-hander Kevin Brown made an effective start against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 4-2 win. The Rangers bumped their record to 36-26 with this latest triumph.

In his 128-pitch effort, Brown allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits over 9 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 7.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Brown said.

The Texas Rangers got a superb performance from second baseman Steve Buechele, but the Oakland Athletics still won the game, 7-5. Buechele was named the player of the game despite the loss. He went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Steve Ontiveros was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 21 of 23 save opportunities. The Athletics bumped their record to 41-29 with this latest triumph.

The Athletics got a big at-bat from left fielder Jose Canseco. For the game, Canseco went 1-3 with a home run and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. In the top of the first, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 30th home run of the season gave Oakland a 2-0 lead.

"I still think this team has room for improvement," Canseco told the Oakland Times.

Oakland starter Curt Young clamped down on the Kansas City offense, while his team sailed to a 11-2 win. Young went the distance for Oakland. He gave up 2 earned runs on 7 hits. Oakland is now 43-31, while Kansas City is 42-31.

It could have been a different outcome for Oakland, had it not been for Tony Phillips, the 27-year old second baseman . Phillips contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the fourth inning to put Oakland up, 2-0.

"I had pretty good command out there," said Young.

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Oakland Athletics, 5-4, at Exhibition Stadium. Toronto designated hitter Kelly Gruber earned player of the game honors with an outstanding performance. He went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. Oakland has now lost 5 straight.

Toronto's win came gift-wrapped. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied, Kelly Gruber reached on an error by the 3B, driving in 1 run.

The Toronto Blue Jays did just enough to sneak past the Oakland Athletics, 6-5, at Exhibition Stadium. Toronto pitcher John Cerutti earned player of the game honors. Oakland has now lost 6 in a row.

Kelly Gruber was the walk-off hero for Toronto. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Blue Jays designated hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Cerutti.
