The Chicago Skyhawks

The Chicago Skyhawks

The Chicago Skyhawks have announced the hiring of 38-year-old Curt Schilling to serve as the club's GM moving forward. In a shocking turn of events legendary GM Biff Pocoroba has told the club he will not accept another role with the team and is moving on.
“The goal here is to build a perennial champion. Fostering an environment where anything short of a world series appearance the players and more importantly the fans view as a disappointment.” The new GM stated.
“From here to there is a long road but with a mental reset organization-wide it can be done. From travel to the draft, every detail matters and every person on every staff will know that.”

The Skyhawks enter 2040 with just 1 playoff appearance in their 20-year history. Schilling does inherit the leagues #1 rated farm system.

The Pitchers

(Note) No DH in this league, 9v9! I will play every game on offense, allow the AI to manage the defense. I'll get a quick league history up but I am going to try harder this time around to stay focused on the team as much as I can and make the players people you get to know.

Chicago Skyhawks 40 Man Roster

Antonio Almodovar LHSP 26Yrs 3rd overall pick 2032 out of St Central Murray HS.
6'1” 195 Lifetime 37-38 with a 4.40 ERA. Should be way better. Definitely one of the starting 5, just not sure where yet. 2 years away from FA and earning a paltry 2.64m. Lots of time to see where this one can go, but a solid start.
92-94 With 2 dominant breaking balls and a great FB. Could be a huge innings eater. Scouting director Nick O'Connell likes him even more than the OSA scouts.

Chris Brown LHSP 23Yrs 4th overall pick 2037 out of Indiana State.
6'1' 205 Lifetime 5-5 11 Saves 4.99. He appears to have bounced back and forth from the pen to the rotation last year which will not happen again. Huge arm. Another of the starting 5, 2 lefties too! (follow this aspect)
95-97 with a wipeout change. His CB is way behind development-wise but across the board he's considered a future 1. Hard worker but many question his baseball IQ.

Keith Feldmann LHSP 24Yrs 65th overall pick in 2036 out of Ohio State
6'5” 210 Lifetime 1-3 4.93 in just 49 innings. Got a cup of coffee last year. He's an extreme GB pitcher who works in the mid 90's. Questions abound, mostly good. His stuff grades out as 3++ pitches with a devastating hook. But the question is actually how much he wants it. Salt of the earth kid who could be a 2 or a swingman. He'll be arbitration-eligible after this season. Not sure where he fits right now. With a great spring maybe he cracks the rotation. Still has all 3 options.

Tyler Hendricks LHSP 27Yrs 9th overall pick in 2033 out of Oklahoma State
6'2” 205 Made 2 starts last year with a 2.77. Another mid 90's GB pitcher but at 27 he clearly hasn't developed as our scouts thought he would. His intangibles scream “trade me!”. Scouts, trainers all agree he has zero work ethic, hard to coach and has no real sense of the game. Likely a piece of trade bait if we can make someone like him more than we do.

Eric Molstad LHSP (That's 5!) 32Yrs 5'11” 195 Acquired in a deal with Indianapolis 7 years ago. Low 90's lefty. 81-93 4.90 in 237 career starts. 1456 IP with below-average peripherals (1.41 WHIP).
Making 1.9 in the final year of his contract, set to become an FA after this season. Has yet to miss a start in his career and only tossed less than 197IP 1 time (180.2 in '38)
Probably a guy who is undervalued a little bit but not someone I envision being around when this thing is entering final build stages. A career .259 hitter!

Javier Oliva RHSP 21Yrs Discovered in Venezuela in 2035. The crown jewel of the Skyhawk organization and the #1 rated prospect in the game. No idea why, but he's been rushed. Brought up and given 4 starts last year to the tune of a 9.28 ERA. He's not ready but when he is lookout. Will touch triple digits in the late game high leverage situations. Works pretty consistently 97-99. Mixes one of the games best fastballs with a legit hook and split that are still developing. An option will be burned this year as he is nowhere close to ready. Likely should start in AA but we will see how it plays out.

Ken Schlitt RH SP 29Yrs waiver claim from San Diego last year. 6'2” 200lb starter who defines that AAA player. Can't stay out of the zone enough for his off-speed stuff to work. He's on a 1 year deal for league minimum so no worries. Another guy I'll likely let spring play out for as you can never, ever, never have enough pitching.....

Alex Trevino RHSP 27Yrs 66th pick in 2033 out of Miami U. 6'2” 195 who keeps the ball on the ground with mid to high 90s stuff including an excellent cutter. Went 4-8 34 Saves 3.99 just 2 years ago but lost the job and moved into a setup role last year and had a great season going 7-3 1 Save 2.93 in 47 games over 58.1 IP. He'll likely stretch it out in camp but he's one of the pen guys as of now. Will be a FA after this season.

Arvid Udo LHSP 27Yrs 5th overall pick in 2034 out of South Alabama. 6'6” 225-pound power lefty with a swing and miss split and slider to go with the upper 90s fastball. Underwent TJ surgery this April and will start the season on the IL. Not likely to be game ready until late season at best. Another arm that appears to have been rushed. The stuff is there though.

Beau Crowder RHR 28Yrs 348th overall pick out of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sundburg HS in 2030. A beast at 6'8” 230 pounds and he backs that size up with a 100mph fastball and an outstanding curveball. The stats don't match the talent. I like him in a later innings role. FA after this season.

Ricky Cueva RHP 24Yrs Acquired in a trade with El Paso in 2037. A mid 90's 'swingman' of sorts. Could open, could start and could setup and close. Mid 90's fastball to go with one of the better splits in the game. Stats say he's a middle man at best.

Brad Denz RHR 28Yrs Minor League FA 6'4” 225 pounds. RH sinkerballer who works mid to upper 90's with a great curveball. Bouncing back and forth from AAA to the PBL. This guy was the 1st pick of the 3rd round in 2030 and literally disappeared for 6 years before becoming a minor league FA. Not really sure what we have here.

Chris Driskell RHR 26Yrs Acquired in a trade with Indianapolis in 2036. Low 90's righty. Had a decent season last year (1-0 3.80 in 45 IP over 25 relief appearances. Looks to be a 'tweener' sort of arm. Arbitration eligible after this year.

Pedro Sauceda RHR 26Yrs 450th overall pick in 2032. 6'4” 205 pounder. Works low 90's and can start and relieve. Another “filler' for now. Be nice to find someone with interest in a few of these guys like this.

Chris Turner RHP 27Yrs Waiver claim 2038 from San Diego. Former Texas Longhorn who I want to get some starts this spring. Went 8-9 4.10 in 30 games, 21 starts last year. 4+ pitches with a fantastic heater and a splitter that could be lethal. Works upper 90's and keeps the ball in the air.

Franklin Velez RHR 25Yrs Signed out of Venezuela 2031. 6'5” closer in waiting. Diagnosed with a UCL tear in July and will start the season on the DL. Works the upper 90s when he's healthy.

David Hernandez Closer RH Signed out of Venezuela in 2030. 6'3” 195 pounds. Works mid-90s and I am not sure why or how this closer mess became part of the mix. 4-10 25 Saves with a 7.19!! last year. A WHIP of 1.92. He has 2 dominant pitches but shouldn't be anywhere near the 9th inning until his control improves.

The position players

POSITION PLAYERS

CATCHERS

Aldo Castelli (25yrs 43 days service making league min.) Smart Signed out of Venezuela just 22 plate appearances. It looks like he may be ticketed for the AAA job. Very good defender.

Marciano Granda (27yrs 3yrs 11 days 910K arbitration-eligible after this year) Waiver claim 136g 11 HR 72 RBI 280/357/424 slash line last year. Will likely be the opening day catcher. Above-average across the board defensively.

Jason Miller (31yrs 5yrs 124 days 676K FA this winter) 10/13/9 Trade with Memphis 2032 .266/.379/.340 in 417 games 1168 AB's. 4 HR 122 RBI. We are going to let him walk this winter.

Luis Robles (30yrs 4yrs 112 days 240K FA after this season) Trade with Indy. Hit .321/.391/.411 in 36 starts after being acquired (.258/.333/.383 combined 4 HR 20 RBI) As of now ticketed to back up.

Miller was the only LHH in the group but nowhere near talented enough to warrant a back up job. As of today if I was predicting, Granda will start and Robles will back up with an eye to finding a potential backup LHH.

INFIELD

1B Ron Merz Switch 29 3yrs 169 days 780 Arb eligible 2040
Below average defender at just 1 position. Career .295/.361/.499 with 74 HR 261 RBI's in 524 games. Coming off a down year (.259/.333/.449) after 2 consecutive good seasons in which he hit 46 HR's and drove in 158. His bat is legit but he's a DH in a league without the role. Worse comes to worst he's my 1B and will need a late innings replacement but this is not a position you want to have to do that.

1B/2B Chris Ross RH 24 13 days Min
One of the games fastest and best baserunners who is an elite defender at 1B and 2B. September call up last year but got just 7 AB's so it will be a huge spring for him

1B/2B Heath Hirsch RH 3yrs 50 days 226 Arb eligible 2040
Another elite defender at both 1B and 2B but without Chris Ross' speed. Little more offensive upside than Ross and one will have to go. Be a great spring battle to watch. Career .260/.321/.376 in 391 games with 23 HR 155 RBI's.

2B Aaron Maynard RH 33 10yrs 98 days 3.48m through 2042
An elite bat with outstanding speed and instincts but scouts say his range is non-existent. As good as they come turning two and if it hits his glove it stays there but a weak arm and next to no range as a RH bat, and 33 years old. Career .309/.359/.379 in 1256 games with 1353 hits, 233 2B 60 3B 51 HR and 465 RBI. 298 SB in 389 SBA. Signed through 2042 at 3.48m per. 2032 SS winner and All-Star

2B/SS Mike Smith RH 27 1yr 82 days Min
RH hitting middle infielder who plays a marginal short. 1st round pick (22nd overall) 9 years ago. Elite runner with elite speed. Last year was his first full season in the PBL and he hit .216/.313/.351 in 134 starts (145 games). 28 2B 6 3B 10 HR 63 RBI to go with 42 of 49 in stolen bases. Another RH bat.

2B Mike Wright RH 24 23 days Min
Hit .321/.415/.461 for the AAA Iron Pigs last year before a September call up. A very good defender with some of the game's quickest hands and as good a gloveman as there is. Problem? He has the speed of a 46-year-old backup catcher. Will get on base. Definite potential to be around opening day and manning 2B. In 132 AAA games, he's hit .324/.420/.479 with 19 HR and 89 RBI 76 Ks and 77 BB

3B Ken Evans RH 31 9yrs 23 days
2nd overall pick in 2027 out of Bay Ridge Prep and the 2031 PBL Rookie of the Year. A 5-time all-star and 2-time silver slugger he leads the Skyhawks all-time in hits, 2B, HR, RBI, and WAR. Heading into the final year of an 8-year contract that he's absolutely lived up to. Next to TJ Hand probably the most popular player in Skyhawk history and someone whose national reputation is outstanding. While no one will tell him this, not that he doesn't know anyway, he's a defensive liability to the extreme. Coming off his 2nd 200 hit season and has posted an OPS of .800+ every year of his career. I would very much like to get him signed to a 'final contract' that keeps him here for the remainder of his career. For his career in 1408 games, he has hit 177 HR's, driven in 930 with a career slash line of .326/.398/.502/ He has just 613 career strikeouts to 627 career walks.

3B Abraham Fernandez RH 32 74 days Min (FA this winter)
Has pounded AAA pitching the past 5 years but with Evans in his way and him not being able to move out of 3B (where he is a below-average defender) it might be time to find a partner for this guy. If he hit LH I'd likely make him almost untouchable given my dearth of RH hitting. Let's see what the league thinks his value is this winter.

SS/1B Luis Alvarado Switch 28 62 days Min (FA this winter)
Just the 2nd NON RH hitter. A well above average SS coming off a monster .366/.434/.449 AAA season last year. He's the rare switch hitter in that he doesn't appear to have a weak side of the plate. He will get a good long look this spring, maybe even try to get him some 2B and 3B innings.

SS Roberto Morales RH 29 6yrs 152 days 2.52m (FA this winter)
The Skyhawks starting SS since 2034. His highest season average .262 and OBP high of .336, both in 2034. He is absolutely an elite defender which I assume is why he's been their guy. His contract is up this winter, and I have yet to look at the market. I don't imagine he'll be very interested until seeing what the open market brings, but that won't stop me from chatting.

OUTFIELD

LF/CF Justin Davis LH 25 53 days Min
Big time pop, outstanding defender and elite base runner. Problem is he's going to K a ton and likely not walk a lot. Hard to get him to adjust his game, but again as a LH bat right now he has a leg up.

LF/RF/CF Pamphile Pininferino Switch 25 1yr Min
Already a favorite due to his name alone. Taken in the Rule 5 from NY last year. His first full season was a resounding success hitting .299/.401/.443 in 145 starts and 562 AB's. 30 2B's 15 HR and 63 RBI's to go with just 89 punch outs and 94 walks. Stole 34-50.
He can hold his own vs LHP but is a middle of the order bat vs RHP.
With almost 30 million in room on the payroll, I've quietly extended him an offer that would go into his 1st year of FA. (BTW the league changed the FA rule, players only need to accrue 5 years to become FA.)

LF/CF Jon Gonzalez RH 28 2yrs 93 days Min (signed through 2044)
A very good defender in Left and Center, RH bat with some speed. Should be better by now. Our scouts repeatedly talk about all of his offense skills being well 'above' average but it hasn't shown itself in the numbers. Signed out of the Dominican in 2027. He's signed through 2044 so we'll keep working in hopes he breaks out. Well above average speed too.
Career numbers 736 PA .271/.338/.435 25 HR 87 RBI and 34 SB.

CF Joe Mabry RH 29 5yrs 6 days 4.04m (FA this winter)
Gold glove CF who will likely hang out in the 2 or 8 hole depending. An elite defender with supreme contact ability and well above average speed combined with being an elite base stealer. He's a free agent this winter as well as being a compensation eligible one.
Career he has hit .313/.343/.428 with 109 2B 26 3B 24 HR with 232 RBI's. Stolen 129 of 164. 233 K's to just 85 walks.

CF/RF/LF Mario Mejia LH 21 114 days Min
2040 Skyhawk starting CF. At just 21 he will be one of the youngest players in the game. He's already an elite defender with GG potential. Has great offensive potential. Won't hit for power but will get on. Hitting LH is a huge plus. In 74 games last year he hit 319/.354/.395 stealing 29 of 39. The 14 BB is a concern but I don't expect that to change much. 45 punchouts can be dealt with. Even better is the fact he's a leader at that age.

RF/CF Raul Clinton RH 31 1yr 31 days Min
If he could hit even a little he's a keeper. Elite defender at both positions, elite baserunner and base stealer, amazing work ethic. Outstanding zone discipline but just cannot make consistent hard contact. He's a clubhouse guy who everyone looks up to. Career-wise he's a .219/.314/.290 in 214 PA. He'll likely ride the AAA/PBL shuttle should he still be around at the end of camp.

RF Jeff Davis LH 32 3yrs 83 days 216K Arb eligible
A very good bat offsets average defense in right (but he has a bazooka for an arm) with below average speed. Had a very good year (.317/.387/.493) in 129 games (80 starts). Another guy hitting from the LH side which puts a premium on him until we can get more balance organization wide. He'll goto Arbitration this winter. At 32 I would like to keep him but I would JUMP at the opportunity if someone else saw big value.
Hitting .299/.372/.468 in 916 career plate appearances. 29 Hr's 143 RBI's. 120 K's to 95 walks is a good ratio.

RF Ricardo Gonzalez LH 28 3yrs 155 days 270K Arb eligible
Biggest power bat in the organization right now. Picked up off waivers last winter. He's a slow, below-average defender but has an outstanding work ethic and is a big part of this team chemistry wise.
Has 49 career HRs in 801 PA. Averages 21 HR 63 RBI per 162 games. Career hitting .241/.341/.477. Cannot hit left-handed pitching but hammers guys from the right side. Arbitration eligible.

The first offseason and a look back

11/1/39 Skyhawks, Pininferino agree to an extension.
Pamphile Pininferino and GM Curt Schilling stood astride the podium to announce the club and player agreeing to a 5 year 5.825 million dollar contract extension. Coming off a rookie year that saw the 25 year old hit .299/.401/.443 with 15 HR 63 RBI and 34 SB he was elated.\
“Who doesn't want job security? Yes, I might have 'left some money on the table, but who's to say that the table will be there in 2 years, 4 years or 5? I believe in myself and I am proud that Mr. Schilling and the Skyhawks do as well.”
“To be able to sign Pam to an extension of this length, at this price is an enormous step forward for this franchise. He's a 25-year-old who we believe is headed for stardom. He can do it all in addition to being a switch hitter with no weak side he brings so much else to the park for us. We look forward to this young man doing many great things on and off the field here in Chicago.”

BACKROOM CHATTER
This buys out arbitration years at an incredibly good price if he stays healthy, and there's no reason to think he won't. Not to mention getting his 1st free agent year at that price we felt was a steal. He has what this franchise wants as we head into a new direction with a steadfast resolve to bring in and keep great players who are great people as well. The roster is 25+ spots and each spot you can nail down with a definitive player who is talented is one less concern as we head into arbitration and this years winter meetings.

Arbitration is in 4 days and we are making a gamble. We have 3 comp eligible players.
Joe Mabry is a no brainer. He receives the 4.24m qualifying offer at the same time we will talk about an extension if there is financial realism in the talks.
C Jason Miller w are letting go.
SS Roberto Morales is where we are rolling the dice. The 29 year old SS is looking for more years and more money than I want to give a light hitting 29 year old. Having said that in an effort to rebuild this entire thing if he accepts we keep a solid everyday elite defender at a priority position and if he does not we will get the pick, something we will work hard to stockpile.

A quick look back at the Skyhawks first 17.
Going to take a post to set the playing field, literally.
The Skyhawk franchise was born on April 1st 2023. The first of two expansion teams awarded by the PBL (the other being the Las Vegas club).
In the 17 years of existence the club has been nothing short of dismal. 2030 saw them win the first, and only division title where they were promptly swept out of the first round.
I'm going to give you a number, and see if you can guess what it stands for.

That is closest this club has ever been to 1st place with the 2030 exception. And for what it's worth that was the only other season the club finished higher than 4th place! In 17 years the 'Hawks have 1 1st, 1 3rd, 1 4th, and 14 5th place finishes!
So to say this is a troubled franchise is an understatement.
So why did I take the job?
Two reasons really.
The first? Owner Rodolfo Segura. The 76-year-old oil tycoon is a GM's dream. Very patient man who lets his smart people do what he pays them to do.
He's always been generous with his budget, he NEVER interferes in the day to day baseball operations but he expects to win now.
This year soon after I accepted the job I was told the following.
“I've been patient, and that is not likely to change. But I want a roots up change in every aspect of the baseball operations moving forward. I want this club to expect a world series appearance or be disappointed. I know that will take time, but I have some short term goals to start the journey.
First I want this team to be as close to .500 as possible. I want an offense with more, much more, power. I want our attendance to climb. I want that miserable bastard, who I am paying way too much at 2B gone (Aaron Maynard, more on that to come). And by your third year here I want people to see a playoff on the horizon. Priorities this year? Get as close to .500 as you can and make it so I don't see that prima dona at the teams family night prior to the all star break. I believe in you, now get it done.”

I won't ever have issues playing for anyone, working for anyone, that lays down their expections with no holds barred. This year he wants me to be .500, or close to it. So my goal will be to build something I think can win 82 games, at least, without forfeiting a single piece of the puzzle in building a perennial contender. He wants Aaron gone. This is a bit more troubling because Aaron Maynard, while not well liked at all in the clubhouse (even worse it's no secret around the league) has got 3 years left at 3.48m per. He's been a legitimate offensive presence but apparently something went awry last year and thing have never been cleaned up. His glove makes him a liability and at 3+ million I see getting rid of him, short of releasing him, is going to be hard.

The second reason I took this job? #1.... That's the Chicago Skyhawks ranking in minor league talent. Heading into the off season we rank 1st and have the games #1 prospect in SP Javier Oliva. His late season cup of coffee last year was a huge mistake in my opinion but we'll deal with it. In addition we have 9 of the top 200 prospects in the game. SP Matt Diamond (22, #8) CF Jon Boisjolie (22, #14) 2B Mike Wright (25, #25) SP Damian Mendoza (19, #42) SP Nate Weide (20, #77) CF David Robledo (24, #100) 2B Ruben Rocha (19, #110) and SP Steve Rivera (21, #143).

My goal is to get to camp with all of these, and a few more, still in the organization.

We head into the off season with a 67m dollar budget and a low payroll. We have over 20 million in free agent money and much more than that in potential extension funds.

My first official act as GM was to inform the scouting director our new budget would go from 2.4 to 3.25 million and our player dev budget from 1.92 million to 2.5 million. I've come to believe if you have the right people in place not a dime of that money ever goes to waste.
'
While I am eager to bring in 'my own people' there are pieces here I think I need to give a chance. Certainly scouting director Nick O'Connell who is signed through 2041 deserves to keep his job.
I have managed to convince the legendary Curt Conboy to come back as my “assistant”. I reached out to a friend in Owen Aiken, one of the games most respected pitching minds, and offered him a 4 year deal behind the scenes. I didn't want the current staff to know if it didn't happen but he was eager to come on board and was hired the next day. Those were the only changes. Manager Blake Word will get a year to prove himself (the final year of his deal fwiw) and I did not touch the minor league coaching staffs. I want a year to see what they are made up and get a feel for where we can fix or improve.

11/11/39
Hawks, Pininferino agree on long term deal.
OF Pamphile Pininferino and GM Curt Schilling announced the signing of a 5 year 5.825 million dollar contract extension for the young rising OF.
“With the change of FA in the CBA I felt it prudent to be pro-active in Pam's case. It took almost no time and I think we both feel good about the results.”
“Bro, I mean come on! I'm 25, and I just banked 5 million bucks! What's not to love? No I can just kick back and play some ball, win some awards and let the ladies swarm....”\

In addition to being a stud who is only getting better this deal is a huge coup for us. I got 2 years of arbitration and a FA year under contract for a pittance of what I expect this kid to be worth in 5 years. He's a Venezuelan by birth but grew up on the surf in San Diego. Not hard to tell I know. But he loves this city and he loves this team.

11/14
The Arbitration gamble was a loss. Morales accepted the offer so we got him for one more year. I shouldn't say loss because he is an absolute monster in the field and our defense is a key focus of this rebuild.
Joe Mabry, on the other hand, did NOT accept his offer, became a FA and we will get a compensation pick should he sign elsewhere.

11/16
We had 16 automatic renewals take effect today. No real surprises.

11/17
Owen Akin accepts a 4-year deal at 105k per and current PC James Beebe refuses another role in the organization and will move on.

11/19
Former GM Curt Conboy accepts a 3-year 3.51m dollar contract offer to become the assistant GM.

11/24
Hawks deal 1B Merz, Closer Hernandez to Dallas.
The Chicago Skyhawks and Dallas Bulls announced a 4 player deal this afternoon that saw Dallas sending 29 year old 1B Ron Merz and 25 year old Closer David Hernandez, as well as 22 year old minor league P Rafael Cartaya as well as their 2040 4th round pick. In return Dallas sent 28 year old 1B Ian Drewes, their 2040 1st and 2040 3rd round draft picks.

Ok so let me explain. Merz is a below-average defender with a power bat at 1B who is likely to command around 1m in arbitration. At 29 I feel like the tools are what they are. I'll let everyone else call Hernandez a “closer” but anyone with an ERA over a touchdown is a reliever and a mop-up at best. You know the saying “one mans trash....”.

Drewes is better in every quantifiable way except the money. He's in year 3 of a deal that has a player opt-out in 2040. A well-above-average defender with a big-time middle of the order bat. He's a potential batting title guy with 20+ HR power, 350+ OBP and 30+ 2B's. He also making 3.28 million this year and is set to make 4.16 the next 2 seasons should he not opt-out. I look at this as a win-win. If he opts out I have the money for a FA, if he opts in I have an outstanding corner bat that hits left-handed (one of the most important parts of this deal btw). Cartaya was not someone Dan was high on at all so that was an easy inclusion as I tried to drive up the price on what felt to me like an urgent effort to dump salary. I stated coming in, amassing picks is a huge piece of what I want to do and I got a 1st and 3rd for a 4th, an insane return.

Going to work diligently to get some of the extraneous parts of this 40 man on the block and see who wants what. Looking for prospects 1st, above average big leaguers who teams may be looking to move and I'll even hit up a veteran making some money if he's A) A legit top of the rotation arm or B) An above-average defender with a top to middle of the order bat upside.

12/3
Chicago sends Fernandez to Las Vegas
The Hawks sent 32-year-old 3B Abraham Fernandez to the Rollers and received 24 yr old relief pitching prospect, Jose Juarez, in return.

Abraham has been on the AAA/PBL shuttle what seems like his entire career. I felt I owed it to him to try and move him somewhere he could get a shot. With Ken at 3B for the foreseeable future, it was not going to happen here because of his limited 3B defense and his inability to play anywhere else.
Dan and his scouts were high on Juarez as a future back end pen arm so we didn't get stingy.

Schilling shaking up Chi-Town, acquires Aguayo in 5 player deal.
In what could be called the 1st 'Big move” in his new job as the Skyhawk GM Curt Schilling acquired 30-year-old starting pitcher Angelo Aguayo (and the remaining 3 years 16.4 million dollars of his contract) along with minor league OF prospect Nick Horton, the Prospectors 3rd and 4th round picks in 2040 for 25 year old Catcher Aldo Castelli, minor league third basemen Alex Sanches and Cameron Stanton as well as the Skyhawks 3rd and 5th round 2040 draft picks.

This was the move to wake everyone in the organization and every Skyhawk fan alive up. Bottom dwellers don't pick up a 5 million dollar SP while trading prospects and their likely backup C away. Aguayo has zero off the field concerns, he takes the bump consistently every 5th day and he can be a legit solid #2 on a winner. And for what it's worth his contract is not cement laden should things go awry and we find ourselves at the deadline being a seller.
All 3 players we dealt will find themselves in A, AA or AAA with SF and that's fine. Both kids at 3B are pure 3B and neither has a ceiling we should be afraid of parting with (so says our scouting director). This was absolutely a 'win now' move but the picks and a 'sleeper' in Horton made this a bigger move than most may thing at first glance. Horton is a 25 year old solid corner OF, plays both sides and plays them well, who hit 34 homers and drove in 116 in AAA last year with a slash line of .336/.434/.588 in 129 games over 588 PA.
He will have a legitimate shot to crack the opening day roster.

Also managed to snag Miguel Alvarado as our new bench coach.

12/11
Skyhawks kick it in gear, land reliever Montes for 3 years 14.145 million
In a bullpen bereft of left handers GM Curt Schilling 'fixed' what he called 'that gaping chasm in the pen' by inking 32 year old 3 time all star and the EL's Reliever of the Year in 2037 to a 3 year deal. The lefty immediately becomes top dog in the Hawks search for a closer since dealing their 2039 choices. “I don't like 'rebuild' or 'retool', there's enough talent out there to build a team that can win more than it loses and it's my job to find those pieces. Ferdinando is a perfect fit both on and off the field”

Yet another win now move, sort of. I needed a left hander to the tune of “overpaying' if I had too. I don't know that I did here as I think this is a legit elite closer should that be the role he ends up with. He saved 36, 31, 25, 38 from '34 to '37 for Detroit. He's a power left handed arm in a bullpen full of righties. He may even end up a high leverage guy exclusively. I was out there on three different lefties and all three were 30+ and seeking AAV's north of 4. the other two fell apart the same day this one came together. I was honestly hoping to get 2 of them.

12/13
RULE 5 DRAFT
One thing you rarely see a team bent on winning is rule 5 draft activity. In a twist of fate a player we liked and knew might be available, was.Joey Altrip is another left handed bat who plays RF and LF as an above average defender, he's a potential 50 SB threat and he can hit. He hit 30 HR's between A/AA in 2038 and 30 last year at AAA while posting a .374/.515/.631 slash in 108 games over 558 PA. An OPS of 1.146 deserves a look for sure. I don't know that Boston has that much depth but I don't care. Obviously he has to stay on the roster and I think he has more than enough talent to do that this year. I love the potential of this move.

1/28
Once the pre-season hits I placed Franklin Velez and Arvid Udo on the 60 day to open up 40 man spots. It's going to be a big time challenge to pare down the roster to 25 if everyone stays healthy and is as good as I hope they are. Udo is then activated in February, just prior to camp and will have a shot at the rotation in ST.

SPRING TRAINING
A very successful camp at 17-13 with no major injuries. RP Keith Feldman gets hurt mid month and will start the season on the DL, helping to ease the pressure on what now might be a crowded bullpen of talented arms.
Ken Evans had a monster spring hitting 4 HR 21 RBI with a .371 avg and 1.117 OPS.
Nick Horton and Jeff Davis were tied with 3 HR each to come in 2nd for the spring. The Aaron Maynard 'issue” became larger. He and manager Blake Word apparently had some issues and Aaron was “hurt” most of camp, getting in just 12 at bats (1-12 2B). This is something that needs to be addressed, sooner rather than later.
Catcher Marciano Granda had a great spring hitting .367/.461/.500 over 60 AB's.

On the mound the starters all took their turns, almost everyone stayed healthy.
Starters ERAs ranged from 3.55 (Brown) to 4.67 (Aguayo).
The bullpen sorted itself out with a combination of performance and options available. Part of cut down I do hate. Top prospect Javier Oliva sported a 0.59 over 15.1 IP with 13 K's to 5 walks. Trevino and Sauceda both had real good camps. Trevino I expected and think he's part of the final mix, Sauceda I didn't expect that from and he's out of options, so some work to be done.

As we were about to break camp I had to call a quick press conference....

Skyhawks acquire Closer Nestor Diaz from Tucson.
Chicago announced today that they had acquired 29 year old closer Nestor Diaz and a 5th rounder from Tucson for OF Justin Dennis and a 6th round pick. Diaz was the PBL leader in saves last year with 45. Apparently the club could not reach a deal on a long term extension and rather than lose him for a pick Tucson managed to find a partner in Chicago. 25 year old LF Justin Dennis was thought to be in the mix for the opening day job after his 30 HR season in AA/AAA last year but with no options left and a crowded field, literally, for the job the clubs were able to match up.

Dennis was not ever truly in the mix as a LF only. Yes, he has light tower power, he's only 25 but I think we have more talented options availble now, and down the road. Diaz is a gamble, but not much of one. A great clubhouse guy he's a legitimate closer in every way. Unliker Tucson we are 100% ok with “just getting the pick” if we can't find a way to keep him here. Not to mention the fact that the 3.4 he is making is well below market for a guy that can lock down 50+.
He also brings a great veteran presence. I think people are now sold on the fact it's “Win or Go Home” from here on out in Chicago.

SCHEDULE- 3 @ Long Beach 3 @ San Diego 1 @ FTW

Sunday- CHI 5 LB 4 (10)
W-Diaz (1-1) L-Felipe (1-2) Chris Brown came out after 5.1 IP, no diagnosis yet but he was grabbing the elbow. Drewes ties it with a 2 R 2B in the 9th, Artrip wins it with a solo shot in the 10th.
POTD- Michael Valentine (SAN) 3-5 2B HR 6 RBI
Monday- CHI 8 LB 4
W-Udo (2-0) L-Rolland (0-1) POTG Ken Evans 3-6 HR 3 RBI Maynard 3 SB
POTD- Marcus Loyd (TUC) 4-6 3 HR 3 RBI 4 R
Tuesday- CHI 1 LB 0
W-Molstad (2-1) 6 IP 3 H 3 K POTG L-Ruf (3-1 1.97) S-Diaz (4) Velez, Diaz 3 IP 1 H 5 K Evans 1st inning RBI 2B wins it.
POTD- Seth bin Ali (FW) 2-3 2 HR 4 RBI

The win didn't alter a somber clubhouse. Young superstar Mario Mejia dove for a ball in the 7th and didn't get up. Replays showed his left knee buckled when he fell. No word yet.
To add even more bad news to the mix is this: Our #2 P Prospect in AAA, Matt Diamond, came out of a game last night with a 'sore shoulder'. MRI's revealed a torn labrum! He's done for the year. Matt was the 1st overall pick in the 2038 Draft out of Richmond College. Best estimates are a minimum 7 months.

Wednesday- SD 9 CHI 5
W-Girard (1-1) L-Almodovar (1-2)
POTD- Buddy Bisschop (TUC) 3 H SHO 10 K

Chicago's Mejia done for the year
Late news out of Chicago after their 9-5 loss to San Diego tonight. 21 year old up and coming star Mario Mejia will miss at least the next 8-9 months of baseball after learning he had torn his patella tendon in his left knee on Tuesday night. In the seasons first 12 games Mejia hit .295 with 2 HR 5 RBI 2 2B and 2 SB in addition to playing a stellar CF.
“Mario was too distraught to come out and speak to you all. This is a devastating blow but one he will come back from. He will get fixed, he will rehab and he will patrol CF for us again in the near future, of that I have no doubt. Any time a player is seriously injured you cringe, but when it happens to a kid so young and on the cusp of so much it just feels a little more painful”
OF Dave Robledo was summoned from AAA Chicago to replace Mejia on the roster and Mario was put on the 60 day DL.

This is an absolute hum dinger of an injury. So many aspirations for him this year that are now gone. He will be back, but with severe knee injuries you always have to wonder what the player will be that comes out of rehab. His work ethic will add much to how healthy and how good he is when he comes back.

Thursday- SD 11 CHI 6
W-Bingham (1-1) L-Diaz (1-2) Believe it or not we led 6-5 heading into the top of the 9th. Neil Diaz got 1 out, but also allows 3 H 1 BB 1 HB and 4 runs as Trevino comes on to give up a grand slam and another run of his own. My closer is sitting on an 8.22 ERA.
POTD- John Sherman (HOU) CG 1 H SHO 4 K's
Friday- SD 4 CHI 3
W-Rodriguez (1-0) L-Diaz (1-3) S-Smith (2) POTG Joey Artrip 2-4 HR SB 2 R RBI Another 9th inning lead gone. Brown comes out in the 6th with an indiagnosed issue, and down 3-2. Cueva and Velez go 2.2 IP 1 H 3 K to give Diaz a lead. A Ken Evans 2 out error opens the gates and 2 hits later it's a loss.
POTD- Jian-guo Ochoa (DAL) 4-5 2 HR 7 RBI
Saturday- CHI 3 FW 2
W-Udo (3-0) 6 IP 6 H 2 ER 6 K POTG L-Zwald (0-3) S-Montes (1) Montes 2 hitless innings both gets a save and gives a tired pen a rest. Maynard gives Evans a day off and goes 3-5 2B
I quite literally have no one that has any experience at 3B, and that's something to address at some point as Evans is certainly a guy that can play out the schedule using the off days but I'd rather not push the franchise bat that hard, especially this early.
POTD- Felix Santiago (BAL) 4-6 2 HR 4 RBI 3 R

RECORD- 4-3 (11-8)
STANDINGS- 3 GB
RUNS- 91 t-7th

Chicago's Brown out
The Skyhawks learned that SP Chris Brown suffered a high ankle sprain in last weeks game and have been informed he will miss the next 6-7 weeks. Keith Feldmann was brought off his rehab and called up.

Ugh. Feldmann NEEDS to be in AAA working and getting better. It was him or Javier Olvia and he's far ahead of Javier development wise. This will be a fluid situation if we can find a veteran arm or someone else pokes their head up in AAA.

Tuesday- NY 11 CHI 6

He leads off and plays CF when he's not pitching.... Holy crap. Did I mention he's 269 of 343 in career Stolen bases! He's also in the final year of his contract. Even better? He was the 35th overall pick in 2029 out of Roscoe HS in Roscoe NY and is a local legend and a national sensation right now. He also has 7 career leadoff HR's.

Week 5

Sunday- CHI 8 MIA 7 (11)
W- Diaz (2-3) L- Martinez (0-1) POTG Pininferino 2-5 HR (3) 4 RBI Evans drives in game winner in the 11th going 3-6
POTD- Hector Espinoza (BOS) 3-3 3 2B 4 RBI
Monday- CHI 15 MIA 3
W- Aguayo (2-1) L- Centeno (3-2) S- Trevino (1) POTG and POTD Roberto Morales 3-5 2 2B HR 5 RBI
This couldn't come soon enough. Roberto, while playing great defense, was worse than an out hitting in the 8 hole. This monster day brought him over the Mendoza line to .207. Granda, Robledo, and Hirsch all had 3 hits and Kenny Evans hammered his 7th HR and drove in 2 (24).
Great way to end the first month.

Tuesday- PHI 4 CHI 3
W- Levsen (4-1) L- Udo (4-1) S- Vargas (1) Dave Robledo has been a revelation. 3-5 today and is hitting .339 since being called up.
POTD- Tony Albino (TB) 3-4 2B HR 4 RBI 3 R
Wednesday- CHI 6 PHI 5 (10)
W- Montes (2-0) L- Hicks (2-2) POTG Ian Drewes 2-3 2 HR 4 RBI Feldmann goes down in the top of the 1st and the Pen is left with 9.2 IP. 6 H 3 R 4 K Diaz BS (4) on a 2 out 9th inning HR
POTD- Kevin Langley (SD) 2-2 2 HR 5 RBI 3 R 2 BB

Feldmann is a day to day thing so nothing to get worked up about.

Thursday- PHI 9 CHI 5
W- White (2-2) L- Molstad (3-3) S- Hicks (6) Robledo with 3 more hits to move to .352 and take over the team lead from Ken Evans who is clearly coming back to earth at .347. Rickey Martinez (PHI) goes 4-4 2 HR driving in 4 to win POTG and POTD
Friday- CHI 8 COL 4
W- Almodovar (3-2) L- Durant (1-4) S- Diaz (6) Drewes POTG 3-4 2B HR (6) 3 RBI Evans HR (8). Seeing Merz get off to the hot start made me a bit self-conscious as it relates to Drewes April. After today he's hitting .319 with 6 HR and 29 RBI's while ranking 3rd in the league in ZR, 3rd in Chances and PO and 7th in Range at 8.86. Almodovar tossed 127 pitches but could not get the games final out.
POTD- Jorge Fuentes (BRO) 3-4 2 HR 5 RBI 3 R

Skyhawks, Evans apparently in long term discussion.
Rumors have surfaced that there is a deal on the table from Chicago GM to star 3B Ken Evans that might make him the highest paid 3B in PBL history. Someone close to the situation remarked that the initial offer took Evans a bit off guard in it's salary component and he responded by going to the clubs owner rather than the GM.

I thought the initial offer based on his ask was very generous. He wants close to 7 million a year and he wants 5 years with the final one a player option. I didn't touch that but based on what he's making I offered him a significant raise and kept the opt-out, increasing his potential award and performance bonuses to rather significant money. I honestly don't care who he works with as long as he remains a Skyhawk until he retires. We just made the 2nd offer and got very creative. With the 26th ranked budget (75 million) and a potential profit of 5+ million this season, we're looking at close to 17 million on the table for extensions with another 15.7 slotted for free agents so we can absolutely make this work.

Saturday- COL 5 CHI 0
W- I. Martinez (1-0) POTG CG 6 H 5 K L- Aguayo (2-2) 7 IP 3 ER 5 K
POTD- Miguel Gonzalez (WAS) 3-4 2 HR 5 RBI

IF prospect Chris Ross broke his finger in a AAA game today and is out a month. He was leading the league in stolen bases (13) and hitting .258.
Class A New Orleans is off to a roaring 4-21 start. I am not a fan of our minor league clubs below AA. I think we may have some gems at the complex but our A and Short Season clubs need a full work over I think.

RECORD- 3-3
STANDINGS- 18-14 3 GB
RUNS- 166 6th
RUNS ALLOWED- 164 t 9th

April ends

Going to give you a look at the overall standings and leaderboards at the end of each month. Also, give you a look at logos and whatnot, the mod group was, as always, an enormous resource and awesome as hell. Amazing work by all of you.
Couldn't be happier honestly. I had no idea how this group would come together but it appears some of the pen issues are working themselves out. The Mejia injury, adding the Diamond injury in there as well, are huge downers in an otherwise great month.

Does anyone know the best, easiest, fastest way to make unique stadiums for each major league team? No worries if not.

WEEK 6 Notes

Record: 24-14
Position: 2nd place 1 game back
Runs Scored: 204 (5th)
Runs Allowed: 184 (7th)
Defense: .658 (13th)
Power Ranking: 128.4 (3rd)
Owner Mood: Ecstatic; Fan Interest: 65
  • Last Week: (6-0) 1-0 @ Columbia, 3-0 @ Washington, 2-0 vs San Francisco
  • Sunday night Arvid Udo went 8 on 4 hits and an unearned run but was in line for the loss until Ken Evans drilled a 2 out PH solo shot to tie the game at 1. 4 hitters later Heath Hirsch drove in the game-winner. Diaz tossed a perfect 9th for his 7th save. Morales is down to .189.
  • Bostons John Cook homered 3 times on Monday, all solo shots.
  • Our scouts are all over the country scouting a list of prospects. We pick 9th and it's my 1st draft, I want to set a tone and a bar with this draft. It's likely I'll lean towards best available talent for the 1st ten rounds and then look at the organization weaknesses in the minor leagues and address those during the last 10. Right now I have 2 picks each in the 1st three rounds. So I will have 8 players after round 5. ESPN has us grabbing 6'5” righty Clete Black out of East Carolina with the #9 pick. I would like the chance to take the kid if he's still there. As of today Dan and the scouts are all in agreement.
  • On Tuesday Aaron Maynard went 4-5 scoring 3 times to raise his season average to .400 in 50 at bats. Fernando Montes punched out 5 in 2 IP for the save in a 7-4 win over Washington.
  • In the final game of the series Ken Evans hit 2 HR's and drove in 5 in a 10-3 win over the Eagles. Antonio Almodovar went the distance giving up 8 hits, 6 K's and allowing just 3 unearned runs.
  • This week: 1 vs San Francisco (21-17) 3 @ Las Vegas (12-26) 3 vs Nashville (17-21)

Evans staying in the Windy City.
The Chicago Skyhawks today announced the signing of superstar 3B Ken Evans to a 4 year 24.985 million dollar contract extension that will make him the highest-paid 3B in PBL history. The deal includes an opt-out for Evans after year 2 and a 4th-year player option at 6.115 million. Years 1 and 2 will be at 5.88 and 5.98 million, and if he does not opt-out he will, as of today, become the first player in franchise history to earn 7 million dollars for a single season. Season ticket sales skyrocketed after the news and prior to the game. Evans then went out and hit 2 HR's and drove in 5 in the Skyhawks 10-3 win over Washington. When asked about the new deal and the night he had he replied “That's what they pay me to do” and headed off, naked, in his shower shoes.

    Backroom chatter
There's a million-dollar MVP bonus each year as well. I wasn't going to play around with this. Maybe, and that's a very strong maybe, I overpaid a tad? He's going to be 32 next year and if he stays all 4 years I'm paying him 6.1 million at age 35. I think we may sneakily get a bargain. We will work on the defensive side as it is still an issue but the fans, and Mr. Segura are ecstatic at the news. The other big factor? I don't think I overpaid for the simple fact I got a potential HOF player who wanted a six-year deal, down to 4 years. Fan interest jumped from 61 to 65. Now I need to draft, or sign, the pitching equivalent of this guy. On a side note, the comment on defense wasn't intended to be light-hearted. We are 13th in Def Eff at .660 and 14 (dead last) in ZR at -7.3 as well as tied for 4th with 25 errors.

WEEK 7 Notes

To be clear, if you have not noticed I stole this new format, line for line, from Orcin's Louisville recap. I loved the format and I want to find a way to 'get to know' the players on my team and in the league better. It definitely feels like this is it. I am clearly more 'wordy' than Orcin and not even close to the writer, but the intent is the same!

Record: 27-18
Position: t-1st
Runs Scored: 258 (1st)
Runs Allowed: 236 (8th)
Defense: .654 (14th)
Power Ranking: 113.6 (4th)
Owner Mood: Ecstatic ; Fan Interest: Dropped a point 64
  • Last Week (3-4): 1-0 vs San Francisco 1-2 vs Las Vegas 1-2 vs Nashville
  • David Robledo went 3-5 with a 2B HR SB and 3 RBI while scoring 3 times in a 9-5 win over San Fran in the series final game. He's now hit in 20 straight and is hitting .346, the homer was his first. The win ran our streak to a season high 7. Ken Evans went 3-4 in the game driving in 2. He's climbing again, now at .370 12 HR 36 RBI's.
  • Ferdinando Montes went 2 scoreless for his 3rd save and our bullpen ERA is now 3.54, the best in the Western League. The staffs 293 K's rank 3rd while our starters are lagging in 9th with a 4.89 ERA. I don't think leaning this hard on the bullpen is going to last.
  • Losing 5-4 to Vegas in the opener wasn't the bad news. David Robledo made a diving catch in CF in the 7th and didn't get up. Jeff Davis went 3-3 driving in 2 in the loss to earn POTG.
  • Robledo suffered a sprained ankle and will be out at least a month. OF Andres Hernandez is called up to the roster spot. He plays exceptional defense at all 3 spots but likely will be in CF the first couple days with Jon Gonzalez on a cold streak and down to .205
  • On Wednesday Antonio Almodovar got just 4 outs and surrendered 8 hits 2 walks and 9 earned runs in a 17-10 loss to Vegas. The staff walked 10. Drewes was 3-4 with 2 2B and 3 RBI's and Jon Gonzalez might have seen the Hernandez move as a wake up call. He went 2-5 hitting his 2nd homer and driving in 4.
  • In Thursdays 8-5 win over Vegas Ken Evans took home POTG going 3-5 2B HR (13) and drove in 2 (38) while Gonzalez made it 5 for his last 9 going 3-4. Nestor Diaz tossed a scoreless 10th for his 11th save tying him with New York's Ryohei Inouye. Roberto Morales went 2-5 with 2 doubles including the game winner in the 10th. That “raised” his average to .183 on the year.
  • That win put us at 26-16 and a three way tie for first in the East with New York and Philadelphia.
  • Not sure how to describe what just happened. Leading 10-5 into the 9th and the quartet of Cueva Velez and Diaz go 2 IP surrender 9 hits 3 walks 2 wild pitches 1 passed ball and 7 runs for a 12-10 loss.....
  • Baltimore Blackbirds right fielder Sal Hernandez hammered 3 homers and drove in 5 against the Tampa Pirates in an 8-4 win.
  • Eric Molstad closed out the week winning POTG honors going 7 allowing just 1 run and punching out 6 in a 9-1 win over Nashville. Ian Drewes went 3-5 with a 3B and is hitting .339 now.
  • Ken Evans is leading all Western League 3B in the early all star voting. Fernando Montes and Nestor Diaz are in the top 5 for relievers. Montes is having a monster 1st half. He's 3-0 with 3 saves and an ERA of 0.79 over 22.2 innings with 32 punchouts.
  • This week: 3 @ Boston (19-26) off day 3 vs Phoenix (27-18) leading the Western Division

There is now a discussion among the coaching staff and my office about the bullpen. They are all in favor of moving Diaz out of the closers role, and giving the job to Fernando. Both guys want the closing job but Diazs' control has to get better for this to be workable. Pitching coach Owen Akin talks everyone down, saying that 'it's coming' for Diaz but also agreeing that one more bad 9th and the move needs to be made.
