Future projects

One thing I hope to do is compile a large number of Mexican opponent types for what boxing card from Texas to California would be complete without one or two South of the Border warriors to fatten up some local hero's record? Many of these guys might be dismissed as tomato cans, but some may actually be rated as trial horses or journeymen. I intend to follow the early careers of such Mexican fighters as Miguel Canto, Jaime Balboa, Ricardo Lopez, and Carlos Zarate to get many of these guys. I've been searching boxrec but I'm too busy with other things to spend any time rating them right now. I hope to have a good number for each weight division.

It is like Christmas! I usually check for new fighters that have been posted when I'm reading the Forum posts and when I come across a fighter I don't have it really is like a getting a Chistmas present. Especially when it's a fighter I'd forgotten about and whose history I now get to rediscover or learn for the first time, while creating a new history in my universe.

My favorite fighters to obtain from postings on the Forum were from "Light weight Landslide". That was GOLD! Robin Blake, Chris Calvin, Frank Newton, Brett Summers, etc. Lots of not so famous fighters who were really good, but never became Champion, and had a role to play in boxing history in the 80's and late 70's.

Lightweight Landslide

When I stumbled over that thread I too was in seventh heaven. By the way, because of popular demand, I started a new thread with the first batch of Mexican opponents. I have to start posting the welterweights after this so, until I'm done with that and the follow up weight divisions more postings on the new Old Mexico thread will be occasional but consistant.

Famous Martial artists

These ratings are highly speculative and only being posted for fun. I do not intend to make it a habit of rating non boxers for the game, I especially do not wish to get involved in discussions about the merits of these fighters (especially Bruce Lee!). This forum is not the appropriate place I don't think as this site is meant to talk about boxing. I myself have a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do (I know, big deal!). But I do know a little about martial arts. A martial artist might do okay in the mixed martial arts arena but, unless he's been appropriately traine, better stay out of the boxing ring. There are only a few male martial artists who have made a name in pro boxing (Randy "Tex" Cobb comes to mind).

Nice addition here John!

Congrats on the black belt - that's impressive in anything to me!

My brother is a brown belt in karate.

I heard it was a very good fight between Geale and Mundine. They will probably rematch but Geale proved he is a fairly legit fringe contender.

Yeah I read the same thing. Mundine now wants Sturm since he's the #1 contender for the WBA MW crown.

BTW, anyone know why they tend to have big fights on a Wed. night in Australia? If the fight goes late, that makes it tough on people who have to get up early & go to work the next day.

For as long as I can remember......FOX Sports in Australia has cards once or twice a month on Wednesday. PPV's down there are usually on a Sunday night.

I'm sure Mundine/Geale did very well ratings wise for a middle of a week fight card.

Yeah, I think the big Mundine/Green fight was a Wed. night too - seems odd. What's wrong with Sat. night?

I think the Hagler/Leonard was on a Monday night back in 1986. That was definitely a weird night to have a big fight & can't recall hearing why it was held that night?. I recall that because I'd just started a new job that day & had to get up early after a late night. I'm glad most big fights are on Saturday nights.
