Bear Season Update

The Salem Witches and Shasta Black Bears, both at the top of their division, met in an epic clash of baseball powerhouses ending with a decisive...split.

Stephenson Bears 2-hit Salem Witches in last game of series to avoid a sweep.

A tip of our pointy hats to both types of Bears for making Bear Season a success!

Salem, Transylvania Lead as Our League Races Tighten

The Witches and Impalers, presumed practitioners of the dark arts, lead their respective Our League races, though the standings have compacted, leaving both races wide open. Hmm, perhaps it's time to visit Madame Toussaint's "equipment emporium."

stopped by the v19 game to check on my boys there.... downside: got bumped down to silver league.... upside: they are kicking some serious butt this season (72-36), with Mordecai Brown virtually unstoppable (17-1, 1.87 era.... had been undefeated until his last start)

All quiet in Annandale today, as we had no OL games scheduled. My hitter are finally starting to understand what they do with that thing called a "bat," so that's a bit of a positive development.

I did finally win a pack from Challenge Mode, and though I didn't get a Perfect.... or a Diamond.... or a Gold.... I did get a 71 Unsung Heroes Sandy Amoros, who can actually play a little LF ... he's got decent hitting vs RHP and his defense is good. Unfortunately for Sandy, my OF is full of guys like that so he stays on the Reserve Roster.

Wow. Between now and the end of the season, Salem has 13 games against the diamond-heavy Van Buren Pointers. We've been going back and forth all season. I'm a game back right now. It's make or break time for Salem...

Hey guys, a question unrelated to Our League.... I know you can get a free pack every 72 hours by simming games and getting achievements, but is that true on a per account basis? For instance, if I have 3 different teams/teams, can *each* team get a free pack every 72 hours? Or is it just 1 free pack and then wait 72 hours to try again?

pretty sure it's each team.... I've been too lazy to log in/out/run CM for each one to check it; but I've seen others post as much

The Challenge Mode packs thing has just been a time-waster for me. Nothing but 5 irons and 1 bronze, all Live cards. I think I'll collect a bunch of packs and save them to open them at once. I'd rather roll 6 dice at once than roll 1 die 6 times, despite it being functionally the same thing.

Question to Our Leaguers: How do you setup your bullpen? With the traditional setups/closer, or the more sabermetric stoppers? I've been running a closer, and I think you get some PP for save streaks, but I don't remember if the PP is that big of a deal. Switched to a double stopper setup this morning, will see how it goes.

Feels a little to much like playing the system instead of the game for me. I tried it but didn't care for it personally.

I have a closer (9th inning), a setup guy (7th or later) and the rest set to middle relief (with a couple high stamina guys as secondary long relief)

probably have to get a really high number on the saves streak to see a big return on points... think I have a 30+ streak once and got around 800 points if I remember right

I do the CM mode while logged in with the Waffletown team, as that's the only way they are going to get a pack... I figure with a 30% chance of drawing any non-live card, it's just not worth spending the points on a pack when I'm limiting the squad to 1945 and earlier... it's a rare thing to see someone usable emerge from a pack... but with the collections missions on the horizon, even the post 1945 and current live player cards will come in handy (not to mention the off chance I pull a solid card I can sell for big points, which turn into AH purchases)... so most of my pack draws just sit on the reserves

Well... Leaving tomorrow on an 8 night cruise to the Caribbean.. so I have resurrected Casey Stengal from the dead to take over managerial duties in my stead. I will be scouting some Dominicans when I get down there however.. Back on May 5th..

Not that I should be giving anyone advice on how to run a pitching staff, but I typcally have 1 closer, 2 setup guys (lefty and righty), 1 stopper, and 2-3 middle relief and possibly 1 long relief. The long relief is a converted starter, since they're the only guys with stamina above 17 I think.

With this kind of setup the stopper gets tons of work.

I saw a team in one of my leagues (I'm very nosy) that had 1 closer and the entire rest of the bullpen was the lefty-righty role (specialist? I forget what it's called). His team was doing well but I couldn't tell if it was because of or in spite of that setup!

Edit to add: I completed a Challenge pack for each of my 3 teams. Nothing better than bronze in any of the packs (but my packs-only team has such terrible starting pitching that I swapped in two new bronze SP for two of my existing SP. Probably won't make much difference but it's worth a shot.

Patriots Set Pace in Tight Our League I212 Race

Screen shots were waiting for me when I got home, so I figured I'd pop them up. Bottom Of The Sixth will be away until Sunday, so if you'd like further updates, one of the other four teams will have to send me snips of the team vs. team for the five of you to kidheckett@gmail.com. A quick check of the games remaining for Our League I212 (sorry no home and away splits):

Arkham - 7
Daytona Beach - 10
Gotham - 5
Mudville - 12
Philadelphia - 8

Salem's post all-star game collapse is nothing short of staggering. So far in August (18th) we are 4 - 12. One more game and an off day before we play 4 against the division leader. We could still turn it around as we play them 16 times now before the end of the season, but they are a stacked deck.

Plus, we play the keepers 3 times - and you KNOW they want to knock me out of the lead here.
