Walkers news: April 15 -- St. Louis 10, Cedar Rapids 1

Record: 6-3, 1st, Tied with Springfield

St. Louis pitcher Kyle Hendricks had a big day on the mound and at the plate as the River Walkers routed Cedar Rapids 10-1 at Busch Stadium.
With the win, the Walkers took the final two games of their opening home three-game series.
On the mound, Hendricks went seven innings, allowing just one run on one hits, while striking out 11 and walking three.
With the bat in his hand, Hendricks was 2 for 3 with a homer and two RBIs.
His two-run homer off Michael Kopech in the third inning capped a four-run inning and gave St. Louis a 6-0 lead.
The Walkers really unleashed the long ball in this game, as in addition to Hendricks' blast, it got a pair of home runs from Ender Inciarte to go with four-baggers from Nicky Delmonico and Tucker Barnhart.
Reliever Reyes Moronta handled the final two innings for St. Louis, not giving up a run.

Walkers news: April 18 -- St. Louis 7, Rockford 6

Record: 8-4, 1st, 1.2 GA Springfield
Andrew Benintendi homered twice but it was Manny Pina who came through with the big hit as the St. Louis River Walkers posted a 7-6 win over the Rockford Lightning at RFK Stadium.
Pinch-hitting, Pina connected on a two-run, two-out single off Liam Hendricks in the top of the ninth inning to give the Walkers a 7-6 advantage.
St. Louis jumped out to a 3-0 lead, only to see Rockford rally to tie it at 3.
The Walkers scored twice in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer from Benintendi off Hendricks. (OOTP note: Hendricks seemed to be the only Rockford reliever who either had not been used or in the red at this point. Although, he would be relieved by Brad Boxberger in the ninth).
But Rockford tallied three times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Todd Frazier drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly.

Hendricks, who was allowed to bat, however, drove in a pair with a two-run single off reliever Grant Dayton.
In the top of the ninth, Dayton, who was already pitching on fumes, walked the first two batters. A ground out by Adeiny Hechavarria put runners at second and third with two outs.
Pina, hitting for Dayton, followed with his two-run single.
Despite allowing Rockford to take the lead, Dayton earned the win.
Reyes Moronto tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save.

Walkers news: April 19 -- St. Louis 8, Rockford 6

Record: 9-4, 1st, 1.5 GA Springfield
Getting a start in his first game after being called up from AAA Memphis, Christian Arroyo went 4 for 5 with a two doubles, a homer, two runs scored and four RBIs as the St. Louis River Walkers posted an 8-6 win over the Rockford Lightning at RFK Stadium.
With the win, St. Louis took three of four games in the series.
Arroyo singled and scored a run that tied the game 1-1 in the second inning. He had an RBI double in the third which put St. Louis up 3-1.

His two-run double off reliever Brad Brach in the third inning made it 7-3.
After Rockford had pulled to within 7-7, his solo homer off Jimmy Sherfy provided a little insurance and proved to be the game's final run.
It was a rocky outing for Walkers starting pitcher Danny Duffy, who allowed six runs on seven hits in just 5.2 innings.
Five relievers -- John Curtiss (0.1 IP), Jake Diekman (0.0), Phil Maton (0.2), Bobby Poyner (1.2) and Reyes Montora (1.0) -- combined to limit the Lightning to a single run over the final 3.1 innings.
Rockford starter David Price also had an even rougher outing. He was torched for 7 runs on seven hits in just 3.1 innings.

Walkers news: April 20 -- St. Louis 5, Twin Cities 3, 10 innings

Record: 10-4, 1st, 2.5 GA Springfield
Andrew Benintendi homered twice, including a three-run shot in the top of the 10th inning, to help the St. Louis River Walkers to a 5-3 win over the Twin Cities Snow Cats at the Metro Dome.
Benintendi's game-winning blast came off reliever Chase Vallot, a catcher who had been pressed into service because of fatigue in the Snow Cats' bullpen.
Benintendi's first homer, a two-run shot off Chris Stratton in the fourth inning, gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead as he drove in all five of his team's runs.
An RBI single from Carlos Santana off Daniel Hudson in the bottom of the ninth inning forced extra innings.
The Cats threatened in the bottom of the 10th, an RBI double from Elroy Jimenez making it 5-3 and putting runners at second and third with two outs.
However, John Curtiss got Gleyber Torres to ground out to end it.

Walkers news: April 22 -- St. Louis 16, Twin Cities 13

The St. Louis River Walkers scored eight runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead.
They watched that lead disappear -- as Twin Cities scored four times in both the sixth and eighth innings -- to take a 13-9 lead.
Only to have the Walkers pour seven runs across in the top of the ninth to grab a mind-boggling 16-13 win at the Metrodome.
With the win, St. Louis swept the three-game series in Minneapolis.
Andrew Benintendi and Michael Conforto both had two-run doubles in the inning against Cats reliever Thyago Viera, who sustained all the damage, as I guess the Twin Cities bullpen was exhausted.
For the game, what a surprise, Benintendi was huge again going 4 for 6 with two home runs, a double and six RBIs.
Brock Holt was 1 for 6 but still managed to drive in three runs.

Colin Moran, Gleyber Torres and J.P. Crawford all hit homers and drove in three runs for the Cats.
No pitcher stood out.
Phil Maton earned the win for getting the final out of the eighth inning.
John Curtiss, however, did toss a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Walkers news: April 25 -- Des Moines 7, St. Louis 5

Record: 13-5, 1st, 3 GA Springfield
Down 5-2, Des Moines smacked a pair of seventh inning two-run pinch-hit homers to pave the way for a 7-5 win over St. Louis at LaBlatt Stadium.

The loss ended a six-game win streak for the River Walkers.
Pinch-hitter Austin Meadows supplied the first big blow of the seventh inning outburst, with a two-run home run off John Curtiss.
The second came off the bat of Brian Mundell, this one off Jake Diekman.
The Harvesters added an insurance run in the eighth, Reese McGuire with an RBI single off Daniel Hudson.
One of five relievers who took the mound for Des Moines, Max Fried earned his first win of the season after striking out the side in the top of the seventh.
Jandel Gustave pitched an uneventful ninth for his fourth save.
Des Moines starter Zach Wheeler allowed two runs in 4.1 innings.
Walkers starter Danny Duffy lasted six innings, also giving up a pair of runs.

Walkers news: April 26 -- Des Moines 4, St. Louis 1

Record: 13-6, 1st, 2.5 GA Des Moines
St. Louis starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks had one bad inning, but the Des Moines Harvesters did enough damage to help them pull off a 4-1 win at LaBlatt Park.
With the win, Des Moines took the final two games of its three-game series against St. Louis.
An Adeiny Hechavarria RBI single off Des Moines starting pitcher in the fourth inning staked the Walkers to a 1-0 lead.
But the Harvesters busted loose in a big way against Hendricks in the fifth.
They opened the inning with three straight hits -- Nicky Lopez led off with a single, a Reese McGuire moved him to third and pinch-hitter Austin Hayes also doubled, putting Des Moines in front 2-1 -- Kahlil Lee then hit a two-run homer with one out, expanding that advantage to 4-1.
Berrios was impressive, limiting the Walkers to one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Four relievers -- Bryan Garcia (2.0 IP), Gabriel Moya (1.0) and Jandel Gustave (1.0) -- combined on four shutout innings to close out the win, with Gustave earning his second save in as many night.
Hendricks got the first out of the seventh inning before being relieved.

He allowed the four runs on eight hits.

Walkers news: April 28 -- Springfield 9, St. Louis 7, 10 innings

Record: 13-7, 1st, 2 GA Des Moines and Springfield
Mookie Betts connected for a two-run single off St. Louis' Reyes Moronta in the top of the 10th inning to help give Springfield a 9-7 win at Busch Stadium.
Delino De Shields had led off the inning with a single of Moronta and stole second base. His fourth steal of the game.
The River Walkers then decided to walk Max Schrock, who bats left-handed, to bring Betts to the plate. He then slammed the third pitch he saw down the left-field line, scoring both DeShields and Schrock.
It was a wild game.
St. Louis' Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning off Prairie Fighters starting pitcher Pablo Lopez.
In the top of the second, Springfield answered back with a trio of runs.

Abiatal Avelino with an RBI single off St. Louis starter Luis Gohara. DeShields drove in a run with a fielder's choice. A run which scored on a Schrock sacrifice fly then tied it.
The teams then traded runs -- Freddie Freeman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Travis Shaw followed with an RBI double to put Springfield up 7-5 in the top of the sixth, only to have the Walkers' Michael Conforto slam a two-run blast in the bottom of the seventh -- until the Fighters plated a pair in the top of the 10th, which St. Louis failed to answer.

Carl Edwards Jr., who tossed a scoreless ninth, for Springfield, collected his first win of the season.
Taylor Williams allowed a pair of baserunners in the 10th, but still came out of it with his first save.
(COMPLAINT: DeShields had four steals in the game and Springfield had five total. But not on one occasion when I had my best base runners -- Inciarte and Benintendi -- attempt to steal were they allowed to go. Got the old, he didn't get a good jump excuse. Lame).

Walkers news: April 29 -- St. Louis 5, Springfield 4

Record: 14-7, 1st, 2 GA Des Moines
Down 3-0, St. Louis poured across five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for a 5-4 win over the Springfield Prairie Fighters at Busch Stadium.
After not being able to muster much against Springfield starting pitcher Josh Hader and reliever Sam Freeman through the first six innings, the River Walkers bats came alive in the seventh.
Adeiny Hechavarria and pinch-hitter Alberto Almora drove in the first two runs with singles off reliever Tim Hill.

Jin-hwan Chung then struck the big blow with a bases-loaded double that cleared them, making it 5-3.
Travis Shaw had an RBI double off a struggling Jake Diekman in the eighth, pulling the Prairie Fighters within a run.

However, Phil Maton wriggled out of a jam in that inning to keep St. Louis on top.
Grant Dayton then pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since joining the Walkers.
St.Louis starter Aaron Nola turned in a solid performance, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings.
On a down note, Keone Kela pitched in the majors for the first time since August of last season --when he suffered a partially torn labrum -- but lasted just one batter, walking Abiatal Avelino, with another apparent shoulder injury.

Walkers news: Reliever Labourt lost in waivers claim to Evansville

The St. Louis River Walkers have lost left-handed relief pitcher Jairo Labourt in a waiver claim by the Evansville Big Bossemen.
Out of options, Labourt was placed on waivers when reliever Keone Kela was deemed ready to return to the major league roster on April 28.
Kela lasted just one game, re-injuring his right shoulder while pitching against Springfield on April 29. He is back on the disabled list.
Labourt pitched in four games for the River Walkers in 2020, covering seven innings. He had no record or saved, but struck out 14 batters while compiling an ERA of 7.71 and a WHIP of 2.43.

Walkers news: May 1 -- St. Louis 5, Quad City 3

Rhys Hoskins tagged Quad City closer Craig Kimbrel for a three-run, pinch-hit homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the St. Louis River Walkers to a 5-3 win at Busch Stadium.
The Walkers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, only to see the Thunder rally to tie it and eventually take the lead.
Anthony Alford evened it at 2-2 with a two-out single off Daniel Hudson.
In the top of the ninth, Scott Kingery singled with one out off Jake Diekman.

Kingery moved to third on a Meibrys Viloria followed with another single. A sacrifice fly from Blake Rutherford chase him home.
Kimbrel retired the lead-off hitter in the bottom of the ninth, but gave up singles to Manny Pina and Adeiny Hechavarria before Hoskins blasted a 3-1 pitched 407 feet into the bleachers in left-center.
St. Louis starter Trevor Bauer put together five shutout innings, before allowing Quad City's first run in the sixth.
He exited after that inning, after allowing the one run on three hits. He struck out seven and walked two.
