Anyone have expanded name sets?
In my world league, which has teams and players from every single country, at any given point there will be approximately 1630 players with African (19) names. Problem? There are about 800 first names and 1500 last names in the African name set. Before I finish a year of my game, there are guaranteed to be duplicates of each first and last name. So, does anyone have an expanded African name set? I'm not asking for 100% accuracy for frequencies and such, but as long as there are no female-only names or anything it should be fine.
If nobody has anything, that's fine, but I will add to this list as I go on figuring out the numbers (I have a whole excel spreadsheet set up for this). Last edited by Ike348; 05-04-2014 at 04:14 PM. |

Haha I think I'm kind of desperate here, considering there are only 40 name slots available. Even if I did find a Mongolian name set, I wouldn't be able to replace any others without causing problems in other countries. I think I'll have to stick with a mix of Chinese and Russian names for Mongolia.

Here is the list of the number of names per name set that will be in my game. Obviously African (19) stands out, but I'm a little worried about Arabic names (17) and Indian names (27). This brief list shows which sets could use some splitting up and which sets could stand to be merged together. Armenian (26) and Azerbaijani (29) are the most glaring examples, and unlike some others at the bottom, both of those countries have other name sets that would make a reasonable fit. Scottish (16) is also a good candidate to go as those names aren't that different from the regular UK set.
I used Questdog's names, which explains 39 (U.S. African-American) having about 53 players. This list was calculated by dividing the countries into continents, and finding the percentage of the continent's population for each country. (Example Brazil counts for about 49% of South America's population). Then, the percentages of each name set for each country were entered into my spreadsheet. Then they were added up and multiplied by the number of countries in that continent*40 to simulate a 40-man roster for each country. Finally, the totals for each name set for each continent were added up and shown in this screenshot. Obviously there are some problems with this, as Polynesian gets such a high showing because the majority of Oceania has Polynesian names. In cases where there was no ethnicity data for a country, I entered approximate values. And finally, only real independent countries were listed. Puerto Rico didn't make the cut. |

Not sure I understand what you're trying to accomplish here. Are you editing the names files to make them smaller?

No, I want them to be bigger. I made this spreadsheet for my world league to see what the chances were of names getting repeated. The numbers above show nothing except for problems in my world.
However, I also did two other spreadsheets... one with the default MLB percentages, and another with real world population percentages (ex. high Chinese and Indian populations so more Chinese/Indian names). |

I added a Mongolian namelist to my game by merging the Canadian and French Canadian namelists to make room for one more. I was playing a 'Silk Road Baseball' fictional league and got annoyed that they used Chinese names.
By the way... there should be more ethnicities in OOTP 18. Because making a realistic Central Asian baseball league is just impossible, folks. |

Mongolian names are tough because they don't use family names the way most cultures do. Their surnames are patronyms. Most Mongolians today also include a clan name as part of their name.
