Alot. Just think every player back to beyond 1871 and then some.

Allow me to rephrase my question then. I have never used the random debut feature and I'm thinking about creating a league in 1871 and going from there. In the prior version I played the game out from 1871 to roughly mid 1970s historical playing with real debuts. In this version rather than playing the same game again I was thinking about using the random debut feature. With that being said how many rounds of the draft should I have fill the league up each year? 6-8 rounds? More? Less? I don't really want to run out of players in the 1950s or anything crazy like that.

You have 8 teams and need about 80+ guys. One for every position and a few extras. So around 90 will get you maybe what you need.

I had this problem in 15, and by then it was late in the 2000s and I didn't want to restart. So what I did in 16 is start in 1901 (that way there are no 1-man rotations or 40-odd game schedules) but have no minimum import. That way I cut off a good 30 years of imports that could be saved for later.
I started with a 5 round draft until 1938 then went up to a 10 man draft until 1969 when expansion ramped up and I went to a 12 man draft, then I went back to 10 in 1978. I also only import for the exact number of rounds which may leave me short if some draft picks don't sign but I don't imagine I will have problems due to over 30 years of 5 round drafts and having an extra 30 years of players. I believe when I did the import in OOTP 15 and ran out of players I had a 10 man draft from 1871 on so I wouldn't recommend that throughout the league. |

Between 1901 and 2014 there have been 2376 team/seasons:
1901-1960: 60 years x 16 teams = 960 1961: 1 year x 18 teams = 18 1962-1968: 7 years x 20 teams = 140 1969-1976: 8 years x 24 teams = 192 1977-1992: 16 years x 26 teams = 416 1993-1997: 5 years x 28 teams = 140 1998-2014: 17 years x 30 teams = 510 = 2376 Divide that by the number of players Mark found (18484) and you get 7.78. Therefore, if you have 7 or 8 round drafts (depending on how many players come through the initial import of course) you should be able to make it. |

with 16 teams inaugural drafts seem to be right around 700 players when I do random debuts
