League Totals Modifiers

I thought I knew how this is supposed to work, but now I am confused. I am playing in 1939, and the correct league totals enter for that year, so shouldn't all the modifiers start at 1.0? But they don't. Below are the modifiers entered by the game. Most of them are not far from 1, except triples, but why are they anything except 1, since the league totals are accurate?

I don't think I am getting league totals that are out of whack, but I just want to understand how this works, in case I need to make some tweaks.

They are the modifiers your individual PLAYERS need to produce those correct league totals. A different mix of players will produce a different set of modifiers.

I wouldn't put it down to individual players. I see it more as a reflection of the talent distribution in a league. If you get a large number of young power hitters developing at the same time HR totals may rise beyond the expected league totals. In this case I see modifiers as a sort of buffer. The best players hit the most home runs but the league output is in the 5% window most people expect.

According to the manual these numbers are put there for us to use, to adjust the league totals:

"As a more intuitive alternative, the right column contains modifiers, with a default setting of 1.000. A value of 1.000 is equivalent to modern professional baseball level. These modifiers can be used to adjust the statistical output of your league. For example, if you want 10% more home runs, instead of adjusting the home run totals, just change the home runs modifier to 1.100."

If it were a column of 1.000's it would be intuitive. But those calculated modifiers, carried out to three decimals, sure look like you shouldn't be messing with them.

The messing with them bit has been automated in OOTP12. You should no longer ever need to mess yourself.
