The Denver Bears are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend and finish up this two week home stand. They just split two games at home with Minnesota. This is our first meeting of the season. We were 4-4 against them last year and 5-3 in 2001. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.63 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.80). They have tied San Francisco as the most prolific home run hitting team in the PCL with 79 round trippers. But if you want to win a Championship playing in Denver, you had better be leading the League in scoring. The Bears are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.51 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.34). Their run differential is +8 and ours is +104, still the best in Baseball.

Denver Bears (35-35 .500 9.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at

DEN: Tom Parris (30-R 3-8 5.23) vs. POR: Bruce Ancona (23-L 0-0 7.20) Rookie

Parris was signed as a free agent from Oakland in March. He is 1-0 in his last 2 starts, going 7 innings each time and allowing 1 run in the win and 2 runs in the no decision. He was 1-2 against us last year with Oakland with a 5.82 ERA in 17 IP.

Ancona pitched 4 strong innings in his Beaver debut, but got hit hard in the 5th and 6th innings.

Kevin McKinney flies out to deep left and Woodford tags up and scores without a throw. 6 to 4, Beavers. Tom Boyles grounds one to short, but Reid Reddick boots it... Not a great time for your first error of the year, Reid... They let P Domenic McCabe bat. Boyles steals 2nd. McCabe strikes out looking. 2 outs. Joe Taylor pops out to 2nd!!!

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Jon Weekley (27-R). He walks the first two batters, Colin Woodford and Johnnie Graham.... Kevin McKinney lines one hard to left center, but Jack Hinckley makes a leaping catch on the warning track! Woodford tags up and goes to 3rd. Tom Boyles hits a home run to straight away center.... 7 to 6. Bears. His 3rd homer in 3 days....Weekley is weak...

Bottom of the Ninth:

Jerry Suazo swings at the first pitch and flies out to right... Jack Hinckley strikes out on 3 pitches....

For Denver, CF Tom Boyles missed a Cycle because he did not hit a single... He scored 2 runs and had 4 RBI. He hit a home run for the 3rd game in a row... He now has 15 on the season.

Trudy's report on Bill Woodward is a mild oblique strain that should be fine by tomorrow.

We have to make a short 4 day, 2 city road trip and then we are back home until July 20! Today, we are in Los Angeles to play the Angels a 2 game set. They lost 3 of 4 here to Dallas over the weekend. We are 3-4 against them on the season and split 2 games with them the last time we were here, May 26-27. They are 12th in scoring in the PCL with 3.78 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.75). They have the 2nd worst OPS in the League (.658). We are 5th (.720). The Angels are 6th in fewest runs allowed with 3.92 (Portland is still #1 with 3.40, but just barely). Kansas City is #2 with 3.45 and closing fast. The Angels' run differential is -10 and ours is +101, still the best, but not as good as it was...

Portland Beavers (40-35 .533 3 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Los Angeles Angels (39-35 .527 3.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Flores (24-R 9-5 2.86) vs. LA: Bud Fields (27-R 8-4 1.82) All-Star(01)

Flores has lost 2 of his last 3 starts. He allowed 4 runs in 6 IP last time out to lose to the Seals.

Fields is their #1 starter. He leads the PCL in ERA right now. He did not allow a run in 8.1 IP last time out and only gave up 3 hits and no walks, while striking out 7. Only once all year has he allowed more than 3 runs and that was 4 and he won that game. He beat us on Opening Day with 6.1 IP and gave us 2 runs (1 earned) and struck out 8.

Glenn Snowden grounds out to the pitcher...

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Dan Hamel walks on 4 pitches. He steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Tim Higbee throws the ball into the outfield.... Error #9... Fernando Vargas doubles down the right field line and Hamel scores. 2 to 1, Beavers. The Bullpen is up. Jorge Prado swings at the first pitch and lines out to center and Vargas tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. 2 outs. I knew we would, but I still cannot believe it... Reid Reddick grounds one to 2nd, but Britt Snyder boots it and Mexicano scores! 4 to 2, Beavers! Jose Julio grounds a hit through the left side and Snowden scores! 5 to 2, Beavers! Dave Risinger pops one to shallow left and Fernando Vargas rushes in and makes a diving catch and then throws to 2nd to double off Higbee....

Top of the Ninth:
PH A.J. Lee (23-R) lines a hit to right. Esteban Mondolfo grounds one to 2nd and Britt Snyder boots another one! Jack Hinckley grounds a hit to center and Lee heads home.... Portland Beavers (41-35 .539 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at
Los Angeles Angels (39-36 .520 3.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Vic Kyzer (24-L 0-1 1.00) Rookie vs. LA: Bill Wertz (32-R 9-4 2.50) 2-time All-Star

This will be Kyzer's first Major League start. And maybe his last, if he gets lit up.

Wertz lost his last start, giving up 6 runs in 8.1 IP to Dallas after pitching back to back shutouts, including a 1 hitter, in the two starts before. We have already faced him 3 times, which seems enough to me. He was 1-0 in the 3 starts, with 2 good games and 1 where we managed to score 5 runs in 3 IP.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS DEF)
PORTLAND
1: RF Jerry Suazo (28-L .253-253-3-17-.657 91)

8: SS Reid Reddick (25-R .255-98-1-17-.635 92)

8: C Tony Hewitt (30-R .195-41-0-0-.494 57)
9: P Bill Wertz (32-S .053-38-0-2-.105 1) 2-time All-Star

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Angel Stadium
Weather: 69 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from center
Attendance: 21,857

Top of the First:
Jerry Suazo pops out to center. Jack Hinckley grounds out to short. Fernando Mexicano grounds out to 1st, unassisted...

Bottom of the First:

Britt Snyder pops out to center. Rodolfo Rosado grounds out to 3rd. Dan Hamel grounds a hit to center. He steals 2nd. Jorge Prado takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Balkan grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Dave Stewart grounds a hit up the middle. Tony Hewitt swings at a 3-2 pitch and rips a doubles down the left field line and Stewart scores from 1st... 1 to 0, Angels. With 2 outs, Britt Snyder flies out to the warning track in center. Early returns are not good on P Vic Kyzer as a starter...

Top of the Fifth:
Tim Higbee draws a walk and P Bill Wertz balks him to 2nd. With 1 out, a wild pitch sends him to 3rd. Dave Risinger takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Reid Reddick drives one hard to deep left center, but CF Rodolfo Rosado runs it down and Higbee tags up and trots home. Tie Game: 1 to 1. P Vic Kyzer bloops a hit to left. Jerry Suazo grounds a hit to right and Risinger heads home from 2nd, but Dan Hamel throws him out at the plate....

Bottom of the Eighth:
On the Hill: Rich Larkin (23-R), after a scoreless 7th. With 2 outs, Dave Balkan triples to center. Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (29-L). Vinny Negrete, 2 for 26 (.077) with 7 SO against lefties, doubles to right and Balkan scores... 2 to 1, Angels. We walk Dave Stewart intentionally. Tony Hewitt strikes out looking.

Top of the Ninth:
P Bill Wertz is at 100 pitches. 4-5-6 up for us. We go down in order....

Lost - 2 to 1

We had 5 whole hits (all singles) and made no errors
Los Angeles had 7 hits and made no errors

Vic Kyzer, in his first Major League start, went 6 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit. A successful outing, but against a weak lineup and the fact that he did not strike out anyone is troubling. But we will give him another chance.
RHP Rich Larkin (L 1-3) went 1.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 2.
LHP Victor Alvarez got 1 out, allowed 1 hit, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.

Bill Wertz (W 10-4) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

C Tim Higbee had a hit and a walk and scored our run.

We are in Oakland to play a 2 game set. The Oaks just won a pair of games in Seattle. We are 4-0 against them so far this year and this is our first trip to the Coliseum. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 3.91 runs per game (Portland is down to #3 with 4.71). They are 4th in HR (76), but last in BA (.236) and SB (29). We are tied for 8th in HR (51) and we are 3rd in BA (.271) and tied for 6th in SB (62). The Oaks are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.27 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.36). Their pitchers have allowed the fewest HR (38). We are 3rd best with 44. Their run differential is -28 and ours is +104, still 5 runs better than Dallas.

Portland Beavers (41-36 .532 3 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West) at

POR: Steve Muir (28-R 10-3 2.80) Gold Glove(01) vs. OAK: Danny Colon (33-L 5-7 4.40)

Muir has lost 2 in a row. He gave up 4 runs in 8 IP last time out.

Colon was acquired in a trade with Seattle in December. He started off the season 3-0 and then lost 7 decisions in a row, but has now won 2 in a row. He gave up 2 runs in 8.2 IP last time out. We have not faced him this season. He was 1-1 against us last year with Seattle, but pitched well both games, including a 5 hit shutout.

Independence Day

We are back home to play a 3 game series over the weekend with the Sacramento Solons. They just split a pair of games at home with Hollywood. We won 3 of 4 against them here, May 1-4. They are 9th in the PCL in scoring with 4.10 runs per game (Portland is down to 4th with 4.65). The Solons are 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.73 per game (Portland is still #1 barely with 3.41). Their run differential is -49 and ours is +98, now 5 runs behind Dallas.

Sacramento Solons (34-44 .436 10.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (41-38 .519 4 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West)

SAC: Mike McLane (25-R 5-0 2.19) vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 7-6 2.85)

The game McLane started the first time we met Sacramento is the only one we lost in that series, but he only shut us out for 2.2 innings before he had to leave with an injury. His last start was a CG 6 hitter win where he allowed 2 runs. He was drafted #1 in the 2001 B Leagues Draft when we took Fernando Mexicano #2. Both have had their injury problems, but we have certainly gotten a lot more out of Mexicano than they have out of McLane. McLane's 5 wins this season are also his career total.

Johnson has won his last 3 starts. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 7.1 IP last time out, with no walks and 5 strikeouts.

Yesterday's game was rained out, so we are playing a doubleheader today.

Yesterday was Fernando Mexicano's 23rd birthday!

We want to recall P Bruce Ancona (23-L) from Vancouver (A), but he has not been their 10 days yet. So, we have to wait until tomorrw to get rid of Sandy Bastianelli (28-R).

Sacramento Solons (35-44 .443 10 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (41-39 .512 4.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

2nd best run differential in Baseball and we are in 5th place....

Game 1
SAC: Ellis Collier (26-R 3-7 2.61) vs. POR: Frank Flores (24-R 9-5 2.77)

Collier is 0-3 in his last 4 starts, but 3 of them have been Quality outings. He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits with 2 walks and 7 SO in 8 IP last time out, but the Solons only got him 1 run. We gave him his first loss of the season on May 1, scoring 5 runs in 4.1 IP, but that was after he had not pitched in 3 weeks.

Flores gave up 2 runs (1 earned) in 6.1 IP last time out, but had a no decision. It was not a very well pitched game, as he allowed 7 hits and 3 walks and only struck out 2.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Metropolitan Stadium
Weather: 72 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right
Attendance: 16,661

Top of the First:
Ralph McKinney loops an 0-2 pitch into no man's land in right for a hit. Harvey Turner beats out an infield hit on another 2 strike pitch... Dennis Rayner swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left and the bases are loaded with no outs... The Bullpen is up. Angel Arana lines a 2 strike pitch to right for a hit and both runners score... 4 to 0, Solons. Kyzer is heading back to the Bullpen and I hope he quits whining about being a starter... Call to the Bullpen: Duke McKenzie (25-R). Lou Drobish grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the First:
Jerry Suazo takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jack Hinckley swings at the first pitch grounds one to 3rd, but Larry Pierce makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error! Fernando Mexicano flies out to center... Top of the Fifth:
Ralph McKinney reaches on a throwing error by SS Juan Rojas. The Bullpen is up. Harvey Turner bunts McKinney to 2nd. Dennis Rayner takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Call to the Bullpen: Jon Weekley (27-R). Carlos Lopez (28-L) is in to play left in a double switch. Jim Holberton grounds one to 1st, but Oscar Trejo makes a bad throw to P Weekley for an error and the bases are loaded with 1 out. Larry Pierce strikes out! But I should have known better to think Weekley would get us out of this jam... Angel Arana grounds a hit to left and 2 runs score... 6 to 1, Solons. Lou Drobish grounds a hit to left and another run is in... 7 to 1, Solons. I truly loathe Weekley right now, but no one is any good at Vancouver (A). But I think I will send him down anyway, my enmity is so deep... At least when someone stinky stinks, you expect it... Weekley had a 1.45 ERA for Kansas City last year... Darryl Swaney flies out to deep right.

Through 5 innings, we have 1 hit off a pitcher with a 6.97 ERA....

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Carlos Lopez hits a home run to right. 7 to 2, Solons. with 2 outs, Jack Hinckley hits a home run to left. 7 to 3, Solons.

New Pitcher: Sandy Bastianelli (28-R), absolutely, positively his last appearance as a Beaver. P Bob Hill pops out to 2nd!!! In his last appearance, he gave up a hit to the pitcher....

Bottom of the Eighth:
A.J. Lee grounds a hit to left. 1B Glenn Snowden (26-R), who struck out as a pinch-hitter earlier, hits a home run to left center!! 7 to 5, Solons. That does it for P Bob Hill. New Pitcher: Duan Rokita (29-R), their closer the past two seasons, but supplanted by ex-Beaver David Fuentes this year. He has a 4.18 ERA and 42 H allowed in 28 IP. Rick Mansoor draws a walk. With 1 out, Juan Rojas grounds a hit to left. But the next two make outs...

Lost - 8 to 5

We had 8 hits and made 2 errors
Sacramento had 12 hits and made 1 error

Vic Kyzer (L 0-2), in his final start as a Beaver, got 1 out, allowed 4 runs and 5 hits.

For Sacramento, 1B Ralph McKinney had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored 3 runs. SS Angel Arana had 2 hits and 4 RBI.

Trudy's report on Rich Larkin is a sore shoulder that she expects to take a week to feel better... She also informed me that the status of LF Kim Springer, who we expected back by next weekend, has been updated to an uncertain return date... Superior!

Yesterday was a rare off day at home that was not a travel day. Vancouver (A) also had an off day, so I could not go up and watch them play. We sent P Jon Weekley (27-R) and P Sandy Bastianelli (28-) to the Mounties and recalled P Bruce Ancona (23-L) and P Jeremy Head (27-R). Ancona will got one more chance to start a game. By the way, there is no one at Vancouver who can help the offense. After completing the paper work for those transactions, I went flower hunting...

The San Diego Padres are here to play a 2 game set. They won 2 of 3 at home versus the Angels over the weekend. We are 6-1 against them on the season and won 2 games against them the last time they were here, June 17-18. They are last in the PCL in scoring with 3.39 runs per game (Portland is down to #5 with 4.57). In our last 12 games, we are averaging under 3 runs a contest. The Padres are 10th in fewest runs allowed with 4.31 per game (Portland is down to #2 with 3.41). Kansas City has passed us for #1. Their run differential is -74 and ours is +95, but falling rapidly, though Dallas is also sinking fast and we are only 1 run behind them for the best in Baseball.

San Diego Padres (33-47 .412 12.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (42-40 .512 4.5 GB tied for 4th place in the PCL West)

SD: Bobby Wolfe (26-R 6-8 4.28) vs. POR: Steve Muir (28-R 10-3 2.76) Gold Glove(01)

Wolfe is 0-6 in his last 7 starts. He gave up 11 hits in 7.1 IP against he Seals last time out, but only 3 runs, though the Padres only scored 2. He is 1-2 against us on the season, with 1 good game and two stinkers.

Since winning his 10th game, Muir is 0-2 in 3 tries for #11. He gave up 3 runs (1 earned) in 5 IP last time out for a no decision.

San Diego Padres (33-48 .407 12.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (43-40 .518 3.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the PCL West)

SD: John Riley (27-R 7-8 2.61) 2-time All-Star vs. POR: Bobby Johnson (24-R 7-7 2.72)

Johnson is our hard luck #1 starter. He lost last time out, giving up 1 run in 8.2 IP. He has allowed 16 runs total in his 7 losses this year and has not allowed more than 3 runs in any of them.

Yesterday's game was rained out, so we will try to play a doubleheader today.

San Antonio Missions (35-49 .417 16.5 GB in 7th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (45-41 .523 3.5 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

SA: Mitch Bagley (21-R 8-6 2.70) Rookie vs. POR: Bruce Ancona (23-L 0-1 7.00) Rookie

The rookie Bagley is their #1 starter. He lost his last start, allowing 4 runs (1 earned), 6 hits and 2 walks with 7 SO in 7 IP. We faced him in San Antonio and scored 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks in 6.2 IP. He had a no decision, but we lost the game.

Ancona gave up 1 unearned run in 8 IP for Vancouver (A) in his last start. In his last start for the Beavers, on June 26, he gave up 4 runs (3 earned) and 2 HR in 4 IP and lost. If he stinks again today, we will send him to the Bullpen and give him a trial there.

P Preston Rogers grounds one to 2nd and Juan Rojas makes a bad throw for an error and Oswell scores.... 3 to 0, Missions. Are we ever going to be a good team? How can we lose so much with the best run differential in Baseball? It is maddening! The Bullpen is up. Don Lose grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and we finally have an out. Gwang-sam Jean grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. Roberto Blanco grounds their 6th hit of the game already to right and Jean goes to 3rd. Tony Sotelo strikes out.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Glenn Snowden loops a hit to center and Gwang-sam Jean lets it roll under his glove for an error and Snowden takes 2nd. Tim Higbee takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. But the next three make outs.... I am sick of these non-hitters!

Top of the Seventh:

Don Lose leads off with a double to center.... Call to the Bullpen: Victor Alvarez (29-L). Jack Hinckley is in to play center in a double switch and Jerry Suazo moves to left. Gwang-sam Jean beats out an infield hit... Roberto Blanco strikes out. Tony Sotelo flares one to right and Jose Julio makes a great catch, but Lose tags up and scores without a throw. 4 to 1, Missions.

Bottom of the Seventh:

Fernando Mexicano takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Glenn Snowden, with much anticipation, pops out to left... 2 outs. Tim Higbee flies out to center...

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Danny Billings (26-R), a rookie making his Major League debut. He was slotted to make the team in Spring Training, but got hurt. He has pitched 4 innings at Tulsa (A) and allowed 4 runs, 8 hits and a home run, plus a pair of walks. Reid Reddick swings at his first Major League pitch and smashes it down the left field line and over the fence!! 4 to 3, Missions. P Billings has to leave the game with an injury... New Pitcher: Larry Hedglin (24-R), a rookie with a 3.74 ERA, but 47 SO in 33.2 IP. He was acquired in a trade with the Padres on June 12. PH Oscar Trejo (30-R) swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Juan Rojas strikes out on 3 pitches... Jack Hinckley manages to see 4 pitches before he strikes out...

Top of the Ninth:

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Tom Auerbach (24-R), their rookie closer, since they traded away All-Star Tim Perry to the Seals. Auerbach has a 5.53 ERA in 27.2 IP with 36 SO, but 5 HR. Jerry Suazo grounds out to the pitcher... Jose Julio triples over the right fielder's head! He had no doubles or triples on the season the day before yesterday, but now he has 2 of each! Now we have 2 shots with Fernando Mexicano and Glenn Snowden to blast one over the fence and tie the game.... Mexicano takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Snowden swings at the first pitch and sends it deep to right, but not deep enough...

Lost - 5 to 3

These guys have really made me look forward to the next three days I have off....

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
San Antonio had 10 hits and made 1 error

Steve Muir (L 11-4) went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.
LHP Victor Alvarez went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Denny Jennissen got 2 outs, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1.
LHP Vic Kyzer faced 1 batter and got him out.

RHP Tom Auerbach (SV 6) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit and struck out 1.

3B Fernando Mexicano had a hit and a walk. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits with his 18th home run of the season. C Tim Higbee drew 2 walks. SS Reid Reddick had 2 hits with his 3rd home run. CF Jack Hinckley went 1 for 2 and scored a run.

The Missions announced that rookie RP Danny Billings had strained his back and they expect him to miss three weeks.

The All-Star Team rosters were announced today and both 1B Glenn Snowden and 3B Fernando Mexicano were voted in as starters! It's the 3rd straight time for Snowden, who was the MVP of last year's game, and the first time for Mexicano. Not sure if Fernando will go to the game or not, with his bruised knee, though. We'll have to see. It would be a shame for him to not go, though, being his first time and all...
