As the LCS continues, the Waffletown GM made yet another move to bring in some new blood to the bullpen for next season.

SP - Paul Dean (1934) - 85, for 1600 points.

While his lack of movement did bring a moment of pause before pulling the trigger to bring him aboard, his solid control and overpowering stuff (especially when moved into a relief role, where it jumps from 101 to 116) will hopefully make up for it. Management hopes Dean will be able to blow away the competition a couple innings at a time. Elden Auker will be sent to the reserves at the end of the season to make room.

Like the LDS, things started poorly for Waffletown in the LCS. They dropped game 1 in a pitching duel 2-0. Hoping to bounce back in game 2, they faltered again and fell 7-3. Upon returning home, management hoped the team would get a boost from their fans; but dropped game 3 and put themselves into a massive hole.

Apparently enjoying the win-or-go-home adrenaline rush, Waffletown proceeded to win game 4 to avoid the sweep; then win game 5 to send the series back to Kansas City. They kept the winning ways going in game 6 to tie up the series and make it a one game-winner take all match.

Unfortunately, their luck ran out in game 7 and they lost 8-4 to see their season come to and end.

Management looks forward to next season in the Silver league, and hope they can compete well enough to make another run in the post season.

The start of the new season is just hours away, and Waffletown finds themselves placed in the AC Central division of the Silver 287 league. After their LCS elimination in the Bronze league playoffs last season, the team is ready to try their luck against the stiffer competition in Silver.

In their initial foray into the Silver leagues, management, players and fans alike weren't sure what to expect other than some stiffer competition than they had faced in the previous three years in Iron and Bronze. The Syrups got off to a slow start in April, limping to a 10-15 record for the first month. The team started to get into a groove in May and stepped up the pace to go 15-11 for the month. As the season heads into the last half of June, Waffletown has maintained a solid level of play with a 12-5 record so far for the month to put them at 37-31, good enough for 3rd place in the division and only 2 games behind the division leader.

After a slow start, newcomer Sliding Billy Hamilton has settled into the leadoff role quite nicely. While management expected to benefit from his speed more than anything, he is surprisingly tied for the team lead (with Freddie Lindstrom) in home runs with 8.

Johnny Pesky has been locked in at the plate, cranking out hits from the bottom of the lineup with enough regularity to lead the team with his .352 average (good enough for 2nd in the league).

On the mound, staff ace Claude Passeau is setting the standard with his 9-5 record and 3.15 ERA.

Prior to the start of the season, management was still unsure of their most recent pickup, Paul Dean, as his poor movement ratings might leave him vulnerable to the long ball. While that might be a problem if he was in the starting rotation and had to face opposing lineups 3 times over; in his relief role he has excelled. He has appeared in 20 games, for 33 innings, giving up only 21 hits, 6 walks and striking out 47 (12.9 K/9) with a 2.45 ERA.

At the All-Star break, Waffletown has fallen off the pace in the AC Central division and now find themselves 8 games back of the lead with a record of 49-46. Even with their less-than-stellar .516 winning percentage, the Syrups still sit in playoff contention as they currently hold the second wild card spot (there are only 4 teams above .500 in the entire AC conference, and they are all in the Central division).

Most of the team will enjoy the All-Star break as a time to rest and get ready for the second half of the season. Waffletown will send three representatives to the All-Star game this season:

3B - Freddie Lindstrom
SS - Johnny Pesky
CF - Sliding Billy Hamilton

Waffletown has maintained a consistent yet unremarkable level of play as they head into the final month. After their play in June (15-12), July (12-12) and August (16-12), the Syrups hope to at least maintain their pace of play as it has kept them in the second wild card position in a tight AC Central race (all 5 central teams are still above .500 and rank 1-4 in the chase for the wild card spots).

At the plate, Johnny Pesky continues to swing a hot bat with his .342 average (still second in the batting race); while on the mound, the pitching triumvirate of Passeau (17-9), Harder (12-8) and Carleton (15-6) are providing a solid punch from the starting staff.

Reliever experiment Paul Dean also continues to impress in his role, with a 2-1 record, 7 saves, 66.2 IP, 59 hits allowed, only 10 walks, and 94 strikeouts with a 2.56 ERA.

2023 wrap up: Waffletown managed to hold on to the second wild card position and once again make the post season. They advanced to the LDS with a victory in the wild card game over Vegas; but went down to the top seed Portland in the LDS 3 games to 2.

2023 awards - Claude Passeau took home the Great Glove award for pitchers; Johnny Pesky secured the batting title with his .348 average; and Silver Slugger awards went to Sliding Billy Hamilton (CF), Freddie Lindstrom (3B) and Ernie Lombardi (C).

The 2024 season is well underway and Waffletown finds themselves in the Silver leagues once again. Management hoped that the could build off their limited success from last season as they reached the post season and hopefully move further into the playoffs.

As the mid-point of June quickly approaches, the Syrups are struggling to perform up to expectations this season. They currently sit in 4th place in the AC East division with a record of 30-36.

Johnny Pesky has continued to build off his solid season from last year where he won his first batting title, and currently leads the league once again with his .346 average.

Management continues to closely watch the waiver wires for any potential upgrades, but has yet to find the right fit.

Waffletown welcomes the arrival of the All-Star break and hopes that the break will give most of the players the time to get their collective heads together and on the right page. The team has struggled through the first half of July (7-9) and have fallen 7 games off the pace for the AC East division.

Johnny Pesky and Cecil Travis continue to be bright spots for the offense as they sit 1-2 respectively in the batting race (.334 for Pesky, .319 for Travis). Lefty O'Doul has already tied his career best for home runs in his short stint with the club (20 already this season), and will hopefully obliterate that personal record with half the season remaining.

All-Star representatives for Waffletown:
-SS - Johnny Pesky (2nd appearance)
-2B - Cecil Travis (1st appearance)
-C - Ernie Lombardi (2nd appearance)

Cecil Travis kicks some serious booty in the All-Star game, taking home the MVP award for his performance. (4 for 5 with 4 RBIs and 1 run scored in a 14-5 romp over the NC).

With the team struggling to find wins after the All-Star break (10-17), management made a move in the final weeks of August to bring aboard a new (hopefully) ace of the starting staff. Joining the Syrups is....

SP - Mort Cooper (1942) - 96, for 18111 points

Jim Turner has been sent to the reserves, and Bucky Walters has been shifted to the bullpen to make room for Cooper on the starting staff.

As the final month of the season rolls in, management begins their review of the season performance to celebrate the (few) bright spots and examine where things went wrong for the team. The Syrups enter September in last place in the AC East division with a record of 58-76, 11.5 games back of the lead. Their dismal record puts them in the second relegation position. Among fans there is a debate on whether it would be better for the team to slide back to the Bronze league next year, or if it would be a good thing for them to fight down the stretch and pull themselves out of that position.

For individual performances, Johnny Pesky and Cecil Travis continue to push each other as they take their best shot at the batting crown this season. Pesky maintains his top spot (.329 avg) with Travis pulling within 9 points (at .320).

Newcomer Mort Cooper has yet to register a victory with the team, but has only had two starts (6 inning no decision game where he gave up 4 runs; and a solid 8 inning performance with only 1 run allowed; but took a loss as the team failed to give him a single run of support in a 1-0 defeat).

A lackluster season mercifully came to an end on a positive note with a 5-1 victory over division rival Waxsaw. The win was important for more than just the positive vibe to end the season, as it pulled Waffletown 1 game ahead of league rival Kiner's Korner and placed the Syrups in 28th place in the overall standings... one game safe from relegation.

Team records:

fun thing about piling up more and more seasons is it will hopefully get more difficult to break team records in batting/pitching/fielding. This season, only 2 categories saw new records for team batting: walks (553), and stolen bases (91). The team also set a dubious record of most losses in a season with 89

Pitching records were even more difficult to come by, as only one was set this season: a new low for home runs allowed (117)

Like the batting category, for team fielding there were two new records: total assists (1760) and the first triple play in team history (1)

Individual performances:

-Johnny Pesky managed to hold off a challenge by teammate Cecil Travis to secure his second consecutive batting title with a .324 average.

-Cecil Travis has one of his best seasons yet in Waffletown, smacking 204 hits, 47 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs, a team best 97 RBIs and a .315 average.

-while none of the starting staff really stood out this season, from the bullpen, Paul Dean had another solid season which made management believe even more that they made the right decision in picking him up and using him in his current role. He matched his rookie season mark of strikeouts with 121, and finished the year with a solid 5-2 record with 1 save and a K/9 mark of 13.4

edit: Johnny Pesky rounds out his outstanding season by taking home the Silver Slugger award at SS

The sixth season rolls into mid June and Waffletown finds themselves in familiar territory. After a decent start in April (16-12), they slid backwards in May (12-16) to a break even point. Twelve games into June, they are off to a better month once again (8-4) and hope to continue the winning ways.

While the offense has been performing well, with a league leading batting average (.289) and on base percentage (.351), they have been less successful in scoring those runners (ranking 4th in runs scored). Of the four batters currently hitting over .300, the most unexpected one is the team leader at this point, Stan Spence, with a .319 average (his lifetime average with the team is .262)

For the 2025 All Star game, Waffletown had three representatives in the lineup:

2B - Cecil Travis
C - Ernie Lombardi
SP - Mort Cooper

Like last year's mid-season classic, a player from Waffletown picked up the MVP award for the game... backup catcher for the game Ernie Lombardi went 2 for 2 with one home run to score the only run for the National conference (the writer of the headlines seems a bit confused, as it claims Lombardi was part of the AC squad )

side note for Lombardi this season: almost a third of his 49 RBIs this season came in just two games, where he drove in 8 runs and 7 runs respectively.

In a late afternoon move, the GM of Waffletown picked up a new starting pitcher to try and bolster the rotation:

SP - Ted Lyons (1939) 91, for 8000 points.

Jack Quinn has been sent to the reserves to make room for Lyons, and Willis Hudlin has been shifted to the bullpen.

Another back-n-forth season came to an end in Waffletown with a bitter finish as the team slipped from the second wild card position in the final week of the season and failed to make the post season. The Syrups ended the year with a record of 84-78, good enough for third place in the NC Central division. With just over 3000 points in the war chest, management has no immediate plans to bring aboard any new talent for the near future, so the current squad will remain intact for next year.

final notes for the 2025 season:

team records:

-the offense had a pretty solid season, despite their uninspired ending. They set team batting records for average (.288), runs scored (800), hits (1658) and on base percentage (.348)

-on the pitching side, the team appears to have had an equally solid season (which makes one wonder why they didn't do better in the standings, though one glaring stat stands out over all the rest as why the team didn't challenge for the division title: they were 14-29 in one-run games). Team pitching records set in ERA (3.88), lows in runs allowed (675), earned runs (625), and home runs allowed (109); and tied the team record for most complete games (15).

individual performances:

-Stan Spence had his best year yet with Waffletown. He set a team scoring streak record of 9 games; and also had personal bests in runs scored (90), hits (167), home runs (19), rbis (84); and outfield assists (14).

-Sliding Billy Hamilton and Cecil Travis made a nice one-two punch at the top of the lineup, batting .305 and .316 respectively; and provided the base runners for the rest of the squad to drive in.

-Lefty O'Doul took advantage of those men on base to the tune of 110 RBIs (career high), to go with his 23 home runs.

-Claude Passeau was the most consistent of the starting staff, finishing with a 17-9 record and a team low 3.30 ERA.

-while Mort Cooper's record leaves a bit to be desired (12-14), he continues to be the hard-luck member of the starting staff, with 10 of his losses coming from games where the team lost by 1 run, or failed to score at all.

-Joe McGinnity rattled off a save streak of 25 games during the season to tie the team record (set by Hugh Casey in 2022).

As the month of June comes to an end, the mood in Waffletown is cautiously optimistic as they sit in second place in the AC Central division at 43-36, 4.5 games back of the lead and just a half game ahead of Waxsaw for the final wild card spot. After a sub-standard start to the season (0-7 in the first week; 13-16 in Mar/Apr), the Syrups turned things around in May with a 17-9 run. With 2 games remaining on the June schedule, they sit at 13-11 and hope to avoid slipping back to a 500 record for the month.

While the team overall is performing fairly well (3rd in batting average, 1st in on base percentage, base running, runs against, started ERA and defensive efficiency), there really isn't any super standouts from an individual perspective; making it a true team effort.

Management continues to watch the waiver wire for potential upgrades, but with only 6000 points in the war chest, they aren't expecting to find anyone who could make a major impact on the squad.
