Unable To Sign Free Agents in 1972 WHA ...

... In the 1972 preseason (July 1), there are literally no signable free agents listed and when I attempt to sign a free agent, I see that his rights belong to the NHL and that a signing is not possible. Do I need to wait a length of time in-game for those players to be eligible for signing? Or is there something I'm missing, here?

Looks like there's something wrong with the WHA rights in a 1972 start, the unsigned players are getting the wrong rights marker as if they were eligible for a draft that they hadn't gone through yet. We'll have to investigate a little further, but I think it might have something to do with the 72 start not getting the WHA general draft at the beginning of the game.

73 and later works OK, you can sign free agents at the start normally, and 71 or earlier will begin the WHA with the general draft, after which free agents work normally, so it just seems to be 72 that has the issue.

OK, I simmed the '71-72 season to try and activate the WHA General Draft, but it doesn't seem to be scheduled even though the league has been created. Is that something the program does automatically?

Yeah, just advance the game and it'll start on July 2, it doesn't show up in the regular events/play until options.

As far as I can see, this only works when the "Draft/Generate Rookies at 17" option is enabled.

I usually don't choose to enable that option, and that's why it initially didn't work for me.

Hmm, that's odd, it should still be working with that option off, since it's not a rookie draft. But now I'm wondering if it's marked as one instead of being an expansion-type draft, we'll have to check that.

Yeah, I went ahead and re-did everything just to make sure. The first shot is with the "generate rookies at 17" option enabled, and the second one is with that option disabled.

Yeah, that's definitely it, then. Might be a little tricky to re-classify it, but if nothing else we should be able to set it so even if the draft doesn't occur, everyone can still sign in the WHA.

It's still impossible to sign free agents in the 1972 WHA offseason.

I also noticed that everyone's league rights are assigned to the NHL, even for guys who are already signed to a WHA team.

Still on the list to be fixed. The NHL rights you're seeing are the way it should be working for the WHA rights, too, i.e. either "All" or assigned to a specific team. Since it isn't, that's why the players aren't signable.
