Prospects' Potential

I'm at the trade deadline and I'm in rebuilding mode. I have a question regarding prospect potential ratings. While I understand a player's potential rating can fluctuate based on the most recent scouting, I am wondering if there is a mistake as to what I am currently seeing.

The #1 prospect in the Top 100 list currently has a potential rating of just 2 stars. The #6 overall prospect has a 0.5 star potential rating. And the trend continues.

I do understand that ratings fluctuate, and that you can change the scouting accuracy. I like to play with the accuracy as is so it has that unpredictability like real life. But considering their placement on the Top 100 Prospects list, shouldn't they maintain a fairly high potential rating?

I feel like you should feel confident in trading for a prospect in the Top 10 but I'm hesitant to trade for the #6 overall prospect when he has a 0.5 potential rating.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are two possibilities:

- your scout is right. If you generate the BA prospect list 'annually', it's possible that the no. 1 overall prospect has lost potential since Opening Day. Maybe your scout has noticed that;

- your scout is wrong. Especially if it's a new league (in its first season), your scouting reports might be quite inaccurate; they get better the more chances your scout has to see a player. Or maybe your scout isn't very good, or you aren't spending enough on scouting to get good reports.

So it depends a lot on your settings. But of course the kind of uncertainty you're seeing here is what makes the game interesting!

An additional question I think needs asked here. Is your prospect list set to Annual or Dynamic? Just checking. A few more questions may follow, but IL's already covered the likelihoods well.

I'm playing as the Phillies in year 2 with Marti Wolever as my scout who has the following ratings:

Scout Majors: Good
Scout Minors: Good
International: Good
Amateurs: Excellent

I also turned down my International Scouting to 7% and increased my Minor League to 28% and Amateur to 37%.

My prospect list is set to Annually. What is the difference between Annually and Dynamic and what effect will it have?

And I do enjoy the uncertainty! But something feels off when a player that highly regarded on the prospect list is viewed that poorly by my scout who has good ratings. Thank you both for your help!

I believe the annual prospect list will give you the top 100 on opening day and it won't change until next opening day (meaning that by the trade deadline your scout may have changed his mind on a top 100 player but the player is still on the list because it doesn't change.)

I think dynamic list is that the top 100 is always updated.

Dynamic fixes this; The reason that a player with a half star rating is on the top 100 prospects on annual mode is because if a team purchases a player from another league that was a top prospect in that other league then it carries over its prospect ranking even if it is a very low rating. I dont know if this makes sense to any of you, I'm awful with words but I hope this helps
