In the bottom of the third, Velarde put the Angels on the board with an RBI single. Fielder then walked to load the bases with one out. Edmonds took advantage and hit a two-run single. Salmon knocked in two with his own single. Erstad brought Salmon home with a double.

In the top of the fourth, Knoblauch put the Yankees on the board with an RBI single. Knoblauch went on to score on a Posada single. Jeter made it a three-run inning with a two-out RBI single. Curtis scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to two.

In the top of the fifth, the Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out. Brosius picked up a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game. Posada drew a walk to reload the bases with two out. Ken Hill took the mound for the Angels. Curtis flew out to right to retire the side.

In the bottom of the fifth, with a runner on first and one out, Ramiro Mendoza took the mound for the Yankees.

In the top of the sixth, the six-run deficit was completely wiped away as Jeter scored the tying run from third when O'Neill grounded to first.

In the top of the seventh, on three walks, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Jeter then gave the Yankees the lead with a run-scoring single. Mike James took the mound for the Angels. Williams grounded into the 4-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Mike Holtz took the mound for the Angels and on his very first pitch, Martinez took him 359 feet for a grand slam. With a runner on first and two out, the Angels made their third pitching change of the inning, sending Allen Watson to the mound.

In the bottom of the seventh, Erstad hit a two-run homer 412 feet to try to get the Angels back in the game. The Yankees brought Jeff Nelson from the bullpen. A hit batter later and Mike Stanton took the mound for the Yankees. A single put runners at the corners with two out and Graeme Lloyd took the mound for the Yankees and got Disarcina to ground to short to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Watson struck out the side around a one-out double by Raines.

In the bottom of the ninth, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees and finished off the Angels.

The two teams combined for 22 hits. The Yankees also drew 11 walks.

Rain began to fall in the top of the second.

The rain stopped in the top of the third. The Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Tejada couldn't find the handle on a Williams grounder and that allowed Posada to score from third. Martinez followed with an RBI single. O'Neill was the next batter as the rain returned. O'Neill beat out the 5-4-3 to allow Jeter to score.

Another walk reloaded the bases with still one out. Graeme Lloyd took the mound for the Yankees. Lloyd sent Anderson down on strikes for the second out. Jason Grimsley then took the mound for the Yankees and got Fielder, in his second at-bat of the inning, to fly to right to retire the side.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mike Holtz took the mound for the Angels.

In the top of the ninth, with runners at first and second and one out, Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees and prevented the Angels from adding to their lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Troy Percival took the mound for the Angels. Palmeiro injured his back catching a fly ball for the second out and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Reggie B Williams. The Yankees loaded the bases with two out. Pinch hitter Chili Davis tied it with a two-run single. Girardi then won it with his own RBI single.

The Angels had 10 hits in the loss.

In the bottom of the first, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. O'Neill flew to right for the second out without bringing home a run. Curtis then lined to third to end the inning without scoring.

In the top of the second, the Angels loaded the bases with nobody out. Disarcina grounded into the 1-2 fielder's choice for the first out. But then Anderson scored on a wild pitch. The Angels would reload the bases with two out. But Velarde flew to center and all the Angels would get in that inning was a single run.

In the top of the third, Anderson brought a run in with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the third, the Yankees again loaded the bases with one out just as rain began to fall. Curtis put the Yankees on the board with a sacrifice fly.

After three: Anaheim 2 New York 1.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the bases empty and one out, the rain stopped. Martinez would put the Yankees in the lead with a 340 foot two-run homer.

In the bottom of the sixth, Pep Harris took the mound for the Angels. Knoblauch got a run-scoring double. Jeter followed with a 329 foot two-run homer. With bases empty and nobody out, Doug Linton took the mound for the Angels.

In the top of the seventh, Hernandez hit Hollins in the head with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Hollins had to leave the game with a head injury. He was replaced by Troy Glaus. Salmon then tied the game with a grand slam. Darren Holmes immediately took the mound for the Yankees.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bernie Williams put the Yankees back in the lead with a two-out two-run double. With Williams at second and two out, Mike James took the mound for the Angels and got Martinez to ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, O'Neill hit a lead off double but left the game with a leg injury. He was replaced by Darryl Strawberry. Strawberry went on to score on a wild pitch with two out. Raines added a run-scoring double. With a runner on second and two out, Shigetoshi Hasegawa took the mound for the Angels. Knoblauch greeted him with an RBI single.

In the top of the ninth, the Angels loaded the bases with nobody out. Mariano Rivera took the mound for the Yankees. Rivera struck out Fielder and there was one down. Anderson popped into the infield fly rule for the second out. Walbeck, with his first hit of the season, got an RBI single. Pinch hitter Phil Nevin, swinging at a 3-0 pitch, popped up to first to end the game.

The two teams combined for 25 hits in the contest.
