Death
Death (Stephen Oliver) HW boxer 3 MW boxer 4 England
(1749-1788) Career start guessed at but he was a student and leading proponant of the Broughton style and thought to have been active when Broughton fought. Known to be an expert sparrer likely started after Broughton introduced mufflers in '47. Although a mere hadful of recorded fights exist, he was said to have fought more frequently than any man in England. Nom de Guerre "Death" given to him for his pale complexion. Never exceeded 168 in weight and often gave weight when fighting. Appears to have been a fine boxer with very little pop and a more natural Middleweight. Stamina vs. bigger men may have been an issue. Good teacher of boxing. Last mentioned in newspapers 1793. 1776-07-03 W Butcher william Small at Barnet 20 quid 1776-08-? WF Butcher william Small at Barnet 40 guineas attendence 4,000 whether this is a 2nd fight or a different date for the July bout is a question 1777-07-15 Allen, a Clare market Butcher W 15 minutes at Barnet 1788-04 L Elisha Crabbe at Blackheath Source Up To Scratch" by Tony Gee p. 26-28 Bear
