400 Wins

Had to share this - My fictional League that started in 2001 using 1985 for stats/settings. Never thought I'd see a 400 game winner - great longevity. He had his share of injuries, but always minor stuff. His longest stretch on the DL was 7 weeks.

-----

Alejandro Espinoza Whips Expos for #400: What would you do after you had just won your 400th game? Run around Marlins Park doing cartwheels, jumping for joy and waving to the crowd? Well, maybe you and I would do that, but not Alejandro Espinoza -- that's not his way.

After he notched number 400, the 43-year-old Miami hurler spoke to the press like he always has -- in a soft, quiet voice. He wasn't doing any cartwheels or even anything resembling a jump for joy. "Obviously it feels very good," Espinoza commented. "To win this many games, you've got to have a lot of help."

Espinoza got his milestone victory by beating the Montreal Expos 5-2. He held them to 8 hits in 9 innings and rung up 8 strikeouts with 1 walk.

After sharing his thoughts with the press, he went to the clubhouse. There he was greeted by the guys who had helped him get #400. His teammates showered him with champagne and then gave him a rousing round of applause. That got to him -- for the first time today, Espinoza's face broke into a big smile.

Espinoza has crafted a 400-220 won-lost record in his career with a 2.63 ERA.

Pretty awesome, that knuckleball is aging like fine wine... ERA below 2 at the age of 41 and 30+ WAR accumulated in his 40's...wow. Did he go on to pitch any longer?

Season just ended and he's about to become an FA. Ratings are still solid so I expect someone will sign him.

I'll post here when he does and how he does next season.

I'm surprised his control hasn't dropped off, even a bit. Incredible, but who knows, maybe he'll suddenly fall off a cliff ratings wise.

Well, since last season ended, Espinoza signed a 1 yr deal with the Rays. Got off to a decent start, but is out for 3 months with a ruptured finger tendon. As you can see, his ratings started to drop off at the end of last season, and the current injury hasn't helped.

I expect his career is just about over. We'll see how he does after his recovery. I get the feeling he may wind up in the pen or as a #5 after starting the season as the teams #1.

Love seeing this. I mess around with so many settings trying to get players to have careers like this. Did you adjust any settings in your game? Like the aging settings?

Sick of these pitchers that only do 5 or 6 innings.

Didn't adjust anything, just stuck with 1985 stats/settings pretty much.

I too enjoy seeing a player like this come along. They are few and far between.

After earning win #400, Alejandro stuck around for 2 more seasons before finally hanging them up.

1st ballot HOF for sure.

Well, since he just barely managed to squeak in his 400th complete game in the twilight of his career, I suppose he deserves some consideration for the HoF... If you have fairly lax standards...

I did adjust mine as players seemed to die off at age 32 and careers make it to 15 years so I boosted the settings to make them last a bit longer. I have 2 players with 400 wins and both of them broke Nolan ryans strikeout record and one hitter hit 893 HRs (mainly in Colorado) a few challenged various records
