Modern Jays
I did the first year of this over in Historical Leagues in error.
It can be found there. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...blue-jays.html As of the 2012/2013 off season, I am moving it here. Hope you enjoy it. `````````````` The first thing the Toronto Blue Jays management did after a somewhat disappointing season is fire their Scouting Director, Andrew Tinnish. "He didn't fit what we are going for here," said G.M. Rusty Priske They immediately brought in Jason Jackson. He has 31 years of experience and is legendary in International Scouting and Outstanding in Major league scouting (and pretty good right across the board). He is signed to a 3 year contract. (Highly Favors Ability) How this will affect the Blue Jays going forward remains to be seen. The Jays made money last year as Priske was aggressive in shedding unwanted contracts. Alan Horn and Rogers gave them a budget bump and he now has nearly $30m to spend on free agents. Initial reports say that he wants 2 starting pitchers and a 1B or DH. Manager of the Year
(this is funny considering what really happened) Bobby Valentine (BOS) and Don Mattingly (LAD) Also, Toronto makes its first trade of the offseason! Trying to turn a surplus into a strength, the Jays traded disappointing closer Sergio Santos to the Chicago Cubs for SP Jeff Samardzija. Fans were not happy about losing Santos, but GM Rusty Priske said they would be more unhappy if the Jays couldn't get more out of their rotation. |

Cy Young awards
Some stalwarts here as Justin Verlander (DET) and Roy Halladay (PHI) win the awards. Also, Toronto announced they have signed Chad Gaudin to a 1-yr contract with a team option 2nd year averaging about $1m per year. |

Arbitration
We settled with Travis Snider on $1.5m before the hearings. Neftali Feliz - $3.2m (team offer) Brad Ziegler - $2.5m (player request) That is a half mil more than I wanted to pay Ziegler, but that is the deal when you go to arb. |

Big Trade and a Rule 5 addition
To CWS: Jemile Weeks, Eric Arce To TOR: Adam Dunn, Kevan Smith, Jeffrey Soptic, Dan Black and $3m cash Chicago offered this without the added minor leaguers on their part. I goosed it up and then we made it happen. This is the big bat I was looking for at 1st. This did stop me from making that starting pitcher free agent splash, but who I wanted (Greinke) had been extended before I got a shot anyway. I am now being more modest in my goals and trying to sign Gavin Floyd to go with my acquisition of Jeff Samardzija. Weeks had already lost favour with me compared to Josh Satin. RULE 5 I lost nobody and nabbed former 1st overall draft pick, Tim Beckham. He is injured now, and I immediately dropped him onto the 60-day DL. I hope he will turn into my 2B of the future. |

Dec. 28th, 2012
The Toronto Blue Jays didn't get the big prize in free agent pitching, but they did add to their rotation. They signed Gavin Floyd to a 1-year, $9.5 million deal. |

March 15th, 2013: First round of cuts
Sent to AAA Las Vegas: SP 29 yo Alexi Ogando SP 26 yo Michael Kirkman MR 23 yo Kelvin Herrera 1B 26 yo Koby Clemens RF 21 yo Cesar Puello Mostly we have players who aren't ready. Clemens is behind a new backlog... though Dunn is not hitting much better than he is. Ogando is switching back to the bullpen now that we have more starters. Herrera is the big disappointment. I had hoped to turn him into my closer, but his poor performance combined with the surprisingly good results from Alan Farina have sent Kelvin down for more seasoning. Puello is still very young and Kirkman is AAA fodder in case of injury etc. |

March 18th, 2013
Kelvin Herrera's poor performance may have been the first announced disappointment of Spring Training, but it would not be the last. Jose Bautista, coming off a huge season that saw him win the AL MVP has missed most of ST with a sore shoulder. It is reported that he will be back with time for 4 or 5 warm-up games before the season starts, but it is a cause for concern. The latest big adjustment in thinking happened today when John Farrell informed GM Rusty Priske that he and his coaches don't consider Josh Satin able to play second base. Satin came over from the New York Mets late last season in exchange for Ben Francisco. He quickly stole the starting 2B job from Jemile Weeks and while defense was not his strength, he did an adequate job while performing strongly at the plate. His performance was good enough that the Jays were willing to let Weeks go to Chicago as a key member of the Adam Dunn trade. Yet when he showed up to ST this year he had clearly lost a step. He was still swinging the bat well but his ability in the middle infield was questionable until finally Farrell pulled the trigger. As he was the presumptive starter at second, this has led to some shuffling. Farrell is unclear at this point whether it will be Adeiny Hecchevarria, who was earmarked as a super-utility player, or Tim Beckham, former top draft-pick and current rule-5 pick-up from Tampa Bay, who will grab the vacancy. It is also unclear whether Satin will stay on as a back-up to Brett Lawrie and the Dunn/Edwin Encarnacion 1B/DH combo or if he will head down to AAA or be shopped. |

March 22nd, 2013 - 2nd round of cuts (and G.M. Rusty Priske's 45th birthday...)
Sent to AAA 28 yo SP Brandon Morrow 24 yo OF John Tolisano 21 yo OF Rymer Liriano 24 yo OF Moises Sierra We are also waiting on a diagnosis for injured reliever Pedro Campos. I was surprised that Morrow accepted the demotion but I guess he is appraising his play honestly. The others are just OF surplus. They all could have a decent future. |

2013 Blue Jays Opening Day Roster
Rotation Neftali Feliz Roy Oswalt Gavin Floyd Brad Peacock Jeff Samardzija Bullpen Chad Qualls (c) Johan Yan Jesus Martinez Eduardo Sanchez Brad Ziegler Chad Gaudin Alan Farina C - J.P. Arencibia, Wilin Rosario 1B - Adam Dunn, Josh Satin 2B - Tim Beckham 3B - Brett Lawrie SS - Yunel Escobar U - Adeiny Hechavarria LF - Travis Snider CF - Lorenzo Cain RF - Jose Bautista OF - Josh Willingham DH - Edwin Encarnacion Changes from initial plan: Well, Josh Satin, obviously, but Beckham seems to be making the most of his opportunity. I also didn't expect Willingham to lose his starting job to Snider, but they will all get a decent amount of at-bats. Bautista was hurt for much of spring training, but when he wasn't... whoa. He hit .750. That's right .750. That isn't OPS. That is batting average. His OPS was well above 2.000. Small sample size of course, but... whoa. Last edited by rpriske; 10-30-2012 at 01:55 PM. |

67 HR?! Wow.
Josh Satin turned out to be a huge disappointment for me -- I ended up trading him for Bob Kennedy, who's now a 2-time batting title holder, and Satin's in AAA for Texas. |
