Friday the 13th Moneyball Insanity!
From rags to riches. Earlier this week I got fired after 3 years as GM from my rebuild team in a fictional league based on 1976 stat modifiers. So I decided to scrap that league and start over using the US Baseball League quickstart that comes with the game. Added the DH and changed a few minor settings but left most of the rest the same. Took over as the Fresno Fury, a team in the bottom quarter of payroll/budget who finished well under .500 last season.
The owner was patient and his demands were actually reasonable. Then I saw i also inherited an 'Excellent' level manager. And the biggest miracle, I didn't seem to have any truly horrible contracts I couldn't get rid of. Made a sweet trade for a good CF and RP, got rid of some weak links on the team, particularly in the pitching staff and replaced them with slightly more competent players.
Despite my goal simply being to 'not suck completely', we ended up taking the division title. Then came the playoffs (I spectated all the games). Had a relatively easy path to the championship series, only dropping 1 game. Then the fun began.
Had home field advantage, but dropped the first 2 games in the 2-3-2 format. Then came back to win the next 2 on the road. Then dropped game 5 and returned home for two do-or-die games.
Game 6 and down 1 run, I got a walk-off 3-run HR with two-outs in the bottom of the 9th to keep the series alive. Then in Game 7 my bats came alive and we took the final game 7-3.
The challenges my team overcame were huge. I inherited a numbskull of a trainer - should have gotten rid of him in pre-season but I was being a cheapskate. The team was a MASH unit, my pitchers and outfielders seemed to constantly be riddled with injuries, even in the World Series. Lost my one bona-fide ace pitcher for the season right after the all-star break. But still somehow prevailed.
Not bad for my first OOTP playoff series, right? Got the Moneyball and Champions acheivement on Steam. Gonna be difficult to top this one!!!
