Its August 18th, 2015, The Toronto Blue Jays are in the thick of a Pennant Chase, 23 years since there was a Major League Baseball post season game was held North of the Border. But quite aways West of the Big Smoke, there is another franchise that has gone without for sometime, its been 9 years since the Edmonton Oilers last seen a playoff game. It is a bitter memory for many fans, losing in the Stanley Cup Final in 2005-06, there last visit to the NHL Playoffs. Current Scout, then coach Craig MacTavish was behind the bench at the time. After getting by the Red Wings in 6, Shark in 6 and the Ducks in 5... the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Oilers in 7.

Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff and Ryan Smyth were the offensive forces while Chris Pronger and Steve Staios were the stalwards on defense. During the playoffs, a surprise hero in Fernando Pisani emerged, scoring 14 goals in 24 games while goalie Dwayne Roloson held to fort or the net so to speak. Nothing is left of that 05-06 group, but anticipation is high with the recent draft of Connor McDavid and youngsters like Darnell Nurse, Nail Yakupov and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Its time to take advantage of this young crop of talent, and not make it 10 years with out a playoff game in the City of Champions.

LD Nikita Nikitin. The 29 year old Nikitin has played 248 career NHL games and will add some depth and experience to the back end.

LD Darnell Nurse. The 20 year old Nurse was the 7th overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft by the Oilers. Last season he dressed for 2 games. The Oilers expect Nurse to become a top defenseman in the NHL at some point.

LD Griffin Reinhart. The 21 year old Reinhart was the 4th overall pick in the 2012 NHL draft by the New York Islanders. He played 8 games with the Islanders last season. Like Nurse the Oilers expect him to be a defenseman for the future.

LD Andrej Sekera. The 29 year old Sekera was a 3rd round pick by the Sabres in 2004. He is a veteran of 486 NHL games mostly with the Sabres. He has 159 career points, 136 PIMs and is a +1 over that time. He had 23 points in 73 games last year with the Hurricanes and Kings.

LW Taylor Hall. The 23 year old Hall was the 1st overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft by the Oilers. Hall has played in 299 games over 5 seasons with 106 goals and 263 points. The Oilers need Hall to play a full season without injuries for success.

LW Kale Kessy. The 22 year old Kessy was originally drafted by the Coyotes in 2011 111th overall. Kessy has never played a regular season NHL game, at 6 foot 3 he is a physical player that is not afraid to drop the mitts.

Drafted 3rd overall in 2014 by the Oilers he played in 37 games last season scoring 2 and had 9 points. Unfortunately he was a -17 last year in those games and will need to work on his defensive play should he expect to crack the roster.

C Anton Lander. The 24 year old Lander was a 2nd round pick of the Oilers in 2009. Over 4 seasons, he has played just 132 NHL games with 8 goals and 20 points. Described as a two way forward, he should make the roster this season.

C Connor McDavid. The 18 year old McDavid was the prize of the 2015 NHL draft. Picked 1st overall by the Oilers, there is a ton of pressure on this kid to take the Oilers to thier 1st playoff appearance in 9 years. An offensive playmaker on a team with alot of young talent.

I think there's no doubt the Oilers will have a Cup in the next 5 years. Getting McDavid was obviously huge for them but just as important was the change to the Front Office and Coach where they got a big upgrade. We'll see what happens in your franchise! I think getting a solid to great defense in front of the goalies will be enough for them to make the playoffs.

I dont follow the Oilers that closely and thats why I picked them, but they have a ton of young talent...I think you could be right because they should be contenders in a few years... although dont expect me not to screw that up in this dynasty..lol
