Season 10
FINAL Long Live The 80's! Mets Are Cream Of Season 10 Baseball in the 1980's can sometimes be overlooked due to the lack of power or real star profiles. A certain team however from the big city made the decade one to remember and did so again in season 10 as the New York Mets of 1987 took the pennant with 104 wins. The incomparable Doc Gooden won 25 games losing only three and sported two more 19 game winners. The Met arms also included a good pen where Randy Myers saved 39 games and Jesse Orosco played the set up role. On offense Darryl Strawberry hit 49 home runs and Kevin McReynolds drove in 100. New York went 32-8 to finish the season and hold off the Brooklyn Dodgers. It turned out to be a fun summer at Shea as the brash club won and let everyone know about it. The 1951 Dodgers smashed the baseball and lead the year in almost all offensive numbers to finish a respectable second. Roy Campanella had the hearts of Flatbush hitting 50 home runs and driving in 123, and all with a smile. Three other players went over 100 RBI and the club lead the league with 231 home runs taking advantage dimensions at Ebbets Field. No real pen to speak of but the starters did the work as Preacher Roe won 21 games and Ralph Branca lead the team in ERA and innings thrown. The immortal Jackie Robinson hit .331 with 212 hits and 130 runs scored making a real run as the class of the league. Some of the battles with the 1987 Mets were also fun to watch. More 80's magic as the 1985 Cardinals were fancied by many experts and didnt disappoint finishing third although it had to burn to watch the rival Mets take the pennant. As expected the running shoes were on for the Birds stealing 298 bases and Vince Coleman 72. Willie McGee hit .348 and Andy Van Slyke had a great season hitting .312 with 105 RBI; Jack Clark drove in 112. The lefty Ken Dayley was a revelation for Whitey Herzog saving 31 games with a 1.82 ERA. John Tudor won 22 games but finding a fourth starter and some depth in starting pitching was this teams weak spot. Whoever said this type of baseball isnt what the game needs or fun to watch never saw this Cardinal team at their best. A tight battle between losing teams for fourth placed ensued all season long and in the end the 1965 Dodgers finished at .500 and were average enough to prevail. To the Dodgers credit they did finish the season strong going 20-11 in September and holding off the 1908 Cubs. Sandy Koufax lead the league as expected in ERA at 2.44 but did manage to lose 14 games somehow. The Dodgers did allow the fewest runs and Bob Miller finished 33 saves and was vital down the stretch. Also as expected, the Dodgers failed to score runs with Jim Lefebvre leading the side with 86 RBI and no one over 14 home runs. The Dodgers also lead the league in errors which is another amazing statistic for how good their pitching is. Regardless the Dodgers found a way, but the lack of bats is a glaring hole. The Cubs had an even worse time trying to get runs across the plate. The 568 runs tell you all you need to know about their losing record and fail to overtake the Dodgers for fourth. Other then a good April, the Cubs hung around but failed to have another winning month. Jack Pfiester lost 20 games but Orval Overall and Three Finger Brown rounded off a good pitching staff that did everything it could to keep the team competitive. The team hit only .246, something that isnt going to work when your a dead ball era club. The Cubs did steal 196 bases lead by Joe Tinker's 44. A disappointing overall season for Frank Chance and his team that had no one break out at the plate. This 1956 Dodgers team didnt get the hitting it needed to overcome the very poor pitching and the result was 91 losses. Young Sandy Koufax had an ERA of 5.07 and Don Newcombe lost 18 games chilling his confidence. Even Don Drysdale at his young age didnt scare hitters and had a losing record. Duke Snider drilled 48 home runs and hit .312 in what was the type of season you would expect, but Jackie Robinson hit .242 and Roy Campanella a shocking .195 as the boys of summer made it a tough go in Brooklyn. The 1951 team did leaps and bounds better. This Dodger team was 31-50 away from home. The 1953 White Sox melted away in the hot summer winning only 18 games in 2 months and it was their pitching that was to blame. Small Comiskey Park became a batting cage and other than Billy Pierce who had a 3.57 ERA, the results were ugly. Minnie Minoso showed what a good all around player he is hitting 25 home runs and stealing 35 bases from the clean up spot. Jim Rivera had 80 RBI which was a nice surprise while Nellie Fox hit .294 and anchored the infield. In the end this Sox team just didnt seem to believe in itself and failed to make a push at any prolonged point of the season. Hammerin Hank Aaron won the batting title for a last place team hitting .350, only it would seem he could do that. As for the 1959 Braves, they lost 97 games and had the worse range on defense of all teams. Warren Spahn at 38 years old battled as the team ace but lost 18 times. The Milwuakee pen was a nightmare all season and poor Joey Jay lost 21 times. Joe Adcock and Eddie Matthews both went over 100 RBI but the Braves were just never in the race winning only six games in April and losing their confidence from opening day on. Joe Adcock did just about everything for the Milwaukee 1953 Braves -- except win the game. The first baseman had a cycle wasted in his club's loss to the Brooklyn 1950 Dodgers. Despite Adcock going 5-for-5 with 5 runs batted in and 3 runs scored, the Braves were defeated, 10-8. "The guys feel like they let Joe down," Milwaukee 1953 manager Shane Crothers said later. "He did all anyone could ask and we couldn't hold up our end of the bargain." Joe Adcock doubled in the 2nd, hit a two-run triple in the 3rd, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Jim Romano in the 9th. This season Adcock is hitting at a .290 pace with 17 home runs, 58 RBIs and has scored 45 times. |

Season 11
Final Cubs Outshine Dodgers; Reds Survive The 1935 Cubs went fancied and when looking into this season few expectrd them to lift the pennant, however the club lead by manager Charlie Grimm did exactly that winning 106 games. Larry French won 23 games and looked like a seasoned ace while Gabby Hartnett is a true MVP candidate hitting .345 and driving in 115 runs while being the clubhouse leader. The Cubs played incredible baseball over the last two months to overtake the league losing only 4 games in all of August and winning 20 games in September. Wrigley Field was a fun place to be in season 11. The 2017 Dodgers may have gotten too comfortable in the middle of summer and watched the Cubs surge past them for the pennant. But the Dodgers knew their top four objective and won 101 games to make it a good season. Clayton Kershaw was supurb winning 21 games and striking out 282 hitters with a 0.92 ERA. That took the pressure off other good arms like Yu Darvish and Alex Wood who won 23 games in a stellar season. Cody Bellinger hit 45 taters and secured the middle of the order as the club was first in runs Justin Turner hit .315 and even Yasiel Puig fit in well in the 2nd hole with 89 RBI. The Dodgers also had the best defensive metrics in the league and were tops in strikeouts. After the top two, the remaining two spots for advancement were a dog race for the majority of the season. In the end the 2006 Twins found a way to get the better of the fight and finish third by only 2 games. Johan Santana won 22 games and Joe Nathan proved to be the goods as the closer in the tough games. Justin Monreau likely had an MVP season hitting .343 with 44 home runs and 137 RBI. Joe Mauer hit .351 and even Michael Cuddyer drove in 106 runs, The club was relentless in their pursuit and had no intention on being left behind. The 1990 Reds had an up and down year and really scared some people including manager Lou Piniella. The Reds found a way and won 2 out of 3 in Boston on the last week of the season and beat the Dodgers on the final weekend to hang on by one game. The Reds starters struggled for most of the year and the pen was called on to do more work then most. Rob Dibble was fire with 32 saves and a 2.04 ERA as the Nasty Boys were legit. Hal Morris hit .319 and Eric Davis launched 30 home runs including some clutch hitting in September. Pure determination wouldnt let this team lose in October. A losing record in September spoiled the run for this Boston team and even a sweep in desperation against the Milwaukee to end the season was not enough. The Braves of course didnt have the big bats or power with only 52 home runs all season but the likes of Joe Connolly hit ,340 and starter Lefty Tyler was much better then most people thought winning 23 games with a 3.09. The Braves shocked the world when they won it all and even as they came up short, a winning record in a season like this is proof they deserve respect. The team did have a losing record against lefty's that cost them in matchups in the crucial final week. A tough 18 loss August cost the 2003 Athletics dearly even as they played much better down the stretch. Tim Hudson lead a rotation that most knew would be very good but the hitting went silent too often. Hudson threw over 300 innings and struck out 246 batters while Ted Lilly and Barry Zito pitched well but had hard luck; Lilly lost 20 games with a 3.38 ERA. Jose Guillen blasted 44 home runs but the team hit .241 including Eric Chavez hitting .232. It just seems that everytime the Athletics of this era need to step up in the end, they do not have the star power to do so. Hopes were alot higher for the 1950 Dodgers but they finished 40 full games behind the pennant. The worse arms in the league did the Dodgers in and was sunk even more with a very poor defense. Preacher Roe flirted with 30 losses and other then Don Newcombe ERA's for starters were well over six. The offense we lead by its stars as Duke Snider and Roy Campanella combined for 69 home runs and 233 RBI. Snider also stole 49 bases to supplement Jackie Robinson who swiped 34 but had his issues at second base. Still it was the complete lack of arms that bit this Dodger team. Ebbets Field was a batting cage for most teams. We have seen some very extreme records in our 11 seasons and that is mainly because we have some very very good teams. Still the 1953 Braves lost 121 games and were barely able to compete with anyone during this season. The club somehow completely wasted the season of Eddie Mathews who hit 50 home runs and hit .308, but if there was ever a man on an island it was him. Johnny Antonelli won only 8 times and Warren Spahn 9, when Spahn was hurt late in the season things really fell flat. The team was 1-12 in extra inning games and won three games in August. It was a season that was hard to make sense of and will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. At least they had the memory of the Adcock cycle in September. |

It was a fantastic day for Philadelphia 1978 Phillies starter Larry Christenson and a lousy day for the Philadelphia 1964 Phillies. The Philadelphia 1978 hurler's pitching artistry completely befuddled and bewildered the Phillies, as the Phillies cruised to a 1-0 win. When it was all over, Christenson was credited with one of the rarer feats in baseball -- a no-hitter. "The ball was moving and darting, and best of all, going where I wanted it to go," Christenson said later. He rang up 7 strikeouts and allowed 1 walk while shutting Philadelphia 1964 down at Shibe Park. To date this season Christenson has compiled a 9-0 record with a 1.05 ERA in 13 starts. |
