Walkers news: April 28 -- Springfield 2, St. Louis 1
Record: 10-11, 4th, 3 GB Springfield and Quad City
James Paxton pitched seven scoreless innings to help Springfield to a 2-1 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997). The Prairie Fighters got both their runs in the fourth inning off River Walkers ace Aaron Nola. Max Schrock drew a lead-off walk. He stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. A one-out single from Ryan Mountcastle scored Schrock. Mountcastle also stole second and found the plate on a two-out single by Trevor Larnach, which also included an error by right fielder Michael Conforto. Paxton didn't see much trouble in the first six innings, and then got out of a jam in the seventh. Andrew Benintendi led off with a double and moved to third on a Rhys Hoskins fly out. He stayed at third, however, as Paxton struck out Conforto and then after walking Bo Bichette to put runners at the corners he got Nicky Delmonico to fly out keeping it 2-0. St. Louis threatened again in the ninth when it scored its lone run. A lead-off double by Ender Inciarte and one-out walks to Rhys Hoskins and Michael Conforto, all from Gerson Moreno, loaded the bases. Tim Hill then issued the third walk of the inning, this one to Bichette, to make it 2-1. Nicky Delmonico hit a ground ball to third, which resulted in Hoskins being retired at the plate. Hill struck out Tucker Barnhart to end it. The save was the first of the season for Hill. Nola dropped his fourth decision against no wins. He allowed two runs on five hits in six innings. |

Walkers news: April 29 -- Springfield 6, St. Louis 5
Record: 10-12, 4th, 4 GB Springfield
Signed in the off-season to fill the closer's role, Tommy Kahnle has had his struggles in the first month of the season, and that continued in St.Louis' 6-5 loss to Springfield at Busch Stadium (1997). Protecting a 5-4 lead going into the top of the ninth inning, Kahnle allowed the first four batters he faced to reach base to help the Prairie Fighters score a pair of runs to grab the lead. Pinch-hitter Dylan Cozens led off with a double and Max Schrock followed with an RBI single to tie it. J.P. Crawford and Freddie Freeman both drew walks to load the bases, before Kahnle struck out Eric S. Campbell for the first out. But Ryan Mountcastle followed with an infield single, second baseman Bo Bichette fielded the ball but had to eat it, to give Springfield the lead. Rhys Hoskins drove in a run with a triple and Nicky Delmonico had an RBI double, both off Fighters starting pitcher Josh Hader, in the first inning and the Walkers seized a 3-0 lead. It was 4-3, however, by the time St. Louis batted in the bottom of the second. Hader drove in two runs with a double, while Schrock and J.P. Crawford plated one piece, with a single and triple, respectively, off Walkers starter Yu Darvish, as Springfield seized command. St. Louis tied it at 4 in the sixth on a Nicky Delmonico RBI double off Pablo Lopez. The Walkers were up 5-4 after seven when Ender Inciarte reached on an error by Crawford at shortstop and later came around to score on a Mason McCullough wild pitch. Hader went four innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Lopez handed the fifth and sixth innings. After that, McCullough, Anyelo Gomez, and Gerson Moreno all went an inning apiece. Gomez earned his second win of the season. Moreno notched saved No. 6. |

Record: 11-14, 4th, 4.5 GB Quad City
Leading 2-0, Quad City pounded out 12 runs in the top of the second inning to pave the way to an embarrassing 17-3 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997). With the win, Quad City took two of three games in the series. Derek Fisher hit a two-run homer off River Walkers starting pitcher Luiz Gohara in the top of the first inning, giving the Thunder a 2-0 lead. But it was only the beginning. The second inning saw the Thunder pile up 12 runs on just six hits, as St. Louis absolutely killed itself by and by hitting three batters and walking one and also committing a pair of errors. The big hits, a grand slam from Miguel Gomez and a three-run blast from Anthony Alford both off John Curtiss. The effort of Quad City starting pitcher Aaron Blair was lost in all the offense, he didn't allow a run in 6.2 innings giving up just three hits. He struck out four and walked two. All three River Walkers runs came in the bottom of the ninth when Tucker Barnhart hit a three-run home run off Jesse Hahn. |
