Anyway, it ranked only World Series winners, so the '06 Cubs were out. Pound-for-pound, its best team was the '27 Yanks followed by the '61 Yanks, with the '07 Cubs coming in a close third.
27 Yankees i can agree with but how they could beleive 61 Yankees were the 2nd best team i find well laughable. Yeah they were a good team but they were too one dimensional imo to be ranked 2nd. There were a lot of other world series winners that i would say were better.

Woody5254 had a series of Dynasty threads awhile back where he pitted the best teams of all time against each other. You may want to search through those - should get some more good suggestions.

Start here - he also ran a huge "You Pick" tournament.

You should include one really bad team just to see how badly they would do.

Yeah. The Phillies had some amazingly bad teams around 1940. Pick one of them, or the Athletics after one of the times Connie Mack broke them up.

Fixed for accuracy. With their 45th loss this season, they'll become the first franchise to lose 10,000 games.

I was doing some research on the longest losing season streaks, mainly for an article about the Orioles and their 9-year run of futility. Found it interesting that from 1919-1948 the Phils had one winning season. That heady '32 season saw them finish in 4th place, with a 78-76 record. How in heck did the A's pick up and leave while the Phils stuck around?

Bill James Historical Abstract argues the 61 Yanks are way overrated because they relied too much on homers and didn't lead the league in scoring (Detroit) or ERA (Baltimore). I agree, but would be interesting just to see how they do in your league.
I'd vote for the 1954 Indians. OK, they died in the World Series, but that was a great, great rotation. That alone will cause trouble for the rest of the "league." And they broke up the biggest dynasty in BB history, beating the 103-51 Yanks by EIGHT games.

The yanks won 9 pennants and 4 world seriers iover the next 10 years so it was more like the eye of a storm. Cleveland had a great paper team but paper teams do not equate to great teams. Just look at last years NYY team. On paper they were great, but in reality Detroit won and proved to be a better team. Losing 4 of their most important games SHOULD have an impact on our evaluation of them.

I do agree that the 61' Yanks, while flashy, were not among the very best teams ever.

And they achieved this without Lou Gehrig. Imagine if he had stayed healthy.

Good point. I hadn't even considered that. His skills were deteriorating rapidly in '38 and by '39 he was done.

Help getting started

How do I create a league like this? In other words, how do I set up a historical league with a bunch of teams from different years, such as the 20 greatest teams ever or the past 30 World Series champions, etc...?

I think the '91 Twins should be in this for sure.

1927 Yankees
1961 Yankees
1976 Cincinnati
1936 Yankees
1970 Orioles
1998 Yankees
1986 Mets
1955 Dodgers
1984 Tigers
1948 Indians
1990 Oakland
1965 Dodgers
1967 Cardinals
1974 Oakland
1998 Yankees
You have the 1998 Yankees listed twice there.

How about some of those great Braves teams in the 90s? Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, David Justice, Terry Pendleton...

And the most forgotten team of all time, the 1994 Montreal Expos, with Moises Alou, Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, Rondell White, Cliff Floyd, John Wettland, and of course Pedro Martinez...

I've been going by decade when doing historical great teams leagues.

I made this chart , it lists every teams best finish by decade.

My criteria for best team each decade went.....
#1 - World Series Champ (WS)
#2 - World Series Champ (WS) best record if more than 1 in a decade
#3 - AL/NL Champ (AL/NL)
#4 - AL/NL Champ (AL/NL) best record if more than 1 in decade
#5 - Division Champ (DIV)
#6 - Division Champ (DIV) best record if more than 1 in decade
#7 - Wild Card (WC)
#8 - Wild Card (WC) best record if more than 1 in decade
#9 - Best Winning Percentage (Finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th)

I'd like to post it here if anyone is interested in checking it out but it is in Excel format and this site is not letting me upload it. I also have it in word, but it is 124 kbs and this site only allows me to post up to 100 kbs.

If anyone is interested in checking it out and has an idea of how I can get it to you just let me know....
