James Jeffries really needs another title shot. It just seems like him and Johnson are never scheduled in the same month. As soon as they are though, it'll happen.

Moran Defeats Mcgovern Again

January 24, 1905

Owen Moran (14-1-1) defended his title against the man he took it from with a convincing 2nd round TKO. Terry McGovern (17-4) went down early in the 2nd, barely beat the count and then got pummeled on the ropes until the referee stepped in and stopped it.

It was Moran's 2nd defense of the Bantamweight crown.

On the undercard

LW - Jack Blackburn UD10 Patsy Sweeney
HW - Larry Foley UD10 Leo Houck (Houck stepping up to HW for this loss)
HW - Bob Armstrong TKO9 Ed Dunkhorst
FW - Clarence Forbes UD10 Kid Herman Landfield
LHW - Patsy Cardiff SD10 Al Kauffmann

Gans Retains Title With 8th Title Defense

February 6, 1905

Joe Gans (17-1-1) won by a 7th round TKO over #1 Billy Meyer (15-2-2). Gans shut alot of critics up by destroying one of the two fighters he is accused of ducking.

Gans cut Meyer over the left eye in the 3rd round and Meyer's eye began to swell shut. By the 7th his eye was nearly closed as Gans won every round from the 3rd on. After a 15 punch barrage, Meyer was helpless on the rupes as the ref stepped in and stopped it.

On the undercard

LW - Harry Gilmore TKO5 Kid Herman Landfield (Landfield broke his left hand in the 5th)
HW - Bill Doherty KO3 Tom Lees
HW - Jack Burns SD6 Con Coughlin (Burns fought as a beginner in this club fight)
HW - John McDermont UD6 Syd Hughes (club fight)
MW - Edward Rollins UD10 Frank Glover (Rollins evened his record and moves back up to the main class. He won 5 straight in club for only a 15 month trip to the club ranks)

Late Rally Falls Short

February 18, 1905

Abe Attell (18-4-1) built a solid lead then held on to win a UD15 over #4 Jem Driscoll (17-5). This was Attell's 2nd defense since regaining the title 7 months ago.

Driscoll started fast winning the first two rounds solidly. Attell dropped Driscoll early in the 3rd round and changed the momentum of the fight. Attell dominated the next 8 rounds losing only the 6th. Driscoll came storming back at the end of the fight winning 3 of the last 4 rounds but it wasn't enough to sway the judges.

Other than the KD in the 3rd, there were no other KD's, cuts or swellings. I had the fight 144-141. The same with all 3 official judges. Mark Moe ringside had it 145-141.

On the undercard

HW - Bob Armstrong UD10 Joe Coburn
LHW - Mike Donovan UD10 Patsy Cardiff (Donovan stepping up in weight for the win)
LHW - Jack Williams SD6 Fred Robinson (Williams stepping up in weight for this club win)
FW - Kid Broad MD6 Joe Bernstein (Broad was a beginner in this club fight)
FW - Solly Smith UD10 Torpedo Billy Murphy (Smith moves back up to the main group with this win)

Herrera Rebounds With A 3rd Round Tko

February 22, 1905

Aurelio Herrera (4-1) bounced back from a loss to Jem Driscoll with a 3rd round TKO over Billy Funacane (2-3).

Herrera nearly knocked out Funacane in the first. He never put him down but Funacane staggered back to his corner after being outpointed 29-0. Funacane's right eye was badly damaged in the round and eventually the ring doctor stopped it in the 3rd.

I like the way you're doing this, it's some good reading. Keep up the good work! Bytheway, I'm even more interested in this now since I picked up the Boxing Register book, which contains biographies and the records of all boxing hall of fame inductees.

I'm in the UK so I got it from amazon.co.uk. On the actual amazon site it was listed as about £23.00, but I got it for just £8.00 from an 'amazon seller'. People go on there and list their items as well, so there are quite a few book companies who list their books on amazon marketplace, it's a really good way of getting sales.

Anyway this company was called 'Elephant Books USA' or something like that. It was shipped from the USA I think, so if I give you the website for Elephant Books, if you are in America you can get it from them. www.elephantbooks.com

Just search for 'Boxing Register'. It should come up with two editions of the book. I think that there are 3 editions of the boxing register overall, but I have the most updated one and that is 2002. It's a brilliant book, it has everything really. All of the hall of fame boxers are in there. It starts with bare knuckle fighters, then moves on to like the 1800's and eventually moves on to 'modern era' with all the greats like Ali, Leonard, Liston, etc. Most boxers have their full records but some have a number of 'selected' bouts listed instead. There's also a lot of pages near the back about legendary promoters, referees, managers, journalists, etc.

Johnson Defends Title ... Barely

March 7, 1905

Jack Johnson (18-1) won a SD15 over #5 James Corbett (16-5-2) in a very boring fight. Corbett suffered a bloody nose in the 4th, other than that there was no action at all. Corbett landed 43.9% of his punches, Johnson 43.1%.

I had the fight 144-142. Tom Trunzo ringside had it 142-143. The judges had it 142-143/145-140/144-143.

On the undercard

LHW - Jack Sullivan TKO7 John Flood
LHW - Joe Choynski TKO1 Fred Cooley
WW - Al Neill UD10 Jack Bennett
LW - Ed Connolly UD6 Young Joseph (both fighters are beginners)
BW - Chappie Moran KO8 Danny Dougherty

Fitzsimmons Debut At Lhw Unsuccessful

March 15, 1905

Bob Fitzsimmons (17-1) attempted to step up in weight and took on the #1 LHW Jack O' Brien (12-0-1) which would set up a championship bout for Fitz.

Instead O' Brien sent him crawling back to the middleweights with a 4th round TKO. Fitzsimmons was down twice and cut whent he ref stopped it with less than a minute to go.

Fitz after the fight said "I still have the MW belt and I will try the LHW division again at some point."
