"Delete players who never reached majors" question
So I have a fictional offline league in its 8th year. I want to enable the "Delete those who never reached majors" option to cut down on the save game file size in the future. If I do this, will I need to purge the database as well, or will my league be ok without me doing that? I'd rather not go through that if I can possibly avoid it...

By enabling the deletion of those players will help but ultimately you will want to purge the your database to get the effect you want. By purging the database, this should speed up the processing of your game, where by just deleting players does not serve to do the same thing.

Is there any special precaution I need to take with the purging beyond backing up my league beforehand? The manual details a long process for using the purge tool but it's written for online leagues. And is it something I should do after every season?

You are definitely correct about backing up your league before purging. I would not purge after every season, that is a bit of overkill and purging has some risk. I would say after every 8-10 seasons with a normal setup. If you have a very large world maybe every 5-6 seasons. You should have a good sense of how your computer and OOTP cooperate. Delete players as needed each season and purge as you notice a perceptible slowdown.
Good Luck!
