Tony Olivas

Tony Olivas - Lightweight

Professional record: W16(5) / L19(12) / D3

_______________________________________

I don't usually post individual files, but after coming across "Little" Tony Olivas' unique little story compelled me to.

Olivas was a very popular newsboy (12-years-old) boxer for matchmaker Jimmy Erwin at the Pan-American Arena, Juarez.

Newsboy bouts;

1943-03-05: Sebastian Gonzalez vs. Amado Rodriguez undercard
1943-03-19: Midget Mexico vs. Baby Zavala undercard - opponent Wee Willie Torras, declared a draw.
1943-04-16: Amado Rodriguez vs. Roberto Ramirez undercard - opponent Walker Lindsey, awarded decision.

_______________________________________

Then in April 1943;

Little Tony Olivas, 12. popular Juarez juvenile boxer who has a large following not only among the boys of the Mexican city but adults as well, lies in Liberty Hospital; with a knife wound in the back.

He was stabbed, according to reports. when he resented an insult to his sister. His assailant was said to be an adult, who appears to have escaped arrest,

Matchmaker Jimmy Erwin, who has signed Olivas for several special newsboy bouts in the Pan-America arena, visited Olivas in the hospital Sunday and reports the lad is not seriously injured and will be out again in a few days.

Attesting his popularity among the kids of Juarez, twenty or more young boys were sitting around Olivas’ bed in the hospital when Erwin arrived.

_______________________________________

It seems Olivas was out of action for more than just a few days, as the only other bout I can find at present is;

1943-12-22: Roberto Ramirez vs. Leonard Nix undercard - opponent Baby Riveria

_______________________________________

Olivas turned pro at age 15 in 1946, at the same venue with the same matchmaker.

Accounts of his style read that he was a crowd-pleasing puncher, a whirlwind type boxer who never failed to give a good account of himself.
