Hi,

I was wondering if somebody knows who this Expos player is. His ID is EC726. I looked and searched but I couldn't find anything. The listing says Dennis Blair but it sure don't look like him and his was with the Padres when the Expos donned this uniform.

Thanks,

BRobby05

Mystery Expo

It's Scott Sanderson - actually, it's the very image Topps used on his 1982 card.

The next time the Astros do a "Throwback Night," they need to use the old Colt unis.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for answering my question. I'm still sorting through my old vault pics. I even have that set, but I really didn't follow the Expos much.

Thanks again...and EVERYBODY have a GREAT Thanksgiving!!!

Not all of these guys technically belong here as most never actually played in the majors but the collection is just too good to be split up. And no, none of them actually played in Houston......
Thanks Merkle for these really rare & great pics of the Colt .45s. Truly appreciated!

Yes! It was the photo on his '81 Topps card. That "checklist" is more like a "possibilities" list!

Grob was a '56 Senator depicted in camp with Houston in '63.
GREAT PHOTOS of some obscure Colt 45's. Awesome finds

The pitcher (with surname Evans) who was a non-roster invitee with the White Sox in 1980 is listed in Baseball-reference.com as Ricky Lee Evans. However, I found at least one newspaper transactions article which cited him under the name Randy Evans as having been with the major league Chicago White Sox in their 1980 spring training camp prior to being farmed out to the minor leagues.

The Baseball-reference cite is at:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=evans-005ric

Correction:

The White Sox had two pitchers named Evans in their system in 1980. I was wrong about the above being the cite for Randy Evans. Baseball-reference has a record for Randall Evans at https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=evans-001ran

I can add a couple of info items about Randy Evans which are not in his baseball-reference record. His exact date of birth is 9/14/1957 and his hometown was Phoenix, Arizona, when he was a player.

Don Newcombe 1960

Happy Thanksgiving (belatedly)!

This is one of the great white whales of baseball photography. Though Newcombe went to his last big league stop, Cleveland, on July 29, 1960 and appeared in 24 of the team's last 63 games the only thing anybody had ever seen of him in this uniform was this slightly blurry shot, cropped to just the face and cap.

This is a photo dated August 1, 1960 from the files of my first employer, the late-lamented wire service United Press International and was either taken at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, or old Griffith Stadium in Washington. Enjoy.

Obviously that should be "Don Newcombe 1947" or "Don Newcombe IN 1960"

Corky actually got a mention in Ball Four. I can't print the actual quote of what somebody sent to him, since this is a family website.

Hoping his pics eventually emerge from the Vault....

There’s a “Sporting News Collection” hologram sticker on the back, an ink-stamped “1963” in red (if there was supposed to be a month preceding the year, it didn’t register), and as you can see from the quick snapshot of the actual 8 x 10, the thing has been printed identifying Ferrand with the Colts.

Could be from later in calendar 1963, could be from a tryout, could be...who knows what?
Oof. Given that the uni looks so good, I'd be inclined to say that this is a legit cap and that's a shadow/sweat line. It appears to be one of the early .45s hats where the ".45s" is actually on a separate patch of fabric that was sewn on.

Here's an example of the patch (from thompsonian.info).

Thanks for all these great photos Merkle! Definitely a nice add to the collection over here.

Two Notes:

Lumpkin - PLEASE - the minor leaguers go in the minor league thread. The premise of posting the Topps eBay images here is to add to the collection of available imagery of major league players, and Topps' nightly posting of 15-30 negatives every night between 10 and 11 PM EST is pretty well known, and accessible to everybody who can see this site.

Re: Corky Evans. That is the Topps Vault image of him. I helped them find it, and I wrote the back of the card.
